Can you not add "see also" links to Alucard Tepes to articles which have nothing to do with Castlevania other than a common vampire theme? If there is any connection whatsoever between Anne Rice's novels and this videogame character, you'll need to explain it in a little more depth. —Stormie 01:47, Jul 13, 2004 (UTC)

The Pandora's Box (musical group) link did not belong in Original sin. It belongs under Pandora's Box with the other disambiguation links. -- Phyzome is Tim McCormack 23:03, 2004 Dec 26 (UTC)

Manx article

I have responded on the article's talk page. Lachatdelarue (talk) 16:03, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Re: My two cents

Hi EliasAlucard,

Looking at both your message, it'll be a good idea for a start to list on Article content disputes of Request for Comments and see how others respond based on all the evidence over that talkpage.

- Mailer Diablo 21:23, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Good idea, I'll do that immediately.

moving the Manx article

Please discuss page moves before doing it. I spent a lot of time figuring out if the word "cat" was part of a breed name, or if it needed to be used in parentheses as a disambiguation of the word. most cat breeds do not have the word "cat" in them, the Manx included. "(cat)" is used in that article's title to differentiate it from the Manx article. I am going to move the article back to Manx (cat). Check the Manx breed standards to see that they refer to the breed as "Manx" not "Manx cat", as opposed to say, the Norwegian Forest Cat.

Hi there- I noticed that you tagged this image with the delete template. The delete template is only used to mark Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion, and should only be used on corrupt images or non-orphaned duplicate images. If this image is infact a duplicate of another image, please use the more verbose template {{isd|Image:new image name}}. If not, then list it on Wikipedia:Images for deletion in the standard deletion process for images. Cheers. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 15:37, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)

How do I list it on images for deletion? What template? It's 600 kb or something, so I uploaded a new version that's 90 kb, much more friendly for the 56k users and wikipedia's servers.
EliasAlucard|Talk 17:40, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)
You tagged it with {{delete}} which is really reserved for articles that are patent nonsense or meet the Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion. Now that you've uploaded the new image, the correct way to tag it would be {{isd|Image:new image name}}. Cheers, DropDeadGorgias (talk) 16:14, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)
Uhh, sorry I think I confused you. When using the isd template, replace "new image name" with the name of the new image that you have uploaded to replace the old image. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 16:21, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)
Perfect! Sorry to make you jump through the bureaucratic hoops, but it really does make our admin jobs a lot easier when the right templates are used. Thanks again, DropDeadGorgias (talk) 16:46, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)
Hehe, no problem man. I just didn't get it at first. Glad to help you out.

UserPage Vandalism

Re: Cerberus

Hi EliasAlucard,

OK then, as upon request. I actually thought that once users discuss on the talkpage they are unlikely to revert again, but then I may be wrong. In case I forgot, let me or any other admins know when thing are ressolved so that the page can be unprotected.

Re: Underworld

You write "If you're going to list almost the entire disamb page here, then there's no need of having the disamb page, right?" to which the answer is "wrong". It is sensible that where there is a clear probability that readers of one page are most likely to want a distinct related page - as here where looking at one film will very likely lead to looking at the others with the similar title - then it is sensible to detail those with direct links. Likewise the main disambig page as a separate entry. Please do not revert again, thanks. --Vamp:Willow 17:43, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at a number of articles, you'll find it isn't an absolute standard. In this case I noted earlier that there are at least six films by the name 'Underworld' and most only linked elsewhere within the article (no disambig at all); cross-linking at the 'film' level therefore made sense as the internal links (ie meaning of 'Underworld') still remain. We're here to make life easy for readers! Rgds. --Vamp:Willow 17:56, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Firefox market share

I changed things to: "estimates of Firefox's usage share range between 8 to 10% of the overall web browser market, with up to 25% usage share of particular segments of the market". Really, the 25% figures are unrepresentative of the overall browser market, and do not claim to be so. W3Schools, for example, is a site for very Web-savvy developers, who are much more likely to use a standards-compliant browser for development. Similary, Germany is the country with the highest FF usage share in the world, and is not typical. Compare this with countries with relatively low FF penetration such as the U.S. and China, and this drags the figures back down. -- The Anome 09:23, May 30, 2005 (UTC)

All right, that's cool and probably more accurate. It's just that it feels like the Firefox usage share has been 10% since the release of Firefox 1.0 and I'm sure that it has to be higher now.

Katie Holmes picture

I reverted back her picture to a resized version. I have never heard that we need to use a smaller size in order to save the bandwidth of wikipedia. I don't think we should adopt this kind of practice arbitrarily. Besides, I don't think using a small version makes a considerable difference. Say if every reader is unsatisfied with a small version and goes to a big one by clicking it, we don't save any but rather waste much. Maybe I am missing something, so please let me know more about this. -- Taku 10:31, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

