    Shortcut

How would I go about creating a shortcut for a wikiproject subpage? Some of the pages already have shortcuts but I have added subpages that now need them. Ktkvtsh (talk) 00:48, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ktkvtsh Let's say I wanted WP:EXAMPLEREDIRECT to redirect to WP:Example. I would go to WP:EXAMPLEREDIRECT, type in #REDIRECT [[Wikipedia:Example]], and then WP:EXAMPLEREDIRECT would redirect to WP:EXAMPLE. This creates the 'shortcut'. Updating my Wikipedia page

    Attached is my latest CV 49.127.26.104 (talk) 07:52, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The attachment is strangely invisible. If your Wikipedia page says something that's out of date or otherwise erroneous, simply go to its talk page and at the foot of this talk page make your suggestions/requests, backing up each of these with a reliable source. -- Hoary (talk) 09:07, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Wiki Page with incorrect information

Hi, I am part of an organisation that has a wikipage - Widnes Wild Ice Hockey Club, Widnes - I have been trying to alter incorrect information on the page for a few months now and everytime i do the information is removed and reverted back to an older set of information. Is there a way i can confirm my legitamte connection to the club and our wish to change this faulse information. MikeTheHuss99 (talk) 09:31, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

MikeTheHuss99 If you are associated with the club, you need to declare a conflict of interest. If you are compensated in any manner(not just money) by the club, the Terms of Use require you to make a formal paid editing disclosure.
You have a slight misunderstanding here- your organization does not have a "wikipage" here- Wikipedia has an article about your organization, no different than if the New York Times wrote about your organization. Your organization has no special rights to the article, but its input(through you) is welcome; please read about how to make formal edit requests on the article talk page(Talk:Widnes Wild) detailing changes you feel are needed. 331dot (talk) 09:41, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This page is more for help with technical problems. Please ask for assistance at WP:Teahouse and write [[Widnes Wild]] to show the article you mean. That is displayed as a link: Widnes Wild. The brief answer to your question is that you can update the article but reliable sources are needed. Johnuniq (talk) 09:43, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe this page is limited to technical problems- at the top it states "This place is meant for questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia". The Teahouse is more geared to new/inexperienced users and is meant to be a friendlier place than this Help Desk, but as I've understood it their functions are otherwise similar. Technical issues should actually be discussed at the Village Pump. 331dot (talk) 09:45, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, but without using a lot of text that would confuse a new editor, what I said is pretty reasonable. Someone at the Teahouse might help with what needs to be done (if anything). Johnuniq (talk) 09:54, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
MikeTheHuss99, you could have asked your question either here or in the "Teahouse". You asked it here, and 331dot gave you a sound answer. Follow 331dot's advice; and if you get stuck then ask a follow-up question here. -- Hoary (talk) 11:52, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Misuse of booking template reference

Hello, recently I've noticed a misuse of the reference 2 in the article of Wikipedia Bots. Can you attempt to fix this? Thanks a lot. GreatPersonLikeMe (talk) 14:48, 16 August 2023 (UTC)GreatPersonLikeMeGreatPersonLikeMe (talk) 14:48, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    have a nice day

