Jamshad Cethirakath (aka Jammy born 11 December 1980), known by his stage name Arya is an Indian film actor, who mainly appears in Tamil films. He made his breakthrough in Vishnuvardhan's Arinthum Ariyamalum and quickly followed with a string of successes like Pattiyal, Oram Po, Naan Kadavul, Madrasapattinam, Boss Engira Baskaran, Avan Ivan, Vettai and Raja Rani.[1][2][3]

Early life

Arya was born to Umer and Jamila[4] on 11 December 1980 in Trikaripur, Kerala, India. His father is a prominent restaurateur (Sea Shell fine dining chain) and football champion. He did his schooling in SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School, Chennai and then graduated with an engineering degree from Crescent Engineering College in Vandalur, Chennai in Computer Science Engineering.

Film career

2005 to 2009

While working as an assistant software engineer, Arya was approached by late cinematographer Jeeva to audition for his Ullam Ketkumae in 2003. The pair had lived in the same neighbourhood and had attended the same local mosque. Arya immediately signed up for the project and was given the stage name.[5] But the film was delayed and only released after[6] Vishnuvardhan's Arinthum Ariyamalum, which went on to become a super hit[7] and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for 2005.[8][9] In a candid interview several years later, Arya disclosed that the soundtrack Thee Pidika generated mass attention on him though his screen time was 45 minutes only.[10] His next release, the delayed Ullam Ketkumae, portraying Arya as a college cricketer, also carried good reviews and was a successful venture at the box office.[11] His third release was the campus romance, Oru Kalluriyin Kathai, which surprised the trade opening at No.1 in the box office[12] and emerging successful.[13]

Arya's next film was Igore's thriller Kalabha Kadhalan where he played an engineer pursued romantically by an ogling sister-in-law. The film won critical acclaim.[14] He collaborated with Vishnuvardhan again in the successful gangster film Pattiyal.[15] He subsequently appeared in the action film Vattaram as Burma.[16]

In 2007, Arya played a guest appearance in Cheran's Maya Kannadi as himself before his long-delayed Oram Po, previously known as Auto. Prior to release the film gained cult status for its innovative trailer, with Arya playing a Chennai-based auto driver who competes in races at nights. The film directed by duo Pushkar-Gayathri opened to positive reviews and was successful at the box office.[17][18]

Arya's next release was two years later with Bala's long delayed off-beat melodrama on cannibals, Naan Kadavul. The film was initially launched with Ajith in early 2005, but after he dropped out Arya signed up in mid-2006.[19] The film took two years to complete with Arya growing a full length beard for the production thus making him unable to sign other projects.[20] The film opened in 235 screens worldwide[21], the widest release for both Bala and Arya then. The film won critical acclaim and emerged successful.[22] Arya won the Kalaimamani Award from Tamil Nadu government[23] and also garnered two nominations from notable award committees.[24] After a guest appearance in Rajesh's Siva Manasula Sakthi, he then collaborated with Vishnuvardhan for the third time in his romantic-thriller, Sarvam, an anthology film playing the role of a lovesick architect. Arya was ranked No.12 bankable star of Tamil cinema by the end of 2009.[25]

2010–present

2010 became a career-defining year for Arya, with the widespread success of his films catapulting him into the top ten ranks of actors of Tamil cinema.[26][27] His first release was his debut in Telugu cinema, where he played the antagonist in Varudu. His performance won critical acclaim.[28] His next venture was the period film Madrasapattinam depicting inter-racial romance in the early 1940s, co-starring British Miss Teen World Amy Jackson. Arya portrayed the role of Ilamparithi, a dhobi who falls in love with the daughter of a British Governor. The film won critical acclaim, both in India and the UK[29], and emerged successful at the box office.[30] He then appeared in the romantic comedy Boss Engira Baskaran, which Arya's production house, The Show People, also co-produced. The film portrayed Arya as a job seeker. His comic timing alongside Santhanam and on-screen chemistry with Nayantara won critical acclaim.[31] The film emerged as Arya's first blockbuster.[32][33] His final release of the year was in a dual role in the romantic travelogue Chikku Bukku shot extensively in London and Karaikudi.[34]

Arya's first release in 2011 was an extended cameo in Malayalam period fantasy Urumi, where he played dual roles. The film won critical acclaim.[35] In March, he was signed by director Mani Ratnam to essay the role of Arulmozhi Varman in his epic film Ponniyin Selvan, based on the novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy.[36] But the project did not materialize.[37] Arya was then cast in Bala's off-beat melodrama Avan Ivan, where he portrayed the lead role of an illiterate lock picker. The film won critical acclaim and emerged successful.[38][39]

Arya next appeared in Vettai as a gallant brother of a timid cop. The film won critical acclaim and emerged successful.[40][41] Arya later appeared in the promotional soundtrack for Kazhugu and played a guest appearance in Oru Kal Oru Kannadi.

In 2013, Arya was cast in the slapstick film Settai, a remake of the Hindi hit Delhi Belly. The film opened to mixed reviews but emerged as "above average" success.[42] Later his romantic comedy Raja Rani emerged as the biggest blockbuster of his career grossing over 500 million (US$6.0 million) in 25 days worldwide.[43][44][45][46] Arya was later cast in supporting role in Arrambam. His last release of the year was Selvaraghavan's high-budget planetary romance Irandam Ulagam which saw the widest release of his career in 1,200 screens worldwide. Arya worked out to build a huge frame and six-pack abs to fit the muscular lead role.[47]

In August 2013, a new project titled Purampokku was announced to be directed by S. P. Jananathan for UTV Motion Pictures casting Vijay Sethupathy in guest appearance.[48] In October 2013, a new caper film project titled Meekaamann was announced, to be directed by Magizh Thirumeni and music composed by Thaman, for Nemichand Jhabak.[49] In November 2013, a new untitled romantic comedy project was announced to be directed by Rajesh for his home production house The Show People casting Tamanna Bhatia.[50] Another untitled project to be directed by Vishnuvardhan was also announced the same month casting Kreshna in supporting role. Arya also has three forthcoming films which will see him in guest appearances, Madha Gaja Raja, Parimala Thiraiyarangam and Kadhal 2 Kalyanam.

Brand endorsement

Arya is the ambassador of television and print marketing campaigns of Otto, the flagship brand of Pothys Clothing.[51]
