Herbal Essences is a brand of shampoo, hair conditioner, and hair coloring by Clairol.

Herbal Essences (and its parent company Procter & Gamble) is subject to an anti-vivisection campaign by Uncaged Campaigns.[1] There are many claims that Herbal Essences test on animals but according to the FAQ section on the Herbal Essences website, it states that they do not.[2]

On March 12, 2010 a press conference was held in Anaheim, CA where Procter & Gamble announced that they will reformulate their Herbal Essences brand. The reason they decided to reformulate the brand is to reduce the levels of I,4-dioxane. I,4-dioxane is defined as:

1,4-dioxane is generated as a byproduct of ethoxylation, a process used by some companies to provide mildness to harsh cleaning
ingredients, which requires use of the cancer-causing petrochemical ethylene oxide. 1,4-dioxane is considered a chemical “known to the
State of California to cause cancer” under Proposition 65, and is also suspected as a kidney toxicant, neurotoxicant and respi¬ratory
toxicant, among others, according to the California EPA. [3]
