Please advise Article on Mo's Restaurants

Aboutmovies,

thanks for your earlier feedback on Rogue Ales I just created an article on Mo's restaurants and it was up for about a nanosecond before being tagged as spam <wow>. Since you are also list on WP:WPOR as being a participant in Oregon business related articles I wondered if you had a moment to review this article (and advise on how to have it added to Oregon projects, I'm not sure if I just add the tag or if it needs to be done another way in fact I'm pretty confused all the way around).

thanks in advance (in Salem) Awotter 07:04, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help it was almost faster than the tag! I did not know about the + symbol thanks for the tip. I also added another Wiki Project tag as you advised. Will work on making the language more NPOV. I grew up an Army brat and first visited Mo's when my folks were in grad school at the U of O almost the same time when Mo's West opened at Otter Rock, they remain my favorite place to visit, so when I came across the info about Niemi researching the Rogue article I wanted to do a good article on them. BTW why are we both up so late (or early)? Awotter —Preceding comment was added at 08:21, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article on Ronald D. Mehl

Hi Aboutmovies,

I'm a new Wikipedia editor and am confused about the notability issue on this article. One jounalistic reference is the Christian News Northwest article (included in links); the Benediction prayer to open a session of the US Senate as guest Chaplain was indicative of his notability (not sure that any other Oregonians have performed that duty recently); the dedication of the gymnasium at Life Pacific College; an award winning author in Christian literature, including a book used as the theme for the National Day of Prayer; and the info from International Foursquare identifying Ron as one of the prominent pastors that helped turn attendance around for the denomination as a whole (article link on current history of Foursquare). He is referenced in at least 3 other Wikipedia articles of which I am aware. I also researched other Pastors in Wikipedia, including J. Vernon McGee and Jack Hayford, which I believe are in the same category as Pastor Mehl. Believe me I'm not trying to be 'cantakerous' but am confused as to how to better address this. Is it a style issue since I didn't specifically reference the above info and just included in the links? Thanks for listening, I'm definitely hoping you can help me.JWLang 05:12, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help and guidance on this article! JWLang 20:41, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I just created a stub for United States v. Oregon, summarizing the case that acknowledged fishing rights for native Americans. But after doing so, I realized there are other cases by the same name, specifically a couple from 1935 listed on this page: List of United States Supreme Court cases, volume 295

Not knowing anything about the naming conventions of SC cases, I'm not sure how to proceed. Can you offer any insight?

