Updates from Meeting organisers, President or committee members

  • Marshelec: Work for WANZ has included finalising the 2023 Performance Report that will need to be presented to the AGM, and then submitted to regulator, Charities Services. The report was finally fully signed off today (10 May) so is now ready for the AGM on 21 May.

Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

  • Avocadobabygirl (talk): I've been working a lot on events prep. We're about to restart sessions for staff, with more of a focus on learning skills as professional development. The first will be on referencing, leading in to our 1Lib1Ref event on May 29. In June and July we'll be holding a pair of editathons about research expeditions, building on Ambrosia10's project work. I also presented to Turnbull Library staff about 1Lib1Ref to encourage them to hold their own event, and we're shaping up something in September about Te Maori. Carrying on supporting the research expeditions project in other ways, including creating an infobox template called {{Infobox expedition/Wikidata}}, which pulls values straight from Wikidata. You can see it in use on 1970 Three Kings Islands expedition. I also want to thank Chocmilk03 and Ambrosia10 for their help getting together the item and article for Ben Schrader.
  • Marshelec: I have been making and supporting improvements to Foveaux Strait, after it was nominated for GA by User:Alexeyevitch. It has taken a lot of time, and there is still more to do, but it has been interesting. As usual, this work also opens up opportunities to improve related articles. I have also done some work on National Park articles, including the (GA nominated) Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, and Fiordland National Park. This last one opened up the issue of how best to manage large overlap in content between an article about a region Fiordland and a National Park, when the boundaries of the two are closely similar. Other work has included suggesting areas of improvement for Christchurch, and the establishment of a project page (still need to do this). Part of the motivation was to try and help build momentum for editors in Christchurch (some of whom have joined WANZ recently). One result of my advocacy was the split out (by another editor) of a lengthy section about history into a new article History of Christchurch. I heavily pruned a section of the Christchurch article about the central city, but also added content about the original state of the land in Christchurch (it was mostly a swamp). Lots more to do. Did you know: the Christchurch article receives around 40k pageviews a month !!
  • Einebillion has requested an open release of a dataset on Women photographers in New Zealand from Te Papa for me to upload to Wikidata. They are going through the process to assess whether it's suitable for release. Have also been helping Avocadobabygirl and Stitchbird2 with the Te Papa staff events and professional development in the Wikiverse at work. Mostly been doing administrative President of WANZ work.

Future events

If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
If you're interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact admin @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It's really simple - we promise!

Outstanding Action Points to Progress

  • Otari-Wilton's Bush event ideation and organising We need an organiser! Group agreed to move the dates to autumn. User:Noracrentiss will talk with User:Ambrosia10 about organising resource. WANZ application could easily include an event organiser but we need someone to lead it and shape the agenda of the event. - Next steps? Stitchbird and Ambrosia10 are keen to organise but both are committed up to the middle of August due to Wikimania. Both intend to commit to this after that date.
  • Parliamentary Library The library has had its Wikipedia guidance for staff approved. Any update on support for project? User:Giantflightlessbirds was organising a lifting of the IP address block on editing Wiki projects. Any update?

Good Article / Featured Article Work

  • Group is planning to work on Wellington Botanic Garden article. User:Wainuiomartian has substantially expanded the article and added photos. Anybody have any ideas for further improvement? A picture of the Henry Moore sculpture?

Wiki News - add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of

  • Content: New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. There is also a video on how to add thesis to people's pages. This work is ongoing and could use more editors to help out.

Requests for Edits and other information
