Musical Style I.D.

I'd like to know what tradition/s (or simply style) of music Elliott Smith is drawing on for his little morose piano ditty "Bye". It sounds familiar. (I'd post a link here, but I'm not sure if that constitutes a copyright violation...the song is short and shouldn't be difficult to find—and a legal thirty second clip should give you enough of an idea). To me, it sounds like a cross between Philip Glass (minimalist) and Johann Sebastian Bach (baroque). -- JackofOz (talk) 04:27, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2004-2005

During Winter 2004-2005 (northern hemisphere), there was a fad, (maybe they are called norwegian hats, or that they came from norway, or the style) and the hats had like a puff at the central top with a little base, and there are, if I remember correctly, ear side flaps (to protect the ears from the cold, I guess I reckon), and from these ear side flaps hang braided (if I remember correctly) hangings/(dress-like) tassels, that start (if I remember correctly) and end (if I remember correctly) with a base. They are still worn today (I believe). These hats look onepiece (as in altogether, all in one) woven. What are these hats called?

What is that brand of these hats? What is the pattern of these hats?

What is the style of these hats? What is the color of these hats?68.148.149.184 (talk) 18:57, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How ironic, yes if the fad includes Chullos. Definitely not the Ushanka. The hat I have in mid (in desgin, not necessarily pattern or color) is [1] but werewhere the braids are longer and the poofy at the top has a base (unless I'm somehow mistaken, I can't be sure, I guess).68.148.149.184 (talk) 23:00, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Arab artist

Which Arab artist of Egypt had a music video where he keep saying "Ma salama". In the video, he was injured and went to the hospital and at the end of the video, he was a police officer taking care of the traffic. It was shot in Egypt, like cairo. Will And Grace

In one of the episodes, the camera cuts to Karen sitting in a chair while Jack is singing in a bar, I think a gay bar, and sitting down in he seat next to her. They are at a bar table. Star Wars: A New Hope

Near the end of the movie, as they are flying away from the soon to be exploding Death Star, there is 1)the Millennium Falcon, 2)Luke's X-Wing, 3)Wedge's X-Wing, and 4)UYW (Unidentified Y-Wing). Who the heck is this???

--MrE1 (talk) 06:44, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. Looks like it was someone who is only named in the 'expanded universe'. According to this site it looks like it might be someone called Keyan Farlander, who was proably made up just to answer this question.Popcorn II (talk) 07:25, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd second that analysis. The extra Y-Wing was likely added for non-plot reasons (for example, to make the shot more visually appealing, for balance or something like that) and the extra Y-Wing was later retconned to create a story-based reason for it. There are TONS of things like that in Star Wars; like aliens in the backgrounds of shots which Lucas likely had no reason to put in the film except as background visual interest, out of which entire storylines were created by later authors. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 19:04, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Skateboarding c. 1982 1983 : Mark "Gator" Rogowski

In either 1982 or 1983 Mark "Gator" Rogowski was on the cover of a magazine -- In the photo he was standing, directly facing the viewer full-on, holding his skateboard horizontally against his chest with his arms crossed over it. I think he was looking tough, and I think he was wearing a special forces type beret.

I always thought it was the cover of Thrasher Skateboard mag, but now that they have posted all their covers online I see that it must not be them...Maybe it was "Skateboarder Magazine" or "Skateboarding Magazine" or some short-lived mag of the time?

Anyway, any ideas as to the Mag or date? Thanks. Saudade7 03:14, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

indoor shooting vs outdoor shooting

Was there a particular moment in the history of cinema when outdoor shooting became preferred over indoor shooting? I read somebody write that with the advent of cinema vérité there was a trend in Europe to move out of the studios to shoot realistically in real settings. Any truth in it?--117.204.84.249 (talk) 13:08, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there may be some truth in it, but your premise may be a little faulty here: I'm not at all sure that outdoor shooting is necessarily preferred over indoor shooting even today. Particularly for larger productions, it tends to be more expensive and complicated, because you need to worry about transport, and nature just isn't as cooperative as a studio environment, and if you need to go and re-shoot something, it's a hassle. Certainly, outdoor shooting has many advantages, too, but I'd imagine that people make the call on a case-by-case basis rather than based on some principle. Especially with the advent of modern special effects, a shot in a studio can look just as real as a shot outdoors. (The fact that they at times don't has more to do with crappy execution than the limits of the technology.) -- Captain Disdain (talk) 16:50, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Disdain is correct, you shoot in a studio because everything is under your control. I thought that in the very early days of cinema, everything was outdoors because, well, the Sun is freakishly bright, and lighting wasn't that good or reliable in the early days. Tempshill (talk) 17:16, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And Tempshill is correct. In the early days of silents, even "interior" scenes were usually shot on a set with walls but no ceiling (or a translucent covering), so that they were lit by sunlight. Deor (talk) 18:53, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Resemblance of actors portraying famous people

(I realize this is a subjective question, but it's more about perception than opinion, so I'm asking it). I am looking for examples of actors who played famous people in movies and whose bare facial features actually resemble those of the person they're portraying. A lot has been written about Benicio del Toro's resemblance with Che, though of course the black beret and beard helped. On the other hand, it was difficult for me to suspend my disbelief, though I was willing, when watching Anthony Hopkins play clean-shaven, unbespectacled, bare-headed Nixon. Apart from the hairline, he just didn't resemble Nixon's characteristic face at all. So, anyway, I'm looking for compelling examples of resemblance, I don't care how well they acted or how famous the actors are, but the portrayed character should be famous, obviously. Thanks in advance. ---Sluzzelin talk 07:01, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I always thought Ken Russell erred grievously when he chose Richard Chamberlain to play Tchaikovsky in The Music Lovers. Donald Sutherland would have been a much better choice. It's probably too late for Sutherland to play Tchaikovsky now, because he's 20 years older than Tchaikovsky was when he died. -- JackofOz (talk) 23:36, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

