PlayStation sells lower than Xbox 360?

The article says that "In the worldwide marketplace, PlayStation 3 is currently behind its competitor systems, the Xbox 360 and the Wii, both overall and in monthly sales." In my opinion this statment is controversial (in case of xbox).

According to vgchartz.com PS3 sold better in last 5 weeks than Xbox 360. It is true that since PS3 launch (roughly last 8 months) Xbox sold more units than PS3 (about 5 million compared with PS3 4 millions) but when we align launches and compare how much PS3 had sold in its first 8 months with how much Xbox 360 had sold in its first 8 months we get almost the same results: Xbox 360 - 4.138 mln units, PS3 - 4.108 mln (it can be easily seen in World->Hardware chart when we "align lanunches"). This still gives Xbox 360 a little advantage but it will probably change when last week results will be counted.

In my opinion the statment should be changed to sth like this: "In the worldwide marketplace, PlayStation 3 is currently behind its competitor systems, the Xbox 360 and the Wii, in overall sales and behind Wii in monthly sales. Monthly sales of Xbox 360 and PS3 are comparable". _________________________ Your argument was perfectly valid until you mentioned Vgchartz. Sorry.

Most likely higher also thanks to a percentage of owners who had to re-buy their Xbox when they were part of the lucky 33% rather then repair it. Denzelio 21:53, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Top Selling Game?

It says Smackdown vs Raw 2008, which isn't out yet so that can't be right, and the source for that says it's Resistance. Someone should change that.

Acording to [2] which I think is a good sorce haha says that NCAA® Football 08 is the top game. -- Vdub49 01:54, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The list of "Top Games" at [3] is just a list of games that are selling the most copies right now, which does not necessarily make it the "Top-selling Game" entirely. If you think about it, it's unlikely that NCAA 08, or any other game for that matter, could sell more copies in a month and a half than Resistance could in nine months. -- Operation fluffy bunny 08:04, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That source shouldn't be used to cite NCAA Football 08 as the best selling PS3 game, since the list does not even number the games based on total sales ranking. --Silver Edge 08:02, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thats true... one month compared to nine months. Is this supposed to be monthly top seller or all around top seller? -- Vdub49 16:34, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I changed Resistance from 2 million to 1.7 million based on a VGCgartz.com and then someone reverted it because they said that it's not reliable. How is it unreliable exactly? How would the AP know better than a site dedicated to video game charts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jordinho (talkcontribs) 15:56, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

VG Chartz has projections of video game hardware and software sales numbers, so it does not have actual sales figures. "A site dedicated to video game charts" does not necessarily make it reliable, or more reliable than the Associated Press. --Silver Edge 05:22, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Should Amazon.com sales percentage be removed?

In the article it states the following:

"According to the Amazon.com sales rankings, the price cut has increased PlayStation 3 sales by 3200%, far surpassing Sony's 200% target."

This is both misleading and inaccurate. Amazon.com admits on their site that sales rank is not an indicator of total sales volume increase. Rather it is the percentage that an item has moved in the rankings[4]. The two are quite different. As such, the sales increase at a single online retailer is not reliable as a source of an overall sales increase.

PS3 0.2% failure rate

http://news.spong.com/article/13491?cb=993

I think this should be included, especially in light of the 33% XBOX 360 failure rate.

Maybe it should go in the hardware section, or the hardware page? John.n-irl 13:55, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that it should be put in the hardware section as it is hardware related (Truth jay 20:42, 24 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

This is a negative article slanted against the PS3

This article reflects the enormous level of FUD against the PS3. I've been following the console wars for a while, and I do find the level of hostile fanboyism and misinformation from all sides to be rather unreasonable and detestable. Sections of this article read like they were written by fanboys of other consoles who go out of their way to discredit the PS3. Information and arguments which favor the PS3 seem to be mysteriously omitted. Negatives seem to be amplified to the limits of what Wikipedia might let slide. I would caution any reader to take this article with a grain of salt, as it is part of the battleground for the raging console wars, and it's encylopedic integrity is questionable. The article is very actively editted by its subject's detractors. 24.23.231.54 17:58, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article has several parts that are either out of date or plain wrong. First and foremost it says that the PS3 is currently in 3rd in sales and Marketshare, that is incorrect, it is now in a strong second for Sales and only in 3rd in Marketshare in the United States, 2nd in Japan and 2nd in Europe.