You make a very valid point. But I've seen pictures that are in full size, and stuff like that. This is not good for Wikipedia. Their servers are overloaded as it is. Whilst it may be so that many users will click on the picture to enlargen it, in order to see it in full size, not everyone will. This will save a lot of bandwidth for Wikipedia. I don't know how it is for you, but for me, Wikipedia is painfully slow, yet I have a very fast broadband connection. More often than not, the thumb size is a more than enough of a good general size for pictures.
EliasAlucard|Talk 12:52, 10 Jun, 2005 (UTC)
No, no, I do see your motive, but I need numbers about saving and consensus among people; for example, wikipedia is indeed slow to me too but I am not convinced that using a small version mitigate this problem. For another, since I don't think this practice has been adopted widely, if not me, someone in the future would certainly enlarge the picture, like other articles. In sum, we need the numbers and the consensus to apply this kind of practice. -- Taku 22:42, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

Condemnant qui non intellegent

Hi, I wonder about the grammar of this phrase (I do think it is a phrase rather than a proverb; but I guess it could be in either list, really). "intelligent" is future tense, which does not make much sense here; the present tense should be "intelligunt". But as a matter of fact, "intelligent", though probably wrong, is the only version Google can find for me. Do you happen to know the source of the phrase? Regards, T.a.k. 18:57, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

P.S. Nice anagram, Mr Alucard ;-)

Hi there. To be honest with you, I'm no Latin expert. I don't know the language, but I've studied French years ago, which is derived from Latin, but not the same language. Just Google for the sentence, and you'll find it. It's found a little bit everywhere on 'Latin quotes' sites. Hope that helped you out. And thanks for the P.S. :) Now I got to lift some weights (weight training). Later.
EliasAlucard|Talk 21:11, 14 Jun, 2005 (UTC)
Ah, sports! It's been a while... The thirtysome quotes I googled appear to more or less copy from each other. I guess I'll just be brave, correct the grammar, and start a brand new tradition. O.K. with you? T.a.k. 20:08, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I'm back :) Did some Biceps training. Well, I'm all for it if it's wrong as it is now, but I got a suggestion before you do it: check the Latin version of Wikipedia. I'm sure someone there knows this better than both of us. By the way, do you have any notable skills in Latin, or are you just guessing? Not to offend you or anything, just curious.
EliasAlucard|Talk 22:27, 14 Jun, 2005 (UTC)
Ahem. <pighead mode> I am a Latin teacher, and my Latin is, in all modesty, certainly above average. In fact, I tend to avoid the Latin Wikipedia for its poor Latin... </pighead mode> ;-). Seriously, I do know a bit about Latin grammar. Not that it's made me a rich and famous person... T.a.k. 20:50, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Oh shit! :) Well then, I'm not going to ask for proof or anything, I'll just take your word for it. By the way, thanks for the compliment, made me feel "down to earth" ;) One thing though, could you perhaps edit more on the Latin Wikipedia? I'd personally love to start reading it, and look up every word possible, just to learn, but so far, I've avoided doing so because as you put: its poor Latin. Not that I'm any expert and able to distinguish what's good Latin, and what is not, but I suspected it from the beginning. Would be cool if you could bring some colleagues too so they could help you out. I think Latin is an awesome language, and needs to be preserved. Wikipedia is a good way of doing just that. By the way, the Castlevania hero Alucard in the video game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is where I got the anagram from. Pretty much a badass fictional character.
EliasAlucard|Talk 23:04, 14 Jun, 2005 (UTC)
Two points: 1) Most of the instances I can find on Google have it as condemnant quod non intelligunt (they condemn because they do not understand; alternatively, and this is just my GCSE Latin, they condemn what they do not understand); 2) Could it not be a subjunctive? smoddy 21:48, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I just found that version on Google... I added it in the proverbs C section. It sounds better (the English part), but I don't know if the Latin is accurate. Like I said, I'm no expert.
EliasAlucard|Talk 23:55, 14 Jun, 2005 (UTC)
From further looking, that would appear to be completely correct. However, I am pretty much sure that your original phrase could be rendered "they condemn so that they might not understand", which, while interesting, seems less likely... Cheers, smoddy 22:01, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Nope, subjunctive would be intelligant. Yup, the phrase "quod non intelligunt" makes perfect sense and is most likely the correct version. Wish I could find the source... Because/what is only a matter of taste; I don't think many Romans could have been bothered to tell the difference. @Alucard: Thanks for the links; things like that always help me vis a vis my students to pretend I actually know what they are talking about ;-) T.a.k. 22:30, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I moved it to this list instead. Check it up and let me know what you think. This is the source I used. Don't know if it's reliable, but it seems okay with me. Any objections?
EliasAlucard|Talk 00:49, 15 Jun, 2005 (UTC)
From the perspective of a humble Latin student, I would have to agree with T.a.k. (BTW, is Intellige(u)nt 3rd or 4th declension? I'm travelling right now and unfortunately, don't have my Latin dictionary with me). Intelligent (if it was 3rd or 4th declension) would be future, and "intelligunt" would be present. Flcelloguy Cello today? Give me a note! d.c. al fine? Desk 01:19, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I've created an article now for this phrase. Please expand it so that we can get to the core with the absolute truth of this latin phrase. I'd like to know who said it, etc. Thanks. Condemnant quod non intellegunt
EliasAlucard|Talk 15:14, 24 November, 2005 (UTC)

