What up? I've been on a wikibreak lately. To clear up recent rumors, I'm not retiring, YAY! I've just been enjoying off-wiki activities such as hanging with friends, video game tourneys, so on. I will try to get on here more often than I have though :). Burner0718 JibbaJabba! 02:40, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hopefully soon. I'm checking out OSU, Temple, Georgia, Tenn, UNC, Kentucky, and LSU. Which one would you suggest? I could use all the help I could get :). Next year is my Senior year in high school. Woooooow! BTW, I like your userpage. Burner0718 JibbaJabba! 02:53, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, whoops. What new challenge did you complete? --SharkfaceT/C 04:06, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, ok! I see it now. And just for clarification, what five barnstars were you awarded? --SharkfaceT/C 04:30, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You are fully qualified. Congratulations and thank you for your service.
The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
For undertaking and completing five separate challenges for the Award Center, I, Sharkface217, hereby award you this Tireless Contributor barnstar. Thank you for all your service to the project and to Wikipedia as a whole. I look forward to your future contributions. --SharkfaceT/C 04:43, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. And thank you for the kind and unexpected barnstar. It's good to see my work with WP:AWC is appreciated. And yes, I will be devoting much less time to the Award Center in the future, as I am returning to article creation/improvement and am discovering the joys of vandal-fighting. Again, thank you. --SharkfaceT/C 04:57, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Misfire via VP, when you undid, you accidentally readded some vandalism, so when I reverted with VP, the warn hit you instead of the vandal.--Finalnight (talk) 06:33, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, was clicking through my RC log too fast trying to keep up with the vandals. Your my first misfire on a registered user ever, lol.--Finalnight (talk) 06:38, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You bet, sometimes it can be quite a challenge depending on the nature of an article or the edit, thanks for tips though, i appreciate it.--Finalnight (talk) 06:43, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nah, most people occasionally fire at the wrong person. It happens, it's no big deal. It happened to me. As long as they document (by leaving a note on your talk page) that it was an accident, no harm is done. - Philippe 15:00, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of "Ared Arzumanian"

Hi Ry,

I am confused as to why you have edited/deleted the entry "Ared Arzumanian" under notable Canadian-Armenians and Armenians of Canadian descent.

Please explain.

Regards,

Aries1000

Providing wrong information, in order to promote yourself or your brother/husband/boyfriend isn't good wikipedia ethic. The names Arzumanian Tutunjian, Varjabed or others that were removed do not go under "notable Canadians", because then we would have 20,000 names listed (as many Canadian- Armenians as possible). Even a very simple google search (in your case about 40 lucky entries) of those names shows that they are far away from being listed alongside such notables as Egoyan, Nahabedian, Khanjian, Bayrakdarian, first Armenian MP Assadourian etc. Take your self-promoting somewhere else. About a revert

What's wrong with this edit that you felt you need to roll it back? Metros (talk) 22:12, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just came here to ask the same thing (actually, RyRy didn't "roll back" the edit, he "undid" the edit, which is a bit different). Either way, I just readded the espn link. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 22:15, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Metros, you mentioned on Talk:Justin Masterson that prospects sites are not reliable sources, right? And I thought that was a prospect site. Did I read it wrong?--RyRy5 (talk) 22:17, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Espn's website is in no way close to the Redsoxprospects site. Espn is a reliabe, professional website. The other is a fan site. Metros (talk) 22:20, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Reverted edits by..." is rollback. An undo would say "Undid reversion..." Metros (talk) 22:19, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, Metros, I did miss that. RyRy, you shouldn't use "rollback" except for "obvious vandalism". An IP that is adding an external source is not an obvious vandal, therefore, you should not have used the Rollback button to perform that revert. (and, after reviewing the revert itself, you shouldn't have reverted at all, it was a legitimate addition of an independent, reliable source, as far as I can tell). Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 22:22, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I must have read Metros's comment on Talk:Justin Masterson in a different way. I didn't know that fan sites and ESPN are different kinds of reliable and non-reliable sources. I also didn't warn the IP since it wasn't vandalism. I understand that I should only revert vandalism. But I have one question for metros. Why do you sometimes revert edits on your talkpage that is not vandalism and it is just a simple comment?--RyRy5 (talk) 22:26, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A quick fire guide to reliable sources (don't quote me on this, it's way simplified)(but hopefully it helps).
  • Sites like those noted at Talk:Justin Masterson are unreliable because they are forums where ANYONE can go and write whatever they like. See WP:SPS.
  • Sites like ESPN are reliable because they employ people who know what they're doing.
  • Generally, an easy way to get an idea of the reliability of a source is to look at the source's article—eg. ESPN is clearly a well known quality source, while Red Sox Nation says it's a fansite (which isn't a valid source) (for this ref on the Masterson article). If there is no article, there's more chance that it's not a reliable source, but as always, you should use your best judgement. This isn't always right, but it's a good start (especially on less controversial stuff like sports articles).