As for the comments above, you have fun sending your 360s back to Microsoft to get them replaced for that Red Ring boys. 208.45.168.113 18:09, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

lol... i HAVE A WII... (duh)

Yes, this article is written in a way that paints the PS3 in an unfavorable light and does not follow NPOV. 75.21.103.254 14:25, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you sound like a fanboy of the PS3 who still hasn't caught on that it isn't as good as either the XBOX 360 or the Nintendo Wii. What you call a "negative slant" is the truth; the PS3 was not as good a console. I was actually going to suggest that it is painted in to good a view, especially in the reception section of the article. Popular culture condemns the PS3 as being too expensive, having poor controllers that haven't changed since the original PlayStation, and a lack of good games. Stop whining. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.23.251.224 (talk) 23:23, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gameplay capturable in HD via HDMI?

I'd just like to know if the BlackMagic Intensity HDMI capture card can capture digitally gameplay footage in HD off of the PS3. --Jack Zhang 18:05, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt it since HD output requires HDCP which means it's encrypted. If a HDMI card is made properly not to get into legal trouble it can't capture protected content. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.181.10.145 (talk) 17:36, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of Infrared IR Interface

Sony marketed the PS3 as the "Center" of your entertainment center. However, they did not include an IR interface. Anyone who as an entertainment center, worth mentioning, has already bought a universal remote control which highly likely doesn't have bluetooth support. Now, what was Sony really thinking? Is this really an oversight? Or, does Sony have a bigger plan in mind? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 206.248.139.85 (talk) 02:41:25, August 19, 2007 (UTC)

Clearly Bluetooth technology is far superior to Infrared, i have never heard such a comment about infrared for a ps3 before, although using a remote to point at the Wii for instance can be annoying at times. Being able to use both the Blutooth Ps3 controller and Blu-Ray remote from anywhere even other rooms while not pointing at a certain point is much better. So Bluetooth is a obvious benefit while Infrared is more of an redundant technology. Denzelio 21:56, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uh... compatibility with existing hardware, and not forcing people to buy a separate remote just to control a single device (thus defeating the very purpose of a 'universal remote') is hardly redundant. Do bluetooth-controlled televisions even exist yet? If so, they certainly aren't prevalent. Obviously, a bluetooth-only solution is not superior to one which actually acknowledges the existence of, um, the television to which the device is attached.
However... that said... I've yet to read any coverage of people being significantly upset over the 'lack' of IR support for the PS3. I seem to recall reading an incredibly brief comment about it on IGN or some such site, but not an actual criticism. As such, I don't see how it would really apply to the article. Now, if people start marching down the streets chanting "We want IR support for our PS3's!", and it's covered on CNN, then you better believe it'll find its way into the article. :D Bladestorm 23:07, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I bought one the other day, before opening it, found out about the lack of IR. It was such a turn off, that I returned the thing the next day. I am not lazy, but the PS3 made it to my house for the Blu-Ray and I couldn't see myself juggling two remotes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.248.139.85 (talk) 01:42, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In a few years I would think the old IR Universal remotes would be replaced with BlueTooth Universal Remotes, all that needs to happen first is Televisions to adopt the BlueTooth Technology as the Television is always the Primary remote in a household and the others would then follow ie. Stereo, Dvd>Blu-ray Player..... So unless a later slimline version of a PS3 has a IR sensor and or by that time if BlueTooth Universal Remotes exist i doubt the PS3 will support IR Remotes. Contradiction in sales figures??

