Pixels is a 2015 American "science fiction" "comedy" "film" produced by Columbia Pictures, 1492 Pictures and Happy Madison Productions. The film was directed by Chris Columbus, based on a screenplay written by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling and a screen story penned by Tim Herlihy, based on French director Patrick Jean's 2010 short film of the same name.[4] The film stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan, Brian Cox, Ashley Benson, and Jane Krakowski. The film's plot has extraterrestrials misinterpreting video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, and invade Earth using technology inspired by games such as Pac-Man and Space Invaders. To counter the alien assault, the United States hire former arcade champions to lead the planet's defense.

Principal photography on the film began on June 2, 2014 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on July 24, 2015. Pixels has grossed over $49 million and was panned by critics.

Plot

In the summer of 1982, the young Sam Brenner and Will Cooper play in the arcade, and Brenner's excellence leads him to enter an arcade game world championships. At the event, the MC tells everyone that a time capsule will be launched into space containing elements of the present culture. Brenner and Cooper meet Ludlow Lamonsoff, a weird but brilliant kid who's in love with Lady Lisa (the main character of the game Dojo Quest). After Brenner gets through every game, he faces hotshot gamer Eddie Plant in Donkey Kong. Eddie mentions the pattern to the game, causing Brenner to lose focus and come in second place.

Come 2015, Brenner works for a company that installs software. Cooper is the President of the United States and he is frequently mocked in the media, most recently for failing to read properly during a kindergarten class and yelling at a little girl. In Guam, a military base picks up a threatening signal. Alien life forms based off the designs of Galaga attack. The soldiers try to fight back, but are easily taken out. One soldier gets taken by the aliens.

Brenner does his job at the home of Violet Van Patten, a divorcee who lives with her son Matty. While Brenner goes to work, he hears Violet crying in the closet. He comforts her by listening to her situation, and they share wine. He thinks they're having a moment, and he goes in for a kiss but gets shut down. He then gets a call from Cooper telling him to be at the White House soon. Brenner heads to the White House with Violet close by. To his surprise, he finds out she is a Lieutenant Colonel. Cooper brings Brenner into the Oval Office to show him the Galaga aliens attacking.

Later, Brenner drives his van home to find Ludlow in there. Ludlow brings Brenner back to his home where he says that the aliens are sending creatures with classic video game designs to attack. Ludlow received a message using manipulated footage of 80's icons like Ronald Reagan and Madonna to explain their plans: since they perceived the items in the time capsule as a declaration of war, they are using the video games as a challenge, giving the people of Earth three rounds to fight back or it's game over for everyone. They also show that the soldier they took was a "trophy". They show the video to Cooper and determine that the next attack will happen in India. Sure enough, the aliens attack the Taj Mahal with Arkanoid paddles and they take an Indian man as a trophy as well.

Brenner and Ludlow are brought in to "train" soldiers to fight back by showing them how to play these games, to which Admiral Porter objects. Violet shows Brenner and Ludlow that the pixels are taken down by strong light beams. Cooper is with his wife Jane at a bakery when his assistant comes in to tell him that the next attack will happen in London.

Everyone heads to London to meet with Corporal Hill. The soldiers brace for attack as the creatures from Centipede attack. Brenner tells the men to shoot for the head and anticipate the pattern, but they have no luck. Brenner and Ludlow take over with permission from Cooper and they blast away at the Centipede. The final boss makes its way into town and nearly devours a boy until Brenner blasts it away for good.

The aliens send a message using the Fantasy Island guys to congratulate Earth on their victory, and give the Duck Hunt dog as a trophy, but remind the Army that the aliens are leading 2-1. It is learned that the next attack will happen in New York City. Needing more help, Ludlow and Cooper agree that they need someone else to help them. Brenner, Cooper, and Violet go to a prison to find Eddie who got busted for adding charges to phone bills. He still taunts Brenner and makes demands in exchange for his help. Among the demands are an island, not paying taxes, and a meeting with Serena Williams and Martha Stewart. Cooper agrees to let him out of prison and the no taxes part.

The team goes to NYC to discover that the next boss is Pac-Man. Violet presents the guys with four cars based off the ghosts in Pac-Man, with the fourth car driven by the game's creator Toru Iwatani. When the team gets downtown where Pac-Man is chomping through everything, Iwatani tries to appeal to Pac-Man's good side by talking to him like a father. Unfortunately, this gets his hand chomped and pixelated. The remaining three chase after Pac-Man. He eats a power pellet giving him ten seconds to be able to eat the ghosts, and he eats Ludlow's car as he jumps out, Eddie hits the first Pac-Man after catching up to him quickly. The second one also gets taken out by Eddie. The third causes him to drive into the water. Brenner chases him near a parking garage where Pac-Man finds another power pellet. Brenner counts down and drives backward through a parking garage. At the last second, the power pellet wears off and gives Brenner a chance to defeat Pac-Man, and they're given Q*bert as a trophy.

