I am currently looking for help (a perl script) to parse and separate red and blue links for various lists at Missing encyclopedic articles. I have made a request at Wikipedia:Computer_help_desk#New_cases, but it has languished for over a week. There was a script that does some of what we need it to do developed by Avar, but it only works on a few of the many lists we are currently working on. Specifically I'm looking for something that would separate and sort a list like this:

  1. Link 1 External search for link 1 Comment about link 1 with link to another article]
    Nested comment about link
    Second nested comment
  • Wrongly nested comment
  1. Link2 Notice space has been removed
  2. Link3] Malformed links with [malformed link
  1. Link4 Renumbering because of space

This is a worst case example. The current script works well, but it evaluates link by link, not line by line and so [comments] about the link would be removed.

See separting reds and blues for more comments.

Re Bluebot + tags

Hi, basically bluebot tags with {{wikify-date|xxx}} or {{stub}} as when it comes across those articles while doing other tasks, most often this is when it is bolding the first occurrance of the title. For a while I had it scanning new pages as well, which was fairly successful, but I don't leave my computer on all the time, and it was tagging sooo many as wikify (many of which would get deleted) that I began to think it was better to just work off database scans, as these tended to be older, and therefore less likely to be copyvios or other candidates for deletion. The criteria for adding a tag used to be calculated from the number of links dived by article length, but I found this doesnt work too well, so now it only tags if there are less than 4 links as well. thanks Martin 10:43, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, it has been my ambition to get every article that needs it to be tagged with {{wikify}}, but there are soo many that it would be too much to do them all in one go, I was aiming to do a few thousand a month. Wikisource inclusion

I noticed you have recently tagged some articles for moving to Wikisource. I wanted to talk to you especially about the splitting off of data from and article and then tagging it for WS. The English Wikisource community has recently decided to exclude all data and reference material which is not attached to a larger work available on Wikisource. The data I remember seeing was some kind of immigration figures. I believe s:Wikisource:What Wikisource includes#Reference material has been partially updated, there is still some disscusion about the details. Basically if we had the entire report that include the immigration data we would accept it, but we are not accepting unaffiliated reference material. The original disscussion can be found at s:Wikisource:Scriptorium/Archives/2006/04#Inclusion of reference data on Wikisource. I poked through my contributions for the past month, and I don't see anything being tagged for Wikisource, but I'll take your word for it. United States immigration statistics was the article I removed the move to wikisource tag from. The history shows you created it and the tag was there in the earliest version. It was not yet moved to WS so I wanted to point it out to you since it seems you thought it did not belong on WP. Category:Articles to be merged

Hi, I saw the sorting work you (your bot actually but hey) did on Category:Articles that need to be wikified. Great, it makes it much nicer this way. Is it also possible to this on Category:Articles to be merged. I just discovered this category today, and boy does it has a backlog. Sorting by month would be helpful there. Categories

The categorization system is having growing pains. There seem to be several different view about what our category system should be; a way to browse, an index of articles, a classification system, and/or a database search tool. Each of these views leads editors to different conclusions about how categories should be populated, and many conflicts result. To deal with these problems, Rick Block and I have been working on a proposal to add the ability to create category intersections. We think our proposal will address these problems and add some very useful new features. We are asking editors and developers concerned with categorizaton problems to take a look. Yet another analysis project that screams "Beland!"

Hi - I've proposed a wikipedia wide project to find and eliminate instances within infobox-style templates of the anti-accessible technique of creating multiple visual rows withn a single row by embedding matching HTML breaks in two (or more) adjacent columns in a table, please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Usability#Infobox accessibility issue. So far, no one has signed up or in any way acknowledged that this is a problem worth pursuing (screw them blind folks - who needs em!). In any event, if you could whip up a little analysis program to find likely instances (difficult to be exact, but perhaps references to templates with multiple parameters whose values include an HTML break - being exact requires either looking at the rendered HTML or interpreting the template) it might help folks realize the magnitude of the problem. I'm pretty sure this is very widespread, and I've verified with a blind wikipedia user that it is a problem. Pearle request

Hey Beland,

I was looking at Pearle, and it said you can generate reports showing the tree structure of categories, including articles. Does this include a report of how long the article in the categories are?

I ask because I used to use CatScan all the time. I spend a lot of time working on Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs, which has a huge amount of short stub articles. CatScan was really useful in identifying and listing stub articles, and I liked being able to start with the shortest, most incomplete articles first.

However, CatScan hasn't worked in many months (since April 11th!), and it appears permanantly offline on en.wikipedia. Is it possible for you to use Pearle to come up with a list of the shortest articles in Category:Dinosaurs, preferably sorted by size? The category depth would have to be about six, because there are around six levels of depth. Can it be done? I can use pop-ups, but it takes hours because there are between 1,200 and 2,000 dinosaur articles; I've only sorted letter A, and am not relishing the thought of B thru Z.