When I try to write an article or try to make changes to an article, a screen appears. it tells me to type some letters on the screen. I write the letters, but it keeps demanding the same thing. Does anyone know about this problem? Hamid Huseyni (talk) 15:55, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is a security feature known as CAPTCHA for new accounts that prevents bot-like editing. See this page for more information. --Jayron32 15:59, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The link you provided already sends me to the helpdesk, that is, here. I'm not a bot or something. so how can i solve this problem? Hamid Huseyni (talk) 16:06, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Hamid Huseyni. Both of the links work fine for me, try opening them up in a new browser window? Here are the raw URLs. The second one is specifically useful to your situation.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Captcha Qcne (talk) 16:11, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, the solutions suggested on the page don't work very well. I guess I will not be able to solve this problem. I'm sorry for bothering you too. Hamid Huseyni (talk) 16:24, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I'm sorry - did you mean that the third solution suggestion was to come to the Help Desk? Apologies, I misunderstood and thought you meant your links weren't opening correctly. Try this solution: make sure that after entering the CAPTCHA text you click the 'Publish changes' button, not the 'Refresh' button. The latter button will instead just generate a new CAPTCHA. Let us know if that works? Qcne (talk) 16:30, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To be more clear, CAPTCHA comes up when I add a text. After entering the CAPTCHA text, I press the publish change button. So I am not renewing. but the same CAPTCHA keeps coming, I write once, it comes again, I write again and it comes again. I'm not typing the text wrong, I'm typing it right, but it keeps coming. Anyway, I don't want to bother too much about it, maybe it will get better with time. Hamid Huseyni (talk) 16:36, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    I wonder if it's an issue with your browser. 331dot (talk) 16:37, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Actually, I'm typing from my phone, I don't have a computer. Hamid Huseyni (talk) 16:39, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Are you using the app, or do you view Wikipedia in a browser? 331dot (talk) 16:45, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I go to wikipedia from google. Does the app make a difference? Hamid Huseyni (talk) 16:50, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to give you too much trouble, maybe you have a lot of work. Hamid Huseyni (talk) 16:37, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My recollection is that when I give a correct answer to a Wikipedia captcha, it just presents me with another one; and that this behaviour is long-standing. But once you've given your correct answer, you can ignore the next one, and just get on with making your edit. Maproom (talk) 16:49, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I remember giving at least 20 correct answers. but it keeps coming :D Hamid Huseyni (talk) 16:56, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I finally managed to write an article with my ip address, but someone is treating me like a stocking. It's like I've been blocked before. eh I'm dealing with bullshit. Hamid Huseyni (talk) 17:34, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Salakanagara, a modern myth

There is a page on the Salakanagara Kingdom, and it is highly problematic. Salakanagara is a modern myth, as no reliable sources are present on this topic. dates of wiki articles

hi --- i just looked up "critical theory" and "social issues" and downloaded them as PDFs. when i file such items, i almost always imbed the "last edited" date from the bottom of the article. that date was omitted from both PDFs, so i re-checked your "live" articles, and those dates are present there. out of curiosity, why are the last-edited dates not carried into the PDF's. tanx Martin da nazz (talk) 02:03, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Martin da nazz. Every Wikipedia article has a "History" tab, which is easily visible in the Vector 2010 skin that I use. It may be harder to find when using other skins, apps and mobile sites. In any event, Critical theory was last edited by a bot on August 12 and a human editor on August 6. Both were minor edits. Cullen328 (talk) 02:37, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the default Vector 2022 skin it's under the Tools selection, on the right at the top of the page. — Qwerfjkltalk 21:00, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Martin da nazz I just now downloaded Critical theory and the final line of my output says Retrieved from "https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Critical_theory&oldid=1170028747" , so the link points to the specific OID that was used to generate the .pdf: in effect, a timestamp. Was that missing in your version? Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:37, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Why?

In Wikimedia Commons whenever I want to upload something it doesn't work CyberDaniel (talk) 03:00, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@CyberDaniel Can't say for sure (since I don't know what you tried), but a common mistake is to upload pictures you didn't take yourself with your own camera, Commons only accept "free" stuff. Commons:First steps may be of help to you. Also, Commons has its own help desk. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 05:47, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As GGS says, Commons has its own help desk, C:Commons:Help desk. But if you post there, I very strongly advise you to be clearer about your problem. "It doesn't work" is an utterly useless phrase for anybody trying to investigate a problem. Tell them what you were trying to do, how you were doing it, and what happened. (There are no uploads in your user log on Commons, so it's not the problem that GGS guessed). ColinFine (talk) 09:52, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Draft:Zvi Landsman