The team has a ball held for them as thanks for their heroics. Brenner brings Violet out, while Eddie brings Serena Williams (who only showed up because she was promised an island). After Brenner spends time with Violet, the aliens send another message saying the rules have been violated, and they will launch a full-scale attack momentarily. Matty finds Eddie and sees that his shades that were fished out of the water contain cheat codes, which allowed him to beat Pac-Man and also explains how he beat Brenner in Donkey Kong. Eddie flees and Matty is taken by the aliens as Violet watches. Q*bert tells the heroes that the aliens were peaceful until they felt threatened by the time capsule. They realize they have to go to the ship and stop the aliens.

The aliens bring down more video games upon Washington D.C., including Frogger and Defender. Brenner, Violet, and Q*Bert gear up and are joined by Cooper while Ludlow stays behind to fight. One of the aliens takes the form of Lady Lisa to Ludlow's joy. However, she still fights him until he says he only wants to love her. She drops her swords and they kiss. Eddie comes to fight and apologizes for ditching the team.

Brenner, Violet, Cooper and Q*Bert get brought up to the ship where Brenner faces his biggest challenge, Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong rolls barrels down as the heroes try to reach Matty and the other two captives. Matty tells Brenner that Eddie cheated all those years ago, making him realize he is the true Donkey Kong champ. Brenner takes the hammer and smashes the barrels before hurling it at Donkey Kong destroying him. This causes the rest of the video games to freeze and be brought back up to the ship. Unfortunately for Ludlow, that includes Lady Lisa.

The team is recognized as heroes before the White House. Cooper announces he's made a peace treaty with the aliens. Eddie apologizes to Brenner for cheating, and admits Brenner is the best in the world. Ludlow misses Lisa until Q*bert randomly morphs into her. Brenner and Violet become a couple. Eddie then gets a text from Serena to meet him in the bedroom along with Martha Stewart (who made sandwiches). Eddie sneaks off with excitement. The aliens leave Earth, and Iwatani's hand is restored. One year later, Ludlow has married Lisa and they are the proud parents of five Q*berts.

Cast

Serena Williams and Martha Stewart make cameo appearances as themselves. Dan Patrick, Robert Smigel, and Steve Koren cameo as White House Reporters. The real Toru Iwatani cameos as an Electric Dream Factory repairman.

Production

Development

On May 12, 2010 it was announced that Columbia Pictures and Happy Madison Productions were in talks to develop a 3D animated feature film based on Patrick Jean's video-game themed short film Pixels.[13] On November 10, 2010 Adam Sandler hired Tim Herlihy to write the film for his studio.[14] Herlihy revealed that everyone "hated" his first draft, so he rewrote it after he and Sandler came up with the concept of having Kevin James as the President of the United States.[15] On July 16, 2012 studios tapped Tim Dowling to re-write the film, already written by Herlihy, Seth Gordon was attached to exec-produce and to possibly direct the film.[16] On May 30, 2013, director Chris Columbus was in final talks to adapt the internet short film Pixels for Sony Pictures and Sandler's Happy Madison banner.[4] Characters from classic arcade games such as Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Frogger, and Donkey Kong, among several others, have been licensed for use in the film.[17]

There were originally plans to include a scene where the Great Wall of China is damaged, but the concept was removed from the script in hopes to improve the film's chances of being in the Chinese market.[18]

Casting

On February 26, 2014, it was announced that Adam Sandler would star a lead role in the film, while Kevin James and Josh Gad were in early talks to join the cast of the film.[5] On March 28, Peter Dinklage was also in final talks to join the film and to play fourth and final male lead.[6] Jennifer Aniston was originally considered for the female lead, but declined because of scheduling conflicts.[19] On April 4, Michelle Monaghan joined the film to star as a female lead.[8] James will play as U.S. president who teams up with Sandler's character a former champion, to save the planet. Gad will play a conspiracy-theory-obsessed genius with really bad social skills, Dinklage will be Sandler's brash former video game-playing nemesis and Monaghan will play a weapons developer for the military and love interest for Sandler.[8] On June 11, Brian Cox joined the cast, he'll play military heavyweight Admiral Porter.[9] On July 1, Ashley Benson was added to the cast of the film to play Lady Lisa, a beautiful warrior from the fictional '80s video game Dojo Quest.[10] On July 9, Jane Krakowski joined the cast of the film to play the First Lady to James' President Cooper.[11]

On October 20, during an interview with Film-News.co.uk, actress Michelle Monaghan said, "Yeah I adore Adam. We had the best time filming Pixels for 12 hours a day for three months straight, Adam Sandler, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage and myself, it's a comedy and those guys just know how to roll; their timing is impeccable."[20]