By the way- I'm sorry I haven't participated in your collaborations yet, which I think are great idea. I've been very busy off-wiki. But I'll try to jump in soon! -Pete 03:23, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks much for sorting through that! (And thanks to Katr too - since I'm sure you'll catch it here, and I'm runnin out the door…) -Pete 05:26, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As you probably noticed, I started my gnomical work on Mr. McNary. I learned a bit about those Breyman girls--they sure did get around. I was thinking of mentioning that Jessie's sister Minnie married Rueben P. Boise, Jr., but maybe that's too off topic? One of these days the Breyman Bros. ought to have an article; they were real movers and shakers of their day. Oh, and I'm trying to figure out if McNary, Oregon had anything to do with this branch of the McNarys. I think not, but I haven't decided for sure. More tomorrow. Katr67 04:55, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All done, as far as I can tell. Katr67 18:07, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, did you feel anything more was needed for GA? If so I'll see if I can dig anything up. Thanks again. Aboutmovies 18:10, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It seemed like a couple things were unclear (like the two separate terms thing, despite it looking like he served continually from 1917 to whenever, which I took out of the lead) but my brain is also unclear so I'll take another look after lunch. I'm also dying to know what the heck the Salem Fruit Union was. Katr67 19:08, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll see about expanding upon the two seperate stints. As to the SFU, my guess was a trade group, maybe even a distant predecessor to NorPac. Aboutmovies 19:15, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The clarification is good--I clarified it a bit further. I think it's just about ready to let the GA folk have at it. The things I see that could be expanded upon besides the fruit thing (BTW, the Salem History source says he was an orchardist (of filberts)) are the fact that he had to buy back his family's house (why did they lose it in the first place?) and I read that he ran out of money and that's why he had to leave Stanford--that's a good rags-to-riches sort of angle. In some places the dates are a little out of sequence--mostly the personal stuff--I think it makes sense that way, but it might be a quibble for the GA folks. You also might clarify the difference between public and political office in the beginning of the Politics section. (public vs. elected maybe?) Finally, I've got to wonder why he was in Florida when he died. For FA, go into a lot more detail about his Senate career--he was there forever, so there's lots of material. (Of Mark Hatifield: "He became the longest-serving U.S. senator from Oregon in 1993, surpassing the previous record set by Charles McNary." [1]) I read somewhere (I forget where, sorry) that he was considered the most important (influential/powerful/???) Senator out of Oregon in the first half of the 20th Century. I ran across this today too: "However, those who have served in the Senate are surely most proud of him as the man who stopped Franklin Delano Roosevelt from packing the Supreme Court in 1937. Since the Court was preventing him from enacting certain New Deal programs, FDR (with the aid of his legislative pointman, Senator Robinson) declared that he was going to appoint six new members to the bench who would tip the judicial scales in his direction. The Constitution dictates that the number of Justices be nine, and Roosevelt's action was thus clearly illegal. More central to the issue, however, is the fact that the powers of confirmation for any presidential appointee, including Supreme Court Justices, is an express privilege of the Senate. McNary's efforts to stop this unconstitutional action was a classic example of a check on Executive Branch, and more significantly a triumphant reinforcement of Senate authority."[2] good stuff. Good luck! Katr67 21:54, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. It's interesting to note that the Willkie-McNary ticket didn't carry Oregon... Katr67 21:57, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations, almost! Katr67 01:30, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm missed the above earlier. Now that it is GA I'll see what can be added. Though the long quote seems dubious since here they don't talk about McNary at all and it is perfectly Constitutional for Congress to change the number of seats (its been done on numerous occasions). But congrats to you too! Aboutmovies 02:04, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stinkin' badges

I'm too lazy to do DYKs (though I did nominate Vortex I for one) but I was wondering to which GAs you felt I've contributed significantly. If Scientizzle ever talks me into going for adminship, well, they look at stuff like that. Way back when, when I did an editor review, I'd innocently put a little FA star by New Carissa on my brag list because I'd helped copy edit it when it was up for FA review. Well, someone said that could be seen as taking undeserved credit for something and that the folks a Rfa would freak out about that. ::shrug:: So do you think I've earned any of those nifty green boxes? Don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings if you underrate copy editing like everybody else does. ;) BTW, OSC is steadily moving up the proofreading request list so I bet it gets done pretty soon. We should GA nom it after that. Katr67 04:34, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

At this point I would say Waller Hall, Katherine Ann Power, and Willamette University College of Law. On each of those you expended a fair amount of time in both copyediting and some review/additions. At least those from what I've been involved with, I don't know if you worked on others. Good to hear about OSC. I know you've worked on McNary, let me know when you are done so we can nom that too. Aboutmovies 04:55, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm crap at coords if I can't copy them from PSU/USPS. Do you think you could improve ones for Eugene Depot? They're currently off to the right somewhere, unlike Eugene itself... Katr67 16:21, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done. The easiest way to get them is to use WikiMapia. Zoom in, put the white + that shows the center of the map on the location, then the URL will show the exact coordinates. If you then need to convert to 45'34"4 W, search for the coordinates at Google Map and it will display both in a callout box. Someday I'll mention that we should have coordinates where ever possible, since then the locations will show up in Google Earth, which gives more exposure to the articles, and hopefully more minons participants. Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge

Do you think the stub tag can come off Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge? It seems like it is beyond WP:STUB status. —EncMstr 02:51, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yah, its a solid start now. In the future, if you plan on a DYK I'd leave the stub tags off until after it passes. Some of those in charge at DYK go by the tag instead of what the article actually is. But great job, it looks like with your 2, Sprkee (or Spanish Sprkee), and mine Oregon will be dominating DYK this week. Aboutmovies 02:56, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll look into Erastus. The Beers gravestone has the look of being erected long after his death, probably by the DAR, similar to the marker of George Gay near Hopewell. The Lees' stones are similar (I'll upload them onto commons in a few minutes)--you can see where the original ones were broken off. Beers, Parrish and the Lees are all together in the absurdly named "Diamond Square" section of the cemetery. The DAR might not have known what they were talking about. Yet another reason not to join. (I actually qualify.) I also would have no idea how to act at a cotillion... I'll see if I can find out anything. About Beers, not cotillions. Katr67 03:23, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Columbia Sportswear: Chairwoman

I apologize, I cited the wrong link in my edit.

Below is an excerpt of 'One Tough Mother' by Gert Boyle herself from Google Books (page 157). It highlights her dislike for the term 'chairwoman' and serves as the company 'chairman'.

http://books.google.com/books?id=QIE1VOXlrhwC&pg=PA157&vq=chairwoman&dq=gert+boyle&sig=MeXWdVUskeJbYOq8xN_r-UJq2Ak

Please consider revising the article based upon this.

Mattfblue 04:45, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If the article was Gert Boyle, no problem. But the article is the company, and the company says chairwoman. If she was so against the title she could have her web people change the site, afterall she is in charge, thus there seems to be implicit approval of chairwoman in that instance. But the company's 10Q financial statement says chairman. So it seems the company doesn't even know. How about we go with the gender netrual "chairperson" until Gert fires the web people for getting it wrong? Aboutmovies 06:34, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't necessarily endorse splitting it off, but as long as it was, I figured I would try to clean up the mess--thanks for finishing up. So is that part of GA criteria to remove lists from articles? If not, I agree the split probably wasn't needed. Katr67 20:33, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know it is not in the critera, just misguided personal preference. Along with moving the pictures around, which the preference for images is not all on the right, the editor only made cosmetic changes. The main problem with splitting off the list is that it could easily be AFD'd. At some point I even thought of making a seperate Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice article that would have the list, but I didn't see enough content to justify a seperate article. Neil Goldschmidt

Hi, I noticed your comments on the talk page about Neil Goldschmidt. I'd encourage you to stay invovled in the discussion if you have time as you see to have a pretty balanced opinion. The anon ip is currently unwilling to discuss changes before asking them, which is frustrating at best. Whoever the anon ip is, seems deadset on inserting their own POV into the article. Anyway, I'd appreciate if you'd take a look at what's going on. Davidpdx 01:34, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Digimarc edit

I'm a little confused why you added the notability box to the Digimarc Corporation article. The company controls over 60% of the US drivers license market. That seems pretty notable to me. 28bytes 05:15, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you didn't take offense at my question. I am indeed familiar with the notability guidelines. I'm sorry if you took it personally that I had a question about your edit. It just seemed odd to me that, in a week where the company is getting a great deal of press coverage, you put a notability box on the article instead of linking to the coverage. 28bytes 16:54, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake, you are correct, you tagged it in September, not October. If you still feel that the company's not notable, you just keep that box right on there. Sorry to have wasted your precious time with my stupid questions. 28bytes 18:30, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added some stuff to Putnam since you assessed it. He was quite the mover and shaker in Oregon for a few years. Do you think he deserves a "mid"? I'm not invested either way--I never heard of the dude before, except in connection with that homewrecker, Amelia Earhart... COTW award

