URL template

Why are you doing this? {{Urlw}} is available and working; any future changes will be backwards compatible. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 10:41, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't like it for a few reasons, and I didn't see any discussion, so I boldly reverted it. My primary objections are basically, (1) unnecessary obfuscation, (2) redundancy to other external link templates, and (3) potential to bypass the automatic edit filter (although I would have to experiment with this). Instead, I think we should work to consolidate these templates, before we start suggesting their wide spread use. It would be better to have people use already existing methods, rather than adding new ones, unless there is a strong reason to do so. If you want to add the "class", why not do that at the template level? Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:40, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Have you forgotten that we're already discussing these issues at Template talk:Url#Proposed changes? Adding the class at infobox level won't work, because of the number still emitting website or suchlike. I have no idea what you mean by "the automatic edit filter". Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 19:29, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, I haven't forgotten the ongoing discussion, which is why I said the issues had not been resolved. I do not entirely object to using something like {{url}}, but I think there are some technical issues that should be addressed before it is widely deployed. For example, why do we need three input parameters? Until the actual input format is settled, it shouldn't be widely deployed, in my opinion. Otherwise, all the transclusions will need to be changed. I believe that a solution is there, but I would feel more comfortable if it were being debated by more than just two people. The edit filter is discussed here: Wikipedia:Edit filter. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 20:01, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Are you content that these issues are now addressed? If not, what further steps do you think need to be taken? Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 14:26, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think all the problems are basically resolved at this point. There are some technical problems with using {{url}} with some particularly pathological cases (see the testcases page), but these cases are extremely rare. I don't think we should modify/merge {{link}}. It is an incredibly simple template that does not obfuscate the fact that a URL is being added, and has an important use in template programming when one needs to (1) strip away whitespace and newlines, (2) optionally link or not link text, (3) pass an external link in a way that doesn't break another template (see the current uses). The branch of the code that uses {{str right}} is a bit expensive, but that is more of a technical issue that I think can be addressed later if it is a problem (much in the same way as the other technical issue). Do you see any outstanding problems? By the way, I am currently working on replacing {{Infobox province Vietnam}}, see below. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:40, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

218.186.0.0/16 rangeblock

I notice PeterSymonds has not edited for nine days now; I'm not sure if he's taking an unannounced wikibreak or if the computer problems he had last month have geared up again. But in either case I'm not sure he'll be able to see the help request. I was able to find this diff, which is probably the reason for the block. I'm not familiar with this case, though, and can't speak for how many other editors may have been caught in the range block. Soap 16:09, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I believe based on this other diff, that the user who was targeted by the block is a very persistent vandal named User:Desmond Ying, but that there may well be innocent users caught in the rangeblock. Yet, even today, edits like this are appearing, which suggests that the vandal is still active. (Though it's possible that there may be more than one vandal in the range as well.) Soap 16:24, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just curious, would it help if I make a police report here in Singapore since the offender's IP is under the stable of cable modem belonging to StarHub TV. Frankly, I really hate such cowards operating under a false name and causing problem for the actual person, assuming that "Desmond Ying" is the intended target/victim of the perpetrator's wrath. Such behaviour of leaving the victim's name and contact number using a marker pen being scribbled down behind the public toilet doors here in Singapore is really not uncommon although the situation is still under control. However, there are laws in Singapore that governs the usage of the internet by ordinary folks and I believe that this continuing problem of harassment might warrant a police report if and only if Wikipedia considers it as a problem. Thoughts? --Dave ♠♣♥♦1185♪♫™ 16:39, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't have that much knowledge of the background of this case, but I suppose that might be a good idea. Perhaps this thread should be moved to WP:AN or WP:ANI? I will be busy off wikipedia for the next 12 to 24 hours, so I don't have time to look into it right now. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:42, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
JamieS93 revoked the talk page access for the range, so I've pointed the user to the unblock mailing list. Tim Song (talk) 18:09, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

While disruptive, such a rangeblock is I guess just a fact of life for users in Singapore. Between allowing anonymous editing and vandalism and getting would-be editors to register, I think the latter is preferable. I suppose you could file a police report... but what good would it really do? In a timely manner? --Rifleman 82 (talk) 15:51, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Park Grill map

I was looking for the pushpin option.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 00:01, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:02, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure what kind of code you are giving me. I do not write templates. If I want a map like the one Harris Theater (Chicago, Illinois)‎ has at Park Grill, what do I do?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 00:37, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I just realized that it would be easier to show you after I left you the message. Check it now. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:39, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Looks good. However, why do Cloud Gate, AT&T Plaza and Park Grill all have different coordinates?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 00:42, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good question. I just copied the coordinates for Cloud Gate and rounded them to the nearest second. If you click on the coordinates, it will take you to a few options for maps. From there you can check to make sure they are accurate. I used to live in Chicago, but I have since moved, so I can't go over there with my GPS :) Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:44, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
All three are spot on. Thanks.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 00:53, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I agree with Tony, the parameters eventually should all be made consistent. Even infobox building should be changed to pushpin)map rather than map type. Dr. Blofeld White cat 08:27, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another simple template issue

