Upcoming national competitions

National pageants are expected to be held on these dates.[45][46][47]

Returning states and territories

No Shows

  •  Northern Mariana Islands - Stellar Marianas president Laila Y. Boyer announced that the contest would be pushed to a later date to select a delegate for Miss Universe 2009.[1]
  •  Panama - The Miss Panama contest was cancelled in 2005 after a decline in the ratings. A smaller version of the contest was held in 2006 with 9 contestants and was not televised. The winner (Giselle Bissot) attended Miss World and was supposed to compete in Miss Universe, backing out due to studies. So the 4th runner-up of the 2005 contest was 'handpicked' and competed in Miss Universe 2007. The pageant is no longer part of the network's programming and there are no plans of holding it again.

Replacements

  •  France - Suggestive photos of Valérie Bègue appeared in the press shortly after she was crowned Miss France. As a result of breaking the rules against taking compromising pictures, Bègue is banned from competing for France in international pageants. [55] The French committee will be sending the second runner-up, Miss Pays de Loire, Laura Tanguy, to represent France at Miss Universe because the first runner-up, Miss New Caledonia Vahinerii Requillart, wants to continue to study. [56] [57] [58]
  •  Sweden - Isabel Lestapier Winqvist, decided to resign from the title, after failing to communicate with the Swedish sponsors. She was replaced by her first runner-up.

Notes

  •  Norway - Starting in 2008, only one winner will be elected Frøken Norge (Miss Norway) and she will attend both the Miss Universe and Miss World contests.
  •  Dominican Republic - Marianne Cruz, The reigning Miss Dominican Republic Universe 2008, is also the reigning Miss Continente Americano 2007/Miss American Continent 2007. The Pageant was held in Ecuador.
  •  Belize - Tanisha Vernon, Miss Belize Universe 2008, Felicita Arzu and Maria Jeffery, held a press conference revolt against Pageants Belize Ltd. and its director, Margaret Johnson on February 27, 2008. Johnson has constantly mistreated the ladies, didn't allow them to the press, financial commitments were not met by the company and prizes were not given. Tanisha fought for the principle on how things should be conducted. The conference was held at Radisson Hotel in Belize City with the press and a packed audience including Ms. Johnson.
