Controversy and criticism
The decision of The Voice producers to have the Live Playoff performances voted on in real time, exclusively through Twitter and The Voice app, left viewers who were not on the East Coast at a disadvantage.
Mark Franklin of Idolchatter/Voiceviews commented, "The Voice kicked off its live shows Monday night with a format more deserving of a Razzie than an Emmy. As contestants sang their hearts out in hopes of landing a spot in the Season 12 finals, their fate was being decided by live voting that began before all the performances were completed. And in one of the show's silliest moves ever, viewers in the Mountain and West Coast times zones were being urged on Twitter to vote while the performances were occurring in the East Coast. In other words, they were being encouraged to vote without seeing a single performance. By the time the West Coast feed of the show aired, voting was already completed; the results had already been announced back East. West Coast viewers were understandably not amused and took to Twitter to voice their disgust over The Voice's live playoff format...It would serve The Voice right if every fan on the West Coast found something else to watch on Monday and Tuesday nights for the rest of the spring. Problem is, it's not only the viewers who get cheated by this process. How about the contestants who have most of their fan base on the West Coast? And if The Voice is really about finding the best voice, what sense does it make to have voting start before everyone has performed? Or to encourage half the nation to vote without seeing a single performance? At that point you're not hosting a singing competition, Carson Daly. You're hosting a popularity contest."[22]
Furthermore, Lyndsey Parker of Yahoo Music stated, "The Voice Season 12 finally went live this Monday with the top 24 Playoffs, but when it came to the voting, it was really only 'live' for the East Coast. After six contestants each — five regular semifinalists, plus one returning 'Coach Comeback' pick — from Team Blake and Team Alicia competed, viewers voted in real time for two contestants per team to move on to next week’s top 12. (Blake Shelton and Alicia Keys then each selected a third team member to also advance.) Factor in the twist that voting was conducted via Twitter and the show's official app — meaning mainly technically savvy (read: younger, wealthier) East Coasters likely participated — and you have to wonder if the six contestants that made it through truly represented the, um, voice of the people."[23]
