Revenge is an American television drama series that airs on ABC starring Madeleine Stowe and Emily VanCamp. It debuted on September 21, 2011, and airs on Wednesday nights at 10:00 pm Eastern/9:00 pm Central.[1][2] The pilot was screened early on ABC's website during a promotional tie-in with Amazon Kindle.[3]

The series was picked up for a full season by ABC after garnering a high 3.3 Nielsen rating in the all-important 18-49 age advertising demographics for its pilot episode and regularly winning its timeslot against every other television network (CBS, Fox, The CW, and NBC) in 18-34 demos.[4][5][6] Madeleine Stowe was nominated for the 2012 Golden Globe Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a TV Drama, while the series was nominated for Favorite New TV Drama at the 2012 People's Choice Awards. The series currently airs in 39 countries worldwide. Revenge has become ABC’s highest-rated series in Wednesday’s 10 p.m. timeslot since Lost's 2006–2007 season and has become the only new series in more than four years to replicate the 18–49 demo ratings success that Lost had in its timeslot since leaving the air.[7][8]

On May 10, 2012, ABC renewed the series for a second season. Starting Fall 2012, the series will air Sundays at 9 p.m. replacing the highly coveted timeslot previously occupied by Desperate Housewives.[9][10]

Overview

Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) comes to the Hamptons for the summer, renting a home next to the Grayson family to enjoy a bright summer. However, it is revealed that Emily has been to the Hamptons before as a little girl. In reality, Emily is Amanda Clarke, whose father was framed for a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison for life. She was permanently separated from him and never saw him again. Now, she's returned to the Hamptons, intent on getting revenge against those who wronged her and her father, the top of that list being Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe), matriarch of the Grayson family and the woman whom her father loved and who, in the end, betrayed him.

As she sets her plan in motion, Emily tries to navigate the upper society to destroy those who betrayed her father. But the further she goes, the more her emotions get involved and the more she questions her motives and the moves she makes.