M. E. Clifton James had an uncanny resemblance to Field Marshal Montgomery, and he was used in real life to impersonate him. The film I Was Monty's Double was based on James's book of the same name, and James played both himself and Monty in the film. Ed Flanders played Harry S. Truman in a number of films, more than any other actor, because of their resemblance. -- JackofOz (talk) 06:27, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And then there was Larry Parks, who played Al Jolson in The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again. The second movie depicted how Parks was discovered and used as Jolson's look-alike in the first movie. In different scenes he played either Jolson, or himself, or himself playing Jolson. They weren't actually very close in looks, but Jolson Sings Again made them out to be dead ringers. -- JackofOz (talk) 06:35, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, all ye film buffs. I just did a lot of comparing with the help of google images, and those are all great examples (including a great hypothetical example)! My list still needs some actresses resembling the women they portrayed. Thinking about this, I came up with nothing convincing but realized that sometimes even bare faces get enhanced for the part. I remember my curious anticipation of seeing Nicole Kidman as Virginia Woolf in The Hours and then experiencing the same irritation Richard Schickel described when he wrote "one finds oneself focusing excessively on the unfortunate prosthetic nose Kidman affects in order to look more like the novelist." (Though unlike Schickel I liked the movie). Can anyone add some women to the list? ---Sluzzelin talk 11:46, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A standard in pornographic movies

Why is it that, in pornographic movies, the straight scenes invariably end with the man ejaculating on the woman's face and/or into her open mouth? How did this become standard? (or is this standard only in American porn? I have seen Japanese porn in which the women were treated much more respectfully, and the scenes did not end in this way.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.35.186.173 (talk) 07:18, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can still find some that are this way but the older standard was to have the man pull out and ejaculate on the woman's pubic hair/stomach/thigh/etc. It is basically the finale of the scene. It's called the "money shot" after all. It has to happen otherwise it was just some thrusting that took place on screen. People want to see that something actually happened and the ejaculation is the way that this is presented. As time went on, the sex acts in the movies got more and more... extreme, for lack of a better word. Anal used to be rare and now it's rather common-place. The cum shot follows this logic. The location got more extreme. It moved up the body to the face/mouth. Additionally, having the guy cum on the woman's face or in her mouth, has a psychological effect (no, I don't have a source... Playboy, maybe?) in that it shows that the woman wants him and his cum so much that she wants it on her face or in her mouth and not just down around her genitals somewhere. Another example of this is that in the older movies the ejaculate was hardly ever touched by the woman and now it's not uncommon to see women "play" with it by getting their fingers in it or by having a second woman lick it off the first woman. Dismas|(talk) 09:58, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For more details see cum shot, which I can't access from work. I would also suggest that there may be a misogynistic aspect to the increasing prevalence of the cum shot, involving some desire for humiliation. As for Japanese porn, presumably you've never seen bukkake (another NSFW link). --Richardrj talk email 10:43, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would posit that this phenomenon is not particular to straight porn: in gay porn, but not excluding other categories, facials are common as well. Although some people would argue that they are not that common, I would suspect that the risk of STI is higher among gays, or men who have sex with other men. Notwithstanding, it is possible that straight porn models have the same statistics of disease as gay porn models, although I haven't done any research in that area.
I believe another reason the Money Shot exists is because it is because it actually more erotic to see it. From a gay point of view anyhow. Also, if the man ejaculated in the bottom (both female and male), you could not definitively verify if the man truly ejaculated or not. He could be acting. And frankly, if your acting, that's not that real and it doesn't get you off. And if your acting, it's spoiling the movie, and it's a turn off.68.148.149.184 (talk) 23:17, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, like every time I have sex, I pull out so that I can cum on the woman's face. If anything, it looks less realistic to have the man pull out and cum on her face. To me, it looks like the man is "marking his territory" more than anything else. It's clearly not for the woman's pleasure, and even strictly in terms of the man's pleasure, why would he want to pull out of such a warm, inviting spot in order to cum? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.27.151.91 (talk) 00:53, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kiss (band)

The costumes in the band Kiss, are the spikes actually metal, and has anyone gotten hurt from them? 65.121.141.34 (talk) 19:43, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. They are metal (likely aluminum). I have never heard of any record of serious injury from the costumes. I'm sure they caused minor irritations. I remember recently seeing Gene Simmons on some reality show where he put his costume back on and complained about the weight of it and how sore he would be the following day. -- kainaw 19:56, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Villain from a Wolverine comic

I used to have a Wolverine comic book a while ago. It took place in a very snowy environment (Alaska, I think) and it had Wolverine fighting a vampire-like bad guy. I've been trying to find that guy's name but I can't figure it out. His skin was all white, he had long white hair and sunglasses and his jaw would extend all the way down to his knees and he'd have hundreds of big sharp teeth. Very creepy dude. At the end of the comic, Wolverine killed him by cutting him down on a motorcycle with a samurai-esque sword. I'd appreciate any help. TravisAF (talk) 23:37, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A few possibilities: Morbius, the Living Vampire and Batwing both seem to be Spider-man villains, but could have easily crossed to a Wolverine comic. Brickbat once fought Colossus. Wikipedia also has an article featuring known vampires in the Marvel universe, so if I have not stumbled across it, you might have better luck through that link. Ah, I found it. It was Bloodscream. That guy gave me nightmares when I was a kid. Thanks for your help. TravisAF (talk) 01:52, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

May 5

Show

In my boys, one of the episodes has a scene where they are playing poker (all males) with I presume the main cast with a few older men. Which episode is this?68.148.149.184 (talk) 01:51, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