I noticed you said you have very little time at present, so feel free to tell me to go climb a tree. Would it be feasible to have Pearle (or a copy thereof, maybe I could run it) do for {{unreferenced}} what is currently done for {{cleanup}}? The documentation says it is able to go back through old contributions to the article to discern when the tag was added. This would be a major help with what is being talked about here. Search engine access to commons

It's a known problem, but not exactly intentional. Search engines fail to index our pages properly, because the URLs end in things like "jpg", which they tend to think are images rather than image pages in our case. PNA run dropped "Expert attention needed" entries

When Pearle was given the PNA sorting update in early November (much needed - thanks), I noticed that Pearle seems not to be producing any "Expert attention needed" list entries -- all the PNA pages I've seen have 0 entries. For instance page Tenant-in-chief still has an {expert} tag but is no longer in any list on Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Business.

Now I see that someone else has commented on this problem. As PNA is the topic-sorted access path, this "Expert attention needed" list is one of the more important article lists to have on PNA.

A question about a Perl script...

There's a script that User:Cedars used to run that's written in Perl I think that used to maintain the main WP:GA page. The problem is, Cedars just left suddenly after some fair use on publicity images thing, and now I don't think anyone knows how to use it :/. I was told you might be able to help tell us how the script works, at first I thought it was just something that you put in that file everyone has that loads when you log in that can change things, but just reading how he's commented his code, it looks like this is some indepedent application that's moving around files and needing some odd file opening protocols. Its all User:Cedars/gaauto.pl, and the thing is, it's about the only reliable and easy way we have to keep the GA list properly mantained. If there's anything you can tell us about how to use this script, I know i'd appreciate it, and although I can't speak for all the other GA editors i'm mostly certain they'd be thankful as well :). Maps for Wikipedia 1.0

Hi, I saw your posting on the core topics COTF a while ago, but finally got time to reply. I am interested in this idea, especially since I reviewed all of the country and global city articles for Version 0.5. Theoretically it should be struck from the nominations list as it is not a core topic article, but I think you're right that these maps are "core" material for our CD releases. If you can outline exactly how people can help with this, and exactly what is needed, I'll vote for it myself, and maybe we can work on it. The description here is probably fine for people at the map project, but I think I would like to see a couple of map examples of what you think is good, and a couple that are not good enough. Luas

Hi Beland,

I saw your post on the talk page for Luas - not sure if you're still watching that page or not. You were asking about a map that showed the layout of the stops and where they were in Dublin, instead of just floating in white space. I'm from Dublin so I said I'd give it a shot but I can't seem to find any maps that are free to use for this sort of thing. If you had any idea where we could source a free map of Dublin I could mark the stop locations. Beyond that, it's not looking good - for some reason there don't seem to be any proper maps with stops marked on them on any of the Luas-related websites. Hi, I tried running your bot code on de.wikipedia, but I have problems with the bot logging in. If I just set the cookies you describe on your page, the server doesn't recognize me in the first place. I do get to the edit page if I also set dewiki_session, but it complains about session data being lost when the bot tries to save the page. open access disam

Unfortunately the reasonable-sounding change you made on the "open access" disam page completely lost contact with the main open access article--open access publishing is a subsidiary article. This has happened a few times, and clearly indicates the need for a name change to eliminate he confusion (at one point the confusion became great enough as to lose both history and content. I've proposed a name change to Open access movement, but I want to hear what the other eds. think--there are many links to redo. Status of Wikireason -- other projects

Hi Beland. Wikireason is "in hibernation" due to lack of participation. I've been offering advice to the admin of Chains of Reason, which seems to have similar goals to Wikireason and I think has a better chance of developing a sustainable community. If you are still interested, please check it out. You may also be interested in Debateopedia--which is more focused on documenting public debates, and less focused on developing logical arguments. New (hopefully simple request

I've noticed lots of instances where people leave out spaces after links, parenthesis, and formatting syntax - e.g. they will write things like: It was a largecreature(possibly a dinosauror a giant wombat)which lived in the cavernof woe.

Can you pull together a page of all instances in article space of:

  1. A text character followed immediately by an open parens or bracket: x( or x[
  2. A close parens followed immediately by a text character: )x
  3. A text character followed immediately by italic or bolding syntax, which is in turn followed immediately by another text character: xx or x'x

LA Map

Hello beland, I created this map but when i upload it the quality of it suffers immensely. I have tried to upload 2 versions, one with names and one without. The one with no names acquires black rectangles at certain places and the one with names has the names distorted. Using Pearle on another GNU FDL wiki

I work on the Congresspedia wiki and we'd like to use it to automate the migration of open tasks and our "in the news" headlines from the various portals to our main page and community portal. Hello again, Conor! (We ran into each other in person at the Boston Wikimania.) There is Pearle code posted at User:Pearle/pearle.pl, but it is from 2005, and almost certainly doesn't work. Not even the more up-to-date code I am actually running the bot with is currently writing to the wiki, and I've determined that the best solution is to completely rewrite the bot using a Perl library for Mediawiki bots.[1] I'm actually planning to do that the week of July 30. In what sort of timeframe were you looking at doing this migration? If you don't have any Perl programmers chomping at the bit to get this done, I may have time to produce a variant for Congresspedia that week. I started yesterday with the code you have posted; I've gotten as far as mangling it to make it more portable, and was about to try running it when I found this note.
