Pokémon X and Y (ポケットモンスター X&Y, Poketto Monsutā Ekkusu & Wai) are role-playing games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. They are the very first installments in the sixth generation of the main series of Pokémon games, and the very first in the handheld main series of games to be featured with polygonal 3D graphics. The two games will be released worldwide in October 2013.

Overview

Like the many games before it, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y see players in the role of a Pokémon Trainer who travels across one of the various regions of the setting, catching creatures known as Pokémon and using them to battle against other trainers. For the first time in the series, the entire game, including environments, character models, and battle sequences, are presented in fully polygonal 3D graphics. Along with various Pokémon from previous generations, X and Y will introduce many new species of Pokémon, which include the three new starter Pokémon: the rodent-like Grass-type Chespin (Japanese: Harimaron (ハリマロン)), the vulpine Fire-type Fennekin (Japanese: Fokko (フォッコ)), and the frog-like Water-type Froakie (Japanese: Keromatsu (ケロマツ)).[1] The original announcement video also featured the games' two legendary mascots, although they were not named until sometime later: the red airborne Pokémon called Yveltal (イベルタル, Iberutaru) that takes the form of the letter Y while in flight and a blue cervine Pokémon called Xerneas (ゼルネアス, Zeruneasu) with prismatic antlers and eyes that bear the letter X.[2][3][4][5][6] Shortly after the trailer's release, GamesRadar editors noted a resemblance of landmarks in the game to the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles, leading them to believe this edition will be taking place in a region with Parisian or overall French origins.[7]

On February 14, 2013, Nintendo announced on both its official website as well as through the March 2013 issue of CoroCoro Comic a brand new Pokémon in the form of Sylveon (Japanese: Nymphia (ニンフィア, Ninfia)), a new evolutionary form of Eevee with an as yet unknown type and means of acquisition in the new games.[8][9][10] On the March 31, 2013, episode of Pokémon Smash!, games director Junichi Masuda announced that the next week's episode would feature the introduction of yet another new Pokémon.[11] Upon the episode's broadcast, it was shown in game footage but its name was not yet revealed; the official websites state that the Pokémon has some relationship to Mewtwo, with the international websites noting its physical resemblance.[12] This Pokémon was later revealed to be a new form of Mewtwo itself. [13]

Development

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y were first shown on January 8, 2013 by Nintendo in a Nintendo Direct 2013, along with the first gameplay footage. They will be the first games in the main series for the Nintendo 3DS and the first to be presented with full 3D graphics. Nintendo has announced plans to release the game for worldwide (the first in the series to release everywhere at the same time) in October 2013.[2][3]
