Club Sport Emelec is a sports club based in Guayaquil, Ecuador that is best known for their football team. If all sports the club participates in are taken into account, the club has won more national championships than any other club in Ecuador. In football, they have ten national titles, which is third overall. Emelec plays in the most popular local derby in Ecuador, the Clásico del Astillero, against crosstown rivals Barcelona.

History

The club was found after an assembly of employees at the Empresa Eléctrica del Ecuador, an electric company in Guayaquil, decided to start an amateur sports league. The initiative was spearheaded by George Capwell, the executive officer of the company who came from the US. The first sports played in the club were baseball, basketball, boxing, swimming, handball, and football. Capwell did not enjoy football, so the sport was supported only by his employees in non-official but recognized championships. This changed in the 1940s, when Capwell finally lent his support, resulting in the club winning several official local championships, building their own stadium, and hosting the 1947 South American Championship entirely in it.

In 1957, the club became the first national champions in football with a "dream team" that included Cipriano Yu Lee, José Vicente Balseca, Cruz Ávila, Mariano Larraz, Carlos Alberto Raffo, Jaime Ubilla, Daniel Pinto, Rómulo Gómez and Suárez-Rizzo; they were coached by Eduardo "Tano" Spandre. Since then, they have accumulated nine more national titles, placing them 3rd in the national title count behind Barcelona and El Nacional (both have 13). They have also won seven local titles (two in the amateur area and five in the professional era).

In the 1990s, the football team saw success internationally. In 1995, they reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores; they lost to eventual champions Grêmio. In 2001, the team was close to becoming the first Ecuadorian club to win an international title when they were a finalist in the 2001 Copa Merconorte. In the finals, they lost to Millionarios 3-1 on penalty kicks after tying on aggregate 2-2.

Facilities

Several years after the creation of the Empresa Eléctrica del Ecuador sports club, its founder, George Lewis Capwell, decided that it was time for the club to have its own Baseball stadium, so in 1942 Guayaquil's Municipal authorities donated 4 city blocks for the construction of the first private sports stadium in Ecuador. A year after that, in 1943, Emelec's staff officially named and initiated the construction of the George Capwell Stadium.

The beautiful George Capwell Stadium opened its doors for the first time on October 21 of 1945, the inaugural game was a Baseball match between Emelec and Oriente, and George Capwell played as a catcher for the "Azules" (Emelec). Although Emelec's president did not like football and their stadium was not initially intended to be a football field, soon after the inauguration the first football match was held. Emelec won 5 - 4 against an all stars team from the cities of Manta and Bahia.

The 1947 Copa America competition was held exclusively at George Capwell Stadium, and an undefeated Argentina became South America's champion with an all star team that included names like Alfredo Di Stefano, Lostau, and Mendez. Ecuador finished in 6th place. (Brazil did not participate on this competition.)

After the birth of Guayaquil's Estadio Modelo Guayaquil "Alberto Spencer", the George Capwell Stadium was closed for many years because it became obsolete, and in several occasions was almost destroyed for various projects that luckily for the club were never actually completed.

It wasn't until 1991 that with the leadership of Nassib Nehme that the George Capwell Stadium was reopened, to become once again the house of Emelec. Since its reopening the stadium has been enlarged twice and a new and final change has been scheduled for 2010, to reach a final capacity of 45,000 spectators.

At the moment the official capacity of the stadium according to the FEF (Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol) is 18,000 spectators. However, that number has not been changed even after the two enlargements were finished. It is said that the true capacity of the stadium at the moment is 30,000 spectators.

Training ground

Emelec's training ground is located in the north of Guayaquil in a neighborhood called Los Samanes and the training ground itself is called Complejo Deportivo de Los Samanes, translated to Los Samanes Sports Complex. The construction of the Samanes training ground started in 1984 and was finished in 1986 and was built by Filanbanco a large financial institution in Ecuador at the time.

Filanbanco had its own professional football which used Los Samanes until 1989 when despite being one of the top teams at the time, Filanbanco's football club was disbanded due to lack of supporters and high maintenance costs.

During the 1993 Copa America held in Ecuador, the Samanes complex was used by the Argentinean delegation, they stayed and trained there and were very appreciative of its secluded nature and excellent facilities, that among other things included 4 professional football fields, an indoor football field, basketball courts, tennis courts, an Olympic size pool, social area and sleeping area.

After Filanbanco's football club was disbanded, the complex remained in the hands of Filanbanco for their employees to use its facilities, until 1999 when the Ecuadorian financial crisis ended with Filanbanco going bankrupt and ending up in the hands of the AGD a governmental agency created to control, protect and administrate the assets of Filanbanco and other financial institutions that went bust during the crisis.

This meant that Los Samanes ended up in the hands of the Issfa (Instituto de Servicio Social de las Fuerzas Armadas) the Ecuadorian army's social security agency. Because Issfa had no real use for it, the then Football director of Emelec Mr. Omar Quintana Baquerizo managed to loan the training ground for the club and Emelec has been using it ever since.