I think you misunderstood my reason for deleting [1] the URL http://cgm.cs.mcgill.ca/~luc/lunch04-oct18.html from Angel's trumpets (plant). Although the link includes a summary of the story (among several other things), the link to the story itself [2] from that page does not work any more. I think it's fine to link to two news articles, but linking to a personal page where the relevant link isn't working is sort of gratuitous. Brighterorange 04:45, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. I just wanted to give a more credible source, and that was the most reliable one. The link you allowed to stay was more of a blog, although fairly detailed and accurate.
EliasAlucard|Talk 16:41, 25 Jul, 2005 (UTC)
Wait, now I'm really confused. There were two links; one was to a completely respectable news source (the observer [3]) and the other to a personal web site (luc devroye [4]). I removed the link to the personal website, particularly because the page linked to a news article that was no longer online. One link to a real news source should be plenty, so based on your apparent misunderstanding of what I changed, I'm re-reverting to remove the personal page link and keep only the link to the observer. Brighterorange 19:53, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't broken. You didn't provide the entire link. Here it is: [5] The ananova link is probably broken because this happened quite a while ago, but I bet that when this incident just happened, the link wasn't broken. After all, he quoted the ananova story. I'll try to find better sources later.
EliasAlucard|Talk 22:01, 25 Jul, 2005 (UTC)
  • Huh? The ananova link is the link I'm talking about! Yes, it is broken, and no, wikipedia should not make external references to pages that don't exist any more. Since the personal page is a summary of a news article, it doesn't make a good source. I'm happy to have good sources for this article, if you find more news articles. Brighterorange 04:10, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Anne Rice vandal

Please add my talk page to your watchlist. I am being harassed by the Anne Rice vandal. Hall Monitor 15:57, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Done. He's been harassing me too. I reverted his edits on my talk page. I'll revert yours too if you don't beat me too it :) Anyway, he's been pissing me off, I've contacted an op, but I don't know if he has read it yet. Thanks for your help by the way.
EliasAlucard|Talk 18:01, 27 Jul, 2005 (UTC)
I'll take a look at it shortly. If your request is urgent and is a presistant vandal, consider dropping an alert at Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress - Best regards, Mailer Diablo 19:28, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Stub articles

You might want to give Wikipedia:Stubs a good read. Daniella Cicarelli, as it was before I edited it, was a fair candidate for speedy deletion - see WP:CSD. Cheers. --Sn0wflake 23:27, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry. I really didn't know anything about her, and was hoping that someone (like yourself) would fill me in on the details. It's really difficult to find facts about her on the internet. I searched quite some sites and to no avail. I mean, she's not exactly super famous like Brad Pitt, you know?

Alucard

Looks like DreamGuy has moved it again. Just FYI. Devilbat

Yes. I would like nothing more than to punch him right in his face for his annoying and vandalism-like edits, and of course, his immature behaviour. EliasAlucard|Talk 06:31, 09 Aug, 2005 (UTC)
He's also vandalizing user pages now. sigh. Devilbat
Actually... no... The "vandalism" you claim is actually tagging you and another user as sockpuppets, which you are, and other admins put the tag back when you (using anonymous IPs) constantly take it off. The fact that several editors have restored them proves it's not vandalism.
And, by the way Elias, you might want to avoid letting this guy talk you into anything, he's one of several sockpuppets put together by a guy who is banned for a year from all edits for contant vandalism, POV wars and, of course, extreme sockpuppeting. Every time he's caught and proven (which seems every week or so at this point) his block is extended a year from that point. Following that guy's advice is just going to lead you down that path to more POV warring and policy breaking, and you're already too far along to go much further without getting into trouble yourself. DreamGuy 04:07, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
Be that as it may, I think you're insulting my intelligence when you assume that I don't understand that he just wants an ally for his benefits. Second: I am not "already too far along to go much further without getting into trouble yourself." You are, however. And DreamGuy, accept yourself of being wrong in this case. Don't be a stubborn asshole just to feel that you're right (when you're not) and see if you can get away with it. If anyone, you're the one who's always into trouble.
EliasAlucard|Talk 12:52, 09 Aug, 2005 (UTC)
And now you are making personal insults again. See Wikipedia:Civility. Others have been blocked for that kind of behavior recently. You need to reassess the situation here because I don't think you are looking at it realistically. DreamGuy 11:57, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
As opposed to you, who is being civil? Please, go read it yourself. EliasAlucard|Talk 14:03, 09 Aug, 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I am trying very hard to be civil here. Have I swore at you? Have I called you names? I've concentrated on your behavior and not you as a person. I'm giving you friendly warnings on people you should probably avoid, things to do to stay out of trouble (looks like you didn't listen to me on the 3RR thing though), and how you can try to work together instead of blind reverting whatever I do -- because that simply won't fly, regardless of who you do it too, me or someone else. I am being extremely civil with you here, but you respond by making more personal attacks. DreamGuy 12:28, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
Don't you come here and play innocent with me. I've been around for quite some time, to know your behaviour. You've used bad language several times before. So you've managed to get me blocked now, when you know I don't deserve it. Are you happy now? Was this the best day of your life?
EliasAlucard|Talk 14:30, 09 Aug, 2005 (UTC)

