Priština International Airport (IATA: PRN, ICAO: BKPR / LYPR) (Serbian: Међународни аеродром Приштина, Međunarodni aerodrom Priština; Albanian: Aeroporti Ndërkombëtar i Prishtinës) is an international airport located 16km outside of Priština, Kosovo, which has declared independence from Serbia but is not universally recognized. It is a regional airport that handles over a million passengers per year.[2] It is under the authority of NATO/UNMIK, and is the main port of entry for air travellers to Kosovo.
Priština International Airport carries out airport services such as receiving and sending off planes and passengers, cargo depot, catering and sells goods, as well as performs other commercial activities for airport users, such as renting the business premises, parking facilities and other.
History
Priština Airport was officially opened in 1965. It was initially opened for domestic flights only - to and from Belgrade.
During the 1990s the airport started operating international flights, mainly to and from Switzerland and Germany. Following the Kosovo War, the airport was reactivated as a military airport on October 15, 1999 and then started to operate international civilian air transport to several European cities. During that period of time the Russian KFOR forces along with other NATO forces and allies were in charge for security of the airport. Airport Priština initially begun its operations and other airport matters with 45 employed workers in total.[3]
The apron and the passenger terminal were renovated and expanded in 2002. In 2007 the airport served 1,120,000 passengers. In the last 3 years the company renovated and reorganized the airport completely.[3]
Award
In June 2006, Priština International Airport was awarded the ‘Best Airport 2006 Award’, an honour presented by Airport Council International (ACI). Airports across Europe once again competed in the ‘ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards’ for the prestigious title of ‘Best Airport 2006’. Winning airports were selected for excellence and achievement across a range of disciplines including airport development, operations, facilities, security and safety, and customer service.[4] [5]
Independence
Since the independence of Kosovo, Prishtina International Airport is increasing his operations. Many airlines told their interest for operating at Prishtina. New routes are allready announced, like daily flights to Rome and direct flights to Stockholm and Oslo. Airlines that allready were operating at PIA announced that they will increase their operations at PIA, from 4 days a week to daily flights, for example Turkish Airlines will do to Istanbul. Other airlines were interested if PIA could do 24h operations, if so they will come to Prishtina too, but it is still unknown which airlines that will be. Since the independence of Kosovo much ports for the future opened, it seems like airlines were afraid to start operating in Kosovo because of the situation with Serbia. Prishtina International Airport has a lot of plans for the future and this year seems to have started very well. [6]:
