Im not sure what the problem is here ... it seems that the filter is triggering on any wikilink ending in .com (based on a comparison of edits you made that didn't get through versus the one that did). If this is an intentional effect I will see if it's possible to create a workaround; if not I'll get it fixed as quickly as possible. Thanks for reporting this. —Soap— 10:21, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
- This is a fun one. Someone deserves to be trouted in that thread because he/she posted a link to tinyurl intentionally avoiding the spam filter instead of fixing the inherent problem that tinyurl should not be linked in the first place. It was the presence of this old tinyurl link that was being detected.
- However, it is supposed to check for old links so that this error does not pop up. The problem ends up being that I checked the wrong variable on the old revision, so the old link was not detected, and the filter assumed you added it. I don't want to go into the technical details of what's going wrong because this is a private filter, but I have determined that there is a bug in the abuse filter system and have contacted the developers accordingly. In the meantime, I'm going to remove the tinyurl links from the old post and ask the user not to do that, as well as look for a workaround that I can use. This bug should only pop up when a transcluded page includes an old URL shortener link, which should be between extremely rare to never (preferably the latter). I sincerely apologize that you were hit by this, and wish I had more for you. In a few minutes you should be able to make the edit. Thank you for reporting this. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 11:32, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for doing that, Shirik. The person who submitted this report already did make the edit, just without the .com on the end of his one link. So you're sure that it has nothing to do with the link to bartleby.com? —Soap— 11:35, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
- 100% sure. I've clearly pinned down the root cause of the issue, and I'll be happy to let you know what's going on via offline means. I have a flight soon so I may not be able to get to you until tonight, though. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 11:40, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

"Kulak" was on the filter and it really shouldnt have been, as it's a fairly common word in certain subject areas. Apologies for the inconvenience. This filter is designed to track a particular vandal and thus sometimes contains strange entries, things that may not seem to be offensive but help in keeping track of this person and his many sock accounts. But again, "kulak" is really going to do more harm than good, and so I've removed it. —Soap— 20:53, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

- Thank you for your corrections. Please be careful not to remove the remainder of the content of the page when you make an edit. The filter was detecting that you removed all categories (located at the bottom) from the page (as well as quite a bit of other content). Categories help to sort pages to help them be found more easily. If the categories were left in, you would have no issues. Well there are a few issues here: the filter is detecting that youre creating an article that contains your username, which is correct ... I recommend changing your username to something that represents you as opposed to the band, because Wikipedia account policy discourages shared accounts. This will help you get past those filters. The other thing is that the article needs a bit of work, specifically it should meet our verifiability standards so that people reading the article know that what theyre reading is true. Ideally you should find third-party sources that verify the information, rather than publications created by the band or any affiliated groups. This will also help you satisfy the last requirement, "notability". This is a tricky one, and I dont really know if your band would pass the standard as it isnt really related to the edit filter (which is just a computer program), so I would recommend working on the article in your userspace until you feel it's ready to go live and it can pass the standards laid out above. —Soap— 21:59, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

- I cant figure it out either, although I do know that the reason you were able to post the message on my talk page but not on his is because my talk page isnt watched by the filter and his is. I promise to take a deeper look at this after I get home tonight, since it could be a persistent problem. Thanks for reporting this. —Soap— 11:17, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- It seems that the problem is the last line of code in the filter. If all but the last line is removed, all edits by all users to DGG's talk page trigger the filter and thus cannot edit. I don't know why this is. I suppose I will have to remove the last line and tell the person who created the filter about the problem. —Soap— 21:12, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- I see now that I was searching on a truncated version of the page and therefore couldn't find the text that was triggering the filter (and it's there). Nevertheless, this filter shouldn't cause any problems like this in the future. —Soap— 21:41, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

I missed this one earlier. It was because of the "fag" in the page, and note that this filter only warns, and does not disallow. However it seems that this page was recently created and deleted; if you want to go ahead with the page, the edit filter won't stop you, but if the page is in the same state it was when it was deleted before, it will likely be deleted again. —Soap— 16:20, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

I wonder if it's time to consider disabling this filter, as it seems to have a lot of problems. It is of a type that really can only be either Disallow or nothing, since it tracks a kind of vandalism that moves very quickly. The reason it triggered on you is because archiving a page, by necessity, means deleting most of it, and that is something vandals also often do. But we have other filters that do similar things. I will look for outside opinions on the question of whether this filter is still needed. Thank you for reporting this; I'll go archive the talk page now. —Soap— 14:02, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

- Thanks for reporting this. The message was a warning, nothing more. If you were to click "save page" again the edit would have gone through. Still, I will look into adapting the filter to account for this pattern of removing vandalism. (The filter detected the words in you edit summary as potentially problematic, not realizing they came from the original section title which you were correcting). Please make sure you're not accidentally removing content when you make an edit. The filter shows you reducing the article down to just two paragraphs, and I've never known it to be wrong. It's easy to accidentally select text and then type over it without realizing what you're doing; nobody's holding that against you. —Soap— 16:00, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Strictly speaking, this isn't a false positive; the edit filter is designed to detect whenever an editor creates a page that contains their username somewhere in the text. This in itself doesn't mean much; if I were to create an article about soap I think people would understand that it is not indicative of promotional activity; it just may need to be looked at by others. Note that the filter is not preventing you from creating the article; only warning you. However, in this case, I would say if you were to go on to create the article, it is very likely that it would be deleted, due to its apparent lack of reliable sources and in fact any sources at all other than the website, and the fact that according to the article the organization in question isn't yet in operation. If you want to go ahead, it is not my job to stop you, but I strongly suspect that your article will be deleted. —Soap— 16:52, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Please make sure youre not inadvertently blanking someone else's talk page when you write a message to them; this is what the filter shows you doing. As an aside, the user youre trying to contact has not been an administrator for almost a year, and rarely edits nowadays, and he would not be able to restore the page for you. Strictly speaking, this is not a false positive; blanking large amounts of content from a page is often an indication of vandalism. If you're sure that you're right, you can go ahead and remove that section, but be aware that you might be quickly reverted (plot summaries are allowed, even in some cases if they are unreferenced except for references to the events of the book/film/show itself). —Soap— 00:26, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

You should be able to make the edit now, however I encourage you to verify that the edit wasn't in good faith. Declarations of vandalism should be indisputable and obvious. As this isn't obvious, you should describe why you are undoing the change in the edit summary. Thanks, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:53, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

- What the edit filter detected was vandalism. If this was unintentional, then double check that you're editing the correct version of the page (you will be warned when you are on an old version while editing) as this may cause content that wasn't added by you to be added as if it were you. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:58, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

- This filter catches anything matching the pattern (string)@(domain name).(TLD) because this is what an email address looks like. Since there are a lot of other things that fit this pattern, this particular filter has a lot of false positives. They are safe to ignore; please dont feel youre being classified as a problem account or a vandal; a lot of long time editors accumulate edit filter hits like this during their time on Wikipedia. —Soap— 22:02, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

It looks like you're pasting your reśumé as a new article, and the filter is correctly detecting that. I don't think there's any chance that such an article would be allowed on Wikipedia. You could try putting it on your userpage and be safe from the filters, but even there I cant guarantee that the content would be allowed to stay. —Soap— 15:34, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

However, I suggest you change to a different username, as our username policy prohibits the use of usernames that represent an organization or group of people as opposed to a single individual (a result of the fact that we also don't allow shared accounts). —Soap— 00:23, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

This filter is designed to catch whenever an editor inserts a link containing their username, as this is often a sign of promotional activity. If you are sure that your edit is good, the filter won't stop you from adding the links; however, it cannot be turned off, so if you are planning to insert a large number of links with MedPix in the URL you may want to consider changing your username, as it is at best somewhat close to a violation of the username policy against usernames that signify an organization. —Soap— 00:21, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

When a large number of people make edits to the same page in a very short time, this filter can activate and disallow editing to the page for about a minute. This helps prevent edit conflicts and in some cases vandalism. It looks like you went on to make the edit a few minutes later. Since the page has not been edited for a couple of hours now, it should be safe to continue editing if you wish. However please do note that every edit you make should conform to our standards for verifiability or it may be reverted (this also applies to the dozens of edits that were not stopped by the filter). —Soap— 19:43, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

- Sorry, this page has been placed under a sort of semi-protection now due to a history of vandalism from various users. Having the edit filter up shows that the edit you're making is constructive and can allow us to add it in whereas normal semiprotection would simply disallow entirely. However I find this solution potentially unworkable and will try to work out a better solution with the person who created the filter. In the meantime I have gone on to make the edit for you. Thanks for reporting it here. —Soap— 17:06, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

This particular filter will trigger on any edit that includes something that looks like an email address. As not everything that looks like an email address actually is an email address, the filter produces a lot of false positives. This does not mean that you should try to avoid triggering the filter, as it is common for legitimate edits to occasionally produce tags like this and nobody is going to hold it against you. There have been attempts made to try to re-write this filter to be more specific in order to avoid the false positives, but even despite all the changes that have been made, new false positives keep on appearing. Personally I dont think it's possible to write the filter in such a way that it would completely avoid triggering legitimate edits, though I'm open to suggestions from anyone. —Soap— 21:24, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

The filter is warning you about creating an article containing your username, which is correct. However, you should be able to create the article. Is it actually preventing you, or just warning? This looks like it should be able to go. Do be aware, though, that the edit filter only is completely agnostic about whether an article meets the standards of verifiability and notability, and that articles not meeting those standards may be deleted. —Soap— 01:48, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

