== List of animals who kill the most humans each year wikipage ==

Someone put that the numbers exclude other causes of death, such as “abortions.” This is topic that becomes convoluted and messy. When does a fertilized egg become considered a living human, which can then be considered a life capable of killing. You see how messy it gets? Just remove that part. It’s unnecessary.

    wp:Userpage is a nice read Blaze The Wolf :D -GoatLordServant (Talk) 14:12, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thank yoU! I would look at these articles first if I knew they existed which I clearly dont Blaze The Wolf (talk) 14:13, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's ok, we've all started somewhere. It was a good decision bringing a question here, if you have more, contributors will answer. -GoatLordServant (Talk) 14:15, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
A general tip, Blaze The Wolf: if you've got a question about something in Wikipedia itself (about how it's organised, or how to work in it) it's often helpful to try searching for that word or phrase with "WP:" (in full, "Wikipedia:") on the front. So WP:Tutorial is another useful resource, for example. --ColinFine (talk) 17:28, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing bug?

Ok, I know I literally just asked a question but I need some help. Sometimes when i go to edit something and I hit the Shift key to capitalize a letter it moves my cursor to the beginning of the line. What do I do to get this to stop as it's very annoy? It only seems to happen when I'm editing something that has been edited before. Blaze The Wolf (talk) 14:23, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This might be a setting within your browser. I would check its settings. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Takes a strong man to deny... 14:29, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't happen anywhere else besides Wikipedia so it can't be a browser setting.Blaze The Wolf (talk) 16:51, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at the settings and Shift is not the key that should take me back to the beginning of a line. I'm on a chromebook and the shortcut to do that is Search + < which doesn't even include shift. I might look at my settings on Wikipedia to see if something is causing that to happen Blaze The Wolf (talk) 17:09, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    vandalism by IP-adres

I couldn't really figure out where to report this, but I assume that if I leave it here, it will be dealt with appropriately. I came across an edit made by 82.14.254.23 . He/She only made 3 edits on October 5 but all are clearly malicious. I reverted the 1 I came across (the other 2 were already reverted). --Dutchy45 (talk) 15:19, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Dutchy45, if it's blatant vandalism you can report them at WP:AIV. WP:TWINKLE can help facilitate the process. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:58, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks Tenryuu, I reported at WP:AIV. Dutchy45 (talk) 21:39, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Tenryuu, I was wondering if you could explain something? Now I've gotten an alert which says Your mention of 82.14.254.23 was not send because the user is anonymous. from WP:AIV. My message is also not on the project page anymore. So I guess something went wrong. What does this mean? And how do I fix it? --Dutchy45 (talk) 06:14, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dutchy45: The "your mention was not sent" message is harmless, and can be ignored. In this edit I've included a link to your user page so that you will receive a notification about this help desk post. But the software does not send notifications to IP editors, and, for some reason, has been coded to display this "not sent" message every time it thinks you are trying to notify one.
You did post at WP:AIV and an administrator checked it for you, as you can see in this revision. The post was removed shortly afterwards; that noticeboard has a very quick turnover, and once an entry is dealt with, it is removed fairly quickly. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:08, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@John of Reading: Ah, okay I get that now. And I saw that revision. Thanks for explaining. --Dutchy45 (talk) 14:16, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Dutchy45, to add on to John of Reading's comment, you have most likely enabled (in your preferences) the notification system to send you an alert when a ping cannot be sent. This is normal for IPs. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 07:10, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tenryuu: I thought the 2 (the alert and the absence on the project page) were connected. I wasn't aware I pinged the IP-adres. Is a ping always send when a username or IP-adres is bracketted? --Dutchy45 (talk) 14:16, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Dutchy45, I'm going to assume you did one of the following:

    [[User:Example]], {{u|Example}}, {{User|Example}}, {{user link|Example}}, {{ping|Example}}, {{Yo|Example}}, or {{reply to|Example}}

    before signing. You can find more info about pinging at WP:PING. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:52, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    @Tenryuu: I typed

