These districts are associated with the sex industry and sex oriented business (sex shops, strip clubs etc). In some of these places prostitution may legally take place. Other red light districts are known for their illegal prostitution scene (in countries where prostitution is illegal). In red light districts where prostitution is illegal prostitutes or clients may be arrested or fined if caught by the police (the enforcement of anti-prostitution laws varies by country or place).

Brothels are illegal (since 1956), but "clubs" and "wiskerias" are fronts for prostitution and are tolerated.

Prostitution in these red light districts is not legal. Street prostitution and brothels are illegal in the UK. Some local councillors have asked to be allowed to establish "tolerance zones" for prostitution in these red light districts, but the Home Office has refused to allow such "tolerance zones". Currently the government is planning tough "anti-prostitution laws" which target the clients.(see Prostitution in the United Kingdom).