"In the worldwide marketplace, PlayStation 3 is currently behind its competitor systems, the Xbox 360 and the Wii... ...likewise the PS3 sold 2.5 times more units in June than the Xbox 360." Is it just me, but does the first part say that the PS3 is behind the Xbox, but the second part claims that it is ahead? Someone less lazy than me might want to fix this up. 59.167.93.124 13:24, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I Believe it's refering to te fact that it's total sales figures are lower, but the monthly ones are higher, i can understand both existing at once.ReZerO 05:31, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HDMI Support

Under Hardware, the article says HDMI is available on all models. It is actually only available on the 80 gb model, not the 60 gb model. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.30.54.210 (talk) 09:04, August 28, 2007 (UTC)

it's on all Models, even the 20 gb model, i have a 60 gb model and my PS3 has it. [5] there is a diagram providing the information for you. note the things that only come on some models are marked with an (*).ReZerO 05:27, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I second that. HDMI is standard on all models of the PlayStation 3, ever since the beginning, unlike the Xbox 360, which only started phasing them in recently, and even then, the Xbox 360 only uses HDMI 1.2, whereas the PlayStation 3 has the latest HDMI 1.3.(Myscrnnm 20:15, 19 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

A Love Letter to the PS3

In the publicity and reception section section of this article, I count twice more positive reception paragraphs, and two negative ones, one being extremely small. I think this is very POV. I noticed a lot of negative publicity missing, for example the whole violent episodes that occurred during the opening night. This section should be rewritten so that it's not POV. C. Pineda 03:07, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the violence has little or nothing to do with the console. It's a news story about avarice. How exactly did the PS3 cause wealth disparity and the will to break the law for personal gain? There isn't a need for "negative" views on a random neutral consumer item. There is note some liked it, some didn't. The machine itself isn't the devil. The company behind it screwed up a lot with PR but the machine itself does not kill babies. Request we portray it more negatively is painting yourself in a bad light. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.75.33.118 (talk) 10:32, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, cut the whole reception and publicity section, just leave the features of the PS3, that way this article will be more neutral. Plus the reception and publicity could change in the future, so no point in trying to conclude something that is inconclusive. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.10.155.39 (talk) 09:39, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PS3 80GB can play PSone and PS2 games.

I went to youtube in recently and there is a guy who said that 80GB version can play PSone and PS2 games well but here is the proof but that person is NOT me! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-nOTzV24ag Rickengothic 10:19 , 31 August 2007 (UTC)

The 80GB PS3 does not have the Emotion Engine or the Graphics Synthesizer, but it can still play games through emulation. True, it can not play as much games this way, but it can still play a good amount. There is no such thing as a PlayStation 3 unit that has no backward compatability. Closetoeuphoria 04:11, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The same number that function well upscaled will also function on the 80gb version. The upscaler is a emulator and does it in software. It seems to be around 80% without problems. I think Sony's site has an official list.

The new 40 is said to not have Backwords Compatability. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.70.144.73 (talk) 16:23, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Does a single PS3 console support up to 7 players?

Well, I saw that the SIXAXIS controllers have a total of 4 LEDs, indicating that the maximum number of players that can use the console at any given time is four, not seven. Just that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.16.114.33 (talk) 23:44, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Player 5's controller has the 1 and 4 lit up at the same time, player 6 has 2 and 4 lit up, and player 7 has 3 and 4 lit up. Also, don't forget to sign your posts. Closetoeuphoria 04:08, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's true, provided you don't have a bluetooth headset on, the PS3 can support 7 bluetooth devices at once, so if you have a keyboard and a microphone that are both bluetooth then you can only have 5 controllers etc -- Vdub49 20:40, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PS3 to PC lcd monitor

The PS3 requires for all games and movies a HDCP compliant monitor/TV. As a alternative you can play games on 480i (ntsc) format with obviously less resolution. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.181.10.145 (talk) 18:32, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rumours of a recall?

I've heard rumours that Sony is considering recalling the PS3 due to negative reactions and lack of sales, pricing, glitches, etc etc. Judging by this article I'm supposing this isn't true? --Marshmello 22:55, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

