Rafael Nadal was the defending champion,[1] but lost in the second round to Mackenzie McDonald.[2] He was vying to extend his all-time record of 22 men's major singles titles. This marks the earliest loss of a defending men's major champion since Novak Djokovic's loss to Denis Istomin at the 2017 Australian Open.

Nine-time champion Djokovic is vying to equal Nadal's all-time record of 22 men's major singles titles. He is also attempting to become the first man to win ten Australian Open titles, and the second man to make ten titles at a single major, after Nadal at the French Open.

Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic, and Stefanos Tsitsipas are in contention for the ATP world No. 1 ranking. In order to become No. 1, Tsitsipas and Djokovic must win the tournament. Casper Ruud was also in contention for the top ranking, but lost to Jenson Brooksby in the second round.[3] Alcaraz, the incumbent world No. 1, withdrew from the tournament due to a right leg injury.[4]

Like in the previous major held a few months earlier, neither of the top two seeds advanced to the quarterfinals, with Nadal and Ruud both losing in the second round; this marks the first major men's singles event since the 2002 Australian Open where the top two seeds lost prior to the third round. Likewise, Daniil Medvedev's loss in the third round guarantees a first-time Australian Open finalist at the top half of the draw.[5][6]
