Maryam Tanveer Ali (Urdu: مریم تنویر علی, born 27 July 1989), known by her stage name Maya Ali, is a Pakistani actress who works in Urdu television and films.[1][2] One of Pakistan’s highest paid actresses, Ali has received several accolades including five Hum Awards and a Lux Style Award out of three nominations.[3]

Ali made her debut with a brief role in the telenovela Durr-e-Shehwar and later received praise for portraying the titular character in Aun Zara (both 2012) and the social drama series, Shanakhat (2014). Ali achieved her breakthrough when she starred in the romance, Mann Mayal (2016) which earned her the Lux Style Award for Best Television Actress. Ali received further acclaim for her role as Zuleikha in the romantic drama, Mera Naam Yousuf Hai and in the ensemble family drama Diyar-e-Dil (both 2015), the latter of which earned her a nomination at the Lux Style Awards for Best Television Actress.

Ali made her film debut with the romantic action comedy, Teefa in Trouble (2018) and subsequently starred in the romantic-comedy Parey Hut Love (2019), both ranking amongst the highest grossing Pakistani films of all time with the latter earning her two nominations at the Lux Style Awards. Following a short departure from television, Ali made her comeback with the romantic drama, Pehli Si Muhabbat (2021).

Early life

Maya Ali was born Maryam Tanveer Ali on 27 July 1989 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, to Muslim parents. Her father, Tanveer Ali, was a businessman, and her mother, Shagufta Nazar, is a homemaker.[4][5] She has one younger brother, Afnan. Ali completed her master's degree in mass communication from the Queen Mary College.[6][7][8] According to Maya Ali, her father was against her working in the entertainment industry and did not talk to her for six years and According to Maya Ali, his father was died in 2016 and she was in very gulit why she choose showbiz industry.[9][10][11]

Ali started her career at an early age, working as a video jockey for the channels Samaa TV, Waqt News and Dunya News.[12][13]

Career

Early work and breakthrough (2012–2016)

In 2012, Ali made her debut on television with a supporting role in the Haissam Hussain-directed drama Durr-e-Shehwar, portraying the younger sister of the eponymous character; it was telecasted on Hum TV.[14][15][16] Following this, Ali secured her first lead role in the adaptation of the novel of the same name, Aik Nayee Cinderella opposite Osman Khalid Butt and Faizan Khawaja. This was her second project to be directed under Hussain.[17] Critic Fatima Awan criticised the drama, finding it to "underestimate the taste and sensibility of viewers", and dismissed Ali's performance.[18] She then starred in the comedy drama, Aunn Zara once again under the direction of Haissam Hussain.[19] Playing the role of Zara, she reunited with Butt as his wife.[20] Writing for Dawn, Abbas Hussain lauded Ali's performance, praising her as a "complete natural" and acknowledged the improvement made from her previous drama.[21]

In 2013, Ali starred in her first project without Hussain in the Fahim Burney-directed Khoya Khoya Chand as Ahmareen alongside Ahsan Khan and Sohai Ali Abro. In her second project of the year, Ali starred as a possessive sister in Ranjish Hi Sahi.[22] Awan praised Ali for her progressively improving performance as the series advanced.[23] Ali's third and final project of 2013 was the drama, Meri Zindagi Hai Tu directed by Amin Iqbal. The drama marked a reunion with Ahsan Khan and also starred Ayeza Khan. Critic Maaz Ahmed Siddiqui praised Ali's performance finding her "absolutely successful" in portraying the character of Namreen.[24]

Directed by Waseem Abbas, Ali's role in the 2014 family drama, Ladoon Mein Pali generally went unnoticed.[25][26] However, her second release in the social drama series, Shanakht proved to be a significant advancement in her career where she portrayed a devout Muslim woman who faces criticism from her family due to her beliefs.[27][28] The drama was a major success with both critics and viewers alike[29] with Zahra Mirza appreciating Ali's change in dialogue delivery.[30] She then went on to star as Saman in Zid alongside Ahsan Khan in which her performance was poorly received.[31] A critic for Dawn criticised the lack of emotional depth in Ali’s character, finding "nothing appealing".[32]

In 2015, Ali starred in Mehreen Jabbar's romantic drama Mera Naam Yousuf Hai which was loosely based on the story "Yusof-o Zulaikhā" (یوسف و زلیخا) by Jami in his book, Haft Awrang. She portrayed the role of Zulaikha opposite Imran Abbas.[33] Sadaf Siddique of Dawn appreciated Ali’s "restrained performance".[34] In her final project of the year, she played the role of an estranged granddaughter in the ensemble family drama Diyar-e-Dil, alongside Osman Khalid Butt, Abid Ali, Sanam Saeed, Mikaal Zulfiqar, Hareem Farooq and Ali Rehman Khan. The series was based on the novel of the same name by Farhat Ishtiaq. For her performance in the series, she won the Hum Award for Best Actress Popular and earned her first Lux Style Award for Best Actress nomination.[35][36] The drama emerged the highest rated of 2015.[11]

