The Battle of Lyman was a military engagement during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, as part of the Eastern Ukraine offensive's Battle of Donbas. Russian forces announced that they had captured the city on 27 May 2022, which the Ukrainian Defence Ministry denied.[7]

Background

A month into the Russian invasion, Russia claimed to control 93% of Luhansk Oblast,[8] leaving Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk as strategically important Ukrainian holdouts in the area. Russian plans to capture Sievierodonetsk hinged upon its successes in the nearby cities of Rubizhne to the north and Popasna to the south.[9] By 6 April, Russian forces had reportedly captured 60% of Rubizhne,[10] shells and rockets were landing in Sievierodonetsk on "regular, sustained intervals".[11] The next day, forces of the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade conducted an offensive which reportedly drove Russian forces 6–10 kilometers away from the other nearby town of Kreminna. It was reported that Russian forces seized Rubizhne and the nearby town of Voevodivka on 12 May 2022.[12]

The last bridge was constructed between Bilohorivka and Serebryanka around 12 May and was also destroyed, with the last Russian troops having retreated to their side of the river on 13 May.[citation needed]

Battle

Russian forces intensified offensive operations around Lyman and made gains on May 23. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Russian forces have launched an assault on the northern part of Lyman and have taken at least partial control of the city as of May 23.[13] Russian forces additionally intensified artillery strikes against Avdiivka and are likely taking advantage of their previous capture of Novoselivka in order to advance on Avdiivka and gain highway access toward Slovyansk.[14] In the area of Liman, the Russians intensified its penetration towards the city center the next day, starting street fights. With the support of artillery and aviation, on May 25, Russian forces continued the offensive towards the settlement of Liman, occupying about 70% of the city's territory. Ukrainian forces withdrew to the southern settlements of the city, offering fierce resistance, while some soldiers surrendered during the siege.[15] After conducting a final evacuation of civilians and leaving food for those who decided to stay, the last Ukrainian forces evacuated Lyman on the afternoon of 26 May blowing the last remaining bridge behind them.[16] Ukrainian presidential advisor Oleksiy Arestovych said that "We lost Lyman." The Ukrainian Defence Ministry said that the battle for control of the city was still ongoing,[7] and later clarified the next day that the Russians had captured the city centre but not the entire city.[17] Russian forces claimed victory the next day.[18]
