Live in San Diego (alternatively known as Live in San Diego with special guest JJ Cale)[1] is the upcoming thirteenth live album by the british rock musician Eric Clapton. Special guests on the release include guitarists J. J. Cale, Robert Cray, Doyle Bramhall II and Derek Trucks.[2] The album which is available on compact disc, as a digital music download and on grammophone record was recorded on March 15, 2007 at the Ipayone Center in San Diego, California and features a total of 16 tracks.[3]

It will be available on September 30, 2016[4] and distributed through Reprise Records.[5]

Background

Concert details

The concert was recorded on March 15, 2007 at the Ipayone Center.

The concert took place during the "Doyle & Derek World Tour" Clapton heldt with Doyle Bramhall II and Derek Trucks from 2006 to 2007 leading up to the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007.[6] Audio and video filming for the release began on March 15, 2007 during the concert at the Ipayone Center in San Diego, California.[7] Before performing with Cale at the venue, Clapton said: "This is the realization of what may have been my last ambition: to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember."[8] Ciritc George Varga from the San Diego Union Tribune reviewed: "Thursday's show was the sole date to feature a cameo by Cale, who has long been one of Clapton's idols. Sitting side-by-side with Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall, Clapton and Cale amiably sang and played together on such Cale-penned gems as 'After Midnight' [and] 'Cocaine'. Clearly delighted, Clapton beamed and grinned throughout Cale's five-song guest spot."[9]

The sell-out concert with 10,911 people in attendance grossed $837,570.[10]

Release information

The album features Clapton's long-time friend J.J. Cale who died in 2013.

The album was announced on August 5, 2016 via Clapton's official website and Facebook report by Clapton's management.[11] A video single of "Anyway the Wind Blows" was released the same day via YouTube.[12] Pre-order sales also started officially on August 5, 2016 with the option of two further tracks immediately made avaiable via digital music download.[13] Special "pre-order bundles" allowing the customer to order limited edition memorabilia like t-shirts were released to promote the album.[14] The album is available as a digital music download and on compact disc as well as 180 gram grammophone record.[15] Altough the entire show was recorded for potential video release on DVD and Blu-ray, Clapton's press representative based in New York City said on August 5, 2016 that there will not be a DVD of the show, but a video footage showing Clapton and Cale performing "Any Way the Wind Blows" at their San Diego show on the internet video platform YouTube.[16]

Clapton previously honored Cale in 2006 with the release of the Platinum-selling studio album The Road to Escondido[17] and recorded The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale, another release which gained positive critical acclaim around the world and success on international album charts, as "Eric Clapton and Friends" with musicians like Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler, Willie Nelson, John Mayer and others for Cale after his death in 2013.[18] The first single from the album entitled "They Call Me the Breeze", released on June 30, 2014 featured footage of the concert for the official music video.[19] Altough major bootleg sources for Clapton's performances like "Geetarz",[20] "Slowhand Bootleg"[21] and "ECIShere"[22] list the audio recording of the performance for sale or download, there are no bootleg video recordings of the performance available.[23] Clapton's official fan club magazine Where's! Eric noted both the bootleg and official recordings for potential future release.[24]

However, a 33-second video and audio recording of "Cocaine" filmed by an audience member, showing Clapton and Cale singing and playing the the song was uploaded to YouTube on March 23, 2007, eight days after the concert took place.[25] On August 6, 2016, Where's! Eric announced that although there is a huge demand for the video of the show being released, a "DVD or Blu-ray of the concert is not forthcoming".[26] Further publications speculated that there will not be a concert film as "Clapton may not have fully recovered from the death of his long-time friend J.J. Cale".[27] However, this has not been officially denied or confirmed as Clapton was on holiday in Iceland during the release.[28]

Composition

The album belongs to the musical genres of pop rock,[29] blues rock[30] and rock music.[31]