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me about sources or whatever. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 00:59, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback taken away

Because of this, your rollback rights have been removed again. This was not clear vandalism. You, yourself, have even admitted to that (since that's why you didn't warn the IP user). Rollback is only to be used for obvious vandalistic edits. Metros (talk) 22:33, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, despite your positive and well meaning improvements, I'm obliged to agree with Metros here. Don't be too discouraged, Ry, there are many ways you can continue to contribute to Wiki without Rollback (in fact, I think I've only used rollback like 5 times since I've been here, I personally don't even like it). Cheers, Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 22:34, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, I think that you should not ask anyone or reapply for rollback rights for at least another month. You've had it taken away twice now and that's just in 3 weeks. Please do not beg users for it again like you did in an attempt to get it back recently. Metros (talk) 22:38, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but I still have one question for metros. Why do you sometimes revert edits on your talkpage that is not vandalism and it is just a simple comment?--RyRy5 (talk) 22:40, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You've got better things to worry about than what I do. Metros (talk) 22:41, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that comment just made my face go :| I know that admins are usually fairly condescending but that was just ridiculous. -- Naerii 22:50, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry you feel that way. Metros (talk) 22:58, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Steve. - Philippe 22:47, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Steve as well, but Metros' condescending, superior, attitude is the most inappropriate way to discuss matters I have ever seen. When ^demon said that many admins are elitist and treat editors without the bit like they're inferior, he wasn't kidding. Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 23:57, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am also disappointed with Metros' comment in this case. It certainly doesn't set a good example. - Philippe 00:01, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, for this I think that Metros' adminship should be revoked. Admins are given wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much leeway and this has got to stop. I do agree that the rollbacking should have been revoked and we should draw the line here. Editorofthewiki 00:22, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. There is nothing here that justifies removing adminship, and to even suggest so is a bit dramatic, I think. Metros exhibited bad manners, but that's it. - Philippe 00:26, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Uh, yeah, I have to agree with Philippe here. To suggest an administrator's rights should be taken away for one comment that you find to be uncivil is an overreaction. Metros (talk) 00:35, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Admin rights removed? Er, while I find Metros' words very inappropriate, I don't think it warrants anything like that. Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 02:49, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disappointed in you

Ryan, I'm very disappointed in this: [1]. We have dispute resolution procedures; you have a series of coaches, both informal and formal, that you could have gone to, and you still chose to inflame a volatile situation. This is particularly disappointing given that I stuck my neck out for you on ANI today. This sort of drama is exactly the sort of thing that makes people forget the positive progress you've made. - Philippe 00:43, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikibreak

Just a question. Are you really going on a Wikibreak? If so, how long will it be. Cheers, Steve Crossin (talk) (anon talk) 01:32, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just want to think things through. I've got a lot on my mind. Maybe a few days. I will proabably be on a semi-break. I don't even know if I want to take one. Please use 'Speedy Delete' tags with care

Hello RyRy, you seem to have a lot on your plate today, but I wanted to alert you to a problem with your use of 'Speedy Delete' tags, as this is not the first time it's happened with your edits. Please hold off putting them on articles that have literally just been written, especially in subject areas with which you are unfamiliar. For example, I just rescued this one here. First of all, the tag was inappropriate because the article did assert notability. The subject was the founder of the American Mensa. But apart from that, you have to give editors time to work on an article.