In a May 2015 interview commemorating Pac-Man's 35th anniversary, former Pac-Man champion and leading expert Billy Mitchell, after whom Dinklage's character is modeled, was asked his opinion about Dinklage's performance. While acknowledging that the character was indeed based on him, Mitchell responded that he thought of Dinklage as a "good guy" and somebody he "could look up to", but also added that he got "picked on it a lot", as people would tell him he "got beat up by a little guy, finally".[21]

Filming

On March 25, 2014, Ontario Media Development Corporation confirmed that the film would be shot in Toronto from May 28 to September 9 at Pinewood Toronto Studios.[22][23] While principal photography on the film commenced in Toronto, Ontario on June 2, 2014, using downtown streets decorated to resemble New York City.[24] On July 29, the filming was being taken place outside of Markham, Ontario.[25] Filming was also done in Rouge Park area, extras were dressing in costume at Markham's Rouge Valley Mennonite Church.[25] On August 4, actors Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage and Ashley Benson were spotted in Toronto during the filming scenes for the film on Bay Street, which was transformed into a city block in Washington, D.C. and littered with wrecked vehicles and giant holes in the pavements.[26] The Ontario Government Buildings was doubled to transform into a federal office building in Washington. Actors were aiming at aliens which could not been seen but will be added later with CGI.[26]

On August 26, 2014, filming took place in Cobourg.[27] The filming was completed in three months, with 12 hours of shooting a day.[20]

Music

The musical score for the movie was composed by Henry Jackman, who also worked as composer for Wreck-It Ralph. In June 2015, American rapper Waka Flocka Flame released a single entitled "Game On" featuring Good Charlotte, which will serve as part of the film's soundtrack.[28]

Release

The film was originally scheduled to be released on May 15, 2015,[29][30] but on August 12, 2014, the release date was pushed back to July 24, 2015.[31] In the United States and Canada, it was released in Dolby Vision format in Dolby Cinema, which is the first ever for Sony.[32] It is scheduled to be released in China on mid-September with the exact date yet to be announced.[33]

Marketing

The first trailer was released on March 19, 2015 and received 34.3 million global views in 24 hours, breaking Sony's previous record held by The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (22 million views in 2014).[34] The second trailer was released on June 13, 2015.[35] In Brazil, a promotional video was released on July 2, 2015, showing Adam Sandler interacting with Monica and Jimmy Five (from Monica's Gang) and telling Monica the movie's plot, before both are chased by Pac-Man.[36]

Reception

Box office

As of July 27, 2015, Pixels has grossed $26.9 million in North America and $25.4 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $52.3 million.[3] The film cost $88 million to produce, with an additional $20 million spent on marketing and distribution.[37][38][2]

In the United States and Canada, Pixels opened simultaneously with the teen romance Paper Towns, the sports drama Southpaw and the horror film The Vatican Tapes, across 3,723 theaters.[39] Box office pundits noted that the film's release date caused it to face competition with the first former film and along with the holdovers Ant-Man and Minions, all of which were projected to earn around $20 million.[38][40] However, some analysts suggested the film could open to as high as $30 million and if it failed to hit $30 million, it could have difficulty being profitable unless it earned a significant audience abroad.[2] It made $1.5 million from its Thursday night showings at 2,776 theaters and topped the box office on its opening day earning $9.2 million.[41][42][43] Through its opening weekend it grossed $24 million from 3,723 theaters, debuting at second place at the box office behind Ant-Man.[44]

For its overseas box office performance, the studio used The Lego Movie as a comparison.[45] Outside the U.S. and Canada, Pixels opened in the same weekend as its U.S. premiere in 56 countries — which is about 40% of its total foreign market — and grossed $26 million in its opening weekend from 7,594 screens.[45] It debuted at No. 1 in 23 of the 56 countries and had the biggest opening of all time for Sony in Argentina ($2.3 million) with other notable openings in Mexico ($3.54 million), Brazil ($3.12 million) and Russia and the CIS ($2.5 million).[45] It opened in South Korea on Thursday, July 16, 2015, earning an estimated $3.3 million on its opening weekend, debuting at third place behind Pixar's animated film Inside Out and local film Northern Limit Line.[39][46] It has so far grossed a total of $4.8 million there.[47]

Critical response

Pixels was critically panned. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 18% approval rating, based on 105 reviews, with an average rating of 3.8/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Much like the worst arcade games from the era that inspired it, Pixels has little replay value and is hardly worth a quarter."[48] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 27 out of 100, based on 34 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[49] In CinemaScore polls conducted during its opening weekend, cinema audiences gave the film an average grade of "B" on a A+ to F scale.[43]

Peter Travis of Rolling Stone disdained the film, awarding it just one star out of four, calling it "a 3D metaphor for Hollywood's digital assault on our eyes and brains" and deeming it "relentless and exhausting".[50] Chris Suellentrop of video game-focused blog Kotaku was so displeased with the film that he deliberately spoiled the entire plot to dissuade the blog's readers from seeing the film, saying that he "had more fun retelling the plot to [his] wife, who had never heard of the movie, than [he] did sitting through Pixels."[51]
