The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is a front-engine, front or four wheel drive five-door luxury compact crossover unveiled by the German manufacturer Daimler AG on 10 June 2019 in Park City, Utah.[2][3] It was previously unveiled to the public at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2019 as a concept car.[4] It is positioned between GLA-Class and GLC-Class in size. Unlike the GLA-Class and the GLC-Class, it has optional third row seats. The launch date for taking orders begins in July 2019.[5] The production is slated to commence at the end of 2019 for 2020 model year.
The GLB-Class is powered by a range of petrol and diesel 4-cylinder engines, and comes in either front-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive.
The GLB concept is positioned as a more rugged alternative to the GLA-Class or GLC-Class, equipped with off-road tires and a roof box. It uses the same platform as the W177 A-Class and the GLA-Class, and also shares its engine with the A-Class, a 2.0L M260 turbocharged Inline 4. Mechanically, it has standard all-wheel drive and an 8-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Despite being similarly sized to the GLC, the GLB has three-row seating due to better space distribution.
Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4MATIC was announced on 28 August 2019 in time for 2019 IAA Frankfurt Auto Salon. GLB 35 4MATIC is first of 35-series to have eight-speed automatic gearbox while other 35-series models (A 35 4MATIC and CLA 35 4MATIC) continue with seven-speed automatic gearboxes.[6] Fitted to GLB 35 4MATIC, the AMC-specific vertical grill is used on the 35-series model for the first time.[7]
Technical Details
The GLB-Class shares its proportions with the B-Class, while the dynamics will be based on the GLA-Class. It will have 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and sporty derivatives GLB 35. A plug-in hybrid and an electric version, presumably called the EQB, will be available later.
Engines
At launch, GLB-Class will have three petrol and two diesel engines: all of them is fitted with automatic transmissions only. Two petrol and two diesel engines are paired with standard 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The 2.0 L petrol engine in the GLB 35 is tuned to produce 225 kW (306 metric hp) and 400 Nm of torque.[8] A plug-in hybrid system found in A 250 e could be fitted to GLB at later date.
