Flags, flags everywhere

DO WE REALLY NEED THEM?! 2804:14D:5C32:4673:220:CC5E:2105:CE2B (talk) 20:30, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There is a general precedent for including flags in these types of articles. Partofthemachine (talk) 21:35, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, the flags are despised by editors. Remove them. Abductive (reasoning) 05:12, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we should keep the flags, but please don't just remove them. Turn the lists into tables instead, and leave out the flags. Renerpho (talk) 16:06, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Note that International reactions to the war in Donbas (2014–2022), which this article may use as precedent, also uses the flags. Whatever we decide to do to one article, we should also apply to the other. Renerpho (talk) 20:26, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a reason why editors hate them so much? Thank you! Aurelianberries (talk) 18:24, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes we do as they serve as a navigational function instead of searching through the sea of words Abo Yemen 14:39, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 8 October 2023

International reactions to the 2023 Israel–Hamas warReactions to the 2023 Israel–Hamas war – Move makes room for a more inclusive article, in which Palestinian and Israeli "local" reactions can be added, or create a new separate article for the same purpose. I am in favor of either. Makeandtoss (talk) 13:51, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Note: I have modified the titles in the nomination to have "2023 Israel–Hamas war" in place of "October 2023 Gaza–Israel conflict", because that main article has been moved and because this RM is only focused on the "International" part of the title. SilverLocust 💬 00:26, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose - local reactions are a part of the main article Abo Yemen 14:21, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It won’t be too long where it’ll become too long and needs forking. Makeandtoss (talk) 15:01, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose - That would allow a flood of numerous non-significant opinions from media personalities. Ergzay (talk) 14:32, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So? Reactions to the Russian invasion of Ukraine Makeandtoss (talk) 15:00, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If they are non-significant then they can be removed as not notable. In cases where they are significant, the article currently doesn't offer an easy way to add them. Renerpho (talk) 16:14, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. No need to have this article be moved; domestic reactions to the conflict are probably best handled in the main article at this moment. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 15:01, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, but support in case the main article is forked. Renerpho (talk) 16:08, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And please don't take that as an invitation to fork it. I don't think that is necessary at this point. There is some chance that this changes by the time this RM closes, in which case my vote should be counted as "support". Renerpho (talk) 16:09, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support per @Makeandtoss Parham wiki (talk) 16:42, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose: The list is big enough as it is, without adding the opinions of hundreds of people who find a microphone over their faces and have something to say. Cambalachero (talk) 17:39, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reactions from opposition leaders and former heads of state

In a few of the edit requests above, Tomorrow and tomorrow has stated that consensus seems to be not to include statements from Opposition leaders. Is that really so? We have sections about demonstrations, reactions from religious and islamist organisations, but nothing from oppositions or minorities? Renerpho (talk) 13:36, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would object to the removal of Trump's stance. He helped contribute for this crisis. Borgenland (talk) 13:42, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We had statements from Morales, Trump, and Corbyn on the page. I do not know why they were removed, I do not think there was a true consensus reached. Paragon Deku (talk) 14:10, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It seems User:Guycn2 removed the section without seeking consensus. Considering all three statements had heavy media coverage, I am in favor of adding them again. Paragon Deku (talk) 14:13, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I suggest the statements by Pierre Poilievre and Stephen Harper, which were proposed to be added earlier and rejected on grounds of a non-existent consensus, should be added as well; of course we could discuss their inclusion separately, if necessary. Renerpho (talk) 14:15, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have added back the removed section. I have not yet included Poilievre and Harper, which I suggest should be combined as one item (considering both are Canadian). Any objections? Renerpho (talk) 14:22, 9 October 2023 (UTC) I have also changed the section title to "public figures and opposition leaders", to make clear that we are probably not seeking the opinion of any public figure. Again, this of course is up for debate. Renerpho (talk) 14:25, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have now addeed Poilievre and Harper, too. Renerpho (talk) 14:42, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks everyone, I realise I was too hasty to say there was a consensus, and I'm comfortable with the one generated above. Happy editing.Tomorrow and tomorrow (talk) 20:56, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

All countries (except dictatorships) have opposition leaders, so this could easily make the list twice as big. I suggest leaving out the cases when the government and opposition are in agreement on this unless it's a case like Argentina that is having elections soon and the opinion of the likely next president is as relevant as that of the current one. Cambalachero (talk) 12:59, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to the Canadian Prime Minister, add the statement made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly: "Canada unequivocally condemns the multi-front terror attack against Israeli citizens by Hamas. Canada firmly stands with Israel and its right to defend itself against terror under international law. My heart is with the victims and all those affected by these attacks."  Not done Her reaction is basically identical to that of the Prime Minister, which is already cited per the same source. I think it suffices to quote one representative of each government, unless there are notable differences (which is not the case here). Renerpho (talk) 22:32, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'd suggest that you include the statements made by Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and Defence Minister Bill Blair on the evacuation flights from Israel by the Royal Canadian Air Force for Canadian citizens and permanent residents and their families (news sources: https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/first-two-military-evacuation-flights-airlift-canadians-out-of-israel-1.6598348 / https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadian-evacuation-flight-1.6993695) ZeusMinerva25 (talk) 01:39, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jamaica and Belize

