Suicide letter

[edit]

When we put aside copyright issues, is it ethical for an encyclopedic project to publish a transcript of Jiah Khan's suicide note?? She addresses a (presumably) living person in it, and I don't think it is particularly sensitive and considerate - both to her and to the person she addresses. I'll post this also at WP:BLPN. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 14:19, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've responded there--grossly inappropriate content in several respects, and I am so sure about this, that I have removed it. This is an admin action under BLP enforcement. DGG ( talk ) 22:26, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey what's so wrong about putting her suicide note in the wikipedia page? I strongly feel it must be included. Every single news website has published it! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sudarshansudarshan (talkcontribs) 04:10, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We are not a tabloid newspaper, but an encyclopedia. I've removed it again. The note is available via external link. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 05:53, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Jian Khan is NOT in Dil Se

[edit]

I have seen the film and Manisha Koirala's role is played by Priya Parulekar who also played Young Manisha in Khamoshi. Shakirfan (talk)

@Abbasquadir: You are responding to a conversation from 7 years ago, so I don't think anyone will care. Please include a reference. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:32, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Have already included 3 references! Abbasquadir (talk) 16:07, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Abbasquadir: Clearly I meant when you add it to the article. By the way, this edit contained a reference that did not resolve. It has an access-date of 2013. Please check references rather than just copy/pasting them into articles assuming they say what you think they say. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:32, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
where have I copy-pasted into article? It's into the Talkpage dear! Please check before assuming! Abbasquadir (talk) 16:14, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Abbasquadir: Please pay attention. I provided a link above, but here it is again: In this edit of yours, you added a reference into the article. The reference didn't resolve. If you had actually checked it, you would know that. And since it has an access date of October 2013, that suggests that you copied it from somewhere instead of formatting it from scratch. Got it? Semi-protected edit request on 14 August 2020

[edit]

Hello. My request on the Jiah Khans wikipedia page is that , sources allwge that it was staged as suicide, but it wasnt a suicide. So , the cause of death being proclaimed as suicide can be confusing. The mother of Jiah Khan is still fighting thw case, and insists that it has been a murder that is staged as a suicide. Immediately listing thw cause the cause of death as suicide might be wrong, and i prefer that it might be changed to proclaimed as suicide but some sources say murder..something like that. Suicide Note written by Jiah

[edit]

SOURCE: Jiah's hand written suicide note

(Redacted)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Abbasquadir (talkcontribs) 18:14, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've redacted the note because it is potentially a copyright violation. I've also removed the content from the article because if India Today published the entire note, the only mention of rape or torture is "After all the pain, the rape, the abuse, the torture I have seen previously I didn't deserve this." That's highly ambiguous phrasing that could be an accusation that Pancholi committed these acts, or it could also be interpreted in other ways, including that Khan experienced these things "previously" or prior to her relationship with Pancholi. I don't know how anyone can say definitively that she was accusing Pancholi of rape and physical torture. Also, "torture" is vague. People often use the word as hyperbole, or to describe emotional turmoil. So again, it's not clear that she was describing physical torture, especially at the hands of Pancholi. And since it's potentially defamatory content, we have to be very careful about how we present this information. I'd only be comfortable including it if the wider Wikipedia community could come up with a way to present some form of that content. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 21:24, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cyphoidbomb: Actually, there are two mentions of torture in Jiah Khan's letter as published by India Today. The one you cite from page 2 is preceded by this on page 1: "Yet you tortured me everyday." But that's nitpicking. What I'm curious about is the potential copyright violation. I haven't a clue about public domain in India. But it appears that after having been recovered from Jiah Khan's house following her death, the letter was included in a CBI charge sheet, which is where India Today got a copy. So who would be the copyright holder—the estate of Jiah Khan; the Central Bureau of Investigation; its parent Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions; the Government of India; or Living Media India Limited, publisher of India Today? Thank you. NedFausa (talk) 22:23, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it is nitpicking. I deliberately avoided clarifying that in my post because it wasn't relevant and would not have impacted the substance of my comment. As for copyright, I would imagine that the person who wrote the letter would be the copyright holder, in the way that the person who takes a photo is by default the copyright holder. However, I did not attend law school. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 22:28, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Abbasquadir: re: this edit, you should be aware that this is considered edit-warring. When content you submit is reverted, your recourse is to seek consensus by opening a discussion on the matter. I detailed my rationale for removal above. Note also that potentially defamatory content must be removed and the careless way the content is written is potentially defamatory. This is not a trivial matter, and if you restore it without consensus to do so, this will be escalated to WP:BLPN and you may face sanctions as a result. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:08, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyphoidbomb: Alright, now that you've brought it up? Please tell me EXACTLY why is a reference being removed? The second thing was it was just a one-line mention that he used to TORTURE her, (have not copy-pasted anythiing either) So, please explain where's the issue. Abbasquadir (talk) 16:13, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I explained very clearly above what the problem is: potential defamation. And since you've again restored it, the matter is now at WP:BLPN. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:40, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion

[edit]

These four edits I have reverted.

  1. "Murder" is unfounded.
  2. "a six-page suicide note" was changed to "a six-page letter", which is clear POV forcing. The media called it a suicide note, and we write about what secondary sources say.
  3. The back end of "Khan's mother, Rabia, independently hired British forensics expert Jason Payne-James, who concluded in a 20 September 2016 report that Khan's hanging was staged and the marks on her face and neck indicate it was not simply suicide" was changed to "Jiah Khan did not commit suicide". I can't find where in this source Payne-James concluded that she did not commit suicide. He offered observations and an opinion that Indian forensic examiners didn't consider other possibilities, such as a staged hanging, but I don't see where he definitively concluded that she did not commit suicide. I do see where Mumbai Mirror wrote "it's not a simple case of suicide".
  4. I'm having trouble understanding why the opinion of BJP MP Subramanian Swamy would be relevant here. Does he solve crimes? Was he in charge of the forensic teams? If the answer is no, then someone appears to be using his lofty political status to give undue weight to his personal opinion, perhaps in an effort to sway public opinion. Feels like POV force to me.

Father's nationality

[edit]

An IP changed her father's nationality from Indian American to Pakistani American. While it makes sense since her paternal aunts are Pakistani actors, it conflicts with the cited bollywoodhungama source (non-RS and an interview) which mentions "American Indian". Until we have a RS source, I'm changing it to simply American. Jay 💬 09:28, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bad English

I assume that much of this article has been written by people for whom English is not their first language. There are many sentences that are constructed poorly. I call on someone with good English skills who cares about this subject to go through it.Bob Caldwell CSL (talk) 13:51, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
