Thanks for keeping me blocked

As I told User:CityOfSilver at User talk:CityOfSilver#I don't want to be unblocked, I am dropping my appeal. I have no desire to deal with User:Feoffer's behavior.

I will also be off Wikipedia for a month or so, likely followed by the process of having my account removed.

Before I request vanishing from a bureaucrat, I would like to say --as a matter of constructive criticism-- the tone of Wikipedia bureaucrats has been insulting and snide and is not a small part of why I want out.

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

AlisonW case request accepted

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/AlisonW. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/AlisonW/Evidence. Please add your evidence by June 30, 2023, which is when the evidence phase closes. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration. Your revert

Re this revert, I didn't notice until after I edited another section for over-capitalization. Can you say which chnages you think were sub-optimal, and which were OK (at least roughly)? Dicklyon (talk) 21:05, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Titles of offices would always be capitalized. "faith, hope, charity" is Just Wrong. You could make a case for lowercasing "Assembly", if you had to, but "grand assembly" would be just as wrong as "house of representatives". SarekOfVulcan (talk) 00:01, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
And per WP:CAPS, Standard or commonly used names of an office are treated as proper names. SarekOfVulcan (talk) 00:14, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
OK, I'll start over and follow MOS:OFFICE carefully. Dicklyon (talk) 01:12, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
Take a look at my latest and let me know if I'm on a better track now. Dicklyon (talk) 01:20, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
Better, but Master Mason, Worthy Advisor, Mother Advisor, Supreme Inspector, and Supreme Deputy should always be capitalized. (If you disagree on Master Mason, try changing it in Freemasonry first and see if you can make it stick.) SarekOfVulcan (talk) 01:30, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
I think "always" ignores the advice at MOS:OFFICE, which says "is not plural, is not preceded by a modifier (including a definite or indefinite article), and is not a reworded description". Are you disagreeing with that, or is there something more special about these Freemasonry terms, or did I just get it wrong? Dicklyon (talk) 04:12, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

I opened a more general discussion at WT:WikiProject Freemasonry#Capitalization. Dicklyon (talk) 04:22, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Would you consider the latest edit under WP Voice. I'm trying to state an important fact without it sounding too critical, as a fact that just happens to be negative. Immelt presided over the most dramatic period in GE's history, something not reflected currently in the article's lead section. Knightoften (talk) 02:45, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Better, but I don't see where that citation references 2/3rd of its assets, which is pretty specific. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 03:07, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
@SarekOfVulcan: Found a better source and added the specific annual reports for coverage. In the original article I posted you had to piece the divestments together; it's the same in the new one but it's more specific, should be clearer. The annual GE reports list the asset shrink/subsidiaries during that period 2007-2017 Knightoften (talk) 20:56, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

The arbitration case Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/AlisonW has been closed, and the final decision is viewable at the case page. The following remedy has been enacted:

  • For failure to meet the conduct standards expected of an administrator, AlisonW's administrative user rights are removed. She may regain them at any time via a successful request for adminship.

Question (I don't know how to react and if this is against wp:policy)

Hello @SarekOfVulcan, I don't want to make it too long, but I have been personnally attacked multiple times on the same controversial article Juan Branco by an SPA (100%), and also an almost SPA (editing mostly this article or schools of the subject like Sciences Po) who both arrived after 2-6 months of inactivity in the sole purpose (it seems) to rollback my contributions (which consisted mainly of wp:translated content from the French B-class rated article). Also, I noticed that two contributors on the same page have an account name beginning and ending with the same letter (D......d) and both containing 8 characters. All that makes a bit much for me and, as I feel like I lost hours of work for nothing, and as I am still quite new here, I am wondering what I can do in this situation ? Can all that already be sanctionned if I report it ? Thanks, Imagritte (talk) 01:35, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

Bar Harbor, Maine

Hi SarekofVulcan,

Besides the "resort" in the very first line of the entry (which I wrote to you about separately), I'm baffled by why you would revert to the older census data when I provided the 2022 census number with the proper footnote. Can you explain what's motivating these reversions?

Thank you,

TEulenspiegel Eulenspiegel23 (talk) 21:51, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

There is no such thing as the 2022 Census. Wikipedia standard practice is to use the actual census numbers as far as possible. SarekOfVulcan (talk) 22:23, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
I see, you're right. It's only an estimate. Thank you for the clarification. Eulenspiegel23 (talk) 22:25, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
And the "resort" issue? Eulenspiegel23 (talk) 22:28, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
Third sentence of the lead says, in effect, "or it's just a town that gets a lot of tourists". You're welcome to start a discussion on the article talk page and see if there's consensus for your change. SarekOfVulcan (talk) 22:58, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

When does a town have to accept the label of "resort town"?

I'm trying to remove "resort" from the opening line describing the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. I think this label does a disservice to the town in multiple ways. Both economically & culturally, Bar Harbor is defined more by its significant research institutions (one of which employs 1,400 locals), its college, fishing community, hospital and schools, than it is by tourism. But, it's also, like many desirable destinations, struggling with a severe housing crisis and overwhelming seasonable tourism. These threaten its year-round community, who can no longer find housing or afford to live here. What I'm trying to say is Bar Harbor is and is struggling to remain More Than a Resort/Tourist Town. Wikipedia choosing to label it a "resort town" when many equally inundated, over-"loved" towns/cities are not so designated seems arbitrary & unfortunate. Eulenspiegel23 (talk) 03:35, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

You'd probably get better results posting this on Talk:Bar Harbor, Maine, as I suggested above. SarekOfVulcan (talk) 18:52, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, still finding my way around. Eulenspiegel23 (talk) 19:19, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

ANI close

Noting that you misspelled my name in your close of the ANI discussion. Also, just wondering, how did you figure out the consensus to be for one year? Not complaining, but just wondering as I don't remember seeing anyone state that they supported it only for a specific amount of time. BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:10, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

My apologies - I looked at the spelling in Jayron's suggestion, and didn't refer back to make sure it was correct. As far as the length of time goes, since it wasn't discussed one way or the other in the survey that I noticed, I felt it was better to have a defined length of time, and that 1 year was the best duration to attempt. If it doesn't work, I would expect that more stringent sanctions would be placed quickly. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 17:42, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. SCB topic ban

FYI, Squared.Circle.Boxing reverted your notice of his GENSEX topic ban with the edit summary Won't affect my editing; won't prevent anything; notches on pitchforks lol.

I asked him if he could clarify whether this was him signaling that he intends to continue editing in the same disruptive manner with no regard for the topic ban, which he reverted with the edit summary Nope, I can not.

Just wanted to note this here, since I have no clue whether noting it at the closed ANI discussion would be appropriate or not. 2600:1700:87D3:3460:EC8D:3C81:53D4:D796 (talk) 23:05, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

I wouldn't phrase it quite the same way, but in any case, drop it. The ban is in place. If there are problematic edits later, that's the time to bring it up. Squared. Circle.Boxing is under no obligation to clarify future edits before they're made. SarekOfVulcan (talk) 23:29, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