Hello. About this problem. I actually think Alucard should perhaps point to a small disambiguation page. Like I said already, for some reason, I think that page existed before. I'm really not sure. I think we should all consider the existence of other Alucards. I think that, if we ask 100 people that know anything about Alucard, some 50% would mention Hellsing, while other 50% would mention Castlevania. Nowadays, I think it's more like that (if we disconsider the "lesser" Alucards). Even if Google searches don't show it. But I'm not sure. I think an action right now from my part wouldn't do much. It'd be reverted right away. I think some pages need protection. I, however, shouldn't be the one doing that. Because of what I already said, I'm already involved in the dispute. Doing something right now would be bad, since admins shouldn't take actions in disputes they are involded with. Weird, huh? I think so too. What you probably should do is to open a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard, in order to bring other admins to this. Neutral ones. Sorry if this is all I can help with right now.--Kaonashi 13:19, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There is a disambiguation page. DreamGuy has ruined it. Alucard (disambiguation). It showed up fine in the Alucard article, since I used Template:otheruses, but now since DreamGuy has been so persistent in his vandalism behaviour, it's been changed to Alucard (Castlevania) (disambiguation) on the front page. Everything was fine until he came along and started to vandalise the article with his stupid redirects and everything. I have now been blocked because of him, and I did not deserve it, I cannot edit anything. If you want to help me out Mackeriv, you're welcome to do that. I mailed Geni, who blocked me, but he doesn't care about DreamGuy and his behaviour.
EliasAlucard|Talk 15:24, 09 Aug, 2005 (UTC)

Aaaaah, now we're talking. That's what I'm talking about. That page shouldn't be ignored here. It's very important. Alucard should point to it, where people will have a choice. A chance to finding the article they want to see. Maybe the Hellsing one should have a little larger description on that page, though. There is a full article about him. I believe he is indeed important. Alucard could point to Tepes, the Castlevania Alucard, but I don't know. We could maybe be all neutral and let it point to the disambiguation page.

So you're telling me there is some error with the template now? Hmm. I'm not sure of what could have provoked that. As a last resort, you can always create the disambiguation tag by yourself. The tag can be created just like you want it to be. No real problems on that.

About administrators in general, from what I saw, I believe they have a tendency to avoid even looking inside disputes. They pretty much just do what needs to be done, and avoid getting into revert wars and things like that. I'm not sure whether that's a good or a bad thing. What you should be doing is bringing other people into this. Open up a discussion at the Administrators' noticeboard. State the problem there. Use simple statements, and only show people what's really going on with these articles. No need to mention that other user. Just explain people what's going on, briefly, and hope they will use common sense and take the best decisions. Also ask them to protect at least one of those pages. I think that'd be reasonable.

As for me, I think I will try refraining from this. I'm sorry. Whenever I take part on something like this, I end up being damaged. It's a real problem. Anyway, I hope everything goes fine.--Kaonashi 13:59, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't touch the Alucard (disambiguation) page. Any potential problem with a template there is not related to me. The disambiguation page was already a separate article, the main Alucard page was only about Castlevania, so I moved that to Alucard (Castlevania). He immediately moved it back. I moved it again, and I had to do something to prevent him from moving it back right away (which is nly possible when it's moved to a page redirect to the one your moving), so I redirected it to the first place that made sense to me: Dracula. Then because the redirect went elsewhere he was unable to simply blind revert it. At that point I looked some more and found the disambig page, but didn't know whether to go to Dracula and then disambig the top of that to Alucard diambig or go straight to the current Alucard disambig. Which one doesn't bother me. What did bother me was Elias here without discussion immediately trying to undo all of it insisting he was right. He did the same thing on Dhampir and other articles. But of course he's now trying to point the blame for something else entirely. Per usual. DreamGuy 14:20, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
Ok, I see what he's sayin about the template... man, that's an easy fix. You can either do it by hand (indent italicize type you r statement link) or in this case just remove it completely, as since the page is now not the base page it doesn't need to disambiguate elsewhere. So I did that. Not sure why that was such a big production. Since Kaonashi said he wanted the base to go to the disambig page, and I don't have a problem wth it, I'll go ahead and do that too. Cheers. DreamGuy 14:49, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
"What did bother me was Elias here without discussion immediately trying to undo all of it insisting he was right." You're a trouble maker. There's no point of discussing anything with you, because it's not possible to reach you. You will always love to be the minority. Despite consensus against you. You will not change your opinion.

Sorry, I haven't read the conversation, I just wanted to know more about User:EliasAlucard. :)

I thought this would be a good section to ask you, Elias, if you're talking here about Alucard, where's your Elias part? :P

Where's your "about me"? If you want to know better about me, I got one already! Hehe...

Some paralels that intrigued me into wanting to know more about you:

  • I could see you are swedish. I'm brazilian.
  • I want to know more about vikings and all the culture behind. Related to this, I'm a Ragnarok Online player.
  • I could see you are roman catholic. I was born in the same culture. But that's weird, because I thourgh you should be of a different religion! o_O
  • You are both en-3 and sv-3. I believe I am also en-3, but "br-3".
  • Do you like games?
  • (more)? :P

Thanks for understanding!