Slapping on a 'speedy delete' after only an hour, is not helpful, can be very discouraging to new editors, and means that Wikipedia loses a potentially useful article, especially if an admin is not paying attention when they go through the day's collection of 'speedy deletes' (it happens, trust me.) Many new articles look very unpromising at first, take a lot of work to get right, need to have references found, etc. They need time, and they need the collaboration of more than one editor. For example, take a look at Aureliano in Palmira now and compare it to this rather dire beginning a month earlier.

Wikipedia will not self-destruct if an article of doubtful notability stays up for a few days.;-) It's much better to tag a new article like that with {{notability}}. Return a week later and if nothing has happened, consider adding Prod instead. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 01:43, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Jackie Robinson

Not even close. Too many one-sentence paragraphs; choppy prose; refs without any formatting (i.e. no titles, access dates, date of publishing, publishers, authors) and a lot of MOS issues. I'll take a more in-depth look at it later. Sorry if this discourages you; if you want help, I could provide some, though I'll be pretty busy over the next month. Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 03:10, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions: Merge short sections, prosify the "awards and recognition" section at the end. Format refs. Get rid of "cultural references" section. Move the career batting statistics to the end. Make the lead shorter. Link full dates, don't link years by themselves. Put footnotes after punctuation, not before. I already fixed some other MOS issues. Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 21:31, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I failed its current GAN to give you time to work on the article. Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 22:05, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Be careful with reverts

I know it's kind of old now, and we all make simple mistakes, but just in case this hasn't been brought to your attention yet, be careful when reverting, so that things like this don't happen again. That IP probably got scared off the site when a respected, registered, well-known user reinstated major WP:BLP violations that he had removed, and warned him for his efforts. This would have given the IP a negative impression of the site - what if that IP was a reporter, or other member of the press? It could have been a big thing, and the text restored was possibly worse than that in the Seigenthaler incident. I've removed the template from his talk page, but still, the damage would have been done, without apology. Again, it's obviously accidental and good-faith on your part, and we all make mistakes (especially when seeing big, red thousands in our watchlists), but it's probably best to take a few extra seconds to view the revision you're about to undo when it comes to BLP articles. At this point, I'm not sure I'd have the time to finish things up with you, as I'll probably be going on an extended wikibreak starting in mid-to-late May. I'll probably only just barely manage to finish up with Eoag as it is. I've been talking with Steve recently, though, and it looks like he's getting a good program set up for you. I know he's a very competent Wikipedian, and there's plenty of others around who will be able to help you if you need it. If you've got a question and Steve isn't around, feel free to ask me, but I'm afraid I'm not really able to officially adopt you just now. Sorry. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:05, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's way too short. An article should be a minimum of 1,500 characters, excluding lists, tables, references, and infoboxes. You'll need to expand it considerably within the next few days to meet that. As for other improvements, you really need to find some references that aren't related to the foundation. A source is not considered reliable if it has a relation to the subject, and DYK will not accept your "hook" unless it is backed up by a reliable source. It also reads as slightly promotional - you may want to try to work on the tone of the article somewhat to work on that (one thing in particular would be to refer to Jeter by his last name throughout). Hope that helps some. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:28, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Editor review

I have to say. That was the longest review I have ever seen. I thanks you for your time. I will have to take all your comments and suggestions. 1.) I am taking a break in taging articles. 2.) I understand that I waited too shortly for an editor review but I didn't know that you have to wait so very long. 3.) I have slowed down and have started looking diffs to see if it is vandalism. Actually, today, I almost reverted an edit but looked at it more carefully and noticed it wasn't vandalism. So I didn't revert it. 4.) If you haven't noticed, I stopped closing AfD's. 5.) I understand that Adminship isn't a special reward, but just a no big deal of getting some extra tools to use to help protect wikipedia. 6.) I rarely get stressed so much that I retire. If I do get stressed out I will probably go on a few day wikibreak.

