History

It is one of the largest upazillas of Bangladesh with an area of 444.72 sq km. Manirampur is a close nested community where the Hindus and Muslims are independent but living in harmony. It is situated 12 miles from the District town.

POLITICAL HISTORY

Previous Members of parliament (MP) were: 1973- Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya (AL), 1979- Afsar Siddiqui , 1986- Mufti Wakkas (JP) , 1991- Tipu Sultan (AL), 1996- Tipu Sultan (AL), 2001- Mufti Wakkas (Jamat-e- Ulamai Islam), 2008- Tipu Sultan (AL). Current Upazilla Chairman (2009): Swapon Kumar Bhattyacharya. Current Monirampur Municipality Mayor: Shaheed Iqbal So far, this Upazilla has produced one Minister- Deputy Minister of Relegious Affairs: Mufti Wakkas during Gen Ershad.

Freedom fighters

During 1971, more than 25 freedom fighters scarificed their lives from this upazilla. Shaheed Fazlul Karim is one of them from Gopalpur village.

Geography

Monirampur is located at 23°01′00″N 89°14′00″E / 23.0167°N 89.2333°E / 23.0167; 89.2333 . It has 59615 units of house hold and total area 444.7 km². Noted low lying areas are: Jhealdaha beel, Kedaria, Monaharpur and Moshihati Beels

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Monirampur has a population of 326093. Males constitute 51% of the population, and females 49%. This Upazila's 18+ population is 168903. Manirampur has an average literacy rate of 29.1% (7+ years), and while the national average of 32.4% literate. [1]

Vabodah Switch Gate, Jhapa (Rajgong) Baor, Neelkuthi at village Joypur. Important Hat-bazars: Most noted ones are Nehalpur, Manirampur, Gopalpur, Khatuadanga (Tetultala), Konakhola, Dhakuria, Rajganj and Chinetola.

Personalities

Dr. Captain Jibon Ratan Dhar- Served in British Army during WWI. Prof. Showkat Ali, Prof of Bangla, MM college, from Balidah. One of the notable village is Parala that produced Ex. MP and educationist Pijush Bhattyacharya; Current Upazilla Chairman Swapon Bhattyacharya; Graduate during British period Fazlul Karim BA; Prominent lawyer Anwarul Karim, Physician and researcher Monawar Hosain MBBS, PHD (USA); Engineer Delawar Hossain MS (Canada); Engineer Motiur Rahman and Biotechnologist GM Rabiul Islam MS (Belgium).

Administrative

Monirampur has 17 Unions and 249 villages. Unions are: Monirampur, Durbodanga, Monoharpur, Nehalpur, Kultia, Rohita, Shyamkur etc Health centres: It has one 32 bed Upazila health complex and 2 Union sub-centers, at Nehalpur and Rajgong.