Thank you for the complient; It is most appreciated, particularly given the revert war and flamefest that has followed my attempts to contribute to Wolverine, with a couple of other users who seem to act as if they own page accusing me of being a "troll," of "vandalism," of "deliberately antagonizing others," etc. Someone else stepped in to protect that page, and suggested we work together to create an edit that will satisify both parties as much as possible, but after three or four subsequent edits that I made of the section I contributed to, they continue to come up with reasons why something's wrong with, and refuse to include any detail, source citations, or examples in the passage. If you could check out the last few versions of the section at the Wolverine (comics)/Temp page, and let me know what you think, I'd appreciate it. If you could, please let the others know on the Talk:Wolverine (comics) page, under Step 4, where the discussion seems to have hit a standstill, what you think, since the main antagonist who attacks me, ScifiterX, is fond of pointing out that several people agree with him (as if that makes his false accusations or logical fallacies valid), whereas no one is "backiing me up". Thanks again. :-) Nightscream 8.10.05. 3:50am EST

This isn't connected to the above, but fits under the heading, so here goes: I just removed the link to your review of Devil's Advocate (film) at the article. An anon had removed it before, and you responded that it was OK to have links that don't work on a specific browser. I agree with that, but not that it's OK to have links that actually cuss out users of that browser - that's completely inappropriate for a Wikipedia link. -Joshuapaquin 14:43, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Someone closed the Vampire FARC citing a lack of consensus to remove. I've restored it because there's still an ongoing dialog, which I believe should continue. Gmail

Hey, in the summary of your edit of the Gmail article on 26.8. 23:28 you ask: "→Spam filtering - why would anyone want spam in their pop3 clients? no source either". Here the answer: Of course nobody wants to have spam in their pop3 clients. But people wants a) to download messages that have mistakenly be marked "spam" by Gmail without having to 1. log into Gmails web interface 2. identify mistakenly spam marked emails 3. unmark them 4. download them with the email client or b) [a variation of a)] want to download all messages (incl. spam marked emails) to be able to double check Gmails assessment of their spam character. (P.S. the plural of one parenthesis is indeed parentheses) --Krueschan 19:45, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've had Gmail for around one year now (almost). I get around 5-10 spam messages every day. I can't remember one message in my spambox that hasn't been spam. But yeah, I agree that it would be cool if they provided an option for it. Still though, I don't think it's a necessity, since there are a lot more important stuff for Google to implement, and I doubt that anyone complains about it, since everyone hates spam, and no one would want to download it. EliasAlucard|Talk 22:30, 29 Aug, 2005 (UTC)
I wonder, where you got your confidence from, that no one wants to download it. Apparently there are people (e.g. that dude who wrote that sentence you deleted in the Gmail article, and myself) who rather have control over their email instead of leaving it to machines. I agree, however, that Gmails spamfilter is pretty reliable but I still had some few emails marked spam that weren't and even one single wrongly marked message is unexeptable. I know quite a few people (incl myself) who go through all the emails marked as spam once a week or so to check if there is something important in it before deleting it. And if your email client doesn't download those, you'd have to log into Gmail (for example) to check those in your browser. That's annoying for those who mostly use pop3 clients. --84.43.95.159 10:48, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I was refering to actual spam. No one wants to download real spam mail. But sure, some messages might not be spam. However, have in mind that Gmail's spam filter gets more accurate for every day that passes by. There won't be much need of downloading the spam mails in the future. Perhaps there is a need as of now, but it's not huge, and frankly, I'd have Google prioritise more important features, like IMAP4 etc. Six months ago, the need to download the spam-mails probably was higher, but I think you get the point. Anyway, I don't want to argue or have a dispute with you, (it seems like we're heading that way, and that's never fun here on Wikipedia). I hope for the best of collaborations between us on the Gmail article. EliasAlucard|Talk 14:21, 30 Aug, 2005 (UTC)

Alright, I created a poll for the Gmail thing. I already did interpret my more general question on the talk page as kind of a poll and since there have been no really dissenting voice apart from yours and since you wrote as well, that you agreed to my point, I didn't really see why the article should not be summarised. However, on the poll page I am suggesting to not only sum up the article but rather move the current content to other pages. That would have the advantage that wikipedia users who just want to know what Gmail is and what features it has etc. get a quick overview and folk that want to get more detail in how those features work and how Gmail evolved/developed could just click to the subpages. I hope, you'll agree with that proceeding as vote accordingly. All the best from Scotland. --Krueschan 15:41, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there's a need for abridgement. The 32 kb size for articles is pretty much a general recommended size for articles, or as it says: "preferable". It's not like it's not allowed to have articles longer than 32 kb. There are many articles on Wikipedia that must have more content than that. Examples to look at are:
And there's a lot more than that. Some articles are rich in content due to the interest of the contributors, and, not to forget, the subject itself, and how much publicity it generates; some articles just don't have enough material to write about, some do.
While surely the Gmail article has some redundant information that's quite not worth to preserve in history, I think that most of the stuff in it is quite interesting for those who really want to learn more about Gmail. I've learned a lot about Gmail and other useful stuff from the Gmail article. I wish the same for everyone else, and frankly, a lot of people would miss out on it if they had to go through the trouble to click on yet another wikilink (yes, there are people who happen to be that lazy).
Also, something worth mentioning is that this is NOT a normal encyclopedia. In normal encyclopedias, they don't have a virtually limitless amount of contributors, therefore, they can't waste too much time on writing a lot about less important subjects like Gmail. We on the other hand can. We shouldn't squander that ability by conforming too much to real encyclopedias. That's why Wikipedia kicks ass. This is how a perfect encyclopedic article would've been about Gmail:
Gmail is a free webmail from Google. It is famous for its huge storage of over 2 GigaByte. It requires invitations to get an account.
And that's it. They honestly wouldn't write more than that. They don't have time. EliasAlucard|Talk 14:01, 02 Sept, 2005 (UTC)

