Early life

Lisa Manoban was born Pranpriya Manoban on March 27, 1997, in Bangkok, Thailand. Her name was later changed to Lalisa, meaning ‘the one who is praised’, on the advice of a fortune teller in order to bring in prosperity. She also picked up the nicknames Lalice, Lili, and Pokpak. Lisa was also named Thailand’s Princess. She is an only child, her mother is Thai and her stepfather is a renowned Swiss Chef in Thailand. Lisa came from a well-off family as her parents own a culinary school.[5]

She attended Praphamontree II School in Thailand. Lisa started dancing when she was 8 years old and began her vocal training in her middle school. Her genre is Pop and RnB. At a young age, she participated in a Thai dance troupe Wee Za Cool alongside with her childhood friend Got 7’s Bambam.[6]

YG Audition

2010: YG Entertainment Audition in Thailand

In 2010 audition of YG Entertainment held in Bangkok, Lisa was the only one chosen to become a trainee out of 4,000 dreamers. The multitalented Lisa signed her contract in 2011 to become an official trainee and relocate to South Korea at the age of 14. Because of her tender age, at first, Lisa’s parents don’t approve of her moving and living alone in South Korea but later supported her decision as she explains it very well that it’s her dream to become an idol. Lisa is the first non-Korean YG Entertainment artist. [7]

Pre-debut

2011-2016: Idol training and Modeling

Multilingual Lisa trained for more than five years before she formally joined Blackpink. She studied singing, dancing, and rapping, and took monthly test designed to identify their strengths; “Lisa would always get A’s for everything,” said Jennie her bandmate, in their recent interview with Billboard.[8]

Her modeling career began in 2014 when she models for YG clothing brand Nonagon, the latter has been modelled by other YG artist such as CL of 2NE1 and Taeyang of Bigbang. [9] Her model-like body and badass facial expression fit quite really well with the theme of the clothing brand. Lisa and her male counterpart Bobby are the official face of Nonagon. [10] [11]

Blackpink

2016-2018: Debut and global stardom

Her international popularity began when she debuted as one of four members of Blackpink in August 2016. [12] She established herself as the main dancer, lead rapper, and vocalist of the group. [13] Her girl group topped Billboard World Digital Song chart with their hit single ‘Boombayah’, which set the record as the most-viewed debut music video by a Korean act. [14]

In 2018, they release a comeback single ‘Ddu-du Ddu-du’ making their first Billboard Hot 100 entry peaking at number 55. Their album Square Up also peaked at number 40 in the Billboard 200. Lisa’s notable rap in ‘Playing With Fire’, ‘As If It Is Your Last’, and the all-time most-viewed Kpop music video ‘Ddu-ddu Ddu-du’ showcase her powerful voice and charismatic moves in their live performances.[15]

In the same year, Lisa became the muse of Celine, a French ready-to-wear and leather luxury brand. [16] The Parisian luxury fashion house has gifted Lisa a black leather carryall with a hanging luggage tagged emblazoned with her initials “L.M.”, she was the third celebrity to be given the same luxury bag after high-profile celebrities: Lady Gaga and Angelina Jolie. [17]

Back in September, Lisa proved her global influence when she attended Michael Kors Spring 2019 Fashion Show at the New York Fashion Week. [18] She sat in front row seat alongside with Princess Mafalda Cecilia of Bulgaria.[19] [20] Lisa trended in 25 countries via ‘LisaxMichaelKors’ on twitter when she appeared in the runway show held at Pier 17.[21] [22]

[32] She became widely popular by her dancing skills and her ability to attract non-Kpop fans all over Asia to United States and Europe. A first in history for a female idol to do so. Her fans all over the world posted photos and endearing messages via ‘AceLalisaDay’ on twitter.[39]
