Hi Drew, I really owe you a big thanks for getting into this whole brouhaha. That article has needed help for quite a while, and the way it reads now looks good to me (at least I tried to be neutral), but I'd love it if other editors not affiliated with them took a look at it and trimmed it - I think if anything, it's too long now, but I'm kind of wordy :) I've never taken the time to really learn chart tables, so the one near the bottom where it lists song, peak on this chart, peak on that chart, etc looks a little lopsided. Other ones I've seen use some kind of "rowspan" command to include things like what album each single was on, which would be Will to Power for the first four and Journey Home for the last two. I may teach myself that at some point, unless you know how to fix it, in which case I don't just owe you one, I guess I would owe you two! Zephyrnthesky (talk) 04:54, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it could probably look better, but I figured out how to adjust the column width and get the rowspan thingy to list the albums. Still, I appreciate what you've done with all this. Take care. Zephyrnthesky (talk) 06:18, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Their music never was more than a few swallows of "my cup of tea", either, and after all the drama I'm ready to pour the contents of the cup down the drain. I kind of liked the song "Say It's Gonna Rain" and remember hearing that in clubs years ago. If you Google the two names there's some info I found on a freestyle music blog that I didn't post here (unreliable source, not to mention somebody would have gone through the roof!) that talks about the history. It's been a vendetta by this person and his multiple accounts against her since before I found the page and I finally had enough and took it upon myself to learn more about them than I ever cared to, just to make sure the article is legit and NPOV. Again, thanks for the help. Zephyrnthesky (talk) 17:03, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not to mention a couple of mountain ranges! Well, I guess those are nothing for a dragon, but for those of us plodding along on foot... I'll be curious to see what happens when the two admin-imposed "wiki breaks" expire later this week. Thanks again for your help, and happy editing! I have a question...

Where can I go to find a list of new articles? I've tried searching "new articles" and "recently created articles" but I can't find a list of newly created articles. Do you know if one exists? Thanks! Stormcloud22 (talk) 21:20, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I love your game! I've read books like that that let you choose the next step and I would lvoe to make a game like that of my own. I think I understand how to link the articles together in order, how do you create a sub-page off of your userpage like you did? Stormcloud22 (talk) 21:24, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Edit: Never mind, I just figured out how to create my own sandbox! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stormcloud22 (talkcontribs) 23:09, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I found it, thanks! How do you indent? The tab button doesn't work and if you use a space, it puts the text in a box.Stormcloud22 (talk) 21:24, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I haven't created any new articles yet, but when I find one that doesn't exist and should, I will. For now I'm just making articles make sense and correcting typos. I'm also welcoming newcomers on their talkpages. Stormcloud22 (talk) 23:27, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is what I'm using to welcome newcomers. I added one sentence, the rest was already written. I think the more compact a welcome is, the more useful it is. If it's too long or confusing, the person reading it may get overwhelmed.Stormcloud22 (talk) 01:20, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, haha, forgot to put in the actual welcome box to show you, here it is. This one seems pretty common, it's the one I got when I joined.

Adoption templates

I noticed on someones talk-page that you said you didn't know how to make an adoption official. If you find a user you want to adopt, leave a message on their talk page and change {{Adoptme}} to {{Adoptoffer}} on their user page, or add it if they don't have the {{Adoptme}} template. Once they have accepted the adoption use the {{Adoptee|Adopter's Username}} and {{Adopter|Adoptee's Username}} templates on the their user page and your user page respectively.

Hope this helps. If you have any questions on adoption just ask. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 15:59, 16 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Noah's Ark conflict

I would strongly advise you to take a step back from this conflict. Re-read the discussion and watch it unfold. If you really feel that you need to jump in and make a comment, back it up with a quote from one of wikipedia's policy pages such as WP:NPOV. I'm sorry I can't be more help, but I try to keep out of discussions like this one. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 10:19, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: adoption method

I do have a very structured adoption method :). I found that because I adopt mostly very new wikipedians, they ask the same questions over and over again.