Removed information from article that needs to be bigger, not smaller

Hi, I'm just wondering why you removed the information I posted at Crucify (song). This was an article that was tagged to be expanded, and I added an instance where the song was seen in pop culture, in fact with a good criticism I might add. Why did you take it down? Please reply on my talk page. Thanks. --Jacqui M Schedler 03:07, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't encyclopedic in my opinion. I didn't remove everything you added, just the Beavis and Butt-head part. I mean, I fail to recognise the correlation between the song and their dialogue about the music video. EliasAlucard|Talk 11:31, 10 Sept, 2005 (UTC)
Well, the song was supposed to be so breakthrough, and say scary things, and yet the video that got made for it was really trite and full of cliches. But I can't say that on the page, because it's NPOV. What makes it not POV is the opinion of two major, animated cultural players! And, if the Beavis and Butt-head page mentions that they watched a Tori video, why can't a Tori Amos page point that out? --Jacqui M Schedler 13:03, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well could you explain it more thoroughly then? I didn't understand much of that conversation between Beavis and Butt-head. EliasAlucard|Talk 15:326, 10 Sept, 2005 (UTC)
You mean, in the entry? Sure. And we should find other examples, too, of where that song ended up. Leno and Letterman appearances seem obvious, but they're on my to-find list. What else? --Jacqui M Schedler 22:13, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gmail Inbox screenshot

Yeah, I saw what happened. My mistake. Plus, my connection is barely crawling this night. Sorry about that. I did fix it too at first, though. It should be fine now. Please take a look at it and see if the remaining version is really the latest one.--Kaonashi 05:46, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's the latest one all right, but it appears that all the reverting caused it to somehow not appear in articles. I'll put it on delete, and you'll delete it, then I'll upload it again so we can get a clean picture. EliasAlucard|Talk 07:51, 14 Sept, 2005 (UTC)

That's weird. It did really disappear from the article. Anyway, it's deleted now. Make sure to upload it again with the same file name. See if it works.--Kaonashi 06:01, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's picture perfect now :) Thanks for all the help, greatly appreciated! EliasAlucard|Talk 08:03, 14 Sept, 2005 (UTC)

No problem. Glad it worked. You actually did well by always updating the image using the same name. Some people just create new file names (like "file2.jpg", "file3.jpg"...), and the previous versions just remain forgotten until someone finds them and deletes them.

Anyway, needing help again, just ask.--Kaonashi 06:11, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What the hell? Now it disappeared again in the article. You think this could be some problem within Wikipedia? EliasAlucard|Talk 08:27, 14 Sept, 2005 (UTC)
I ran several tests and I think I MIGHT have discovered the problem. I think that is happening because the thumbnail you're using in the article is too large. I think the page is not managing to stay stable with the size of that thumb. It did seem pretty large to me at first, so I think it's not working well with the contents table. Try decreasing the size to see what happens.
I will have to go now. I also can't do much right now because the transfer rates I'm getting here are awful. If that doesn't work, wait for some time and we'll see what happens later.--Kaonashi 07:17, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, so was it you the one who made the description? I was trying to find in your contribs page, but I couldn't because you seem to have done so much, and by not being able to find it I've remembered of a cool idea I've had before about wikipedia and google. :)

I was hoping someone would fix that "removing information" done by Ratify. I was surprised when I did find someone doing that, and even more surprised on finding it was you. I hate people trying to remove information from a encyclopedia. :P Summarizing is not about removing, but organizing. =)

Very nice!

And since I like every good contribution made in wikipedia...

Thanks for your contribution and for reminding myself of that idea! :)

--Cawas 01:59, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I did indeed edit the image on Gmail and also the caption around the article as I thought it contained a lot of irrelevant information. You say you dont like people removing information from an encyclopedia but I don't think the purpose of an encyclopedia is to pack it with as much information as possible without thinking about whether someone researching the subject would be interested or whether it is relevant.
Edits I made were to remove the information about the browser type and the operating system that is being used by editing the image and the article. The reason being is that your browser type and OS aren't at all relevant to Gmail. Gmail looks the same in 'Mozilla Firefox browser in the Xandros Linux operating system' as it does in any browser or OS, so why should it be mentioned? Would you mention the spec of the computer that was being used or the time/date the screenshots were taken?
I also removed the text 'The Gmail Notifier extension for Firefox shows when a new message is received or unread. Rather than showing individual emails, Gmail groups emails into threads, with the number of messages in each indicated in parenthesis. In this image, the second message from the top is shown with a white background and bolded text, indicating that it includes an unread message.' simply because I think this should be in the article, not in the image caption. Although, I do understand that this information was related to the image and could perhaps be left in.
Thanks. Ratify 03:02, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
There's no need of removing it. I honestly didn't add most of that information. It was already there. Someone else added the Xandros Linux information. All I did was to provide a more up to date screenshot (the previous one was very old) of the Gmail inbox, that showed the invite label, as requested on the talk page. And if you're going to strip out OS information from the screenshot, why not do it on every other screenshot? Besides, Gmail does not look the same in Linux as in Windows. Different fonts are used. Same with Firefox, it doesn't look the same in Linux as it does in Windows, although very similar. And since every other screenshot of Gmail is from Windows, wouldn't it be nice to see how it's rendered in Linux for a change? The Gmail Notifier is notable because that's the only one for Linux users. Mac users have their own official Gmail Notifier. Windows users have two (Google Talk and the official one). Linux users only have the Firefox version. So therefore, it ought to be mentioned. By the way, how do you know what people are interested in? You may not be that interested in knowing what OS Gmail is rendered in, but other people do; that's why they add that information in next to the screenshot. For a small country, Albania is endowed with considerable resources. The southwestern part of the country is rich in petroleum and natural gas. The northeastern region has substantial reserves of metallic mineral deposits, including chromium, copper, and iron-nickel. Large deposits of lignite (soft coal) are found near Tiranë, and natural asphalt is mined near Selenicë.