That rumor is 100% not true. Sony has said that they plan the PlayStation 3 to have a life span of at least ten years. They would not recall the system. Closetoeuphoria 01:43, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You mean all of them??? uhh I seriously doubt that. -- Vdub49 00:31, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

the ps3 has some hotly anticipated games, Sales are inline with the other HD system, prices have been cut and the failure rate is rather low. So... yea, either someone lied to you or they mistook the phase out of the 60gig for the cheaper 80gig's to be a recall. 207.210.20.237 07:36, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

why on earth would any company plan a recall for a device that is not defective or dangerous. We should remove this section because it's such a blatantly useless post. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.75.33.118 (talk) 10:36, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's more likely the Xbox 360 would be recalled in Japan then the PS3 be recalled in any region as no sales in any region have been as low as Japan 360 Sales, and the fact a console with 33% failure rate is left on the shelves not recalled and or marked down is disturbing. Still i think only a Xbox fan would come up with a rediculous rumour of a PS3 recall. Denzelio 23:10, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

a recall for what? that it's so perfectly built that they want it back for the pricey components so they could sell it to Microsoft for their 2billion dollar faulty console? Markthemac 01:25, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Standards MB vs MiB

What's with referring to MB in some sections and MiB in others? It looks terrible, and is confusing. Stick with KB, MB, GB, or the "binary" prefix KiB, MiB, etc. My preference, for the record, is KB, MB and GB. Sjhill 18:37, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, keep it simple, I think KB, MB and GB are easier for people to follow -- Vdub49 22:24, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It should be standardized in the article, however the differences is because people use "Gigabytes" while computers use "Gibibytes". The size difference between the two explains why you "lose" 7% of your hard drive's storage. Useight 03:12, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfair Statement

It says in the aritcle that in most cases the PS2 is outselling the PS3, but it fails to mention that the PS2 is also outselling the Xbox 360. 75.52.170.140 20:17, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is an encyclopedic entry, not a fanboy blog to compare the merits of the PS3 to the Xbox 360. A listing of the PS2's sales performance compared to the Xbox 360's is outside the scope of the article. You should post your complaint in the Xbox 360 article's discussion if you feel that it is relevant to the Xbox 360. And please remember to sign your comments. HDMI 1.3 Bitstream Controversy?

Why does this not even get a passing mention in the article? A lot of people bought the PS3 thinking it could do bitstream output of Blu-ray's DTS-HD MA audio, but when receivers finally rolled out that could take the input we found out that the PS3 had left off this apparently optional feature of HDMI 1.3. This is a pretty big controversy in the world of Blu, I think it deserves mention. --Ray andrew 13:52, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thats the first I've heard of it, this is not "the world of Blu" this is a ps3 artical. wheres your source? And if you have one where does it say that they won't include it in a firmware upgrade since it's "optional"? -- Vdub49 21:05, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well this article is about the PS3 and playing Blu-ray discs is one of its primary functions. Sources are forums and blogs over the last several months (do a search), but all say that the HDMI output chip in the PS3 is not capable of passing bitstream for DTS-HD or TrueHD. Many people are quite upset about this as none knew that this was an optional part of the HDMI 1.3 spec until recently. --Ray andrew 21:28, 11 September 2007 (UTC) Link: http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/05/08/no-dolby-truehd-or-dts-hd-for-ps3-owners/ --Ray andrew 21:35, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your article was posted four months ago, and I haven't heard anything about it in the mainstream news. And you should read the article again, it does do True HD, just not DTS-HD. --Bakarocket 05:51, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
it doesn't do DTS-HD YET, sony has commented on this that they might upgrade if there is enough interest in it. Markthemac 02:23, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Read the article again, the PS3 does support decoding True HD and passing it as LPCM (and this topic has NOTHING to do with that), but it cannot pass the undecoded bitstream of TrueHD or DTS-HD (which is the real problem) via HDMI for external decoding. --Ray andrew 03:47, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
how about we look at it again shall we? TrueHD thing is crossed out, implying that they were wrong. this isn't even a credible source. -- Vdub49 03:50, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not saying that they are a reliable source (yea they crossed it out because they were lambasted by people tat did not know the difference between passing LPCM and bitstream). Find another they are plentiful with a google search. One of the reasons for the frustration among users is that even the supposedly reliable PC World got it wrong a year ago

The minutiae of the PS3's audio settings are even less clear. Neither of the two BD Audio Output format options--Linear PCM (the default) and Bitstream--is explained. I had to go to Sony directly to find out.

