PK (acronym for "Peekay")[3] is a 2014 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Rajkumar Hirani, produced by Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Siddharth Roy Kapur, and written by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi.[4][5] The film stars Aamir Khan in the title role, with Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla, and Sanjay Dutt in supporting roles. Aamir Khan’s character as PK is inspired from a real life character Abraham Kovoor.[6] Hirani has stated that the film will be a satire on "God and godmen".[7] PK was released on 19 December, 2014.

Plot

An alien (Aamir Khan) lands on Earth on a research mission, but is stranded in Rajasthan when his spaceship's remote control is stolen. He learns to fit in among humans by wearing clothes and using money that he steals from couples having sex in cars with open windows. He attempts to learn to communicate by grabbing the villagers' hands and absorbing their memories through touch, but they chase him away when he tries. Bhairon Singh (Sanjay Dutt) believes the alien is a person suffering amnesia and befriends him. He interprets the alien's hand-grabbing as sexual interest and takes him to a brothel. There, the alien holds a prostitute's hand for several hours and thus learns the language.

The alien travels to Delhi in search of his stolen remote. Due to his strange behaviour, the people in the city assume he is tipsy and call him PK. Delhi turns out to be a very large city, and people tell him that only God can help him find his remote. PK tries to find God, but is confused by India's various religions and their confusing traditions. He later discovers that a godman, Tapasvi Maharaj (Saurabh Shukla), has his remote. However, Tapasvi falsely claims to have attained the object from God in the Himalayas and refuses to return it to PK. Bewildered, PK concludes that Tapasvi and other religious heads must be calling a "wrong number" to God and, as a result, spreading misunderstandings and meaningless rituals.

Meanwhile in Bruges, television reporter Jaggu (Anushka Sharma) falls in love with a man named Sarfaraz (Sushant Singh Rajput). Jaggu's father (Parikshit Sahni) objects to their relationship because Sarfaraz is a Muslim from Pakistan; he consults Tapasvi who predicts that Sarfaraz will betray Jaggu. Determined to prove them wrong, Jaggu proposes to Sarfaraz. She is heart-broken at the wedding chapel when she receives a letter calling off the marriage due to their differences. She returns to India where she is intrigued while watching PK distributing leaflets about a missing God. After hearing his story, Jaggu devises a plan to expose Tapasvi and recover PK's remote.

Jaggu encourages thousands of people to send in videos of their own experiences with religious heads calling "wrong numbers". Finally, Tapasvi is forced to come into the studio and confront PK on-air. Tapasvi claims he has a direct connection to God and refers to his prediction of Sarfaraz's betrayal as proof. However, PK absorbs Jaggu's memories and discovers that Sarfaraz did not write the letter she received. Jaggu contacts the Pakistan Embassy in Belgium where Sarfaraz worked; the embassy tells her that Sarfaraz still loves her and calls them daily to inquire whether she has called. Jaggu and Sarfaraz reconnect and Tapasvi, exposed as a fraud, returns PK's device.

In the course of the film, PK falls in love with Jaggu but refrains from telling her because she loves Sarfaraz. He instead records tapes of her voice and fills his suitcases with batteries so that he can listen to them on his home planet. While departing, he lies to Jaggu regarding the content of the tapes; Jaggu, despite knowing the truth, keeps quiet. She later publishes a book about PK and, at a book reading, claims that she misses him deeply.

The film ends with PK returning to Earth a year later on a new research mission with another alien (Ranbir Kapoor).

Production

Casting

Hirani cast Sushant Singh Rajput after director Abhishek Kapoor showed him Rajput's rushes.[8][9] Aamir Khan, Ram Sethi and Anushka Sharma were all confirmed to be performing in the film, with Khan stated to be portraying lead character of PK.[10][11]

Filming

The co-director Khan began looking for shooting locations in July 2012.[12] Second unit filming was set to begin in late 2012,[13] which was stalled after the rumoured departure of three department heads for the film and bad weather stalling initial shoots.[14][15] Hirani denied rumours that the film would be delayed, stating that principal filming had always been intended to begin in mid-January 2013 in Delhi and Rajasthan to "capture the winter of Delhi".[16][17] Shooting officially began on 1 February 2013,[18] with the filming scheduled to occur over a 45-day period.[19] A 26-day schedule of shooting of PK started in Delhi from 27 September 2013.[20][21][22] When the shoot of the film was going on in Chandni Chowk area of Delhi, an FIR was lodged against makers of the film for allegedly hurting religious sentiments in October 2013. The objection was regarding a scene in the film where a man dressed as the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva pulls the rickshaw with two burqa clad women as passengers.[23]

The movie released on 19 December 2014.