Hey, thank you very much for the COTW award for Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. However, I would argue that EngineerScotty made some much more substantive contributions than I did, and was there early showing leadership in how the article should develop and showing real buy-in to the larger COTW effort. All I did, really, was add some nice visuals late in the game, and mostly on parts relating to Washington rather than Oregon. Also, Columbia River was just reviewed for GA, and the reviewer made some excellent observations. Unfortunately it looks like a pretty big job to meet all the demands before the GA hold expires. I wonder if you might consider making that a COTW next week. I know it's a last minute request, so if you have other plans that's fine of course, but if you're able to fit it in I think it would be a good one. -Pete 21:45, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Admin

Thank you for discussing this with me, I would first like to inform you that this comment was not specifically directed at you but the many editors who feel the same way as you. Second, my poor use of words has led you astray, I do not think cadets are just police officers minus the gun, and I will admit it was a poor use of words. A Police cadet is a sworn member of the Law Enforcement Community, thought limited to what they can and can not do. My view of what a police Cadet is has not changed sense this RfA, and will never change as it is my career and i know what i can and can not do, I understand the great ethical and honesty requirements of working as a police officer and a cadet, so to answer your question, no i do not still think cadets are cops without guns, cause that is not what i thought to begin with, i know what i am. I beleive i have also owned up to many mistakes here on wikipedia and in real life, and have done so multiple times through out my RfA. Though we may differ on our views, i still thank you for your comment, Cheers! Tiptoety 01:34, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting Keeley Dorsey: Second Nomination

What is your and Katr's interest in this article? Please explain. The first nomination was close and too close to the death event. It stands to reason the article would not survive a second nomination, because Wikipedia is not a memorial and this article is not sufficiently sourced.