Albania is also rich in rivers and streams with significant hydroelectric potential. These have been exploited quite effectively, making the country an energy exporter. A number of huge hydroelectric power plants have been built, mainly on the Drin River, and more than half of the country's arable land is irrigated, largely from the artificial reservoirs created upstream of the dams.

Hello, I saw that you are a native speaker of Arabic, so I would like to ask you if you could take a look at 2003 invasion of Iraq and Iraq War. There is a featured article in Arabic which we would like to know how it could be used the English one which is of course dominated by people who have either been there as soldiers or have their knowledge from western media. Someone also asked if the section about "related propaganda and phrases" could be amplified with information about the Iraqi side. Hi,

We started a proposal Wikipedia:Wikiethics to state the existing policies coherently and make suggestions on improving the editorial standards in Wiki. I thought you might be interested in contributing to that proposal.

Unfortunately, a pro-porn and pro-offense lobby is trying to make this proposal a failure. They unilaterally started an approval poll although almost no one including me believe that it is time for a vote, simply because the policy is not ready. It is not even written completely.

Editors who thinks that the policy needs to be improved rather than killed by an unfair poll at the beginning of the proposal, started another poll ('Do we really need a poll at this stage?') at the same time. The poll is vandalized for a while but it is stable now. A NO vote on this ('Do we really need a poll now?') poll will strengthen the position of the editors who are willing to improve the ethics policy further.

If you have concerns about the ethics and editorial standards in Wiki, please visit the page Wikipedia:Wikiethics with your suggestions on the policy. We have two subpages: Arguments and Sections. You might want to consider reviewing these pages as well...

Thanks in advance. Resid Gulerdem 00:43, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would love your help.

Hi,

I know you are interested in christianity, and I recently started a new wiki over at wikicities which is on the subject of christianity. Christian Knowledge Base is the site.

The goal is to have a knowledgebase on christianity from a distinctly "C(hristian)POV" rather than the NPOV. It is not meant to be a mere Christian Encyclopedia, but to foster a real sense of community. I'd like to include things like current events, news, stories, and anything that would add to both an understanding of Christianity, but also its enjoyment. I'm looking for help to build a resource that could really enrich the lives of Christians.

About IE boycotting

Hello, this is what I wanted to say before. Here [7] you wrote:

actually, it's more about boycotting IE for fun, rather than promoting.

Well, it maybe fun for you, but it wasn't much fun for me, an Opera user, when I got into your page, which is started with such passage:

So I can tell it appears that you're another one of these lame, dumbass, chickenshit, Internet Explorer dicks I've been hearing a lot about lately. I'm going to be frank with you: I'm not just going to sit here and take it like a coward; your horseshit browser isn't allowed on my site—I've banned access and condemned your dogshit browser all the way to Hell. Grow some balls and take the leap to Firefox, or fuck off like the little shit you are without any dignity and honour left.

This insulted me plenty, because (1) I don't consider myself lame, dumbass, etc (even when I use IE - which I do rarely, when it is really needed for my work), and (2) I usually don't use IE, and didn't use it this time. At the end of page, I found a brief explanation for such poor folks like me. I switched the needed option, and clicked "reload". WTF, I saw the same page. I started FF and copied the URL there. The page was still saying I should use FF. WTF. Ah, then I noticed that the URL is getfirefox.eliasalucard.com , so it means I was redirected. I re-open the original URL from the article, and whoa! I can see your review. Review isn't bad, but I think that dealing with users in such manner is bad. I think that other users can stumble to the same thing as me.

I think that you should rewrite your script so Opera wouldn't be blocked even in the IE mode. It must be easy, because Opera reports itself like this:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; ru) Opera 8.53

So it isn't so hard to find it is Opera. You might want to deliberately block Opera in IE mode, but this would be what I call extremism.

