Quotes

[edit]

The quotes section is getting a bit on the long side (i.e. nearly half the article), maybe move all but the best to wikiquote? Sfnhltb 04:35, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since when does Tim Allen make the noise "Wamp wamp wamp"? Calling it some sort of grunting would be more accurate. 142.177.215.29 20:22, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed the "Wamp wamp wamp" thing as well so I changed it. Also fixed the "ride on" to "riding mower". Hopefully it all looks better. DasBub 03:30, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Corvair

[edit]

The space shuttle used in the episode although a joke it is of an interesting disign similar to early ideas i saw mention in a documentry on the sacing of the shuttle programme. Strapping a shuttle on top of the rocket protects it from falling debris and also alows for large shuttles of a sort, im not sure if thats possible but it could be with a large launch system. The Shuttle is impressive for just a cartoon, why is there no article on the shuttle itself and how it relates to real shuttles and proposed shuttle designs? 739 pm Bst 13th of the 8th, 2006.

Good point, if you ask me, the shuttle looks a lot like the hermes shuttle that ESA was developing over the late 80's/early 90's.Boyinabox 23:57, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

James Taylor

[edit]

When James Taylor comes on the radio, Homer says, "Wow, former president James Taylor." Does anyone know what the meaning of this line is?

He confuses him with fromer president Zachary Taylor Sickboy3883 13:04, 20 April 2007 (UTC) On a related note, does anyone know the names of the songs James Taylor sings to Homer and the guys?Sickboy3883 13:05, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fire and RainDFS (talk) 22:21, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

On a note related to the note above this related note, has anyone else heard the DVD commentary for this episode? I think the writers may actually think there was a President James Taylor... 138.69.160.1 21:27, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article is of the same quality of several Simpsons GAs, however, there is one issue with the page - Image:Deep Space Homer2.png is too big, and should be half the size in both directions.

If this issue is fixed, I'll pass the article. Will (talk) 10:28, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ticker Tape Parade

[edit]

Does anyone know what march they are playing during the parade for the Inanimate Carbon Rod? My friend says it may be a Sousa March, but she doesn't know which one. Chris16447 (talk) 03:51, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Race Banyon?

[edit]

Can someone confirm or deny this character as a homage to the bodyguard from Johnny Quest, Race Bannon? —Preceding unsigned comment added by SpectreAgent (talkcontribs) 17:28, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's Race Banyon.--S Philbrick(Talk) 21:28, 8 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia

[edit]

I know it's not Wikipedia policy to have trivia but I just noticed that in this episode it says that Homer was never made Employee of the Month and at the beginning when the inanimate carbon rod gets it over him, HOWEVER actually he IS made employee of the month in episode 305, Homer Defined.

Overlord Meme

[edit]

The discussion at http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-for-one-welcome-our-new-insect-overlords states

“I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords” is a memorable quote from the 1977 film adaptation of H.G. Wells’ short story Empire of the Ants.

Others are making the same claim. I have not seen the movie and cannot find a copy of the script, but this attribution has been disputed and should not be treated as reliable. My thanks to Gran2 for pointing this out. Cerberus (talk) 13:56, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a quote from that film; rather, the entire Kent Brockman sequence is a reference to the film. Drsruli (talk) 01:29, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural references

[edit]

To me, it's quite clear that the brown suited guy is meant to be Deke Slayton, Chief Astronaut. Don't want to put this in the main article without someone else agreeing though! King Rikk (talk) 20:39, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at WP:OR. You need a 3rd party, reliable sourcing confirming that. CTF83! 00:35, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I mean. Unfortunately... I've had no luck finding it mentioned anywhere. Maybe it's a coincidence! King Rikk (talk) 11:10, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Aldrin image

[edit]

@SchroCat: Did you have any thoughts on specific cropping? The image does not break into the references section on my home computer, but does on my work computer (screen size difference). Let me know your thoughts. Kees08 (Talk) 00:04, 10 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think that a shade below his right hand should be good - and you could probably take a tiny amount off the top (not too much, or it'll look a bit squashed). That should do it. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 08:21, 10 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Took a tad off the right too; I can go back and widen it to decrease the aspect ratio if needed. Changed the upright value on the page a little. Also noticed he is holding a Buzz Lightyear figurine when I was editing, not sure how I missed that before! Kees08 (Talk) 17:31, 10 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent – that's much better. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 22:41, 10 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Parodies

[edit]

At the Press Conference, Homer parodies the closing of the first "Planet of The Apes" film.

During training, the fight between Homer and Barney, where the NASA scientists are wagering quatloos, is a parody of Star Trek TOS S2E16 "The Gamesters of Triskelion". Drsruli (talk) 23:15, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Did the real NASA ratings improve or just the in-universe ones?

[edit]

At the end of the plot outline, there's a citation to a book that claims that NASA's TV ratings improve; however, I can't seem to locate the part that specifies if they mean the real NASA or the in-universe NASA. Please investigate and clarify.

Parodies

The satellite bumps a figure of an encased embryo resembling Homer Simpson on the head. The encased embryo floating in space was a reference to one of the final scenes in 2001 A Space Odyssey 2601:244:5080:4F70:34D2:A482:1112:EACD (talk) 02:01, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