You seem to know templates. I posted a simple template request at Wikipedia:Help_desk#VP_nominator_template_needed. Can you do this?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 01:00, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Plastikspork (talk) 04:29, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Both fine. Thanks! Dr. Blofeld White cat 08:26, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Greenland

Can you replace the {{Greenlandic divisions}} infobox. It is only used in a handful of articles. See Qaasuitsup Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:58, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've nominated it for deletion, in the meantime. There are only three (3) transclusions. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 16:17, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there are only 4 such divisions and I converted one, so that would make 3 remaining. There will likely be zero soon. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:29, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes aside from Federacy Kingdom of Denmark parameter above Greenland that's fine. Thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:48, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. They are now all converted. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:54, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I likes places with da lego houses.. Tomorrow I may create some montage of these municipalities to pretty up the infoboxes. Alg has taken some fantastic pictures of Greenland.... Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:22, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Events that never took place

A few favors, can you please put those pages up for speedy deletion, these events never took place for various reasons K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 in Dortmund, K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 in Baku.thxMarty Rockatansky (talk) 23:54, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I prodded them. If no one objects, they will almost certainly be deleted in about 7 days. If someone objects, we can take them to AFD, although I suppose there may be a CSD criteria for such things. I imagine some canceled events may still be notable, although these clearly are not. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:24, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest redirecting, instead, to K-1 World Grand Prix, with a note there that the events were scheduled, but dd not take place. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 19:08, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Road infoboxes

This may be outside your field of interest, but just so you're aware: Template talk:Infobox road#Other road infoboxes. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 20:30, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I was watching it for a bit. I am glad to see that it appears to be going in the right direction with some very capable admins handling the consolidation. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:19, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Đắk Lắk Province

Hello I replaced the infobox in Đắk Lắk Province. Can you add an Ethnicities parameter to the infobox settlement so you can simply add rather than having to go down the population plank route. I;ve placed them under Demonym until you can attend to it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:26, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How is that? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:20, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Much better, thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:37, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great. I will convert the rest as I have time. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:39, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Irish infobox is redundant. Check out Allihies and Cork (city). Now see Naas. Ill add Irish villages to my infobox tasks... Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:01, 16 June 2010 (UTC) Can you add a |population_rural = underneath |population_urban = in infobox settlement? Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:27, 16 June 2010 (UTC) Grrr.... Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:49, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Propose it at Template talk:Infobox settlement and if there are no objections I am happy to add it. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:52, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK. Well I proposed the black locator a month ago and nobody pbjected and you didn't update it...Could you give it a trial, maybe make the dot a tad bigger. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:53, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If I forget to update something, add a {{editprotect}} to the section and I, or someone else, can attend to it. Otherwise, I have a tendency to forget about things. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:31, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stop acting like a gestapo and selectively editing my tribe's history and folklore

Seems like you only want the "Yemeni" narrative to be seen. Despite the fact that we --the Barakis-- KNOW our own (passed down) narrative. Who are you representing??? Volleyball

I have seen that you edited some volleyball articles. Some players articles, most of them looks outdated. I would like to improve players by country. Could you please choose a country to contribute with? Please take a look on Yekaterina Gamova, Hélia Souza, Serena Ortolani and Kenia Carcaces for a model to follow. Please can you please improve some volleyball players with infobox and some addons? References are very important. Let me know. Oscar987 21:40, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

infobox road updates and US territories

The plan is to use |state=XX where XX is the USPS abbreviations for the states and territories in the US, not a |country= value for them. LIkewise, with the |province= and Canada. Imzadi 1979  05:31, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. Guam looks fine now. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:01, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
US Highways and Interstates that are written for a single state shouldn't be updated to |country=USA. Imzadi 1979  20:42, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So how should they be updated to take them out of the tracking category? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 20:45, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
|state=XX, where XX is the USPS abbreviation for the state in question. – TMF 20:54, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 20:56, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is your purge script done? We think we have the categories cleared out, and we'd like to know if other articles will pop in. Imzadi 1979  03:32, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the first pass finished about eight hours ago. Let me know if you want me to have it make another pass. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 03:54, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Another pass would be great. I added a few more deprecated parameters to the pile (all of which were phased out long ago but never removed from articles) and also eliminated one of the three tracking categories. TIA. – TMF 06:09, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like we need one last pass for this stage - while fixing the second round of deprecated parameters, I found some more that need to be removed. – TMF 16:50, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I will start it again, it takes about 18 hours to process the approx. 12,000 transclusions (mostly due to friendly throttling so as not to overload the servers). Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:53, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Thanks a lot for doing this. – TMF 17:01, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey again. =) We just implemented the last stage of the infobox revamp, and with that brings the last round of transclusion errors. Could you run the purge script one last time for us? TIA. – TMF 02:11, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, no problem. I started it again, only 12566 articles to purge! It should be done in about 18 hours. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 03:48, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a particular reason you're using the hacky {{{subst|}}} when we've got safesubst now? [1] Curious. –xenotalk 18:18, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not really, I was just following what was in the code before. I fixed it. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:26, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. No worries. It's way easier because you don't need the silly subst=subst: bit. –xenotalk 18:52, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

en dash template

Hi, you just edited it.