Initially the agreement was a loan for 5 years, but when the 5 years passed the government and the club arranged a 100 year loan for the facilities, however the high monthly cost agreed has made the payments very difficult for the club and the new administrators lead byt the club's president Mr. Elias Wated are in talks with the government to settle on a definitive purchase of the training ground.

The Samanes complex is a great asset for the club, having the perfect facilities for the professional team, the youth squads and the club members, and its of a vital importance for the club's future.

Supporters

Boca del Pozo

The fan group known as "Boca del Pozo" (mouth of the well) was founded July 25, 1980 by Giussepe Cavanna Chavez (today part of the club's staff). The group adopted that name because their clubhouse, known as Cavanna's Place, was located in a neighborhood with the same name. The fan base gained recognition and grew in number. Today, Boca Del Pozo is known to usually gather behind the goals, and chant for Emelec from beginning to end, regardless of the score. The group has also created several factions in several different cities in Ecuador.

Legión Azul (Blue Legion)

The group know as Legión Azul was founded in 2001 before Emelec won that year's championship. It started with 10 to 15 members. Today, however, there are more or less 250 members of this group now. They are located right in front of "La Boca del Pozo" behind the other goal.

Managerial team

The Managerial team for the 2010 season is the following:

Argentinian manager Jorge Luis Sampaoli arrived to Ecuador on December 2009 to take charge of Emelec for the 2010 season. He was preceded by the also Argentinian manager Gabriel Perrone who was let go because the team did not fulfill the objective of winning the 2009 Ecuadorian Championship, although the official reason for Perrone being fired was "lack of will to work".

According to the new manager his style is very similar to that of Chilean national squad manager, the also Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa, and he likes to play a very offensive game with 3 center backs, 2 wing backs, 1 defensive and 1 offensive midfielders, 2 wingers and a single center forward, in other words a 3-3-1-3 formation.

Noted players

Over the years Emelec has had many of the best Ecuadorian players in history, being one of the most important contribuitors to the Ecuadorian National Squad. Some of the best Ecuadorian players to have dressed in blue are:

Emelec besides being a driving force behind football youth programs in Ecuador is also a pioneer in other areas of the sport in the country. The blues were the first team in Ecuador to sign foreign players, and this is one of the reasons they were given the nickname los Millonarios, the millionaires, because at the time they were the only club that was able to do this in the country.

Emelec has signed players of many different nationalities from countries such as Paraguay, Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Perú, Venezuela, and even Italy, Romania, Macedonia, and USA among others, but historically Emelec's foreign players are predominately from Argentina and Uruguay.

International

The Pacific Cup

In the tradition of other major clubs in the world, Emelec organizes every year a 4 team friendly tournament called "Copa del Pacifico". This tournament was established in the late 1940s to be held in the George Capwell Stadium and has become a traditional tourney in Guayaquil and Ecuador. The motto of the tournament is The tournament of the Pearl because the city of Guayaquil is know in South America as the Pearl of the Pacific.

The first Pacific Cup was held in 1949 between 5 teams Magallanes from Chile, Alianza Lima from Peru, Aucas, Barcelona, and the host Emelec all from Ecuador. The winner of the first Pacific Cup was the Chilean team Magallanes and the runner up was Emelec, that also had the goalscorer of the tournament, the Ecuadorian Hugo Mena with 13 goals.

The tournament was played during the 1950s but due to scarce information there are no stats from the tournament during those years, and despite being a highly regarded event the tournament disappeared for almost 40 years.

In 1992, the tournament was once again organized by the young Emelec Football Director Mr. Nassib Neme. During his term the cup was played twice only to disappear once again when Nehme left his post as Emelec's Football Director at the end of 1993. In 2008 once again Neme became Emelec's Football Director and immediately reinstated the Pacific Cup, which was paid in 2008, 2009 and will be held in January 2010.

The 2009 champion of the Pacific Cup was Independiente Medellín that won the final 2 - 0 against the hosts Emelec with two goals from their star Colombian Jackson Martinez. To get to the finales they beat 2008 Ecuadorian champion Deportivo Quito in the first round of the tournament.

The host Emelec has managed to qualify to all 6 documented Copa del Pacifico Finals, but has only managed to win the tournament twice in 1993 winning 2-0 against their archrivals Barcelona and in 2010 winning 2 to 1 against Independiente Medellín. The scorers were David Quiroz and Joao Rojas for Emelec and the midfielder Pardo for Independiente Medellín.

The Guayaquil City Cup

The Guayaquil City Cup was held 1988 and is one of the most iconic moments in the history of the club. This tournament was organized by Emelec's archrivals, Barcelona to inaugurate their then new stadium, the Monumental.