How does your method work, in practice?
I was getting annoyed with my adoptees all asking "how do I make a link" and "how do I add pictures", so I produced simplified versions of the "wikipedia:" page on the subject. I set them one specific part of editing (such as adding categories) or wikipedia policies (such as the 5 pillars of editing), and show them a simplified page on that subject and give them a task concerning it. I then mark/look at the finished product and give them feed back and tips.
Do adoptees ever complain that you're being too pushy?
I have never had any complaints because I treat my adoptees as individuals. There are some who edit every two days ad there have been some that have faded away into 1 edit every month. One of the first questions I ask, along with "how long have you been editing", is "how often do you edit". If I find that they only edit at weekends then I give them time to complete their tasks.
Do they ever get bored and just never come back?
When they get to the stage when they can do the basics and know enough about wiki-policy to keep them from trouble, they don't enjoy doing tasks as much as they did when they were inexperienced. When they get to this stage I offer to graduate them or just to keep a close eye on them without interfering to much.
Do they usually enjoy it?
Like I said above, when they are just starting editing they do enjoy structure. However, as they get more experienced, they start to pull on the lease and you have to give them more freedom than a fully structured program can allow.
If I choose to implement a similar program on people I've already adopted, how should I broach the subject to them?
You've said that you answer questions for your adoptees, so you should start by asking them to place their questions on their own adoption page. This could be a subpage in your user space (EX User:Drew R. Smith/adoption/adoptee name) or under their user space (EX User:adoptee name/adoption). I see that you have already created this page which would make a good start for your adoption program.
You could start by asking them if they want more structure or if they are fine as it is. If they aren't sure, give them a taster of what your structured adoption program would be like, and I'm sure you'll win them round.

Hope this helps and sorry for going on forever. If you have more questions don't be afraid to ask! Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 12:32, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Totally random but..

You really should either update your status when you log in/off or remove it. It currently says your online but according to your status page, it hasn't been changed since you created that page on 12 May 2009!

Anyway. Rant over. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 12:51, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you do have to update it yourself. I add tasks to my adoptees program pages (a list of which can be found here. I'm not sure what you would call an advanced task, so if you could enlighten me... Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 13:46, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose the most advanced task I currently run is this task in which my adoptees are required to produce a B-class article. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 13:54, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck with adopting and I'm sure you'll do fine! Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 14:08, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I know, its happened to me many times which is why I try to stay clear of them. You really can't do anything except use strong evidence to back up any claims you make. Or like i said earlier, stay clear and cool down. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 14:38, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Where to go

Please take the time to read the Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentsHeader, which appears on ANI. very similar information appears when you edit that page. Specifically:

Are you in the right place? Using this page
  • Please add new incident reports to the bottom of this page.
  • Sign your post with "~~~~", which translates into a signature and a time stamp automatically.
  • When moving long threads to a subpage, add a link to the subpage and sign without a timestamp: "~~~"; this prevents premature archiving. Move to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents/[concise title]. Also consider adding/updating a status tag (e.g. {{unresolved}}).
  • Lengthy posts may be placed within a toggling collapse box. Use {{subst:Collapse top}} at the top and {{subst:Collapse bottom}} at the bottom.
  • Threads will be archived automatically after a period of inactivity. If you see a thread that should not be archived yet, please add a comment requesting more discussion, or if it is already archived, remove it from the archive and readd it to this page, preferably with a comment.
What these pages are not

This page is not part of our dispute resolution process for content issues.
For incidents involving the possible misuse of administrative powers, please discuss concerns with the admin before posting here.

