Assignment 6

Direct lobbying refers to attempts to influence a legislative body through communication with a member or employee of a legislative body, or with a government official who participates in formulating legislation.[1] In order to be considered direct lobbying, the party must directly communicate the specific piece of legislature they want to influence. They must also propose the new position and request that their position be taken into account during the legislation process. Lobbying, a standard method used to influence and/or change a piece of legislation, is a common practice in all levels of legislature including Congress, state legislation, and local legislation. If those lobbying do not state their position and ask for influence, it is not technically considered to be lobbying. [2] During the direct lobbying process, the individual presenting the suggestions to the legislator may choose to introduce new statistics to inform the legislator of any recent information which may have been missed otherwise. [3] Another common use of direct lobbying is the attempt to persuade the general public about a ballot proposal, in which case the public is considered to be the legislator. Unlike grassroots lobbying, which influences the public opinion, this aspect of direct lobbying attempts to alter the legislature before it is placed on the ballot.[4] According to a meta-analysis, it was discovered that direct lobbying is used along-side grassroots lobbying.[5] There is evidence that groups are much more likely to lobby directly previous allies in the organization, rather than opponents. [6] Allies are also directly lobbied if a counter lobby is brought to light. [7]

Re. Assignment 6

Hi Anna, I looked through your essay on lobbying and it is pretty good! I like the way you had reliable sources. Reliable sources plays a very important role in Wikipedia articles and it is good that you have them in your essay. But, I noticed a couple of things which can be worked on to make your essay even better.

  • Firstly, since the topic you are working on is "Direct lobbying", it would be better to start the essay/Wikipedia article with a brief summary of direct lobbying. Right now, the first couple of sentences explains what lobbying is about. If you can start it with direct lobbying, it'll sound much better. A very brief explanation of lobbying can come after the summary of direct lobbying. If you can work it in such a way that it fits into the summary, it's even better. Also, this sentence: "Legislature is the assembly..." might not be needed since you've wiki-linked the word "legislature". Anyone wanting more info about legislature should click on the link.
  • Secondly, you might want to include in more info about the sources you used. Right now, it is good that it includes the link, title, publisher and date assessed. It'll be even better if you can use the cite web template. After you have filled in the relevant parameters in the template and saved the page, your reference would be automatically formatted, italics and all. It's convenient that way. Here's an example of a citeweb template in work.

Hope my comments helped and please do not hesitate to get back to me if you have any questions. =)

Sorry for the late reply, it's quite easy to get wrapped up in assignments. I am posting our current posting to the Direct Lobbying main page. Which is exciting! My group is meeting with Prof Obar today for a lab, so we should come out with more improvements. I did like your suggestion about adding more information for the citations, which I will go back and do once we have all the information and details set! Chlopeck (talk) 15:04, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply! Before you move Direct Lobbying to main space, please let me know so that I can take a look at it to make sure everything is in order and that it is in lined with Wikipedia article guidelines. :)
Per our manual of style, headers in the article should not have all the first alphabets of the words capitalized unless it is an abbreviation or name. For example, Court Cases should be Court cases, Lobbying Laws should be Lobbying laws, and etc.
Bejinhan talks 06:10, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We moved it into the Direct lobbying page already upon Prof Obars request. We changed it a little bit and made some additions after our meeting with him yesterday. Let me know what you think. Chlopeck (talk) 14:19, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • The introductory paragraph of a Wikipedia article is called a lead section. It serves to briefly describe what the article subject is and summarizes the important points found in the body of the article. It will be better if you could use aspects found in the body of the article for your lead paragraph. For an example of a lead section of an article which achieved good article status, check out The Deep End (TV series). You will see that everything mentioned in the lead section (the first 2 paragraphs) can be found later in the article.
  • There are 3 empty sections in the article. It'll be better to remove the section headers until you have something to put in the sections.
  • It will be good if you can have images in the article. Get pictures that are related to the subject. For example, the signing of the Act or a lobbying firm or important figures in the Act. Get the pictures from Commons. It is possible to get them from other websites but if you want to, you will need the owner's permission. The owner of the picture must send an email to the Foundation stating that they release the picture under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike License. Format your images in the article this way: [[Image:IMAGE NAME.jpg|100px|right|thumb|THE CAPTION]].
  • Citation 7 contains a link that requires login. If you want, you can check Internet Archive or WebCite to see whether they have a free access link. If not, then remove the link from the reference. It is not necessary. Material published on paper like academic journals, journals, magazines, books, newspaper article, etc. do not need links.
  • I edited the section headers so that their second words are not capitalized. This is in-lined with our manual of style.
  • If images can be added in the article and all aspects of the topic covered, Direct lobbying can reach B-class status.
Overall, this is a good start! :) Bejinhan talks 07:27, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review done

Direct lobbying in the United States has been peer reviewed. Check it out. If you can, address all the concerns the reviewer brought up. Place a {{done}} next to each concern you've addressed and completed. That way, you can keep track of which has been done and which hasn't. Also, it'll be good if you can use your watchlist and watchlist the peer review page as I will be leaving my comments in there instead of on your talk page or the article talk page. Let me know if you need any help. Best, Bejinhan talks 14:08, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Survey

Hi Chlopeck!

I have put together a survey for female editors of Wikipedia (and related projects) in order to explore, in greater detail, women's experiences and roles within the Wikimedia movement. It'd be wonderful if you could participate!

It's an independent survey, done by me, as a fellow volunteer Wikimedian. It is not being done on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation. I hope you'll participate!

Just click this link to participate in this survey, via Google!

Any questions or concerns, feel free to email me or stop by my user talk page. Also, feel free to share this any other female Wikimedians you may know. It is in English, but any language Wikimedia participants are encouraged to participate. I appreciate your contributions - to the survey and to Wikipedia! Thank you! AfD on a student's page

A heads up, in case you didn't notice it: see User_talk:Caseydud#Politics_and_pop_culture_in_the_US. I'll help if the student responds but I thought you'd want to know. I'll drop a note to the other CA and to the instructor too. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 00:43, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a couple of introductory sentences to the article, which seems to have had the effect of shifting the AfD from "delete" to "userfy"; I suspect that if I deleted everything the students put in and just left my two sentences as a stub, the consensus would shift to keep. If this weren't a student page I'd do that as the natural way for the article to evolve; I hesitate a little here because it's a student article, but I think it might be the best thing to do. Any thoughts on whether that's the right approach? I'll leave a similar note for the other Campus Ambassador. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:28, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I added a sandbox on the userpage of one of the students. Casey I believe. With bullet points of what to do. They need to revert and continue to work in the sandbox, rather than the real page and add some bulk.