    {{IPvandal|82.14.254.23}}

actually. I saw other reports there, that were done this way and assumed that was correct. --Dutchy45 (talk) 16:17, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dutchy45: If you take a look at the code used for {{IPvandal}} you'll see that it uses {{U}}, so it will ping the IP (even though it doesn't do anything). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:30, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tenryuu: Coding is way above my limited skills. I'll check out this WP:PING if I need anything "ping-related" :) and I now know not to worry about that particular alert. Thanks for all your help! --Dutchy45 (talk) 17:11, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to handle am entry for a location with two possible actual places

In South Carolina there are communities that are not part of a formal town or city thus unincorporated. They usually are loosely defined and most use a Post Office from a neighboring town. There are two such communities in South Carolina that have the exact same name, but are in different parts of the state. Should one augment the original entry or create some sort of second entry with a exact or similar name? So... how to handle this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Editor0663 (talkcontribs) 19:08, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I know about that one. There are three real Rome, Wisconsins (plus a New Rome), and two fictional ones.
The usual way is to create two separate articles: Bugtussle, Goober County, East Dakota and then Bugtussle, Hogwash County, East Dakota. You would then put a hatnote on the top of each one saying something like "This is an article about the settlement in Goober County; for the settlement in Hogwash County, see Bugtussle, Hogwash County, East Dakota" and vice versa. We don't normally create a disambiguation page unless there are three or more.--Orange Mike | Talk 19:41, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Confusion Regarding Zimbabwe Cricketer

    Hello Team,

There are two Zimbabwe Cricketers, "Wellington Masakadza" & "Richard Ngarava", Correct me if I'm wrong both are different players but the profile images in Wikipedia look the same or both images are of the same player, either it is of Wellington Masakadza or Richard Ngarava.

Thank you for your time and service, looking forward to the clarification for the same.

    Sincerely, A Nair — Preceding unsigned comment added by Astar01 (talkcontribs) 20:51, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Astar01, the Wikipedia articles Wellington Masakadza and Richard Ngarava don't have any images. The issue is on Google- which takes its information from many sources, not just Wikipedia. You would need to contact Google about this issue. Joseph2302 (talk) 20:54, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am new to Wikipedia and updating my company's page. Our logo is outdated and I want to upload the new logo. I am confused on the process. Can you help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by InsideOutdoors (talkcontribs) 23:36, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@InsideOutdoors: Certainly. First: abandon your exiting account and create a new one, since your current username is not allowed because it is a corporate name: see WP:USERNAME. After you have created a new account with an acceptable personal name, declare your status as a paid editor: WP:PAID. This is mandatory for you to comply with our terms of use. next, go to WP:LOGO to learn about uploading the new logo. Finally, go to the talk page of the article about your company and create a new section there with a request to add the new logo to the article and add the {{request edit}} syntax to that section. You are prohibited from changing the article directly because you are a paid editor. Another editor will then come along and update the logo. Please come back here if you have any questions during this process. -Arch dude (talk) 00:56, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: You are prohibited from changing the article directly because you are a paid editor. That's actually not what WP:PAID says:

This advises that those with a conflict of interest, including paid editors, are very strongly discouraged from directly editing affected articles, but should post content proposals on the talk pages of existing articles, and should put new articles through the articles for creation process, so they can be reviewed prior to being published.