  • Note the second bullet under Are you in the right place? which gives the link for reporting violations of NPA and Civility. I have pasted the entire header here in the hope that if you are ignorant of where to go for other concerns, this will serve as a handy reference for you. Hope this helps. Adoption Pages

I'm extremely sorry for all of the trouble I have caused by simply copying-and-pasting these Adoption pages. I realize now that I should have asked for permission to use them and to have given credit to the original creators. However, the reason why I did not, was that I had orginally thought that these pages (the ones that I copied and pasted) were a portion of a teaching method which many adopters both shared and used in order to instruct their adoptees. To put it simply, I thought that they could be used by any adopter, which was incorrect. They were the results of large amounts of your time, hard work, and energy. You have every right to be angry and disgusted with me, and I realize that. I apologize for my actions, and will either delete the pages and create my own teaching method and pages, or paste a template to the tops of each of these pages thanking you for allowing me to use your pages, if you allow me to do so. Once again, I apologize for my actions and I hope that we can put this whole experience behind us, and start anew. My regards, Laurinavicius (talk) 15:56, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for being so cool with this. Regards, Laurinavicius (talk) 16:01, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Would you be interested in joining this project? We need more editors who share a burden for rescuing promising editors who have gotten into serious trouble because of behavioral issues. IF (a fundamental condition!) they are interested in reforming and adapting to our standards of conduct, and are also willing to abide by our policies and guidelines, rather than constantly subverting them, we can offer to help them return to Wikipedia as constructive editors. Right now many if not most users who have been banned are still active here, but they are here as socks or anonymous IPs who may or may not be constructive. We should offer them a proper way to return. If you think this is a good idea, please join us. Abce2|AccessDenied 04:12, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption Thingy

I would love to join in that program! I took a quick look at Gaia's user page and noticed that she adopted my friend Meteorman7228. I also took a look at the debate raging on the Noah's Ark page that you mentioned(ugh!). You could spend all day arguing with some people and a snail stuck to the floor with superglue would still get farther than you could, pardon the ridiculous metaphor. So will you send me my first "task"? Thanks for suggesting this, I think it'll be fun. Stormcloud22 (talk) 00:07, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, crap! The apostrophe was the mistake, wasn't it? And I'm an idiot. It's so second-nature for me to correct typos that I didn't even think of that.Stormcloud22 (talk) 00:59, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The copyright for the article belongs to the Associated Press, and you are not permitted to maintain the complete content on-wiki. I'm not trying to pick on you, but this is wrong. Just because you give credit to someone doesn't mean you can copy an entire article. Doing so is still a copyright violation. It would have been fine to summarize in your own words and provide a link - but not to cut/paste. Also, the IP user tagged it for deletion and an admin agreed - which is not a problem and not worth threatening them over.    7   talk Δ |   05:21, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(I'm replying ere because so many people are talking at once)Actually, I wasn't that close. My first fish (at least, the first one I bought, and the first one in a long time. My parents got me bettas and goldfish all the time...) was a sailfin molly, who was a beautiful white male with a long sail, died at the hands of this aggressive fish. Were I to have inroduced him into a tank with something a little more suitable to handle his aggressive tendencies, then yes, I may have felt some remorse. As it stands, I had to keep him seperated from the main tank 6 out of 7 days, and had to watch closely else he would eat other fish instead of algae. I did take good care of him, I'm not a killer, but due to the large number of fish that died to him, I wasn't too upset when he died.Drew Smith What I've done 22:21, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A friendly warning

Drew,

You could be seen as being incivil at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject User Rehab in some of your comments, like when you claim 'skimming for keywords and didn't read his post at all'. That is possibly even a personal attack, as you're implying laziness and ignorance.

In your shoes, I would be more careful in order to ensure that I would not be personally criticising/attacking users. Computerjoe's talk 16:50, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's close to the line. Just be careful. Computerjoe's talk 06:52, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done

Programmer13 (talk) 22:28, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But...

Why would I make my article B-Class fish if my article is about plants? Programmer13 (talk) 22:49, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find it

I can't find were you send in your articles! Programmer13 (talk) 23:07, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

comment

was your comment on Rootology's talk page intended to be sarcastic? Either way I suggest you remove it or clarify. ViridaeTalk 02:47, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Drew,

I have mentioned you in a Wikiquette alert. Our recent discussion made me think a third opinion may be required.

Thanks. Computerjoe's talk 14:57, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I picked the worst topic

This plant is so rare/boring! I can't even find a picture of it! How far until my article is B-Class?
Not being nosy or anything, but what is with this?
Programmer13 (talk) 18:54, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How?

