- Stitchbird2 (talk) I have again been busy editing Wikidata, Wikipedia and Commons in April. Continuing with Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand/Critter_of_the_Week, updating Filhollianassa filholi, New Zealand grebe and Bellorchestia quoyana. I've created the last three (of 11 total) NZ native Plantago species pages (start or C class): Plantago picta, Plantago raoulii and Plantago udicola, and created my first Ourisia wikipedia page, Ourisia caespitosa! Only 28 more of those to go... I attended WikiCon 2024 in Auckland, and have followed up on the learning from User:DrThneed's WikiCon workshops by uploading 44 Te Papa Plantago specimen images using Open Refine with the wonderful collaboration of User:Avocadobabygirl, and added several to their wikipedia pages. Then I took a bunch of photos in my neighbourhood guided by Wiki Shoot Me in preparation for the second Commons/photography workshop to be held later today. Otherwise I've made lots of Wikidata edits to disambiguiate dozens (low hundreds?) of botanists as part of a project with User:Ambrosia10 to wikify the International Botanical Congress, plus had fun in Wikidata with Ingeborg Levin, Rosemary Steele, Te Taka Keegan, among others.
- Ambrosia10 (talk) I've been working three days a week on the Te Papa Research Expeditions project. We're in the process of organising three research expedition related events, an internal #1Lib1Ref event, a staff facing Wikipedia editathon and a public facing Wikipedia editathon (the latter editathon likely to be held mid July). I've also been contributing to the BHL structured data on commons workshop trying to decide on the how to model data, preparing presentations for the BHL Annual General meeting in Chicago in May, preparing for the BHL-Wiki working group meeting in April, working on the Wikidata module for the Hidden Figures CURE, I've put in 5 abstracts for Wikimania, one abstract for TDWG/SPNHC 2024 on the Te Papa research expedition project and have been working on the International Botanical Congress WikiProject, wikifying the conference and starting to draft up a Wikidata based poster for the conference and organising the workshop. The Women Genera project I'm contributing to is also still progressing with our research paper still being written.
- Avocadobabygirl (talk) I presented an introduction to Wikidata and Wiki Commons with Ambrosia10, and I've been supporting her as she works on the Research Expeditions project at Te Papa, including working through how it can lead to improvements of our own data modelling and practices, and arranging to host outreach events. I've done the relatively straightforward part of getting NZ museum directory data into Wikidata, and will work with other staff to improve what's left. I'm looking into how content related to Te Maori could be improved around its 40th anniversary. I helped Stitchbird2 load images of Plantago specimens using OpenRefine, and am tidying up the workflow and documentation so other staff can more easily do similar projects. Work to get other Te Papa staff more involved is continuing. I'm also looking into the option of adding full text publications and archival material to Wikisource.
- Marshelec: In the past month, I attended the Auckland Wikicon. I also made some contributions to the National Parks Project, particularly in relation to management plans, and the consequences of the 2018 Supreme Court decision in relation to Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki about applying principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in considering commercial concessions for operations on Rangitoto and Motutapu islands. A significant achievement for the past month has been a joint initiative with Wainuiomartian to prepare a new biography article for Axel Downard-Wilke - a committee member of WANZ, and one of four Wikipedia Admins in New Zealand. A DYK nomination has been submitted for this article, but it is currently awaiting a reviewer. I have also proposed the establishment of a Wikiproject to improve the article Christchurch. See: Talk:Christchurch#Significant improvements needed in many sections. Closer to home, I have discovered that the article Queen Elizabeth Park, Masterton is in a poor state and needs significant improvement. Fortunately, I have found a book giving the history of the park, and this will be a great source. I have noted that the article Masterton is not in great shape either. Perhaps we can recruit someone in the Wairarapa to work on articles in that region ? This coming week, Marshelec and Birdbabe plan to visit Bushy Park, north of Whanganui and hope to improve the article about that special place. Separately from work on-wiki, Marshelec has been finalising the 2023 Performance Report for Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand - this report must be available for the upcoming Annual General Meeting, and also needs to be submitted to Charities Services. We are also working through a change of signatories for the WANZ bank account - a long and tiresome process.
Future events
- If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
- If you're interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact admin @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It's really simple - we promise!
- 13 April 2024 "Picture This" event, 1 - 5pm at Photospace at 37 Courtenay Place, Wellington. This is a follow-up to the 9 March session. More details here. Quilt Phase (talk)
- May 2024 ESEAP Conference in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia Did anyone apply for a scholarship?
- 7-10 August 2024 Wikimania in Katowice, Poland A number of editors have submitted scholarship applications. Who has been confirmed?
Wikidata Levelling Up Days
- Wikidata Levelling Up Days events This is an online event designed to welcome new people to Wikidata and to provide an introduction to a selection of useful tools and topics so you can start getting involved with Wikidata. During April 5-7 and April 12-14 there will be presentations, live editing and social events.
Outstanding Action Points to Progress
- Otari-Wilton's Bush event ideation and organising We need an organiser! Group agreed to move the dates to autumn. User:Noracrentiss will talk with User:Ambrosia10 about organising resource. WANZ application could easily include an event organiser but we need someone to lead it and shape the agenda of the event. - Next steps? Stitchbird and Ambrosia10 are keen to organise but both are committed up to the middle of August due to Wikimania. Both intend to commit to this after that date.
- Parliamentary Library The library has had it's Wikipedia guidance for staff approved. Any update on support for project? User:Giantflightlessbirds was organising a lifting of the IP address block on editing Wiki projects. Any update?
- 2024 Annual Wikidata Fellowship Grant Keep an eye on this if you want to apply for a scholarship to do more with Wikidata.
- International Botanical Congress - members of the Wellington group User:Stitchbird2 and User:Ambrosia10 have funding either from their employment institutions to attend this conference and run a Wikidata workshop for conference attendees.
- WikiProject Te Papa Research Expeditions - A WANZ funded project being implemented at Te Papa by User:Ambrosia10.