The edit filter's role in this is that it triggers any time someone adds a link containing their username, which in this case you have, so strictly speaking it is not a false positive. However the edit filter says nothing about whether a given link is useful or not ... I think the most important criterion when judging the usefulness of external links is whether they answer questions the reader of the article might have in a way that the article itself can't. This may be why your previous additions of the link were reverted; however I take no position on the issue and will not remove the link myself nor add it back in if someone else removes it. —Soap— 20:06, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

- Because of the way MediaWiki software works, a change made to the middle of a line will be seen as the removal of the whole line and the addition of the whole modified version. Thus although this user only added 4 characters, the software searches the whole line in which they edited ... and in this case that's a whole paragraph. Further up in the paragraph there is the sequence 9999999 (in a ref), which matches the Repeating Characters filter. Unfortunately there is no good way at present to prevent false positives like this, which is why this filter is set to only tag rather than warn the user or disallow the edit entirely as some of the more exact filters do. —Soap— 20:22, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

I changed it Because Hopi have no singular leader of the tribe or Hopi people as was stated. Each village has autonomy and has its own chief/leader. the two were competing for leadership of the village of Oraibi

- Thanks for reporting this. There is no way for the filter to determine if a given <ref> tag is actually "real". Since this is an extremely rare occurrence, I'm not going to try to fix it, but please note that tags are merely intended to provoke further review of an edit, it's not labeling you as a vandal in any way. Any human would have seen that edit and realized it was OK and continued on. Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 14:37, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

This filter should be warn-only, and will not prevent you from creating the page. However we have policies entirely unrelated to the edit filter which prohibit advertising on Wikipedia, and that is why the page has now been deleted (see the messages on your talk page). —Soap— 22:05, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

It looks like youre trying to blank content of an article; with no explanation, content removal like this will always be reverted. If you believe there is libelous material in a page you should start a discussion on that page's talk page (but if it's true and verifiable and relevant to the article it will generally be kept). —Soap— 23:30, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Because you restored the original article, which contained a date in unclear format, the edit filter saw you as the one creating the date, which did indeed match the filter (xx/xx/xxxx dates are often problematic because different countries use different orders for day and month). Don't worry about this ... for one thing, the article is deleted now as it was a non-notable person, and for another thing, a lot of CSD patrollers and other highly active users will accumulate tags like this and people who have been around Wikipedia a long time will know that it isnt your fault. It isnt really possible at present to make the edit filter distinguish between the creator of an article and one who restores it after it was blanked by a vandal. —Soap— 10:08, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

This filter is designed to catch whenever a user adds a link containing their username, as it is often a sign of advertising or promotional activity. If youre sure your additions are legitimate and you will be doing them often, you might want to change your username, as your current username may come to be seen as a violation of the username policy anyway (if it represents an organization rather than you as a person). —Soap— 10:26, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

The filter shows you removing vandalism and adding some of your own. Was this a mistake? If that edit had gone through it would likely have been reverted and you warned for making it, whatever your intentions. Most times, adding email addresses into articles is inappropriate. I also note that your username matches the content of the article in question, and this is what the abuse filter was warning you about. I note that you are already blocked, but I figured I would leave you advice here anyway: Your username should not represent a company or organization, so if/when you create a new account, please be sure to create one that represents you as an individual. Additionally, you should take a look at the guidelines regarding conflicts of interest. Generally this type of editing should be avoided; if you really want to contribute in this manner, might I propose that you create a userspace draft instead so that someone can review your work? This will help address the conflict of interest. Thanks, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 23:56, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

- I've been looking at this for a while now and I'm really having trouble figuring out exactly why you got hit by this filter. This filter is designed to stop people that hit the edit filter repeatedly, but this was your first hit. Furthermore, there were no recent hits on the page in question, either. As far as I can tell, it should never have gone off. I do have a guess though. Were you getting blocked by the spam blacklist before? Did you get any kind of error messages before you saw the one that directed you here? Any additional information would be of immense assistance, as I really am having trouble figuring out what caused this. It's the Aramaic text in the page that's causing the problem; the filter thinks it's vandalism because its larger than the rest of the line (and the filter evaluates the whole paragraph, not just the parts that are being changed). I don't see any reason why it should be that big ... I think the "big" tags should be removed altogether, but I'll leave one in. You should be able to make the edit now. Apologies for the distraction. —Soap— 23:15, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

I think this may be a bug in the filter which causes a sequence of "warn" filters to amount to a "disallow", thus preventing you from creating the page. You can bypass the filter by creating the content in your userpage and then moving it, but I would wait to make sure your page meets the notability and reliability criteria before doing so (I notice that someone else has already blanked your userpage for this reason). —Soap— 11:36, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