The PS3's default is to convert recognized audio streams to Linear PCM, an uncompressed audio format, for output via HDMI or digital optical audio. This can be advantageous if, for example, you're outputting to an HDTV that has built-in speakers and decodes only Linear PCM. If you're using your own home theater receiver, though, you'll want to use the Bitstream setting: In this mode, the PS3 passes the audio "bitstream"--be it Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, or DTS-HD--through to your receiver via the HDMI or optical connector; from there, the receiver decodes the audio and outputs it to your speakers.

Seems pretty clear to me, but it was a lie.--Ray andrew 05:25, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What???? that makes no sense, how can it be pretty clear, but be a lie. -- Vdub49 22:26, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The quote from the article clearly states that Sony confirmed that the PS3 would be able to pass bitstream for TrueHD and DTS-HD, but that was a lie the PS3 can't do it. The best it can do is decode TrueHD and pass it as LPCM, but it cant do anything with DTS-HD. So maybe I should have said that they blatantly mislead people. --Ray andrew 00:55, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Look. I have an idea. Once you determine if there actually is a controversy or not, and once you have sources that back up the controversy and the alleged lying, then you can put it in. No one has objection to truth, just unsubstantiated rumours. -- Bakarocket 13:29, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is nonsense, the PS3 can output both TrueHD and DTS:MA just fine. Where the confusion (or deliberate FUD) comes from, is the HDMI 1.3 chipset used in the PS3 (Silicon Image Vastline 9132), is a lower number that the regular set top HMDI chip (Silicon Image Vastline 9134), and therefore assumptions (or deliberate FUD), says that it must be inferior, because it's part number is lower (the actual fact is, they are identical, aside from a couple of specific functions that the PS3 can do onboard, and not need dedicatated silicon to perform.--195.75.83.25 15:11, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Bull, there is no way to currently get DTS-HD out of the PS3, and the only way it will happen is to update the PS3 to decode DTS-HD internally. It cannot transport the undecoded DTS-HD bitstream over HDMI (or TrueHD bitstream for that matter). --Ray andrew 03:10, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS3 outputs undecoded DTS-HD,DTS:MA and TrueHD just fine. Perhaps you don't know how to setup your system? Perhaps you have incompaible components on the HDMI chain. If you have the right components, the PS3 outputs the formats undecoded, just fine, all I see if lots of speculation and rumour that it can't (from I suspect XBots and their HDMI 1.2).--81.174.171.21 11:01, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Give me one reliable source that says this works then. --Ray andrew 14:13, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
i've added lacking infos about 7.1ch in the article, didn't knew there was an ongoing thread here. source is the official ps3 manual, check chart notes in page 21. the manual infos are about the 2006 original firmware. there is a selectable HDMI audio output option in current firmware 1.93 user's guide: bitstream/LPCM but this is about 5.1 DTS & DD as "HD" is not mentioned. I would like to note that the Playstation 3 article in Wikipedia has a few minor errors with respect to past-present tense usage. For instance, the article says that "Sony have...", however the correct usage of the past-present would be to say that "Sony has...". I understand that this a minor correction, but it would help to clean it up.

Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.234.149.2 (talk) 17:25, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the wikipedia standards on English variation. The phenomenon you are talking about is perfectly acceptable in all regional variants of English except American. If the article in general uses American English, please go ahead and change it because you may be the only person on the planet who minds. If it uses anything but American English, it shall stay as it is. --Bakarocket 12:25, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Continued Vandalism

Some nerd with no life keeps vandalizing the page by replacing the Top-Selling game. Instead of Resistance: Fall of Man, they replace it with NCAA Football 08. I know for a fact that a football game that was only recently released didn't sell that many copies to become the top selling game. They have done this on more than one occasion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ShinraiTS4 (talkcontribs) 23:40, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of infomation and Infomation that should be listed

the information regarding negative comments made by Todd Howard from Bethesda Softworks (http://www.fragland.net/news.php?page=1&id=15404) have been completely removed for this page as has the region coding infomation about blu-ray titles not working on a ps3 that have been purchased from another region!

DRM information should be included into the ps3 page stating that ppl need a HDCP screen to view content via the hdmi output of the ps3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCP

Spelling Error

In the line:

"European Imaging And Sound Assioation awarded the PS3, top honours for its media centre capabilities."