Hi, it's been 6 months total since I first published a draft. Since, it gpt declined and now it's been 2 months since I edited it and still wasnt reviewed, any thoughts on how to speed this process? Newlywo (talk) 15:16, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Newlywo As far as I can tell, your article draft has been declined six times, starting with the first decline this February. It still contains unreferenced assertions such as Landsman is single and lives in Tel Aviv. You need to put in the effort to fix all the comments left by the reviewers if you expect it to be reviewed favourably at the seventh attempt. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:23, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But Newlywo, please don't put in any more effort: DoubleGrazing has now rejected the draft (not the same as declining it). There's a big sign saying "STOP". This means "stop". -- Hoary (talk) 02:39, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. @GreatPersonLikeMe: Please link pages you refer to. The article count is shown in numerous places and "outside of the official page" could mean many things. After some searching I guess you mean https://www.wikipedia.org. That page is not controlled by the English Wikipedia and we cannot edit it but it's updated periodically. The number seems close enough and I see no rush to try to get somebody to update it faster than normal. The ending "+" means at least so it's not wrong but could just be a little more accurate. Conflict of Interest Query

    Hello

I am confused about how conflict of interest should be dealt with. I am an indie author that has just released a book, so I was going to do a wikipedia page. However I understand that it is a conflict of interest. So does that mean I can't create the page or does that mean there is a process I am not finding. I have done a search on the FAQ's but am still a little confused. Basically I don't want to break any of the guidelines so would like to be clear on how to proceed. SMHumphreys (talk) 11:34, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@SMHumphreys Thanks for asking. The basics are at WP:COI. You are not prohibited from writing a draft about your book (or yourself) but both are strongly discouraged owing to the COI. See WP:AUTO regarding an autobiography. Wikipedia must not be used for promotion of any kind, so any article about your book will need to be based on what people independent of you have published about the book. It is likely to be WP:TOOSOON if the book has just been released. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:01, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The very basics are at WP:PSCOI (though Mike Turnbull's summation and advice are still accurate). Also see WP:NBOOK for our guidelines on what's needed for us to have an article on a specific book. Most books even by commercially-successful authors don't qualify. —Cryptic 15:34, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Each time I upload a photograph of of a living person picked from reliable news portals, admins keeps flagging it for deletion.

I usually state that I am not the author or creator of those images and I so include the link of the news websites where I picked the images from. Yet they still always delete them for copyright issues. All the people are write about on contribute on a successful public figures whose images are freely used in the public domain

    Please what can I do? Semilore90 (talk) 21:12, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If they're on "reliable news portals", they're essentially never in the public domain. See WP:FAQ/Copyright. —Cryptic 21:18, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Semilore90. Any photo that you find on a news site must be presumed to be protected by copyright unless you have solid evidence to the contrary. Such photos are almost never in the public domain. You can only upload photos of living people that are either properly licensed for re-use, or unambiguously free of copyright restrictions. Ref number 6 is in red - please fix if able. thanks 2405:6E00:2EF2:BC00:759C:8E0B:D81D:6D1C (talk) 02:01, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done, added the missing year in accessdate. Cmr08 (talk) 03:04, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Number 9 is all wrong - sorry - please leave in quote Thank you as always. 175.38.42.62 (talk) 03:16, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done, I never touched a quote, just added the missing year in accessdate. Cmr08 (talk) 03:18, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Could the newly added file of house in snow be made a little bigger please? Thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 04:44, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done. But have you considered that instead we could crop the picture, so as to portray the house larger and with less snow? Maproom (talk) 06:50, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The new snow file added today is all wrong - I cannot get a caption underneath it. It should read: Long lived at Severn Bank, Severn Stoke, Worcester.

    Thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 07:47, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You are flooding this page with requests for help for every change you wish to make. I might suggest that you use the article talk page to make edit requests instead of coming here. 331dot (talk) 07:57, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Or, at least please keep your requests under a single header. 331dot (talk) 07:58, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For a page ostensibly about one Charles Wigram Long, a remarkable percentage is devoted to this or that Lupton. Please see and feel free to comment on Talk:Charles Wigram Long#The ubiquitous Luptons. -- Hoary (talk) 08:36, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's more Lupton (and Middleton) -cruft added just today to yet another article. Very strange. -- Hoary (talk) 10:11, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have rearranged these questions. As 331dot has just said above (and as I have said earlier) please do not recycle headers. -- Hoary (talk) 08:45, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Correcting birthdate

My name is Christopher Britton actor. The birthdate on my Wiki page is incorrect. I would like to correct that mistake. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Britton_(actor) I would also like to upload a recent photo. Dennis Vine (talk) 02:30, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The birthdate was added in this edit on July 28, 2023. I have reverted the edit as it was unsourced. Cmr08 (talk) 03:10, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dennis Vine: To add a new image, first acquire an image to which you own the copyright. The copyright of an image belongs to the photographer until the photographer explicitly conveys it in writing, so the best way to do this is to take a selfie. After you have the image on your computer, proceed to Wikipedia:File upload wizard. -Arch dude (talk) 04:22, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dennis Vine: you may add your birthdate to the article, but only if you can cite a reliable published source. -Arch dude (talk) 04:25, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reference number 133 has red ink in it and I cannot work out what in fact I have failed to do. please alter so that the red ink goes and please leave in quote. With thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 05:42, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please note - reference 133 is still all wrong (in red) please fix and leave in quote. thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 07:41, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done. You had given the access date as August 19 2033. You meant 2023. Maproom (talk) 07:44, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Connected templates

In the article stub about Cytherellidae the template says it belongs to the order Platycopida, which is correct. And the template in the article stub about Punciidae says that too belongs to the order Platycopida, which is wrong. It belongs to the order Palaeocopida. But when I change the info in the template to correct it, the template describing Cytherellidae changes too, from Platycopida to Palaeocopida. And vice versa. The two templates are connected, so when you edit it in one of the mentioned articles, the same thing happens in the other. Is there a way to separate the templates? Hipporoo (talk) 07:56, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The taxoboxes used in the two articles are automatically populated from Wikidata. I suspect that this means that there is an error in the wikidata items, though I confess I can't see what. d:Q11847357, the Wikidata entry for Punciidae, says its parent taxon is Punciodiea, not Platycopida, so I don't know where the wrong information is coming from.
    I suggest asking at Template talk:taxobox. ColinFine (talk) 09:52, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Draft:HD 85628 Ab

The reference 1 in Draft:HD 85628 Ab is partly red. How do I solve this? (talk) 07:56, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's because you had a space in your URL. Now fixed. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 09:25, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw there is an image showing a mobile screen with a bot translating from one to another. It is listed in the paragraph "Automatic editing" by an Arabic author, maybe. 113.185.106.84 (talk) 09:20, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CXT is probably what you are referring to - although it's not an AI, and we don't allow automated translation on the English Wikipedia. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 09:22, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Filesize calculation template

Does anyone know if a template for converting data filesize formats exist?

I.E.: a template like {{convert}} that could convert a filesize like 2000 bytes into 2.000 kilobytes; so on and so forth.

    macbrew 09:23, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    @Macbrew I think that {{Val}} can handle bytes. See Module:Val/units. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:22, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I could technically convert a filesize string into an exponentiation representation using {{val}}.
    • Syntax: {{val|2000|e=3}}
    • Output: 2000×103 (This would equate to 2 megabytes or 2,000,000 bytes)
    This isn't exactly what I'm looking for however. macbrew 12:06, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull: File sizes are a mess, because they are sometimes in actual decimal powers and sometimes in "binary" powers (see Byte#Multiple-byte_units. Is this what you are referring to? My opinion: stick with decimal unless you are certain the source means binary powers. -Arch dude (talk) 15:33, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Macbrew I think that ping was meant for you... Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:38, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What is this link? And how to access it directly?

