Hi! This is my talk page, feel free to drop me a message. To experienced editors: feel free to stalk my talk page and reply to any threads here.To admins: I prefer that my talk page remain unprotected, even if it's being vandalized. Such edits do not particularly bother me and I prefer to remain accessible to anyone who would like to reach me. However, if the volume of vandalism is so high that no other solution would stop disruption, I don't mind if my talk page is semi-protected for a day or two. Hopefully, this is a rare occurrence.

Question from Dall'Abaco (19:51, 10 December 2023)

Dear Elli, I added the list of recordings and another picture of the Rastrelli Cello Quartet. I changed a references and left only some you've mentioned as more or less reliable. Would you please take a look:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dall%27Abaco/sandbox

Could I publish this article as it is now?

Thank you very much in advance! --Dall'Abaco (talk) 19:51, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Dall'Abaco: it's getting closer; I would suggest including more prose based on the articles (e.g. summarize the reviews it's received, and detail some of the group's background in prose, so the article is informative about them). Also, make sure all the content in the article is supported by references. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:54, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from DougWiki1960 (02:08, 5 January 2024)

Hi Elli. Reading the Glynis Johns page and the lead actor column seems sexist. Not sure I’ve seen or noticed it on other stars’ filmographies.

Question from Disstrackrus on User:Disstrackrus/sandbox (05:22, 17 January 2024)

How do i change the title of it?? --Disstrackrus (talk) 05:22, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Disstrackrus: you don't yet have the permission to move pages as you need an account that is a few days old and has at least ten edits. However, I suggest you don't move this page to become an article, as it is not written like a Wikipedia article and would likely be quickly deleted. @John mbui: hi! Do you have any questions about Wikipedia? Elli (talk | contribs) 15:26, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am asking you to revert your close and reopen the discussion. It was left open a long time and nobody thought to close it until three curt 'support' votes popped up in the last few days. I'd like a chance to respond. Srnec (talk) 21:24, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Srnec: Do you think you'd be able to refute the arguments around page views and use in literature? I'd be alright with reopening (though it's annoying to move the page back) but only if there's actually a good chance of the discussion going your way (also noting that I closed this over seven days after the relist, at which point the count was 4:2 and, imo, the arguments in favor of moving stronger). Elli (talk | contribs) 21:37, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Compare the pageviews given by the nominator with these. I swapped out the Battle of Baghdad (946) for the Battle of Baghdad (2003), which, as the lead says, is also called the "fall of Baghdad" (and I could produce sources calling it a siege). Even if the siege of 1258 were the primary topic for "Siege of Baghdad", that alone does not indicate that that should be the title of the article. My argument was precisely that "Siege of Baghdad" does not rise to the level of a recognizable name on its own because of alternative contenders like "fall", "sack" and "capture". For example:
So, in short, I'm not disputing the relative importance of the 1258 event but the wisdom of dropping "1258" from the title. Srnec (talk) 00:17, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec: So... I don't see there being a consensus to keep "1258" in the title if it's determined that this event was the primary topic. That just isn't how page titling tends to be done?
This does seem to indicate that the article 1258 event gets about half of the pageviews of all the sieges/battles/falls/captures. Which makes it pretty debatable whether it's the primary topic. I somewhat doubt that a reopened discussion would get a different result given what you've presented, but you have presented some decent evidence. Do you still want me to reopen it? (I will if so.) Elli (talk | contribs) 00:27, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thanks. Srnec (talk) 03:15, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I've reopened it. Elli (talk | contribs) 03:28, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, can you fix Siege of Baghdad? Right now, it is a redirect to itself. Where did the article go? Is it in the deleted contributions of a page that got deleted when you were moving pages around? Liz Read! Talk! 05:51, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, sorry, meant to redirect that back to Battle of Baghdad. My apologies. Elli (talk | contribs) 13:57, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Eliasorggro (15:47, 21 January 2024)

Hello,

I hope you're well. I'm currently working on modifying an existing template and creating a new one. Specifically, I'm looking to modify the template "Template:Infobox probability distribution" and create a new infobox template for Stochastic process.

I came across this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Designing_infoboxes, which provides information on designing infoboxes. However, it appears that the template is built with Lua. While I have some programming skills, the article suggests using a sandbox for customization, and I find myself a bit confused.

Could you please assist me with this? --Eliasorggro (talk) 15:47, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Eliasorggro: Sure!
For Template:Infobox probability distribution, its sandbox is located at Template:Infobox probability distribution/sandbox; you're free to edit that page to test out any changes. While infoboxes are based on a Lua module, you usually shouldn't need to modify the Lua itself to make a new infobox format or modify an existing one.
As for your new infobox, you can just create a new template. You do need to be autoconfirmed to do so, but that happens pretty quickly. Though, are you sure your new infobox is necessary? There's been a recent-ish trend towards having fewer separate infobox templates, so you'll want to make sure the one you want to create isn't redundant.
Please let me know if you have any more questions. Happy to help :) Elli (talk | contribs) 18:24, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Illinois government

