The United Future Party (Korean: 미래통합당, lit. Future Unionist Party) is a conservative, right-wing political party in South Korea.

The party was formed on 17 February 2020 by the merger of the 3 right-wing parties — Liberty Korea Party, New Conservative Party and Onward for Future 4.0, as well as including several minor parties and political organisations.[1] By the time of establishment, it contains 113 MPs in the National Assembly.[1] It has a sister relationship with the minor Future Korea Party.

History

Background

The political scandal in 2016 led the President Park Geun-hye to be impeached, as well as letting several MPs to quit from the then-ruling Saenuri Party to form the Bareun Party.[2] The Saenuri Party was forced to change its name to the Liberty Korea Party (LKP)[3] but following the final impeachment of Park on 10 March 2017, it de jure lost its ruling party position.[4] After the Democratic presidential candidate Moon Jae-in was elected on 9 May,[5] it officially became the main opposition.

Though several Bareun MPs returned to the LKP, the LKP didn't recover its supports, in which letting the conservative party to lose at the 2018 local elections.[6] Its President, Hong Jun-pyo, immediately resigned in order to take responsibilities of the serious defeat.[6] Also, the Bareun Party, who merged itself with the minor centrist People's Party and founded the new Bareunmirae Party, also faced a defeat at the local elections.[7]

Both conservative parties then held the snap leadership elections. On 2 September 2018, the Bareunmirae Party elected Sohn Hak-kyu as its new President.[8] On 27 February 2019, the Liberty Korea Party elected the former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn as its new President.[9] Soon, Lee Un-ju, a Bareunmirae MP, quitted from her party[10] and widely expected to join the LKP,[11] but formed a new party named Onward for Future 4.0.[12] Another former Bareun MPs, faced conflicts with its President Sohn and founded the New Conservative Party.[13] As a "conservative union", 3 of these parties agreed to be merged and establish a new party.[14]

Originally, the name was temporarily set as the New Grand United Party (Korean: 대통합신당),[15] but soon changed to the current name.[16] Park Hyung-joon, who led the merger and refoundation, explained that the name includes the meaning of pro-youths, as well as political solidarity.[17]

Founding congress

On 17 February 2020, 3 conservative parties were finally merged and refounded as the United Future Party.[1] It soon elected the Liberty Korea president Hwang Kyo-ahn as the new President.[18] Though many of the new party leadership is almost similar to the LKP, it contains several Vice Presidents who are not from the LKP i.e. Won Hee-ryong and Kim Young-hwan.[18]

The President of the Republic Moon Jae-in and the Democratic President Lee Hae-chan congratulated the new party's founding, but soon was reported that it was not welcomed by several members.[19] Some sources also reported that the party is planning to file a lawsuit against Moon.[20][21][22]

Yoo Seong-min, the former Bareunmirae president, did not attend to the founding congress.[23] Yoo Young-ha, a pro-Park Geun-hye figure, was reported that he exited from the LKP before the formation of this party.[24]