Also, the language of the warning page, seems to me slightly too rude for a text linked from Wikipedia (even if only IE users will see it, and they will be properly warned). It is true that there are many sites out where which deny access for browsers other than IE (and it is a reason for reporting Opera as IE), but they usually don't insult their readers (like this). A simple page with explanations would be enough to block access for IE users. Crocodealer 20:05, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For Christ's sake, man: it's just jokes. How can you feel offended by such immature language? Don't make such a big deal out of it. Have a little sense of humor; it's all done in jest.
Seriously, how can you be stupid just because you're using a lousy browser like IE? By logic reason alone, you can't. Chances are that you may not be as much 'in the know' as some tech savvy guy; but that's about it. And that being said, it's exaggeration from my part. Cool down.
By the way, I wrote that if you don't like the review, remove the link from the Wikipedia article if you feel that it bothers you too much. I just wrote the review because I like the movie a lot, and thought I'd share the review here on Wikipedia because I like Wikipedia a lot.
I've given a thorough explanation on the GetFirefox page for Opera users how to avoid being blocked, and personally, I think it's good that they find this block page of mine so that they can get informed and change their browser's identification--and by doing that, we'll get more accurate statistics instead of these fake MSIE browsers.
Most users who accidentally come across my site don't read it anyway, so I might as well have a little fun with them, you know? :)

A landslide victory for The JPS (aka RFA thanks)

Hey, EliasAlucard, thank you so much for your vote and comments in my RfA, which passed with an overwhelming consensus of 95/2/2. I was very surprised and flattered that the community has entrusted me with these lovely new toys. I ripped open the box and started playing with them as soon as I got them, and I've already had the pleasure of deleting random nonsense/attacks/copyvios tonight.
If I ever do anything wrong, or can help in some way, please feel free to drop me a line on my talk page, and I will do my best to correct my mistake, or whatever...
Now, to that bottle of wine waiting for me...

Image tagging for Image:DanteDMC1Alastor.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:DanteDMC1Alastor.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

Orphaned fair use image (Image:NeloAngeloDMC1DT.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:NeloAngeloDMC1DT.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Unspecified source for Image:Caterina Bonci.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Caterina Bonci.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chowbok 02:12, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Cladiahanna.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Cladiahanna.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 18:15, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use disputed for Image:Helen Slater as Supergirl.png

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Helen Slater as Supergirl.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:13, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Personal attacks - 24 hour block

I note above that you have been warned about personal attacks before. Comments like this ([8], [9]) are unacceptable. I have blocked you for 24 hours, to prevent further personal attacks. Please take this time to think about what is and is not acceptable. Neil  12:40, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Elias, I had hoped that 24 hours would have been sufficient. Please calm down. You are accusing an editor of racism - please either provide evidence for these claims or stop making them. Your actions are becoming disruptive; the first thing you did after your 24 hour block was go right back after White Cat, again accusing him of racism. And accusing me of bias. I believe I have now been accused of bias both in favour of and against Turks! Carry on making wild accusations and being incivil, and you will be blocked for a longer period to prevent further disruption. Neil  22:05, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Last warning - [10] Stop accusing people of being racist just because they don't share your world view. White Cat is, like you, trying to improve Wikipedia. Everyone has different points of view on what is and is not acceptable, and the only way we can ensure a productive environment is for these differences of opinion to be worked through civilly. If you truly feel there is a problem with what is happening, rather than accusing others of racism, please let me or another administrator know (either via a talk page or via one of the administrator's noticeboards. Stick to the facts, and avoid making it a race issue, and provide diffs illustrating any problems you come across. If you are unable to do this, then we will not be able to help. Contuinuing to lash out at White Cat will lead to you being blocked, again, for a longer period of time. Neil  15:51, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

you may wish to self revert

you have been edit warring on Bahira to insert fringe polemic which completely misrepresents the citation provided, and is not endorsed by academic opinion (the google results to polemical unscholarly websites you provided on talk aren't appropriate). i would invite you to self-revert, and consider WP:NPOV, WP:V, and WP:RS. i also find the personal comments rather distasteful, please keep them out of the discussion. thank you. Assyrian-stub

I don't assert that there are not notable Assyrians, nor do I assert that people cannot be notable as a result of their Assyrianness, but you are overbroadly using that stub. Also despite your assertions, that I was removing the stub from every article it was on, I looked at every single article it was on and left the stub on the majority of them. Only those that failed to indicate that the subject was notable because of being Assyrian was it removed. Stub templates are not the mechanism for keeping track of all Assyrian articles, WikiProject related talk page templates are. Caerwine Caer’s whines 23:20, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Sargis Bahirâ

I've nominated Sargis Bahirâ, an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that Sargis Bahirâ satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sargis Bahirâ and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Sargis Bahirâ during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you.

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for violating the three-revert rule on Sargis Bahirâ. Request reason:

I'm in the middle of a vote for deletion discussion on Sargis Bahirâ. Could you at least unblock me and let me continue the discussion? Also, I wasn't the one reverting. Their reasons to remove sources were not good enough. As a Wikipedia editor, you are allowed to revert if you believe an edit wasn't good enough, like for instance, when someone removes sources without a good enough reason. Also, if you check the talk page, you can see that I was trying to solve the editing dispute through discussion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Sargis_Bahir%C3%A2

Decline reason:

This does not excuse you from adhering to WP:3RR. If you were truly trying to resolve the dispute through discussion, you would not have violated WP:3RR. — Yamla 21:39, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
