Mohi-ud-Din Islamic Medical College is the first Medical College of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, both in public and private sector[1]. The college is built with the mission to produce quality medical professionals and well skilled human capital in the field of medicine for the welfare of Pakistani nation in particular and for the humanity in general.

History

Mohi-ud-Din Islamic Medical College has recently been established in Mirpur, Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The college is built with the funding and efforts of several dedicated people especially British Pakistani benefactors. One thousand bed hospital is under construction which will be used as teaching hospital for the college. The Government of Azad Jammu & Kashmir has affiliated District Headquarters Hospital Mirpur with the college as teaching hospital. The college started its first MBBS class on 27th April, 2009 (late session of 2008).

Location

The college is located in the south-east of famous Mangla Dam in the beautiful city of Mirpur, Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The college is located in the Industrial Area, 5 Km from down town. Mirpur city is situated in the south-east of Islamabad at 2 hours’ drive and linked with G.T. road at Dina at a distance of 25 Km. The total area covered by the college is 3.5 lac square feet.

Faculty

The college offers Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree (which is a five-year undergraduate programme equivalent to MD in the United States). High profile faculty and staff has been appointed a per PMDC criteria.

Administration

The college is headed by Chief Executive and supported by the Principal. The administrative functions are carried out on the principle of division of work.

Recognition

Mohi-ud-Din Islamic Medical College is recognized by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council and approved by Ministry of Health, Government of Pakistan. The PMDC has allowed the college to enroll 100 students per year. The college has not been listed in the AVICENNA Directory (WHO Directory) for medicine yet[2].

Admissions

The college has the capacity to admit 100 students annually from Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Pakistan and abroad. The admission on all seats is based on merit without distinction of caste, creed, gender or place of origin or domicile.

International Students

Foreign Students may also seek admission in the college on their reserved seats. The medium of instructions is English. A foreign candidate is therefore required to submit a certificate from head of institution last attended to effect that he/she can read, write and speak English fluently and that medium of instructions was English. There are 20 seats for International Students.

Entry test

Entry test is a multiple-choice test. The time allowed is one hour. The test consists of subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Maximum marks are 100.

Merit

Admission merit is determined on the basis of 40% weight-age for academic performance and 60% weight-age for Entry Test and Interview.

Selection

A Medical Board, constituted by the Medical College examines the selected candidates. The candidate should possess adequate mental and physical health to be able to obtain medical education and be able to practice as a General Duty Medical Officer.

Hostel Facility

The Hostel facilities for five hundred Male and five hundred female students separately equipped with all requisite facilities have been provided. A separate hostel for Faculty and Staff has also become functional.