Initially Emily is reluctant to trust him, but over time Nolan's involvement in Emily's revenge activities deepens, and the two develop a brother-sister relationship. While Nolan is entirely supportive of Emily's vengeful intentions, he frequently steps in and offers advice when he believes she is taking things too far. For the most part, Nolan helps Emily whenever asks for it, especially when the request includes sending anonymous emails or hacking someone's computer/cell phone. He also uses a small camera concealed in a statue of a seal. The one moment of weakness Nolan ever showed was when he became involved in a relationship with bisexual grifter Tyler. He recorded a sexual encounter between the two of them and threatened to expose Tyler if he should get too out of control. After Tyler's psychotic break, Nolan was tied to a chair and held hostage in his own home. Since then, his loyalty to Emily has greatly increased, allowing nothing to distract him anymore. He is later abducted by "the man with white hair" after he bugs his house.
  • Christa B. Allen as Charlotte Grayson,[1] Victoria Grayson and David Clarke's teenage daughter (named after Clarke's aunt), younger half-sister of Daniel and Amanda Clarke, and ex-girlfriend of Declan Porter. Charlotte, is a wealthy fun-loving socialite, but she is unlike the rest of the Grayson clan. Charlotte has a good moral compass and also doesn't have the rest of her family's scheming ways. Like Emily, Charlotte is intelligent - she defies expectations in school with her perfect academic record. She sees Emily as a sisterly figure in her life, sometimes releasing her worries onto Emily. Ironically, Charlotte sometimes unwittingly helps Emily with her revenge activities. Charlotte briefly dated Declan, but this came to an end when Declan lied on the stand against Daniel at his murder trial (unaware this was Declan only trying to protect his brother). Charlotte endured a lifetime of emotional distance and subtle coldness from Victoria. When the truth of her paternity was revealed, Charlotte was completely devastated, believing the reason Victoria is so distant to her is because of her resemblance to Clarke, who she only knows as a mass murderer. Charlotte is the only Grayson that doesn't know the truth about Clarke. Her family's betrayal and Daniel's imprisonment leads to a drug problem that is slowly worsening with time. Victoria, slowly reforming after seeing her daughter in so much pain ( also the fact that Daniel has chosen his fathers side), begins telling Charlotte what Clarke was like. Victoria also says Charlotte has striking features of Clarke, such as her eyes and her laugh, which Victoria claims makes her love Charlotte all the more. Charlotte is currently researching her father's past. The more research Charlotte does, the more she believes Clarke isn't the monster everyone claims he was. Emily suspects she may soon discover the truth as well.
  • Henry Czerny as Conrad Grayson, Victoria's husband, biological father of Daniel Grayson, and legal father of Charlotte. He is the current CEO of Grayson Global, as well as David Clarke's former boss. He was involved in an affair with Victoria's former best friend, Lydia Davis.[1] Conrad is the true man responsible for the infamous plane crash that David Clarke was convicted for funding terrorists into committing (after working with Frank and an unwilling Victoria to frame Clarke). Emily's ultimate objective in infiltrating the Grayson family is to access Conrad's files, where proof of Clarke's innocence remains, and expose all of Conrad's actions. Conrad has gone to every level to protect himself and his family; to the point it is implied Conrad had an unknown white-haired associate to kill Clarke in a prison riot - all of these efforts were undone when Victoria exposed Conrad and the conspiracy to the SEC; Conrad now prepares for the end of all he has.
  • Ashley Madekwe as Ashley Davenport,[1] Emily's (apparent) best friend and loyal, yet ambitious, employee of the Grayson family. She is Tyler Barrol's ex-girlfriend; their relationship ending when he had a psychological breakout and her discovery of his sexual liaisons with Nolan. Initially working as Victoria's party planner and assitant, Ashley became the Grayson family spokesperson during Daniel's murder trial - her ambitions to make a career for herself during the incident leading her to leaking images of him, covered in blood after the incident, online. After Daniel's exoneration, Ashley was employed by Conrad to work at Grayson Global. And she also becomes Emily and Daniel's wedding planner, but her friendship with Emily is tested as she continues to divert Ashley, and with Ashley's dicovery for Emily and Jack's kiss after his dog Sammy died.
  • Nick Wechsler as Jack Porter, Declan Porter's brother and legal guardian (following their father's sudden death), Emily's childhood friend, who becomes the boyfriend of the real Emily Thorne (turned Amanda Clarke). Jack is one of the two men Emily has feelings for (the other being Daniel), and Jack holds feelings for Emily in return. It is earlier implied in the series that Jack murdered Daniel on the beach during Emily and Daniel's engagement party - it was later revealed Tyler was the victim, and the killer was Satoshi Takeda (though Jack believes it was Amanda; having found her over Tyler's body when he went to find her on the beach).[1] Nicholas Stargel plays young Jack Porter.
  • Josh Bowman as Daniel Grayson, Victoria and Conrad's son, older half-brother of Charlotte, Daniel is one of the two men Emily has feelings for (the other being Jack), and Daniel quickly falls deeply in love with, and later in the series becomes engaged to Emily. Daniel is a student at Harvard, and later business partner of Conrad. Daniel is a wild party boy, though subtlely resisting his family's efforts to groom him as the next CEO of Grayson Global. Despite being Victoria's favorite child, he does not have free rein - his earlier reputation as a rambunctious partyboy, and several brushes with the law, have left him on thin ice with his father, though with time they mend their relationship. It is earlier implied in the series that Jack murdered Daniel on the beach during Emily and Daniel's engagement party - it was later revealed Tyler, Daniel's best friend, was the victim, and the killer was Satoshi Takeda; who left Daniel on the scene to take the blame (so that Emily can focus on her plan of revenge). Daniel was charged and put on trial, but he was later exonerated after Lee Moran's controversial "suicide confession" cleared him.[1] After Conrad told Daniel the real story of David Clarke, Daniel chose to stand by his father, rather than expose the truth, and take over the company. This has made Emily claim that if Daniel gets in her way, she wont hold back.
  • Connor Paolo as Declan Porter, Jack Porter's younger brother and Charlotte Grayson's ex-boyfriend. Declan constantly enforces Jack to go after Emily Thorne, and he denies of Amanda Clarke. Nolan and him have created a tight bond, as Nolan has protected him and paid for his tuition at Collins Prep. He falls in love with Charlotte Grayson and during the engagement party him and Charlotte witnesses a grey-hooded man on the beach, which turns out to be Jack. And when the prosecution subpoenas Declan to the trial of Tyler Barrol, Charlotte tries to seduce him to protect Daniel and betray Jack. But in the end, Declan betrays Charlotte to protect Jack, and reveals that she was on painkillers and champagne the night of the murder of Tyler Barrol. [1]