The accompanying text includes no mention at all of where the template, with its spacing on either side, should not be used—the prime example is in year ranges such as "1990–92" (WP:MOSDASH). This needs to be displayed prominently; I have had to get rid of this template in many articles in such instances, which are a breach of the styleguide. Are you able to add this point? Thank you for correcting Virginiacity; Sapere aude6; 198.76.89.7: These are all IDs of one and the same person and should be investigated for Socks Violations.

Kindly remove the following Personal Opinion under the History section as this has no reference and is purely the autors own personal opinion. Thanks!

Just like Elphinstone, Captain Leech was "hypothesizing" about the mysterious origins of the Barakis/Baraks/Urmurs/Burkis based on the narrative probably fed to him by the Barakis/Urmurs. After all, why would most of them trust this feringhee with their "origins," not being able to discern (at face value) what his true intentions might be? This was/is a region characterized by unending warfare and strife, inhabited by xenophobic/self segregating tribes. The "Yemen/Arab" narrative, it can be argued, was an attempt of a "foreign" people to successfully embed/survive, especially after Pir Roshan's (Bayazid Khan)enemies, and orthodox Pushtuns in the north, (Yusufzai, Khattak etc.) regarded him as a heretic due to his "progressive/heretical/revolutionary" ideas. It is rightfully said: "the victors write/disseminate the historical narrative." It can, therefore, be postulated that the Barakis (later "Burki" in the 20th century) were desperate to wipe out any public mention of Pir Roshan's ideas (although many of them privately espoused his views). Thus, their counter narrative to Khushal Khan Khattak's poetic attacks of "Pir Rokhan" (so much for Khattak showing gratitude towards the man -Pir Roshan—who invented Pushtu script which enabled Khattak's prolific writing in Pashto less than a century later!) by some shrewd Barakis/Urmurs (unidentified) to reinvent Bayazid Khan's lineage (and suggesting he was an embed, and not native to the tribe, even though the Baraki have been one of the most reluctant Pushtun tribes to marry outside, let alone a non-Pashtun) as being that of the Ansar! (as in an Ansari from Medina/Yathrib). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 2011khan (talkcontribs) 09:10, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I see that a few weeks back you made a small but helpful edit on a page that I created: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Naparstek.

I'm trying to figure out how to do proper reference citations on this page now. I can't seem to be able to do it. Was wondering if you could advise.

edit conflict

Hi Spork,

It looks like you are currently fixing up that reference issue. Thanks. I just encountered an editing conflict as I tried to add one more document to the reference list. I copied your code and came up with this...

[1]

But since you are editing it does not seem to want to allow me to add this item to the reference list.

Still figuring out this whole wikipedia thing.

Yes, edit conflicts can happen when two people are trying to work on the page at the same time. I am done working on it (for now), so that shouldn't happen again any time soon. The list of references at the bottom need to be integrated into the text, like I did with the nytimes ref. Let me know if you want more advice or technical help. Template:Infobox islands

Hi. I noticed you've been doing some islands work. Time for a redesign? Perhaps you could update the infobox and remove the nasty looking mint headers and make it look like infobox settlement? That also goes for formatting location in a proper fashion first not at the bottom back to front... Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:28, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea. I was starting by sorting out the wonky parameters. I am going to add better coordinates and location map options in a bit. Did we end up deleting the US version templates? ... and Heather Mills not only danced in the US, she ICE SKATED too!!??? These all strike me as British productions. Yes, I just closed the TFD for the US version, and found these while deleting the lot. I don't have that strong of a preference for/against deletion, but figured you might since you nominated the first batch. I might revive part of the main US template with just the season navigation part. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:40, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take a look in a bit and if they are as redundant as the DWTS US ones, I'll likely tack them in below the "pros" template you just nominated. I like the dancing stuff, don't get me wrong - they are the only reality shows I watch, but enough is likely enough. Wildhartlivie (talk) 00:02, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SporkBot

Could you explain the purpose behind [2]? Thanks. – TMF 21:11, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That would be a bug. The list of pages to purge was generated before the bot ran, and this is what happens when it tried to purge a deleted page. I will update the script to prevent it from creating pages. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:15, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, ok. Just wanted to make sure the bot wasn't on an evil mission to mass create pages with a single digit. =) – TMF 21:20, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, it just so happens that "2" is the return code when the page does not exist. I had never seen this before since usually a page does not get deleted in between the time that the list is generated and the pages are purged, but with a list that takes 18 hours to process, this can definitely happen. Thanks again. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:00, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Care to review this? There are threads related to it on the article talk page, User talk:Viriditas, User talk:Maile66, and User talk:Wildhartlivie. Jack Merridew 18:07, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
