Rafael Nadal was the defending champion,[1] but lost in the second round to Mackenzie McDonald.[2] He was vying to extend his all-time record of 22 men's major singles titles.
Nine-time champion Novak Djokovic is vying to equal Nadal's all-time record of 22 men's major singles titles. He also became the first man to win ten Australian Open titles, and the second man to win ten titles at a single major, after Nadal at the French Open. Djokovic wad also the only active major champion to progress beyond the third round.
Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas are in contention for the ATP world No. 1 ranking. Whichever player wins the final will replace the incumbent, Carlos Alcaraz, who withdrew from the tournament due to a right leg injury.[3] Casper Ruud was also in contention for the top ranking, but lost to Jenson Brooksby in the second round.[4]
As in the previous major held a few months earlier, neither of the top two seeds advanced to the quarterfinals, with Nadal and Ruud both losing in the second round; this marks the first major men's singles event since the 2002 Australian Open where the top two seeds lost prior to the third round. Daniil Medvedev's loss to Sebastian Korda in the third round guaranteed a first-time Australian Open finalist from the top half of the draw. Stefanos Tsitsipas emerged to be that first-time finalist.[5][6] Tsitsipas is the youngest finalist since Djokovic in 2011.[7]
Tommy Paul became the first American man to reach the Australian Open semifinals since Andy Roddick in 2009.[8]