Recurring cast

  • James Tupper as David H. Clarke, Amanda and Charlotte's now-deceased father, who was having an affair with Victoria. Clarke was a kind and generous man, a successful Grayson Global hedge fund executive, and devoted father to Amanda; who was framed by Conrad, Frank and (reluctantly) Victoria, as well as other apparent friends and colleagues he trusted (through bribery or blackmail), as being responsible for funding an infamous terrorist attack - leading to his arrest and imprisonment for life on charges as a terrorist conspriator and mass-murderer. He is later mentioned to have been stabbed and killed during a prison riot by an unidentified inmate; with it later implied to have been done at Conrad's request, by an unknown white-haired associate of Conrad's, disguised as a U.S. Marshall. Clarke is now remembered by most as the most hated man in America - a viewpoint Emily is determined to change and expose the truth regarding the conspiracy to frame him. He only appears in flashbacks.
  • Margarita Levieva as Amanda Clarke/Emily Thorne.[11] Born Emily Thorne, she was befriended by Amanda Clarke in juvenile detention and agreed to switch identities with her. She also uses the name Kara Wilkins (Emily/Amanda's mother's name) but reverts to the Amanda persona when seducing Jack Porter. She is last seen being driven away from the beach by Satoshi Takeda, to an unknown fate.
  • Amber Valletta as Lydia Davis, Victoria's former best friend, Conrad's mistress, as well as David Clarke's former secretary; Emily's first target for revenge - she was bribed by Conrad with $10 million to lie on the stand against Clarke at his trial. After exposing Lydia's affair with Conrad, permanently ending her friendship with Victoria, Emily makes it look like Lydia is responsible for ruining the lives of her other initial targets - Bill Harmon, former Senator Tom Kingsley and Dr. Michelle Banks; leading Frank to try to kill her; after a brawl, Lydia ends up falling from her balcony, and spends some time recovering in Victoria's home. She was moved into Conrad's Manhatten apartment, where they continue their affair later on in the season.
  • Ashton Holmes as Tyler Barrol, Daniel's supposed best friend and college roommate from Harvard, who comes to the Hamptons to gain a position with Grayson Global alongside Daniel. He attempts to network with the business elite in the Hamptons. Nolan discovers that Tyler is a hustler and has been conning older gay men out of their money. The two share a short romantic liaison before Tyler attempts to rob Nolan. The relationship fails and Tyler briefly dates Ashley Davenport. He encourages Daniel to pick up his old partying habits, especially drinking. It is revealed that Tyler developed feelings for Daniel during their time at Harvard. During a drunken night at the Stowaway, Tyler attempted to kiss Daniel. When Daniel rejected his advances, Tyler immediately beat himself up, claiming Daniel did it in order to garner favor with the Graysons. He and Daniel became involved in a competition for a job at Grayson Global. When Daniel proved to be a more successful businessman (with much secret negotiating between Emily and Takeda), he decided to focus his attention on Emily, someone who had consistently been working against him. He found out about Emily's secret plans, kidnapped Amanda and tried to expose them during the engagement party at the end of the summer. When his plans fell apart, he held Daniel at gunpoint, ready to tell him all he knew about Emily. Instead, there was a struggle over the gun. Daniel shot Tyler once in self-defense. Daniel was then knocked by out Satoshi Takeda to prevent him from getting further involved. Takeda then shot Tyler in the back twice, killing him.
  • Max Martini as Frank Stevens, the Graysons' head of security, who worked alongside Conrad to frame David Clarke for funding terrorists and then coercing Victoria into backing their version of events. Frank had romantic feelings for Victoria and ultimately these, combined with his loss of Conrad's trust, results in Conrad firing Frank. Frank attempted to expose Emily to regain favor with the Graysons, but before he can reveal his discoveries, he is murdered by the real Emily Thorne; who smashes his head in with a crow-bar. Emily later set up Tyler for Frank's murder.
  • Jamal Duff as Big Ed, Nolan's bodyguard whom he hired after Frank threatened him.
  • Hiroyuki Sanada as Satoshi Takeda, powerful CEO in Japan and Emily's former mentor in her quest for revenge. Takeda is responsible for killing Tyler and linking Daniel and Jack, both men who Emily has feelings for, to the crime so that Emily can focus on her plan of revenge. After the shooting, Takeda picked up the fleeing Amanda in his car and drove her away from the scene of the crime.