Nice work on 1964 Illinois House of Representatives election! We don't always have great coverage of state government, so I'm glad you specialize in this area. I happen to also have an Illinois-related FAC at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/City of Champaign v. Madigan/archive1. If you have time, your input is much appreciated! Edge3 (talk) 23:08, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Edge3: I'll give it a look. Haven't ever reviewed at FAC either, but I'll see what I can do.
Also would love to collaborate with you on an article at some point; after getting into the rabbit hole on that election I've become enthralled with mid-20th-century Illinois politics (Draft:1954 Illinois legislative apportionment amendment is probably my next project, if I can find enough sourcing... which should be possible). Elli (talk | contribs) 23:12, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Illinois politics is very fascinating! Happy to collaborate with you on that article or others. Edge3 (talk) 23:48, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gog the Mild (talk) 12:00, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Edge3: so I should be ready to start working on this in the next few days. How would you feel about working on the background and legislative history, while I could do the campaign, results, and aftermath? (worth noting there is a good bit of overlap in some of these topics with the 1964 Illinois House of Representatives election, of course, but we can definitely go into more detail on those things at the amendment article) Elli (talk | contribs) 17:32, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be fine with whatever timeline you propose. However, as you know, I have an open FAC for the City of Champaign case, so I may need to step out once in a while to address any remaining issues. Edge3 (talk) 17:45, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Edge3: Yeah, no rush on it at all. (Also just started another semester at college, so I can't guarantee any specific timeline on my end either.) Am more just trying to figure out which parts of the article we should each do. Elli (talk | contribs) 17:52, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a plan. By the way, I also have another project coming down the pipeline. I just realized that the 20-year anniversary of the Dave Matthews Band Chicago River incident is coming in August, so I might try to get that fast-tracked to FAC.
Might as well ping @Gog the Mild now to see if an August TFA is a realistic goal. Edge3 (talk) 17:57, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ooh, that should be a fun one. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:09, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yuk! As it happens I will be scheduling August. Which will help but does not guarantee that you will get a TFA slot, even if the article is promoted. I would like to wrap up the schedule by the end of June. (This may stretch another 7-10 days if the FAC is obviously in the home stretch.) Allowing 5-6 weeks for FAC, you need have it at FAC by c. 20 May. so 15 weeks to get it up to scratch. Piece of cake. A good person to beg an early copy edit - "what have we missed?" off would be SchroCat. Remind me of this in early May please. Gog the Mild (talk) 18:18, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the club

The Featured Article Medal
By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this special, very exclusive award created just for we few, we happy few, this band of brothers, who have shed sweat, tears and probably blood, in order to be able to proudly claim "I too have taken an article to Featured status". @Gog the Mild: thanks! Also want to thank Buidhe and Vaticidalprophet, who helped convince me the process wasn't too intimidating, and of course all the reviewers here. Elli (talk | contribs) 16:09, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Out of interest, was it intimidating? Gog the Mild (talk) 16:12, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gog the Mild: It initially seemed to me like kinda an unapproachable process? But actually going through it wasn't that bad at all and it was pretty cool to get my article looked at by so many sets of eyes. Elli (talk | contribs) 16:14, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good. All of that sounds pretty much like how it should be. Thanks for sharing. Gog the Mild (talk) 16:18, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations! May you have many, many more FAs to come. :-) Edge3 (talk) 16:32, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Elli (talk | contribs) 16:37, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations, Elli! The article you nominated, 1964 Illinois House of Representatives election, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Gog the Mild (talk) via FACBot (talk) 12:05, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A reminder that as well as nominating this for TFA - perhaps for November 3 - you can now apply for a Four Award. Gog the Mild (talk) 16:33, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, my plan has been to try to run it on that date. Applied for the four award as well. Elli (talk | contribs) 16:37, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gog the Mild: looking into this more, it seems like you're generally only supposed to request dates that are up to a month out. Would it be acceptable to request November 3rd now, or should I wait until October to do so? Elli (talk | contribs) 18:36, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
List it here - Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/pending. This doesn't guarantee the date, but close to. Gog the Mild (talk) 19:56, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there, I wanted to ask, does Youtube video count as good source ? if it does, is this revision done right by a user ? --PrinceofPunjab (talk) 09:51, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@PrinceofPunjab: YouTube videos usually aren't good sources. Question from Godotalgorithm (21:18, 5 February 2024)

Hi, while I do intend to make various math/chemistry/physics related contributions to Wikipedia on an infrequent basis, my immediate reason for creating this account is to correct factual information on a Wikipedia entry for which I have a COI (MOPAC). I've read the Wikipedia COI guidelines, which are a bit confusing, and by my parsing of them, I'm keeping my direct edits there to a minimum. Instead, I've made a list of COI edit requests on the entry's talk page. Is this the appropriate way to proceed, or are my suggested edits mundane enough that I can make them myself? --Godotalgorithm (talk) 21:18, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Godotalgorithm: thanks for reaching out and I very much appreciate your compliance with our COI guidelines. I'd suggest providing some reliable sources for much of the info you want updated as it's unlikely that your request will be acted upon without them. Your changes, especially the first few that you've suggested, probably don't need an edit request, but will need sources in either case. If you provide a source, I'll look at implementing the changes myself. Elli (talk | contribs) 21:22, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I added sources for the dates that I mentioned, and I'm not clear what else needs more sourcing.
If there are generally issues with quality/quantity of sources here, then perhaps I should simply be requesting the removal of inaccurate information that itself doesn't have a reliable source rather than updating information. It is the presence of inaccurate information rather than the absence of accurate information that is my primary concern here. In particular, some MOPAC users have been confused about the status of MOPAC's software license, what the most up-to-date version is, and where they should go to download up-to-date versions. I suspect that this partially out-of-date Wikipedia entry is contributing to user confusion. Godotalgorithm (talk) 23:47, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