The Jamaican prime minister Andrew Holness states "The Government of Jamaica condemns in strongest terms the attack by the Hamas group on Israel, resulting in the deaths, injury and abduction of Israeli civilians. The Belizean Foreign Affairs Minister states "Belize regrets the hostilities between Hamas and Israel and calls for immediate de-escalation. Israeli Apartheid must end. Political figures: Canada: add that the New Democratic Party's Foreign Affairs critic Heather McPherson stated that "New Democrats are horrified and heartbroken by the violence in Israel and Palestine. We grieve with so many Canadians affected. The terrorist attacks by Hamas on thousands of innocent Israeli civilians are unjustifiable. We are shocked by the brutality, missile attacks, kidnappings, and targeting of civilians including the elderly and children. These are war crimes and must be prosecuted. We call for the immediate safe return of all hostages and call on the government of Canada to do everything in its power to ensure the release of Canadians among the captives (...). Our collective focus must now go to building the conditions of a just peace in the region. The international community, Canada included, must work towards a credible peace process that will finally bring peace and security to all in the region, while respecting the humanity and rights of all civilians, Israeli and Palestinian. New Democrats stand with all people in Israel and Palestine who yearn for peace, freedom and security." Canada: - Alberta Premier Danielle Smith stated that "I condemn the appalling and unprecedented acts of terror that are occurring in Israel and the region," going on to say, "Albertans mourn the loss of innocent civilian lives. We must stand firm in our fight against terrorism where it presents itself." (news source: https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/alberta-premier-joins-other-leaders-in-condemning-attack-on-israel-1.6593459) - New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs stated that "New Brunswick condemns the terrorist attacks against Israel.  Not done We list just national reactions here. If we start adding the reactions of rulers of lower administrative divisions we would be here all day. Besides, all of them seem to be in line with the national reaction. Cambalachero (talk) 16:49, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Therefore, I suggest you withdraw the segment on Scotland (part of the UK, which is not even a federation). ZeusMinerva25 (talk) 22:06, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Scotland is a nation though. Besides, the Scottish reaction was notably different from the general UK reaction, and notable for different reasons (the personal involvement of the first minister). Renerpho (talk) 10:28, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The UK is nonetheless a unitary state. If I follow this logic, if Scotland is a nation, so is Quebec. I recommend publicizing the reactions/statements of Canada's provincial/territorial leaders, just as it has been done with Australia. ZeusMinerva25 (talk) 17:32, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lebanon, Syria

Need Beirut and Damascus reaction, the absence of reports from these two border countries is quite glaring. Borgenland (talk) 11:09, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New Zealand

I recall there used to be a big chunk of reactions from the parliamentary opposition in NZ. Could anyone try to find and restore those edits? Borgenland (talk) 11:11, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Scope of article

Article scope currently focuses on the initial reactions to the war, namely focusing on the Hamas invasion, but not the continuation? Makeandtoss (talk) 11:53, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it will... in due time. The war barely started a few days ago, so far the war itself starting is the event everybody is reacting to. If things go on for long, we may report reactions to other events that may generate them. But remember that national states are not newspapers and do not "react" to everything, such as the minutiae of events of the war. For most countries, especially those not directly involved, the initial reaction may be all we'll get. Cambalachero (talk) 17:35, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For North African and Middle Eastern countries I think they should all be grouped into a MENA region

It would male organization better I think 69.249.102.223 (talk) 14:29, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

True. I still couldn't comprehend Turkey being fully classified as Asia when they're so closely intertwined with European politics. Borgenland (talk) 16:50, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion criteria?

This article is getting more and more bloated, with statements from countless organizations, some of which don't have articles here and haven't been covered by secondary sources, or only covered by local sources. As such, I propose removing the entirety of the "Regions" section, and removing reactions from organizations and people without a Wikipedia article and/or that haven't been covered by secondary sources (excluding country leaders). Thoughts? striked out portions following comments ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 14:32, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. Any statement that has been reported on by at least a few reliable sources can be included in this article. Reliable sources demonstrate notability, not us. Makeandtoss (talk) 15:13, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Would you support the removal of statements not mentioned by "a few reliable sources"? ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 15:18, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. If RS didn’t report then why should we? Makeandtoss (talk) 15:44, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The key word is the "International" in the title. That is, the reactions of countries/heads of state or others with a similar weight. Cambalachero (talk) 17:29, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The article has the {{prose}} template on top, that I have removed: this article is a list, and would be harder and more complicated to read if written in prose. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Hello,

regarding reactions from Bosnia and Herzegovina and its complicated and fractured political structure it is unnecessary to write all political and lower level govt as it currently is written unless we would like to have a big article of Bosnian reactions (Canton 10 is bellow entity which is bellow state level), therefore I propose to delete all and write only that of Ministry of foreign affairs which is responsible for foreign affairs and whose statements is "We condemn all forms of violence, especially the killing of innocent civilians. As victims of brutal attacks on cities and civilians, we deeply understand the value of every peaceful moment. We urge for de-escalation of the conflict and the immediate pursuit of longterm peace accords".

I want to include the following paragraph within UN point under the subheading International Organisations.:

The UNSC convened in a closed-door emergency session during the Israel-Gaza conflict, but was unable to come to a consensus on a joint statement.

The US called on the council's 15 members to strongly condemn Hamas.

According to senior US diplomat Robert Wood, not all of them were present, as he informed reporters after the session.

"One of them could likely be deduced without any additional information," Wood remarked about Russia, whose relationship with the West has deteriorated following its invasion of Ukraine.

Tor Wennesland, the UN Middle East peace envoy, provided a comprehensive briefing to the council that lasted for 90 minutes.

Russia's UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia ,emphasised the urgent need to halt the fighting and engage in a ceasefire and meaningful negotiations, a longstanding call made by the Security Council. Harvici (talk) 14:06, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