  • William Devane as Edward "Grandpa" Grayson, Chairman of the Board of Grayson Global, formerly founder and original CEO of the company, Conrad's father. He is dedicated to protecting the reputation and status of the empire and his family name.
  • CCH Pounder as Warden Sharon Stiles, Emily's former juvenile detention warden. She is later revealed to be working with Emily.[12]
  • James McCaffrey as Ryan Huntley, Victoria's divorce lawyer in her divorce from Conrad, who aided her in several illegal actions to undermine Conrad's position in the settlement. Ultimately the loss of trust in each-other results in Victoria firing him. He was also David Clarke's defense attorney. Initially appearing as a potential target for Emily, he is later revealed to actually be working with Emily, having believed the whole time Clarke was innocent.[13]
  • Merrin Dungey as Barbara Snow, Conrad's divorce lawyer in his divorce from Victoria.
  • Derek Ray as Lee Moran, a henchman of Victoria's whom she employs to recover Mason Treadwell's tapes from Amanda, and although he manages to recover them, he is forced to assault Jack. Victoria later employs him to stage an attack on Daniel in prison to convince Judge Hawthorne to reconsider bail. Emily later meets up with him at a bar in disguise, records proof of his work for the Graysons, and then brutally attacks him in retaliation for his assaults on Daniel and Jack. Emily later gets Lee arrested with Jack's bloodied sweatshirt in his possession; framing him for Tyler's murder. Conrad finds out Lee plans to expose all he had done for Victoria if he goes down for the crime. Conrad, wanting to protect his wife and save his son, has an unknown white-haired associate kill Lee in prison, staging it to look like he hanged himself, and plant a suicide note that states Lee's confession to killing Tyler - exonerating Daniel.
  • Courtney B. Vance as Benjamin Brooks, a lawyer hired to defend Daniel in the Tyler Barrol murder case.
  • James Purefoy as Dominik Wright, a painter and an old lover of Victoria's. The pair rekindle their relationship during Daniel's trial; although Conrad later blackmails him into leaving Victoria's life again. This would be the tipping point that pushes Victoria into exposing Conrad and the conspiracy to the SEC.
  • Roger Bart as Leo "Mason" Treadwell, a famous author who interviewed Emily as a young girl and was paid off by the Graysons to tell lies in his book about David Clarke. After Treadwell resurfaces, Emily breaks into his home, steals his interview tapes with David Clarke and herself, and then sets the house on fire. During Daniel's trial, Mason returns to write a blog where Emily manipulates him into reporting that Amanda killed Tyler, and Charlotte's statement of Jack being on the beach was false, leading to the end of Charlotte's relationship with Declan.
  • Veronica Cartwright as Judge Elizabeth Hawthorne, the judge presiding over the Tyler Barrol murder case. Hawthorne denies Daniel bail until he is attacked in prison. After Lee's "suicide"; Hawthorne drops all charges against Daniel - exonerating him.
  • Tess Harper as Carole Lyn Miller, a former secretary at Grayson Global and Nolan's aunt. Miller investigated Grayson Global for proof that David Clarke was set up, but before they could inform him of their findings, he was killed by an unknown white-haired associate of Conrad Grayson's. Following this, Nolan faked her death. Emily learns of Miller through a journal missing from her Infinity Box, and poses as a Homeland Security agent to speak to her about her role in David's downfall. Miller later confronts Emily about her desire to kill the white-haired man, saying that her father would definitely not approve.
  • James Morrison as "the white-haired man", a white-haired associate of Conrad's responsible for the murders of David Clarke and Lee Moran. His real identity is currently unknown. Emily initially believes her father died in a prison riot at the hands of a random inmate, but later discovers his death was intentional. Carole Miller informs her that this man visited Conrad a year to the day before Flight 197's crash, and then on the morning of April 22, 2002, David's death. Emily becomes determined to track down the white-haired man so that she can kill him. Nolan bugs the man's home only to be choked unconscious by him.
  • Robbie Amell as Adam Connor,[14] Charlotte's unfaithful boyfriend, with whom she ends her relationship because she falls for Declan. Charlotte later re-connects with Adam during Daniel's murder trial, after breaking up with Declan, where Adam also supplies her with drugs, using his doctor father's prescription pad.
  • Cassius Willis as Detective Robert Gunther, a police detective with the Hamptons police who investigates the kidnapping of Dr. Michelle Banks, and the murders of Frank and Tyler; the latter of which he arrests Daniel for.