Anyway. I will take your suggestions and keep up woth my adoption. Cheers.--RyRy5 (talkReview) 23:58, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem, you're welcome!
1.) That's good, a bit of time learning the policy and looking at the debates about it at WT:CSD should help you a bit.
2.) About the waiting time from the last one, that's not really a concern but some editors might think that someone's editing doesn't change in a matter of a few weeks. However, I believe yours is improving, and will continue to. I don't agree with User:Friday's assertion that you are acting as though you want attention. I believe you want to improve and do the best you can for Wikipedia.
3.) Good idea, it is always best to the check the diff before you revert it. Most IP edits are good (fixing typos), so we should always be careful not to revert them.
4.) When/if you ever start closing them again, make sure you follow WP:DPR#NAC.
5.) Yes, and I believe if you improve your work at AfD and CSD, and continue reporting vandals at AIV, you will be able to be trusted to have the tools. Remember quality not quantity.
6.) I'm glad you have a good positive attitude and I believe you can shine as an editor :) Keep up the adoption with Steve and have fun editing! Best regards, EJF (talk) 09:51, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If the user has vandalized beforehand, and just reverted one of his latest edits, give a stronger warning than uw-selfrevert (especially if they've been warned). And thanks for the adminship anniversary banner. · AndonicO Engage. 01:52, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Meh, I doubt anyone won't understand. Maybe next time I need to make an edit to the page I'll fix it. · AndonicO Engage. 01:59, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: No More Walks in the Wood

It's not an album. It a song in the album named Long Road Out of Eden. Why do you want to move it? Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 02:40, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a good sig. How is mine? About the article... yes, according to this, you did wikify it somewhat. I could still use some effort, though. How did you notice No More Walks in the Wood, by the way? Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 02:48, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and thank you for the message. If you check the history for the article, you will notice that I created a stub with no POV, and an anon user added the non-wikified, POV language. I may try to clean it up a bit if time permits. Best regards. Jogurney (talk) 03:00, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage Design?

Hi RyRy5,

Could you possibly re-design my userpage for me?

Please please please please!

Thanks,

BG7 21:28, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

erm... i'd like it to fit in with my sig, and also be made up of subpages, as it is at the moment.
if I put some randome ideas and sections down on the current one, can you re-arrange them, put them onto sub-pages make it look nice etc?
thanks, it's really appreciated!
BG7 22:04, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, ok, thanks!
Please fit it in when you have time, i'm not desperate!
BG7 22:09, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Erm... what about blue to fit in with my username? But a slightly lighter shade, perhaps
light blue/cyan
?
Thanks,
BG7 22:23, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... perhaps it would be possible to have a bit more of an organised page, with boxes etc? (A bit like yours, but different if you get what i mean!). Colours would be blue/silver(grey)? Also, do you think that tabs or a toolbar would work better? I'm also going to change the default title. BG7 00:17, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Erm yes please, but with the different colour schemes? Thanks! BG7 00:38, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

reset

Thanks sooooooo much! One problem though - the edit links take me to the main page! To add this to my other pages do I just copy and paste, editing here and there?

Thanks,

BG7 01:29, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok no problems!
Prize... yes you can have one (I was always going to give you one ;)) but what to give... i'll get back to you!
One last "issue" - I can't put tables into the zones, or at least i don't think I can!
Do I just C+P to spread it across my userspace?
Thanks,
BG7 01:37, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeh I get ya!
Thanks a lot!
BG7 01:49, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
RyRy,
I've just made some more changes - could you possibly just check them and let me know? I'm signing off now BTW!
Thanks,
BG7 02:46, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I figured it out!

I don't know what to say, so I'll let my page say it for me. Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 23:43, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be back... I've got to do something. I'll answer all those greivancies later. Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 00:01, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I won't be editing as much as I was, though. And thank you, as well as others, for showing me that I do help. Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 01:56, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I assumed that. Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 02:09, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redesigning other userspages

While this is a nice thing to do for others, remember that we are actually writing an encylopedia. Wikipedia is not myspace. Focus on writing articles for now, and your adoption. Cheers, Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 00:56, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know Steve, I see this as a positive. RyRy has been "improving" userpages for other editors, including at least one admin. While it isn't exactly "building" the encyc, it is definitely appreciated to have an editor share his/her talents where they are needed. I support this latest endeavor of RyRy's. It's a long standing Wikiproject of volunteers that have a knack for layout/design/etc. I'd much rather see RyRy answering the call of other users than creating his own subpages. It's all a matter of perspective. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 01:01, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok Thanks !
