On February 7, 2006 Symantec announced Project Genesis. The project was to progress Symantec towards Security 2.0, a vision of utilizing the company's infrastructure and partnerships with other companies to create an ecosystem of services offering protection against web threats. Genesis was originally scheduled for release in fall 2006.[3]

John W. Thompson, CEO of Symantec, highlighted the drop of high profile malware attacks, lessening the demand for basic antivirus services. Over a 100 million attacks were recorded from 2002 to 2004, compared to six in 2005. He emphasized protection against emerging threats such as identity theft, using technologies acquired from WholeSecurity. Another driving force behind Genesis was Microsoft's recent entry in the consumer antivirus market, with OneCare. It integrated file backup, PC maintenance, and traditional security tools. File backup was planned to be part of Genesis as a result, using technologies acquired from Veritas. However, Thompson stated file backup may be a separate offering; financial analysts were unconvinced consumers would be interested in backup.[4] PC maintenance and cleanup tools were to be ported from Norton Utilities.

Genesis was renamed Norton 360 on May 31, 2006. The PC maintenance, file backup, and transaction security features were confirmed. Beta versions were to be made available to the public in summer 2006, and it was slated for release towards the end of Symantec's fiscal year, in multiple countries and languages. Support for Windows Vista would be added following its release to the public.[5] The same day, McAfee announced a new project, codenamed Falcon, a "all-in-one" security suite similar to the just announced Norton 360 and Microsoft OneCare.[6]

The public beta was delayed, missing its summer 2006 shippment. Symantec announced the delay shortly after Microsoft began shipping OneCare, and a day after McAfee announced Falcon would be shipped summer 2006. The general availbility of Norton 360 was delayed as well, from Setember 2006 to March 2007.

A beta was later released December 20, 2006, compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, build 6000.[7] Users were provided free technical support for the beta.[8]

Version 1.0

Released on February 26, 2007, version 1.0 uses the Norton AntiVirus 2007 engine to provides malware prevention and disinfection. The Norton AntiVirus engine uses two heuristic technologies, SONAR and Bloodhound, to supplement the conventional signature-based detection. Heuristics help facilitate detection of new, or zero-day malware, since malware has to be identified first before preventative or corrective measures can be taken.[9] SONAR monitors applications during a scan for suspicious and possibly malicious actions. When SONAR has gathered enough evidence to "convict" an application as being malicious, it will take the necessary corrective actions by quarantining related processes, files, and registry entries. On the other hand, Bloodhound looks at a file's code for possibly malicious instructions.[10] The software firewall allocates Internet access to programs as needed and blocks intrusions. Phishing protection blocks access to fraudulent websites. Exploit protection prevents attackers from leveraging common browser and application vulnerabilities.[11]

PC optimization tools in this release include a disk defragmenter. Version 1.0 can also delete Internet Explorer and Firefox browsing history and other temporary files. [12] The backup feature allows users to select what files to backup based on file type. Files can be uploaded to a server, with 2 GB of storage, provided with a paid-for subscription. More online storage is provided for a yearly fee.[13] Version 1.0 can also backup files to a hard drive, CD, or DVD.

Version 2.0

Version 2.0, released in March 3, 2008, uses the Norton AntiVirus 2008 engine. It comes with new PC maintenance tools including a registry cleaner. The Backup and Restore feature now integrates with Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. In addition, backup and Restore supports having different Norton 360 installations backup to a central location.[14][15]

Version 3.0

Version 3.0 was released March 4, 2009. Version 3.0 uses the Norton AntiVirus 2009 engine.[16] Notable new features include the integration of Norton Safe Web, a web rating service. Safe Web blocks access to malicious sites. Additionally, search results from major search engine, such as Google, are color coded for safet (green for safe site, yellow for possibly unsafe site, red for dangerous sites, and gray with a white question mark for untested sites. [17] The toolbar redirects queries to the Ask.com search engine, however does not share code with the Ask.com toolbar.[18] A startup program manager measures performance impact and allows users to disable startup programs or delay programs. Norton Insight whitelists safe files to cut scanning times. A virtual drive is added to Windows Explorer. It acts as a interface between the user and backup locations.

Existing subscribers of Norton 360, with an active subscription can download the latest version without having to pay an upgrade fee.[19][20]