Association is spelled wrong. If this article wasn't locked (which, I might add defeats the purpose of Wikipedia) this issue would be resolved, but it's not.

dont take it the wrong way, but I think we'd rather leave it locked so it's not vandalized; but I'll fix it. -- Vdub49 01:55, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This link here : http://playstation.com.au/news/dualshock3.jhtml Shows many games that will use Dual Shock 3. As well as many which are already released and will obtain Dual Shock 3 through a future "Software Update" (Firmware Update). Anyway this is worthy of mention on the PS3 Article Page, as these titles in particular Motor Storm, Resistance: Fall of Man and Warhawk have been some of the best sellers and will obtain Dual Shock 3 at a future point. New PS3 Model Undergoes Testing - PS3 Model CECHG01

"Adding more fuel to the rumor that Sony is planning to release a new PlayStation 3 model soon, a new FCC filing surfaced today showing that the company has submitted a new unit to the agency for testing."

80GB PS3 Model - CECH01

60GB PS3 Model - CECHA01

NEW PS3 Model - CECHG01

CECHG01 - is Rumored to contain a 40GB HDD possibly may even be Slimline but doubtful it will be Slimline.

http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/823/823425p1.html Denzelio 23:23, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a more complete list that can be deducted from this article [6]:
  • CECHA01 NTSC 60GB
  • CECHB01 NTSC 20GB
  • CECHC01 PAL 60GB
  • CECHD01 PAL 20GB
  • CECHE01 NTSC 80GB
  • CECHF01 ditto?
  • CECHG01 new type, the rumoured 40GB model.
I suggest to include this list (once verified) in the main article, for instance in the table with specs. The Seventh Taylor 06:16, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Would be better to include these Model Names in the 'PlayStation 3 launch — Release data and pricing', Similar to the way the Model Names for Each Country with price and Model Name are shown under the PS2 Article, If the American pricing is removed for every Country, their will be more then enough room to place in the Model Names, It is also odd why there is even American Conversions shown next to every country and price.. is it clearly not needed as we don't all live in America? Denzelio 20:59, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime, can anyone explain the difference between the CECHE01 and CECHF01 types? Supposedly both are 80GB models for NTSC territories. The Seventh Taylor 16:34, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Page must be protected.

I'm having a feeling that these Xbox 360 fanboys are going to vandal this Playstation 3 site, please more protection! HweeWieng September 28 2007

Considering that the page has been doing just fine thus far, almost a year into the console's life, I think the current protections are enough. -FrYGuY 08:01, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Study

I read on ign a couple of weeks ago about a study by a financial group I think, saying that the ps3 will outsell the 360 by 2009 and by 2012 have the most software sales. Does anyone have a link to that and if you do, can you put it in the publicity section.--Playstationdude 16:33, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is a possiblity not fact if it did happen then it could be included but that could go either way. if put in some of the studys saying that the ps3 is dommed should be there to avoid being bias —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.237.228.133 (talk) 02:00, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Elimination of Emotion Engine

Many reports, including ones quotes in the main article, indicate that the initial PS3 units contained the Emotion Engine (EE) of PlayStation 2. Now, PS2 contained two major processors, the EE and the Graphics Synthesizer (GS) which, after each having gone through some silicon shrink steps individually, got combined onto a single die. This single EE+GS chip powers the later PS2 units (likely from the time of the PStwo redesign). I would expect this chip (EE plus GS) to have been embedded in the early PS3s -- not just the EE. Can anyone confirm this? The Seventh Taylor 21:11, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feed

Was checking out g4 website and on the feed they have more proof that the $400, 40gb PS3 is coming. They even think the release date is Oct. 28. I'm not saying that we should add this officially on the article yet, but I'm getting goosebumps!--Playstationdude 01:15, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The service is having several difficulties being anywhere near as popular as the Xbox Live system.