I don't know how to send in my article! I got to Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Assessment,but how do they know my article is B-Class or not!? Programmer13 (talk) 19:23, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My fish article.

Can you grade it real quick, also I'll not be on Wikipedia until Monday EST. Monkeyfox (talk) 19:24, 22 May 2009 (UTC) What else should I link to? Monkeyfox (talk) 19:52, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I Think I'm Ready

I think my article is B-Class, can you grade me? I base my information on this
Programmer13 (talk) 19:55, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey.

1. Is my article B-Class now?

2. This guy named porkchop28 put something on your user page that desurves to be on tour talk. I know I did that, but that was an accident! I think you should accept him, you are an awesome tutor. Programmer13 (talk) 20:12, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you on?

You've been on in my afternoon, you usually arn't on when I am. Programmer13 (talk) 22:04, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

3/iii

Sorry for the confusion about my name. I rarely use Wikipedia and so I must have created one account, forgot about it, and created the next best matching name years later. I agree it does look suspicious but Wikipedia's been around for a while so people can forget they registered usernames. I was wondering why I had so few edits attributed to my name.Mangalaiii (talk) 01:17, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do I drop the other username?Mangalaiii (talk) 01:18, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Believe me, I didn't notice which one I was signed in with. Firefox defaults to one while I may have logged into a different account when I sometimes use Google Chrome (less tab confusion). Plus there's no reason why I would want to use two different names because I wanted the controversy I was reporting to you to be recognized by the work I was doing with one username. Two usernames would have only confused you about resolving my problemMangalaiii (talk) 01:32, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback

Lupin's, eh? Haven't seen many people use it in a while. I've given you rollback after a scan of your reverts. You can test it out here. Remember not to rollback good-faith edits. bibliomaniac15 03:19, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Most people I've known recently use TW before Huggle. bibliomaniac15 06:24, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
WP:TWINKLE. I personally don't use any anti-vandal tools, so I really can't make a judgment. bibliomaniac15 17:35, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for undermining the project. It has been hampered by the MfD, and your comments have ended up helping those who wish to stop it developing into its full potential for good. You're on your own. -- Brangifer (talk) 04:50, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Declined Speedy Deletion: Fuck (band)

Hello Drew R. Smith, and thanks for your work patrolling new changes. I am just informing you that I declined your speedy deletion tag on Fuck (band) because Criterion A7 does not apply: the article makes a credible assertion of notability, sufficient to pass A7. Please review the criteria for speedy deletion before tagging further pages. If you have any queries, please let me know. Ale_Jrbtalk 10:13, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Proposed deletion of Gregg's (New Zealand)

It took you three minutes between my first start on this article and your nomination for deletion. Speaking as a regular new pages patroller, may I say that this is the reason why we are told to start patrolling with the earliest pages on the list - it gives people time to reference articles that are thoroughly beyond the non-notable level. If an article is that new, a quick google-search should indicate whether it's likely that the company is notable or a reference is likely to be forthcoming ("Greggs' + "New Zealand" + "coffee" registers 137,000 ghits). Luckily, another New Zealand NPP regular editor spotted your addition of the speedy template and removed it, and the article has already been nominated for New Zealand collaboration of the month. In future, please give editors a chance to improve works where there is any chance that an article is likely to be non-speediable. It should be obvious which articles can go instantly (things made up at school and autobiographies of eight year olds, to start with) and which are not, and any article which claims any form of notability (operating continuously since 1861 in a country that was only settled in 1840 is inherently notable) is not speediable. Grutness...wha? 01:21, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

S'alright - it happens. I didn't know that huggle went for the newer articles. Still worth waiting a few minutes with ones like this, though (and Gregg's isn't a restaurant - it's a coffee manufacturer). FWIW, the article's already considerably larger than it was. Grutness...wha? 01:42, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you revert my edit?

Why did you revert my edit to List of Quest for Glory characters? It was not unconstructive; I changed "narcissistic" to "self-centered" because I did not think that "narcissistic" was the proper word to have in that sentence and I left a detailed edit summary explaining why. 72.94.47.127 (talk) 02:37, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
