The HP Slate is a multi-touch capable Windows 7 tablet PC. Announced at CES 2010, the device will focus on content consumption including games, ebooks, music, videos and web browsing.

History

HP has a history of manufacturing portable touch devices with the Jornada line. Following the acquisition of Compaq, HP stopped producing the Jornada line of Microsoft Windows powered Pocket PCs and continued developing and marketing Pocket PCs in the iPAQ line. HP currently makes the HP TouchSmart series of Tablet PCs, laptops and touchscreen all-in-one desktop computers running Windows 7.

The HP Slate is the product of a 5 year program at HP Labs in Bristol, UK to develop a capable media-consumption device. It began around an E-Reader concept.[1] After studying consumers' use of devices, HP learned that users wanted something thin and light that was capable of delivering a "rich user experience; to browse, listen to music, watch videos and enjoy media".[2]

HP Chief Technology Officer, Phil McKinney, has stated that "2010 is the optimal year...there is now this convergence of low cost, low power processors, with an Operating System - Windows 7 that is touch aware."[3]

Hardware

The HP Slate will feature an integrated video camera, a 8.9" capacitive multi-touch screen with digitizer and pen support[4] and a standard USB 2.0 port [5].

Software

The HP Slate will run Windows 7, which includes native multi-touch technology that will be used on the HP Slate.[6]. Adobe and HP have confirmed that the "full web" experience will be available on the HP Slate, including full hardware accelerated Adobe Flash content and Adobe AIR applications.[7]

Reception

The HP Slate received a positive reception when shown at CES. CNBC said "HP's Slate has been the big buzz"[8].