So, why not help with the formatting, if you have the best interests of fairness here?Ryoung122 07:48, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As they say, you attract more flies with sugar than vinegar. Start behaving properly and people will be less likely to return the attacks. Not to mention the AFD will fail, you really need to read WP:BIO. Notability is not that the person scored 1 touchdown, it is they are worthy of note, and that is shown by substantial coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the source. The death there made national news, thus there will be plenty of sources to back up the notability claim. Same thing with your now desire to delete the Wood article, there are multiple, reliable sources that are independent of the subject, and more can be added if need be (what is it three newspapers and a book?). You really need to seperate the real world from Wikipedia when it comes to what notability is defined as. Wikipedia has a different standard.
As to fairness, will you appologize and retract incorrect accusations that you have made against several editors? When you do that, then, and only then can you talk about the "interests of fairness" in regards to anything related to you on Wikipedia. Aboutmovies 08:01, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: You misspelled 'apologize.' And I disagree with your assertion that a second AFD would fail. First off, Wikipedia is WP:NOT#MEMORIAL. Second, the subject is not notable 'aside from coverage of his death' which is, by definition, discountable.
In regards to Mary Ramsey Wood, it could easily be argued that the subject is a LOCALFAME person and doesn't meet the criteria for notability.
In regards to apologies, I'm still waiting for one from you regarding the Mary Ramsey Wood case, where I turned out to be correct. I also find it a 'personal vendetta' for you to chime in on my own AFD, which, though it appears to be going down this 'election cycle', I'm still only 33 and circumstances may change.
In the Keeley Dorsey dispute, I did not ask you to help; there are plenty of other editors out there. However, you chose, once again, to oppose a move I made. Not surprising.
In regards to Mary Ramsey Wood:
Look, ok, the woman was 97 or 98, her only 'claim to fame' turned out not to be true. Long-forgotten and in only local newspapers or regional books, there is a legitimate reason to believe that the article might not survive an AFD. Ryoung122 09:16, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Robert: It's not "your" article, it's Wikipedia's article about you. If you can keep that in mind, I think that will help matters considerably. Regarding your threat- if you truly think the Wood article shouldn't be here, and you're not just trying to make a point, just nominate it, make your case, see where the chips fall. Nobody's stopping you. -Pete 16:53, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
RY, you didn't ask for help? Really? So what exactly is "So, why not help with the formatting" then? It has the word help in it, and its on my talk page. As to Dorsey, the coverage is not a memorial, it is about what the media believed to be a worthy topic for coverage. Again, Wikipedia does not equal the real world. If a topic is covered by reliable sources, at a certain depth, then they are notable for Wikipedia purposes and Dorsey passes that test. But, feel free to nominate it again, along with the Wood. But again, you still don't get what every editor that was involved with the Wood article gets except you (hint, hint, you might want to think about that) is that it was not how old she was (for the umpteenth time I don't care how old she was), but the method in which the information you wanted to add was presented in the article. Again as I believe a lot of other editors have told you, we have a lot of guidelines and rules for editing on Wikipedia, and you refuse to abide by them. As Pete said, feel free to list it for AFD, but I caution you, it is simply a waste of time the article meets WP:BIO. It doesn't matter if she was or was not 120, the fact is reliable sources covered her, thus notable. In Wikipedia notability does not equal fame, which it actually says that under WP:NOTE. And you seem to confuse the two. And as to local newspapers, and local books please point me to where in WP:RS it says that? Oh, wait it doesn't. Please read what Wikipedia has to offer in guidelines and rules, we do not simply go off of your opinion on matters such as these, we use the already developed by consensus guidelines and rules and policies. Lastly, as to the autobio on you, that's right you could at some point be notable, I never said you couldn't, in fact read through the first AFD and I said "autobiography does not meet WP:BIO. Could it? Maybe, but as it is now, it does not." and also "OK, out of all of those sources added above, only the one that is a re-print from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution qualifies as significant coverage. It is actually about Robert Young. But I don't think one is enough. Do you have more like that? Had it been an entire biography in book form, that would be enough, but not one article in the local/regional paper." So, yes if you get more coverage in reliable sources, then yes you will be notable by Wikipedia standards. It appears you are well known in your field, but that is not notable for Wikipedia. Again, real world, Wikipedia, two different things. Call your friends at all the newspapers who have used you as a source and have them write an article on you. Really, is it that difficult to call them and have them interview you and write a piece on you? According to you, you are world famous, so one would think they would be beating down your door to write an article on you. Once that happens I'm sure other editors would be willing write a biography on you. I would even do it, granted again you make amends where necessary as pointed out by myself and others. But until you begin editing properly, I and many editors (i.e. see all the admins at the ANI) will continually push you to edit/contribute properly. If you take that as harassment, so be it, since nobody can seem to get you to comprehend the issues. Aboutmovies (talk)

Sanity Check

OK, so I swear I haven't been hitting the brownies, but I also swear some of the Oregon history templates sported the color combo of History Sign Brown and Oregon Template Periwinkle. But not anymore?! I was going to suggest that those colors clashed a bit, but now I can't figure out which one(s) they were. I see we share a birthday. Just dropping by to send a note/question regarding the ongoing improvement of my first Wikipedia article. Are internet references the only references allowed on Wikipedia? The subject of my article has had plenty of publicity in the past, but most of it was in print, and I'm having trouble locating the 'big-ticket' references considered ideal with the standard search engines. As to the specific notability of a contributing party in award winning media, I would assert that music, (and sound) though not credited with top billing, is a crucial part of the entertainment and advertising industries, and worthy of notation. To overuse an example: without the music of John Williams, Jaws, Star Wars, ET and Raiders of the Lost Ark would not have been what they were. People in circles of production are most aware of the importance that musical composition and sound play in the success of a project. Since notability is subjective, and the importance of relevant references is limited to the media consumption of those making the determination, I would think that more time would be needed to allow those with access to that media to contribute to the article. A couple of weeks seems insufficient to build an article from a collective of industry insiders, such as those the subject would serve. Thank you for the interaction. I am encouraged to have well intentioned and more experienced Wikipedians helping me shape this article. Studiomanager (talk) 23:07, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