Development and production

In January 2011, ABC ordered the script to pilot. In March 2011, actress Emily VanCamp was cast as the lead character, and shortly afterwards it was released that Ashley Madekwe was cast in the series.[15] Madeleine Stowe and Henry Czerny joined the cast as well.[16] Max Martini and Robbie Amell joined the cast as Frank Stevens, a private investigator and Adam, a wealthy student who is hoping to attend Yale.[17][18] James Tupper replaced Marc Blucas in the role of Emily's father, after Blucas was forced to drop out due to his commitment on Necessary Roughness. Recurring Gossip Girl star Connor Paolo was cast as a series regular playing the character of Declan Porter.[19] Former Nikita star Ashton Holmes landed a recurring role as Tyler Barrol, a Harvard classmate of Daniel Grayson.[20]

On May 13, 2011, ABC picked the project up to series.[21] On May 17, 2011, ABC announced that the series would air on Wednesday nights at 10:00 pm Eastern/9:00 pm Central, beginning in the 2011 fall season.[1]

Reception

Critical reception

The show has been met with generally favorable reviews, with a collective score of 8.2/10 from 17,531 users on the Internet Movie Database[22] and 66/100 from 20 media reviews on Metacritic.[23]

Dorothy Rabinowitz of The Wall Street Journal praised the series, writing that "The arrival of one pure and unadulterated drama about a passion as old as man is something to celebrate. That's particularly true when that drama is as spellbinding in its satisfyingly gaudy way, as Revenge turns out to be", whilst awarding particular praise to Van Camp for a "beguiling and entirely chilling study in revenge lust."[24] Writing for The New York Times, Alessandra Stanley compared the series favorably with Gossip Girl, concluding that it has "just enough campy suspense to be enjoyable."[25] Episode 5 of the series received particular acclaim, with C. Orlando of TV Fanatic writing that "Revenge took things to a whole new level this week", and noting with reference to the set-up of David Clarke that "Victoria seems the only one with a conscience".[26]

BuddyTV ranked Revenge #3 on its list of 2011's best new TV shows.[27] Yahoo! TV also mentioned the series among the top television programs of 2011.[28]

The series made the covers of Parade, Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide, and was featured in Rolling Stone,[29] Vanity Fair, Vogue, People, Us Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, and Teen Vogue magazines.

On May 10, 2012, a week before network upfront presentations, it was announced that ABC has renewed Revenge for a second season. The Hollywood Reporter also reported that it was one of the first series to get a "stamp of approval" from ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee, who called the show "sexy" and "sticky," telling critics in January, "You just want more of it."[10]

Ratings

The pilot episode scored a 3.3 Nielsen rating in the 18-49 age demographic and 10.02 million viewers, winning the 10 pm hour time slot against CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.[30] It was reported that Revenge is the highest rated television series in the hour for ABC since Lost. On October 22, 2011, it was reported that Revenge regularly won its hour in the 18-34 and 18-49 age demographics ahead of CSI and Law & Order: SVU.[31]

After a nearly two month hiatus since February 29, 2012, Revenge returned on April 18, 2012 at No. 1 in the Nielsen ratings and won its timeslot against every other television network with a first-place finish among Total Viewers, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54. Revenge won over an original episode of NBC's Law & Order: SVU in Total Viewers (+33%), Adults 18-49 (+53%) and Adults 25-54 (+45%) and generated big year-to-year time-period gains in Total Viewers (+81%), Adults 18-49 (+35%) and Adults 25-54 (+38%), rising over first-run programming on the same night last year. The April 18, 2012 episode attracted ABC’s largest audience to the hour since the middle of February sweeps on February 15, 2012.[32][33]

On April 25, 2012, Revenge won its timeslot for the second consecutive week when the episode rated at No. 1 in the Nielsen ratings among Total Viewers, Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, and Adults 25-54.[34][35]

Revenge is ABC’s highest-rated series overall in Wednesday’s 10 p.m. hour in more than 4 years since Lost during the 2006-07 television season.[7]

Awards

Revenge was nominated for Favorite New TV Drama at the 2012 People's Choice Awards.[39] Madeleine Stowe received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a TV drama.[40]