In the Wikipedia article, I saw an image with a bot and the Arabic language was being translated. The image is in the paragraph "Automatic editing"of Operation". I want to upload a new version of it. And here is the link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_translation_Screenshot_%DB%B2%DB%B0%DB%B2%DB%B3%DB%B0%DB%B6%DB%B1%DB%B5-%DB%B2%DB%B0%DB%B5%DB%B9%DB%B2%DB%B3_Brave.jpg. Thank you so much! User:GreatPersonLikeMe 10:31, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@GreatPersonLikeMe That image is in an article about Wikipedia at Wikipedia#Automated editing. The file itself is stored on Commons at the this link: File:Wiki translation Screenshot_۲۰۲۳۰۶۱۵-۲۰۵۹۲۳_Brave.jpg. I'm not sure why you would want to upload a new version but that is best done on Commons, perhaps after consulting with the editor who uploaded the original. Please read c:Commons:Overwriting existing files for the guidance on overwriting files. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:10, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. TurnbullNo. Just want to know how to access the Wikipedia's bot of translation. Keep determined to attach with https:// encryption first. Thanks User:GreatPersonLikeMe 11:18, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Remember to attach the link directing to the English version only. Your sincerely, User:GreatPersonLikeMe 11:21, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The tool is explained at WP:CXT. The English Wikipedia does not allow its use to create article drafts here, although some other-language versions do allow it to be used to translate from English. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:28, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You can look at the edit histories of articles that you remember editing, focusing on the approximate timeframes when you were editing. See if you can recognize your username. -Arch dude (talk) 15:07, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Where to move an article?

As an IP I can't do the move myself but I'm not sure where it would go in the first place. A couple of days ago I discovered an ELEVEN YEAR old article with the ABSURD title Violet Cripps, Baroness Parmoor (a title the subject never was known by or entitled to)...I don't know if it might be a "copyright trap" or something.

    To recap:

    • The lady in question (1891-1983) was born Violet Nelson.
    • in her first marriage she was Mrs. Rowley.
    • in her second (her basic claim to notability...the wife of an extraordinarily rich/famous/prominent man) she was The Duchess of Westminster as second wife of the 2nd Duke of Westminster ("Bend Or") from 1920 to 1926.(This was the only time in her life she was "a peeress" as identified in the lede).
    • Divorce made her Violet, Duchess of Westminster....retaining the surname Grosvenor.
    • In 1927 she remarried The Hon. Frederick Heyworth Cripps DSO and thus became The Hon. Mrs. Frederick Cripps.
    • In 1951 she divorced and never married again though I have dim memories of a Debrett's Peerage from her last years including her on a list of former wives of former Dukes as her former style of "Violet, Duchess of Westminster" despite there being a later Duchess named Viola.
    • In March 1977 the man she had divorced over a quarter-century before succeeded his 94-year-old brother as 3rd Baron Parmoor and he then died that October and was succeeded by their son Milo.
    • Neither of these successions should have changed the ex-wife's title...Marjorie Pratt, Countess of Brecknock (1900-1989) divorced the then courtesy Earl of Brecknock in 1941 and remained Marjorie Countess of Brecknock for the rest of her life(that is how she was in Who's Who, that is how she is remembered) without her ex-husband's becoming Marquess Camden in 1943 or their son's succeeding him in 1983 making her Marchioness Camden.

So...the article title is wrong. But should it simply lose "Baroness Parmoor" (with the repetitions of "Lady Parmoor" in the text dropped as well) and be "Violet Cripps", or change to the more prominent past title where you get Google hits on her, or what? 108.29.145.226 (talk) 15:11, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IP editor. If you can back up your bullet points with citations to reliable published sources, please go ahead and edit the article: currently it is in a very poor state. Its title can be changed later, once it is properly sourced. Note that Wikipedia considers Who's Who an unreliable source. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:58, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Normally, I would check the sources cited in the article to see how they refer to her. But there aren't any. Maproom (talk) 17:00, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