ps2 cpu backwards compatiblity and ps2 gpu backwards compatiblatiy

why does it say on the 60GB pal version there is no ps2 cpu backwards compatiblity but there is ps2 gpu backwards compatiiblity? isnt the emotion engine and graphics systhsizer all in one chip? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.218.246.100 (talk) 19:37, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Total Removal of PS2 Backwards Compatability

http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/825/825213p1.html

The New 40GB PS3 will not allow for any Backwards Compatibility at all and is very surprising. As at first Sony decided to remove PS2 Compatibility chips in order to save with Production costs, and instead chose to use 'Emulation Software', which as a result leads additional time being taken to further include PS2 tittles under Emulation, rather then straight 100% compatibility through Dedicated PS2 Chips. Yet the New Console has neither the PS2 Chip nor Emulation Software, So this may just be an insight into later Versions of the PS3 and or a later Slim-line version at a later date ofcourse. Sony had stated that they didn't want to focus on just updating 'PS2 Emulation Software', and this system that was a result of 'Extensive Research' may just show that with out demand for PS2 support later versions may not include 'PS2 Software Emulation' in future systems yet to be Released. One of the strong points for the PS2 was the Backwards Compatibility, The PS2 was the first system to offer Backwards Compatibility, and the new 40GB PS3 is now the first to remove Backwards Support for Modern day Consoles. So for the new model you may just have to sacrifice your PS2 collection or hold on to your PS2 console for the foreseeable future. In basic this PS3 model is now the first current Next-Gen Console not to include backwards Compatibility. Denzelio 23:40, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone finish updating the ps3 page so that this information is included. Time to update the Retail Configuration PS3 Console Table

With the Addition of the new 40GB Model the 'Retail Configuration' Table is getting Confusing, Can someone either mention next to or under the 20GB & 60GB that they are now 'DISCONTINUED' or give them a Color to Signify this as their obviously isn't 4 different types of PS3 Consoles available in Retail Stores. Why does it say "glossy finish"? Seems bit weird to include that as its the same on all models(the demo models were different i know but they never saw a release). John.n-irl 18:54, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Matte finish on 40GB model?? This is only a rumor started by a site. SONY never confirm anything about "matte finish" on Playstation 3 40GB. In official UK site of Playstation there is a photo of the 40GB Playstation 3 box and its a black glossy finish cover. Jack Tretton's 1,200 Dollar Deal

So, I know Jack Tretton bet 1200 dollars that no PS3 on store shelves would last more than 5 minutes without being bought, as it says in the main article. Could someone please add that the guys from Penny Arcade, as well as Handsome Tom and Stuttering Craig from Screwattack both tried to get Jack Tretton to pay them something like 50 K USD because they hung around a Gamestop or something and watched a stack of PS3s not get sold for more than two hours? I believe that this is on the article for Screwattack itself on Wikipedia.

They did not receive their money, and Jack Tretton never even responded.

40 GB Model and backwards compatibility

The main Wiki Article is stating that "The 40 GB model does not feature any backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 titles".

This is an unfounded rumor which is displayed as fact and should be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.14.21.166 (talk) 19:22, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Straight from the Sony Computer Entertainment website link that is already referenced in the article: "The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas)." http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/071006e.html Please do not remove the comments of others from talk pages. The PlayStation 3 competes with ..... Nintendo's Wii

Isn't that disputed - including by both Sony and Nintendo themselves?!?!? Also, it is akin to stating that the Lamborghini Gallardo competes with the Ford Focus..... 86.17.211.191 00:50, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, that is like saying a Razr is competing against Nokia N95. Since both are mainly used for a single service, they are competing. -- ReyBrujo 01:27, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unreal Tournament 3 PS3 Exclusive?

The article states "It was also revealed that the first-person shooter Unreal Tournament 3 will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3 in 2007". This is obviously outdated and I don't think it was ever true. The PC version will be out next month and the PS3 and 360 versions will come out some time later. 202.89.191.212 01:27, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

UT3 is a PS3 Console exclusive. Developer has stated, they have not even started on a 360 version of UT3, and the 360 won't be capable of the UT3 (both limitations of DVD drive, and Microsoft DLC restrictions being cited as the causes). Don't expect to se UT3 on anything other than PC and PS3 for the next year or so.

chart colour nonsense

why are the usb 4x and 2x cells the same colour? it doesn't make sense. yellow colour is supposed to be used to show "partial" difference with the full spec. like hard or soft emulation, now with everything green there is no difference at all. it gets confusing to newcomers.
