When it comes to theater, it is a mixed bag for trans people. Trans performers have been struggling to break into the musical theater genre despite the fact that theater has "been such a crucial place for the exploration of gender fluidity,"[1] and continuing questions over whether cisgender people should play trans characters or not.[2] Webcomics are different. According to a study by Erik Melander in 2005, at least 25% of webcomic creators were female. This percentage was significantly larger than the number of successful women creating print comics at the time, and the number may have been even higher, as a certain percentage of contributors were unknown.[3] In 2015, 63% of the top 30 comic creators on webcomic conglomerate Tapastic were female.[4] In 2016, 42% of the webcomic creators on WEBTOON were female, as was 50% of its 6 million active daily readers.[5][6] Girls with Slingshots creator Danielle Corsetto stated that webcomics are probably a female-dominated field because there is no need to go through an established publisher. Noelle Stevenson, creator of Nimona and Lumberjanes, noticed that webcomics predominantly feature female protagonists, possibly to "balance out" the content of mainstream media. Corsetto noted that she has never encountered sexism during her career, though Stevenson described some negative experiences with Reddit and 4Chan, websites outside of her usual channels.[7]

However, there exist a large amount of openly gay and lesbian comic creators that self-publish their work on the internet. These include amateur works, as well as more "mainstream" works, such as Kyle's Bed & Breakfast.[8] According to Andrew Wheeler from Comics Alliance, webcomics "provide a platform to so many queer voices that might otherwise go undiscovered,"[9] and Tash Wolfe of The Mary Sue has a similar outlook on transgender artists and themes.[10]

Bisexuality is a sexual orientation that refers to the romantic and/or sexual attraction towards people of more than one gender (historically towards men and women). Throughout history numerous bisexual characters have appeared in television series, including cartoons, anime and web series. Bisexual characters have been featured in animation and anime for years. Despite this representation, "not all queer presentation" is created equal as one scholar noted, with representation of bisexual and transgender characters lagging behind lesbians and gay men in some respects,[1] with this representation important in the U.S. political climate while GLAAD called for Hollywood to produce more characters with LGBTQ characters.[2][3]

Bisexuality is a sexual orientation that refers to the romantic and/or sexual attraction towards people of more than one gender (historically towards men and women). Throughout history, numerous bisexual characters have appeared in television series, including cartoons, anime, and web series.

Having been created as a radio program in 1937 and transitioning to television in 1952, Guiding Light is the oldest television series in the world to feature bisexual characters; Olivia Spencer and Natalia Rivera Aitoro. Olivia was introduced in 1999 and Natalia in 2007, with the two women realizing they are bisexual and beginning a relationship in 2008..[4] In 1990, L.A. Law became the first primetime television series to introduce a recurring bisexual character; C.J. Lamb.[5][6] In 2015, during The 100's second season, the protagonist Clarke Griffin kissed Lexa, making the series the first in America belonging to one of the "Big Five" networks with a bisexual lead.[7]

Bisexual characters have been featured in animation and anime for years. For instance, a 1980s series, Urusei Yatsura featured Ryūnosuke Fujinami, a tomboyish girl and protagonist who she goes out on a date with an alien girl Ran, who thinks Ryūnosuke is a lesbian after she says she has no interest in boys,[8] is blackmailed into going on a date with Shinobu,[9] and becomes good friends with Benten, who acknowledges her femininity without making a joke.[10] In the OVA, Nagisa Shiowatari becomes her fiancé, a guy who was raised as a girl, meaning he behaves and crossdresses as a girl, implying she may be bisexual.[11] A few months after Sailor Moon ended, another fan favorite, named Revolutionary Girl Utena, began on April 2. The show contained many LGBTQ characters since Ikuhara tried to express queer and feminist themes in the series, leading some to call the series "groundbreaking."[12][13] Some characters are lesbian, like Juri Arisugawa, and others are bisexual, like Utena Tenjou, a crossdressing prince and her friend (and love) "Rose Bride" Anthy Himemiya.[14] As lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender characters appeared in anime throughout the later 1990s, like Nuriko in Fushigi Yûgi who initially dresses and acts as a woman named Kang-lin,[15] and is in love with Hotohori, but later also grows to love the main heroine Miaka,[16] a few shows on U.S. broadcast networks featured LGBTQ characters like South Park, specifically manifested in the characters Liane Cartman[17] and Stephen Stotch,[18][19] and Family Guy as shown by Meg Griffin[20][21][22][23][24] and Stewie Griffin[25][26][27][28] The show's abrupt cancellation caused MacFarlane to abort these plans, and the episode "Queer Is Stewie?" was produced, but never shown.[29][30]

In later years, Drawn Together featured Foxxy Love, a bisexual character,[31] while The Fairly OddParents featured a bisexual character (Sanjay) in the later 2000s.[32] An openly bisexual woman (Kaikaina "Sister" Grif) appeared in episodes of Red vs. Blue, becoming the main character by the show's fifth season in 2006.[33] Another well-regarded show, Queer Duck, the first U.S. animated TV series to have homosexuality as a major theme,[34] was received positively by some in the LGBTQ community since it had lesbian, gay, and bisexual characters. In early 2011, Wandering Son, known as Hōrō Musuko in Japan, would premiere on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block, an anime which would be praised as a "breakout show in the transgender drama genre" for its delicate art, empathetic story, and focus on characters,[35] included a bisexual woman (Anne Suehiro) and a trans woman (Hiroyuki Yoshida). In the 2010s, Love Stage!! also premiered with two bisexual characters: Izumi Sena and Ryoma Ichijo.[36] Western animation made strides as well, with Adventure Time beginning in 2010, with Rebecca Sugar working to foster the relationship of two bisexual characters (Marceline "Marcy" the Vampire Queen and Princess Bonnibel "Bonnie" Bubblegum) through her work on the show,[37] Adventure Time would set the stage for other groundbreaking shows in the future. In the years that followed, several shows would introduce bisexual characters: Good Vibes (Voneeta Teets[38]), Bravest Warriors (Plum[39]), The Crumpets (Grownboy & Steve[40]) and The Boondocks (Walter Sweetlove[41]). In the 2010s, there would be several other shows with bisexual characters. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans featured Norba Shino, a slightly flamboyant, and bisexual, eccentric person who reciprocates another boy's romantic affections,[42] while Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online, which would have two bisexual characters: Pitohui[43] and Clarence.[44] In 2015, Star vs. the Forces of Evil introduced Jackie Lynn Thomas, who becomes a bisexual character as shown in later episodes, while Castlevania introduced two bisexual characters (Carmilla and Alucard),[45][46] while the Chinese show, Spiritpact which introduced two LGBTQ characters: Yang Jinghua (bisexual) and Duanmu Xi (gay).[47] Additionally, a Chinese show, Mo Dao Zu Shi included two LGBTQ characters: Wei Wuxian (bisexual) and Lan Wanji (gay),[48] Big Mouth included two bisexual characters (Shannon Glaser[49] and Jay Bilzerian[50]) Hazbin Hotel introduced a bisexual character named Charlie,[51][52] and Helluva Boss introduced Stolas, a bisexual character.[53]

Despite this representation, "not all queer presentation" is created equal as one scholar noted, with the representation of bisexual and transgender characters lagging behind lesbians and gay men in some respects,[1] with this representation important in the U.S. political climate while GLAAD called for Hollywood to produce more characters with LGBTQ characters.[54][55]