In 2016, Ali made a major breakthrough with her role as Manahil in Mann Mayal alongside Hamza Ali Abbasi, Gohar Rasheed and Aisha Khan. While Ali gained national recognition for her role, the latter half of the drama received negative reviews, with some criticism towards her performance.[37] Aamna Haider Isani of The News International found Ali to "go overboard every now and then" but thought it was "refreshing" to watch "a female protagonist who is boisterous and lively and unafraid to speak her mind".[38] Despite this, the drama emerged one of the highest rated of all time and Ali earned the Lux Style Award for Best Television Actress for her performance.[39] She then appeared amongst an ensemble cast in the romance, Sanam directed by Haseeb Hassan.[40] Initially, the series garnered positive reviews; however, as it advanced, it started receiving mixed to negative critiques from critics, attributed to its storyline.[41]

Professional expansions and television comeback (2017-present)

In 2018, Ali made her film debut opposite Ali Zafar in the romantic action comedy film Teefa in Trouble.[42][43] Along with positive reception for the film, Ali's performance as a Polish born rebellious daughter was particularly praised.[44] Omair Alavi of Samaa wrote that Ali came as a "breath of fresh air and looks naturally beautiful", however, she "needs to work on her dialogue delivery but here it suited her character".[45] OyeYeah thought that Ali has the "required energy" for the role and handles the "acting, dancing part right".[46] At the time of its release, the film was the most expensive Pakistani film ever made.[47] Trade journalists had high expectations for the film which ultimately became the third Pakistani film to cross the Rs. 500 million (US$1.7 million) mark, despite facing protests due to sexual harassment claims made by Meesha Shafi against Zafar and film piracy following its release.[48][49][50]

Directed by Asim Raza, Ali consecutively starred in her second film with the romantic comedy, Parey Hut Love (2019) opposite Sheheryar Munawar.[51] Structured in four segments, the movie narrates the tale of a hopeful actor (Munawar) who becomes enamoured with a woman (portrayed by Ali) already committed to someone else.[52] The film received mixed reviews from critics, but Ali was praised for her performance.[53] The Express Tribune lauded Ali for the way she "handle[d] her character with maturity; [she] impresses the audience in almost every scene", adding that the role proves "that she can, without a doubt, be the next superstar of Pakistani cinema, provided she selects great films with greater directors".[54] Conversely, Mahnoor Bari criticised her character, finding it "unclear whether Saniya’s character is a case of rushed writing or acting".[55] Despite this, the film earned over Rs. 300 million (US$1.0 million) to emerge as one of the highest-grossing Pakistani films of all time.[56] At the annual Lux Style Awards, she received two Best Actress nominations.[57]

After a five year break from television, Ali made her comeback with the romantic drama, Pehli Si Muhabbat (2021); it marked her second collaboration with Munawar and fifth with Faiza Iftikhar.[58] Directed by Anjum Shahzad, the series received generally positive reivews from critics.[59] Despite this, Ali's performance was listed in the worst performances of 2021 by many.[60][61] Later that year, Ali appeared as Sonia in the historical drama Jo Bichar Gaye, based on true events from the Independence of Bangladesh and subsequent 1971 Indo-Pak War including the Fall of Dhaka, in her fourth collaboration with Haissam Hussain. The serial was criticality acclaimed but was a failure in terms of ratings and viewership.[62][63] Despite this, Ali's performance received critical acclaim with Sadaf Haider of Dawn praising her for "showing us what a good actor can achieve if she is given something more than the one-dimensional bholi larkiyan [innocent girls] our dramas are littered with", further adding that her "dialogue delivery, body language and expressions convey all of Soniya’s stubborn individualism and courage at every step".[64][65] Ali's sole release of 2023 was the portrayal of a straightforward American returnee in Yunhi opposite Bilal Ashraf. It received mixed reviews from critics and audience alike.[66] Regardless, Ali’s performance received positive reviews from critics. Writing for The Brown Identity, Sophia Qureshi commended Ali’s "exceptional performance".[67]

Ali will next star in the Shoaib Mansoor-directed film, Aasmaan Bolay Ga opposite Emmad Irfani and will also be seen in the Netflix Original Series, Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo which is an official adaptation of Farhat Ishtiaq’s Urdu-language novel of the same name.[68][69][70]

Other work and media image

Ali is brand ambassador of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre[71] and has visited different institutions to raise awareness of breast cancer among young girls.[72][73] Ali, along with her two cousins, has also launched her own clothing brand, MAYA Pret-A-Porter.[74] She hosted Eid special show, named Milan, on 7 February 2017.[75] She is the brand ambassador of Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League.[76] On 19 April 2017, she and Ali Zafar performed at the sixteenth ceremony of the Lux Style Awards on Zafar's song "Ishq".[77][78][79] Ali walked the ramp of Bridal Week 2018 as showstopper for Nomi Ansari and has been a brand ambassador for him several years after.[80][81]

She serves as an ambassador for a number of brands and products, such as Lux, QMobile and Sprite. She has appeared as a guest on many television shows, including Sunrise from Istanbul, that was hosted by Maria Wasti in Turkey, The Afternoon Show with Yasir, Tonite with HSY and With Samina Peerzada.[82][83] With over 7 million followers on Instagram, she is one of the most followed actresses in the country.[84] In January 2021, the clothing brand, Alkaram Studio, announced Ali as the next Alkaram Woman for the year 2021.[85]
