Jonita Gandhi (born 23 October 1989) is an Indo-Canadian singer. She sings in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, Punjabi, Kannada and Malayalam.[1][2][3]

Personal life

Jonita Gandhi was born in New Delhi, India. She moved to Canada with her family when she was a few months old. She grew up in Toronto and Brampton.[4] Her father, a musician by hobby and an electronics engineer by profession, recognized her potential and encouraged her to sing. Gandhi first performed in 1995 at a gig at her father's show in Toronto on a Christmas event and the years to follow became prosperous for her. She completed her degrees in health science and business. She also received an internship at CIBC World Markets during her undergrad but the first passion for Gandhi was always singing, so music continued to run in background throughout her education. Gandhi has formal training in Western classical music and during her stay in India has taken up training in Hindustani classical singing.[1][5][6]

Career

Jonita Gandhi started posting videos in collaboration with Aakash Gandhi when she was 17 and they went viral on internet. She has big hits on YouTube for covers of songs Someone Like You, Pani Da Rang, Tujhko Jo Paaya, Tum Hi Ho, Suhaani Raat, Yeh Honsla, and many others.[5] She has also performed in BC, Canada for songs like Aao Huzoor Tumko, Lag Ja Gale which are very famous.

She has participated at concerts with Sonu Nigam which were located in various countries including Russia, UK, US and the Caribbean. After that, she decided to try her fortune in India. She started her career in the Bollywood music industry. Gandhi stepped into the world of playback singing with Vishal–Shekhar in Chennai Express starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.[7] She continued her work in Bollywood with the movie Highway starring Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt, singing the tracks Kahaan Hoon Main and Implosive Silence.

Gandhi's work as a playback singer is not limited to film soundtracks as she has been featured in AR Rahman's album Raunaq as well.[2] Her association with Rahman continued with a backing vocal performance for the Mani Ratnam's Tamil film OK Kanmani. On July 26, 2016, she performed at the 2016 Jubilee Games in Dubai with Salim-Sulaiman as well as other well known Ismaili Muslim artists as part of a Global Concert. In 2017, she performed with Amit Trivedi on MTV Unplugged (India) Season 6. Her song "The Breakup Song" from the movie "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" topped the charts and also brought her many award nominations and wider recognition. In 2018, she appeared on Lockdown, a music reality web series on ZEE5, where she collaborated with Badshah. Appearing the first episode of the series, Jonita and Badshah recreated two songs ‘Tip Tip Barsa Pani’ from Mohra and the folk song Kala Joda in 24 hours.