Marketing, promotion and plea to ban the film

The first poster came out on 31 July 2014.A motion poster was also released on the same day on YouTube. The poster sparked a controversy{vague}} as it featured Aamir Khan posing almost nude with only a transistor covering his private parts.[24][25] Although the Central Board of Film Certification had already cleared the film, a PIL was filed in the court by the All India Human Rights and Social Justice Front to ban its release saying it promoted nudity and vulgarity. The Supreme Court dismissed the plea and gave the movie a green signal.[26][27]

There were also allegations on the poster being copied. It had similarities with the poster of a Portuguese musician named Quim Barreiros, which was released in 1973.[28] The second poster of was launched on 20 August 2014 at an event in Mumbai.[29][30] This poster was also released in the form of motion poster on YouTube. The new poster featured Aamir Khan wearing traditional Rajasthani attire, also sporting dark glasses and holding onto a brass tenor. The promotional strategy for the movie was revealed by the makers at the launch of the second poster.

The third motion poster introduced Sanjay Dutt as Bhairav Singh. The fourth motion poster Anushka Sharma along with Aamir Khan released on YouTube 16 oct 2014. The poster introduced Anushka Sharma as Jagat Janani[31] Aamir Khan stated that PK will have a poster campaign in which a new poster will be introduced every two to three weeks. By the time the movie releases, 8 to 10 posters will be launched.[32][33] The teaser released on 23 October.[34]

Distribution

Koimoi reports rumors of a satellite deal in which the satellite rights were sold for ₹85 crore (US$10 million) if the domestic business reaches ₹ 300 crores domestic nett.[35][36] The music rights were sold for ₹15 crore (US$1.8 million).[37]

The film's soundtrack is composerd by Shantanu Moitra, Ajay-Atul and Ankit Tiwari with lyrics are penned by Swanand Kirkire, Amitabh Varma and Manoj Muntashir. The full soundtrack released on 17 November 2014.

The song "Tharki Chokro" was the first single track released on 8 November 2014, the song is picturised on Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt[40] which was sung by Swaroop Khan and composed by Ajay-Atul with lyrics are penned by Swanand Kirkire.[41]

The second single track "Love is a waste of time" featuring Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma released on 13 November 2014 on YouTube.[42][43] The song is sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal, composed by Shantanu Moitra with the lyrics of Amitabh Varma.[44] "Chaar Kadam" song released on 22 November 2014 on T-Series YouTube Page.[45] The song is sung by Shaan and Shreya Ghoshal, composed by Shantanu Moitra and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire.

Critical reception and other impact

Bollywood Hungama described the film "a solid entertainer that will surely entertain the masses and classes alike" and gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars.[46] Subhash K. Jha gave 4 out of 5 stars saying, "'PK' is a film designed to warm the cockles of the heart.".[47] Raja Sen of Rediff called PK "a triumph" and argued that Aamir "soars high".[48] He gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars. However, Sukanya Verma of the same publication called the film "a mixed bag of spunk and sentimentality", while still giving it 3.5 out of 5 stars.[49] Rohit Vats of Hindustan Times gave the film 4 out of 5 stars and said "Aamir Khan steals the show with his performance".[50]

PIL filed against PK including actor, director for Anti Hindu dialogue used in the film. Stating that "The producer, the director and entire star cast of the movie have made fun of the Hindu religion by misusing the freedom of expression."[51][52][53]

Box office

Domestic

The film collected ₹26.63 crore (US$3.2 million) on its opening day on Friday,[2] ₹30.34 crore (US$3.6 million) on Saturday,[2] ₹38.44 crore (US$4.6 million) on Sunday,[2] ₹21.22 crore (US$2.5 million) on Monday,[2] ₹18.85 crore (US$2.3 million) on Tuesday,[2] and ₹19.55 crore (US$2.3 million) on Wednesday.[2]

International

The film opened in 22 international markets during its opening weekend and grossed $28.7 million placing at #3 at the worldwide box office behind The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and Gone with the Bullets.[54]

In North America, the film set an opening weekend record with $3.75 million (previously held by Dhoom 3) placing at #10 at the box office.[54]