Emphasis in original. What that means, InsideOutdoors, is that you will have a significantly easier time getting your changes to stay if you make edit requests instead of directly editing articles. You can directly edit the article, but any experienced editor here will tell you that it is a very bad idea. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:02, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@InsideOutdoors: please read Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest. If you need a more easy-to-understand page explaining this policy, click here. You may want to ask this question at the media copyright questions page, as depending on what the logo is, it may be able to be uploaded as in the public domain if it is 'simple' enough, or as fair use. Seagull123 Φ 00:47, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@InsideOutdoors: Editing the page while logged out does not remove the requirements of WP:PAID. It just exposes your IP address. —teb728 t c 07:40, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hope this is understandable . Kritish Mohapatra (talk) 11:30, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kritish Mohapatra. Wikipedia has nothing whatever to do with Facebook. Facebook, like anybody else, is allowed to reuse material from Wikipedia as long as it complies with the licence conditions. Wikipedia has no control over how Facebook uses its information. If you want somethign changed in Facebook, you will need to take that up with Facebooik.
Wikipedia articles do not normally link to social media sites: since Secondary Board High School has a link to the school's blog, there is no reason to link to any other social media accounts. I see no mention of "2km" in the article.
Please note that if you are connected with the school (as you appear to be) you should not be editing the article, but only making edit requests: see conflict of interest. Please note also that unless some independent reliably published sources about the school are added to the article, it is quite likely to get deleted for being not notable. --ColinFine (talk) 15:08, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Shashini Puvi, I don't see any self promotion there. Among other things, they didn't even write it. You wrote your own page, which is what self promotion is. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 14:37, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Shashini Puvi: your user page is a place to tell other editors about yourself as a wikipedia editor. See WP:USERPAGE. It is not a place to tell the general readership about your accomplishments in the outside world, except as they relate to you ability and interest in editing Wikipedia to make it a better encyclopedia. If you are notable as we define the term (WP:N), someone (not you) may choose to write an encyclopedia article about you. That will not be your user page. -Arch dude (talk) 18:32, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to add userboxes on talk page

Dear Help Desk, I am currently confused on how to add a user box to my talk page and don't understand, please explain this to me in the simplest way possible. --Takumi (talk) 13:55, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Staines Staines: In general, you include a userbox by typing its name in curly brackets. For example, if I were to include Template:User wikipedia on my Userpage, I type
    This user is a Wikipedian.
. Note that I have added a demo parameter to prevent categorisation on the Help desk. Victor Schmidt (talk) 14:28, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There is also information at Template:Userbox, though possibly not in the simplest terms. In general, user boxes can get very complicated, but if you have specific questions it may be easier to assist you. ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 14:34, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The easiest way in my opinion is find a page where that user box is used. See how it's edited in and just copy/paste it. --Dutchy45 (talk) 17:20, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There appears to be an archive of that url at archive.org here. The external link was removed at this edit.

    Language of the references/sources

    Hello,

I've seen countless times here in English Wikipedia where, when adding references/sources to sentences or claims, there is a citation field (correct me if this is the wrong term :D) used for informing readers what language the reference/source uses (lang=en / language=id). I understand that it is useful when citing non-English sources since this is an English Wikipedia after all, but is this really necessary or required when citing English sources? I notice that when citing an English source using the "lang=en", it displays nothing in the ref tool-tip (after hovering your mouse to the ref number), unless it is a language other than English. Does deleting them (the lang=en thing) violate any rules?

    Thank you. AdaCiccone (talk) 13:45, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Don't delete |language=en or |language=English (or the alias |lang=) just because you think it unnecessary. Very commonly, cs1|2 templates are copied from en.wiki to other-language Wikipedias where knowing that the source is an English source is important. If you want to do something that benefits those editors who copy cs1|2 templates to other-language wikis, convert the language name to the appropriate code so that the cs1|2 template renders the language name in the local language (translation by a human not required). A list of language names know to cs1|2 and their associated codes is at Template:Citation Style documentation/language/doc.

My article has got a speedy deletion tag

So what happened was is that one section of my article got this copyright tag on it and it was blanked out (I'm quite new to Wikipedia so I don't know what you call it), then a few days later it got a speedy deletion tag because of the same section of the article. Before the speedy deletion tag was placed, I re-wrote the problematic section where it redirected me on WP:CP (recent listings section in the listings of possible copyright problems section). Now I need to paraphrase it again but I can't remove the tag or edit it in source editing.--Limorina (talk) 16:24, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Limorina:You took the correct action when you contested the speedy deletion. For good measure, I also contested it after investigation. The admin who checks the speedy deletions will read our notes and will remove the speedy note from the article. -Arch dude (talk) 17:20, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    MediaWiki supported CSS

I tried using the CSS backdrop-filter: blur(3px); on my user page but found out that the style attribute value is replaced with /* insecure input */. Is there a list somewhere of supported CSS properties and functions? Can I ask for new properties and functions to be whitelisted? Thanks, Veritas94 (talk) 18:09, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's documented anywhere, but see the source. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 18:17, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Making statements which are backed up only by text extracted from a resource which is not freely available

I'm tweaking page ISO 4217. The text of this ISO standard is not freely available, but the data tables are available on the Web site of the ISO 4217 Maintenance Agency. Wikipedia section ISO 4217#Minor units of currency describes a particular field of these tables, called "Minor unit". It currently includes an extract from the text of the standard, though there is no way (obvious to me) of proving that it really is an extract from the text of the standard. Is that OK?

