Salman Khan (born Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan on December 27, 1965) Hindi: सलमान ख़ान, Urdu: سلمان خان, pronunciation: /səlmɑːn xɑːn/ is an Indian Film actor.

Personal Life

Khan is the eldest son of screen writer Salim Khan and his wife Salma Khan. He has two brothers, Sohail Khan and Arbaaz Khan. Both of them are actors while Sohail is also a Film Director and Producer.

They have two sisters, Arpita (the youngest of the siblings), and Alvira. Khan's stepmother is actress Helen.

Khan has been romantically linked to actresses Sangeeta Bijlani, Somy Ali and Aishwarya Rai in the past. He had a surgery to get his hair back but his baldness is still very prevalent. He is dating fellow actress and model Katrina Kaif.

Career

He has starred in a number of top-grossing movies and remains one of the most successful movie stars in Indian Cinema /The Hindi/Urdu film industry, based in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), also known as Bollywood. [1]

His first leading role in an All Time Blockbuster movie was in 1989's Maine Pyar Kiya,[2]which won him the Filmfare Best Debut Award 1990 and a nomination for Filmfare Best Actor Award.

Although he had his share of hits and misses, his hits include some of Indian Cinema's Top-Grossing movies over the years, such as- Sanam Bewafa, Saajan, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Karan Arjun, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United, Biwi No.1, Baghban, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?, and most recently, No Entry.[3]

For his extended special appearance in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) as the kind-hearted Aman, he earned a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.

He frequently collaborated with director David Dhawan and the duo produced several successful comedies like Judwaa (1997), Biwi No.1(1999) , Mujhse Shaadi Karogi(2004), and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005).

In 2006, he will be seen in films like Jaan-E-Mann, Ravi Chopra's Baabul opposite Rani Mukherji, the multi-starrer Salaam E Ishq: A Tribute To Love opposite Priyanka Chopra, Juhi Chawla and Anil Kapoor.

And the film which will mark his Hollywood debut: Willard Caroll's Marigold: An Adventure in India opposite Ali Larter.

  • September 28, 2002. Salman was arrested for rash and negligent driving. On a collision with a local bakery, his car lost control as it ran over some people who had been sleeping on a Mumbai sidewalk. One person died and three were injured in the mishap. He was later found to be not guilty of Vehicular homicide.[1]
  • February 17, 2006. Salman was sentenced to one year in prison[2] for hunting an endangered species, the Chinkara, but the sentence was stayed by a higher court during appeal.
  • April 10, 2006. Salman was handed a five year jail term for hunting the endangered Chinkara. He was remanded to Jodhpur jail, and remained there until April 13, when he was granted bail.[3]

  • His turbulent relationship with Aishwarya Rai filled gossip columns.
  • In 2005, he was accused of threatening Ms. Rai four years back, then his ex-girlfriend, to appear at several events sponsored by the Mumbai Underworld, and boasting of his connections to organized crime. The "evidence" was a tape of a mobile phone call, said to have been recorded in 2001 by the Mumbai police, in which he also had (allegedly) insulted a number of fellow actors. The tape was investigated by the Mumbai Police and tested in the Government's Forensic lab in Chandigarh. It proved to be a fake one. The voices in concern were doctored and not real.[4]

  • Following the popularity of his character in Maine Pyar Kiya, screenwriters have named him Prem several times in his career.
