Bournemouth University is a university in and around the large south coast town of Bournemouth, UK (although its main campus is actually situated in neighbouring Poole). It has several well respected (John Kimble, 1999) departments including The School of Health and Social Care, The School of Services Management, The Business School, School of Design, Engineering & Computing and the Media School,[2] recognised as the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice.[3] In 2009 the University will have a four star training hotel for students within the School of Services Management, it will be the first in the UK.
As a university well known for its focus on professional courses, Bournemouth regards research as a vital component for underpinning a high-quality curriculum and for maximising the University's contribution to the regional and national economies. The University has a variety of specialist research groups including The Market Research Group.[4] The university's heraldic motto is Discere Mutari Est (To Learn is to Change).
History
- Bournemouth Municipal College
- 1970s Bournemouth College of Technology
- September 1976 Dorset Institute of Higher Education
- 1990 Bournemouth Polytechnic
- November 27 1992 Bournemouth University
Campuses
Bournemouth University has two campuses: Talbot Campus and Lansdowne Campus.
Talbot Campus is situated in Poole, on the boundary with Bournemouth. It is where the main University buildings are located, including the students' union and the main library. There is also a doctor's surgery, Dylan's and The Loft bars, student refectory, Uni shop, Barclays Bank and Waterstones situated on campus.
Lansdowne Campus is just outside Bournemouth's town centre, with the University buildings located around Christchurch Road and Oxford Road. Unlike Talbot, Lansdowne is not a self-contained campus.
The fact that the main campus is located in Poole, a port town only slightly smaller than Bournemouth in terms of population, has prompted a discussion that the institution's name could be changed to the more accurate University of Dorset instead. However, this is problematic considering that, despite remaining in the ceremonial county of Dorset, both Poole and Bournemouth are now unitary authorities outside the local government auspices of Dorset County Council.