I'd like to improve the explanation provided in this section and to move the extract from the standard to somewhere lower down the page, where it can be read by readers who are sufficiently motivated to do so, while not getting in the way of the average reader. Is there some convention for doing this?

Finally, the extract from the standard mentions, and explains, four values of the "Minor unit" field, but does not mention two other values which are used in the data tables. Am I allowed to explain what those other values mean, without having proof that this is what they mean? Specifically, the extract mentions the values "0", "1", "2" and "3". The data tables also contain the values "4" and "N.A.". Am I allowed to extrapolate the meaning of "4" from the documented meanings of "1" through "3"? And am I allowed to write that "N.A." stands for "Not Applicable"?

    Thanks Misha Wolf (talk) 19:23, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think the best way to explain this, is that information behind a paywall, is just as valid as those freely available (but probably should be tagged as such.) Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 19:26, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Is there a standard form of words editors use to indicate that a cited resource is only accessible if purchased? And what about the questions in my second and third paragraphs? Thanks Misha Wolf (talk) 19:39, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Misha Wolf, you may be able to use {{subscription required}} or {{closed access}} to denote that it is not freely available. It usually follows (in the ref tags) right after the citation. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:03, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Misha Wolf: Most older physical books are only available "if purchased" or if you have access to a library. Similarly, ISO standards must be purchased unless you have access to an organization that has purchased them, so no real difference. I know of no standard wording similar to "paywall", but "paywall" is only relevant if you supply a URL. Go ahead and use "paywall" if you supply a URL, and use nothing if you do not. Technically, you should not extrapolate to "4" based on the excerpt (N.A. is surely reasonable though). Instead, ask at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange to see if someone with access to the ISO standard can look it up for you. -Arch dude (talk) 20:00, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, all. I'll follow your (plural) helpful advice. In particular, I've logged a request for (an extract from) the latest version of ISO 4217 at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request#ISO 4217:2015. Misha Wolf (talk) 22:47, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to exclude the Lua subpages from search of RD archives?

I occassionally like to search through the Reference Desk archives using the search box at Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives. I would like to not include the Lua archive pages such as Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Lua/Science/January_2013. Is there a way to exclude all the Lua subpages from the search? RudolfRed (talk) 20:39, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Include -incategory:Module in the search string.

    Thanks! RudolfRed (talk) 21:15, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, this doesn't work. Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Lua/Miscellaneous/January_2013 and other Lua subpages in the archive are not in any categories, from what I see. RudolfRed (talk) 02:53, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've had categories on my brain so perhaps that explains my answer... or the age is in and the wit is out ...
If the lua sub page names have the form Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Lua/... then doesn't -prefix:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Lua/ at the right end of the search string do the job?

Hi, it would be nice to have one or more resolutions intermediate between 755 × 1,024 pixels and 10,485 × 14,223 pixels, the latter being nearly 200 times the size of the former and hardly feasible to download or view. Also, a note on the above page says "The original file has a large number of pixels and when opened at full resolution, may either not load properly or cause your browser to freeze. These problems can be avoided by use of the ZoomViewer." However, when I try to use the "ZoomViewer" I get an error "No response from server iipsrv.fcgi". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C8:7B08:6A00:D9C5:AB0:19EC:73D5 (talk) 02:00, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

List of animals who kill the most humans each year wikipage

Someone put that the numbers exclude other causes of death, such as “abortions.” This is topic that becomes convoluted and messy. When does a fertilized egg become considered a living human, which can then be considered a life capable of killing. You see how messy it gets? Just remove that part. It’s unnecessary.
