Images

I am sorry you had all this trouble with images. In Wikipedia, m:Comyright paranoia is pervasive and some users enjoy harassing others about images since the pretense of doing so to protect the Foundation gives them a perception of impunity while in many cases it would take less than a minute to simply retag the image uploaded by an inexperienced uses with the tag. Anyway, I will watch your talk page and when I see you being warned about some image I will take a look to see whether it can be saved from deletion. But even if you are unsure about copyright, please always provide the image source. It will make preserving it a whole lot easier. Happy edits, --Irpen 06:13, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Regarding images

Hi Bogdan. Regarding this your talk message: you can use the image request templates for filing standard images requests that will be automatically put to the respective category. I'd even ask you to do so. I requested that category to be populated: we need thousands of images on UA-related pages, so potential photographers (mappers etc.) need a consistent to-do list.

Lukashenko

I think what happened at [1] is that someone tried to introduce a photo of Lukashenko without uploading it to Wikipedia (which isn't technically possible). Hello,

Can I ask why you changed the spelling from Kyiv to Kiev? The old style is being phased out everywhere, and people coming from government or news sites will be confused.

I am just the type of person who likes to do one thing at a time. I think that the name should really be Kyiv, for all of the reasons I outlined on the page.

I think that the Kyiv page should be not a good article, but a featured article. Once I start on that path, however, I will probably focus completely on that. If you have any other requests, I would be happy to help. However, long ago I learned the expensive way that if I don't focus, I won't get anything done well.

Bogdan, your work on the UA-military topics is greatly appreciated. Just a friendly reminder, please take some time to make a good fairuse rationale for every non-free image you upload. There are dedicated users whose entire activity is image patrol. They have no interest in articles and tag images for deletion mercilessly. Thanks for the warning. And I hope I won't have to run into any image-deletion guys in the near future. But to be honest, I truly don't know the first thing about copyright/fair use/public domain etc...I noticed that you retagged this image. Would that sort of license be acceptable for most military images (given that I follow WP:NFURG)? Also, would an image taken at...for example an air-show, or arms expo be considered some kind free use image? And lastly, does "PD-UA-exempt" apply to anything other then logos? PD-UA-exempt applies to very little but logos, state symbols, flags, coats of arms, etc. Actually, we are rather lucky in Ukraine to have a law that puts the logos of all organizations, including the commercial enterprises, into non-copyrightable category

With the exception of the photographing the copyrighted work of art, the copyright for most of images taken at airshows or arms expos belong to the photographer who took them or his employer. If you took such images, you are free to license it in any way you wish. Your Wikipedia text contributions are licensed by default as GFDL. Many people use the same license for their own images they upload. {{cc-by-sa}} is a very similar license to GFDL and due to some small subtleties many find that it fits better for images than GFDL.

If you know the photographer or can get in contact with him, your best bet is to get his permission to release the image under one of free licenses. {{cc-by-sa}} of all free licenses acceptable here is probably the best bet to get the photographer agree to because it requires the attribution to the original author upon any further use down the chain and it requires those who use it to also release the derivative work under free license, thus preventing the reusers to attach any new restriction to the work whose original author released it.

If the free license cannot be obtained (newspapers would unlikely release their image under a free license) in order to qualify for Wikipedia, the image has to be justifiable under WP:FU concept. First it has to be irreplaceable. Secondly, the image has to be of crucial importance to illustrate the article and a free replacement not only cannot be found but reasonably unlikely to ever be obtained. For example, the images of the old tank that are parked in the museums cannot be claimed irreplaceable as any Wikipedian can go to the museum and take a picture of it. The image of the military unit in active action in a dangerous place, OTOH, is truly irreplaceable as wondering strangers are unlikely to be with the camera in the war-torn Kosovo. So, you should always add a fairuse rationale to any non-free image that would state three things:

1. the source of the image
2. explanation of why it is crucial for an article it illustrates
3. why the free replacement is not likely to be possible.

For instance, a copyrighted image taken by the media that would illustrate the aircrash during the Sknyliv airshow disaster would be irreplaceable for that article since there is no way to make a picture of this tragic event now and there were no precedents to this day of the commercial media agreeing to release their property under a free license (no wonder, it is their bread and butter.) But such image would not be acceptable to illustrate a Su-27 article, unless the article discusses the incident and the image would help the reader understand it better. Ukrainian Ground Forces

Hi Bogdan/Counterstrike (what do you prefer?), I put that tag there because while there are lots of sources, much of the text, especially the new middle bit, has no references. It's not sources, it's just that there are no footnotes. Would you like me to indicate where I think there need to be footnotes/refs instead of adding the sources tag at the top? Oh...that was just my mistake. At first when I uploaded the image I put the wrong knid of license on. Once I noticed it I changed the license, but the file history stayed down there and there no way to remove it. It cuts off because the initial edit is just too long to fit in that box. Airmobile Flag

That flag is of russian VDV, but I don't think that it is official, as for Ukrainian I don't know. Since there is no mention of a separate flag in any documents, and official armed forces flag list, I think they use the same one as any other ground forces unit. Ceriy 20:09, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

If you "own" a page (like your own userpage), then you can tag it with {{db-owner}} to get rid of it. Since you don't technically have that account, you can tag User:Bogdan with {{db-author}} to get rid of it. Admins will be loathe to delete the user talk page you've been using, though. There wouldn't be any articles if we ignored copyright issues and let the encyclopedia get sued into bankruptcy. Every little bit by volunteers like Videmus Omnia helps Wikimedia's lawyers to avoid dealing with it themselves.
