Gran Turismo 5 (commonly abbreviated as GT5) is to be the fifth edition of the highly acclaimed Gran Turismo racing video game series. It is currently under development by Polyphony Digital and is to be published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3.[2] It expands on the Prologue version and will be the first of the main numbered series to feature on the PlayStation 3.

For the first time in the main series, an online mode with 16 player capability will be available in the game. Also included for the first time will be damage modeling. Dynamic weather changes and night racing have also been hinted at,[3] but have yet to be officially confirmed. WRC and NASCAR will also be featured for the first time in the Gran Turismo franchise.

Development

The game was first revealed at E3 2006 under the name Vision Gran Turismo. In an April 2008 interview, Yamauchi revealed that 150 people had worked on Gran Turismo 5 for four years, with all of Polyphony Digital's 120 employees working on GT5, and the game costing 50 times more to develop than 1997's Gran Turismo.[4]

At Sony's E3 2009 Press Conference, a trailer for Gran Turismo 5 was shown. Many cars and tracks were shown in the trailer, as well as damage on a rally car, but no release date was revealed.[5] In an interview with Eurogamer, Kazonuri Yamauchi said that "We've actually reached a point where we can probably release it [GT5] anytime, except that you can also keep working as long as you want to as well, it's just a matter of timing."[6]

Cars and Tracks

Gran Turismo 5 will feature 1000 cars and 80 tracks.[7] Ferrari will feature in a main numbered series after making their first appearance in GTHD.[8]

Release

In a July 2008 interview with IGN, creator Kazunori Yamauchi mentioned that 'at the moment', Polyphony Digital is focused on updates for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and that Gran Turismo 5 may not be released until 2010.[9] On November 30, 2008. Sony’s chief executive in Southern Europe, James Armstrong, revealed in a statement to a Spanish newspaper that GT5 is expected to be released around Christmas 2009. SCEE UK later stated they could not confirm a launch date.[10]

It has been confirmed that Gran Turismo 5 will be released exclusively for PlayStation 3.[2] Yamauchi has commented that Gran Turismo 5 could have some compatibility with the PSP version.[11]