Emelec was going through a very obscure moment in their life as a professional football club and had almost a decade without winning anything of relevance and were even relegated to the Ecuadorian B division in 1980. On the other hand Barcelona was living their glory days becoming the team with the most Ecuadorian titles and building a 50,000 spectator monster, to celebrate this moment Barcelona organized the Guayaquil City Cup inviting the 1987 Copa Libertadores champion, Peñarol from Uruguay, Spanish giants Barcelona and at the last minute they invited Emelec to the party.

In the first match of the tournament Emelec won 2 to 1 against the powerful Peñarol with two goals from striker Raul Aviles in what became a large surprise at the time. The other leg of the tournament was between the Barcelona’s and the Ecuadorian side won that match. It is important to mention that the Spanish Barcelona played the tournament with a mix of their reserve and youth squad, all big names stayed in Spain. The final match between Barcelona and Emelec was played on the 29th of May and to the surprise and disappointment of the thousands of Barcelona fans in the stadium, Emelec won 1 – 0 with a goal from Uruguayan midfielder Ruben Beninca, and sealed one of the toughest defeats Barcelona has ever endured against their archrivals.

Although it belongs to their archrival, from that year on the Monumental stadium became one of the most important sceneries for Emelec’s triumphs. That same year Emelec managed to tie against all odds an Ecuadorian championship quarterfinal match against Barcelona that allowed them to play the semifinals against Universidad Catolica de Quito and eliminated Barcelona from the race for the championship. Despite that Barcelona lend their stadium to Emelec for the match against Catolica, which they won and got into the final against Deportivo Quito. In the first leg of the final played in the Monumental, Emelec won 3 – 0 against Deportivo Quito and sealed the 1988 championship in Quito with a 1 all tie.

Some years later, in 1991, Emelec reopened its own stadium and also organized a friendly tournament to celebrate this event, and Barcelona was hoping to be invited in return to get a chance to win back some honor, but Emelec did not invite their archrivals something that reopened the wound and deepened the distance between this two traditional Ecuadorian giants.

Explosión Azul

Explosión Azul

Explosión Azul or Blue explosion, is the official name of Emelec's team presentation that is held every year before the Ecuadorian tournament or the international events Emelec has qualified to are being held.

The event is usually held in the George Capwell Stadium and its one of the highlights of the team's pre-season. It mainly consists on several shows, music bands and fireworks followed by a one by one presentation of the team member's for the season and a friendly match against either a local or a foreging team.

On the last "Explosión Azul", Emelec played against newly promoted Ecuadorian team Independiente José Terán and won the match 2 - 0, the scorers were Fernando Giménez and Jaime Ayoví.

On previous editions the rivals for the "Explosión Azul" have been teams like Sporting Cristal, Independiente Medellín and Liga de Portoviejo among others.

The Cradle of Ecuadorian Football

For over many years Emelec has been the leader in Ecuador for developing new football talents that are discovered and trained in their spectacular youth programs. Emelec has won several titles and recognition because of this and as of 2010 a lot of teams in Ecuadorian first division have players that either were trained by Emelec from scratch or spent some time in Emelec's Youth division.

The following is as list of Professional players produced by Emelec's youth program and play in teams other than Emelec:

Facts

  • Emelec's founder George Capwell did not like football, he was a huge baseball fan and when he created the sports club he did not support football, only his employees did.
  • In 1957, many years after sharing titles with other teams from Guayaquil in the amateur and regional tournaments, Emelec won the first professional Ecuadorian football Championship ever.
  • Emelec was the first team in Ecuador to have its own stadium and was also the first team to make a million-dollar transaction, hiring $1´650.000 for the Argentine player Walter Pico.
  • In 1948 Emelec became the first Ecuadorian team in history to compete on an international event. They were invited as Guayaquil's champions to represent Ecuador in the "Copa Campeones" in Chile, which in time became the famous "Copa Libertadores de America".
  • In 1962 Emelec became the first Ecuadorian team to win a match in the "Copa Libertadores de America" when they defeated C.D. Millonarios from Colombia 4 - 2. The team also holds the largest score any Ecuadorian team has ever manage to obtain in the "Copa Libertadores", 7 - 2 against Universidad Catolica from Chile, also in 1962.
  • After winning the 1979 championship, in 1980 Emelec went to Ecuadorian Second Division, called "Serie B" because they made the worst presentation in played games during that year.
  • The late Eduardo "Che" Perez founded the first organized group to follow any Ecuadorian team. He followed Emelec anywhere the team went until his death in 2003. The largely organized group "Boca del Pozo" was the first "Barra Brava" in the country. Because of their support, Emelec's fans are recognized as the most faithful fans in the country.
  • Emelec's historical top scorer is Carlos Alberto Juarez with more than 110 goals scored in five years. His runner up is Jesus Cardenas.

Trivia

  • In 1998, Jaime Ivan Kaviedes scored 43 goals and became the all time top scorer in Ecuadorian history and that year's world top scorer. The next year Kaviedes was transferred to Perugia of the Italian Serie A for USD 5.5M. and after that he played in several teams all over the world including Celta de Vigo, Real Valladolid, Puebla, Porto, Crystal Palace, Barcelona S.C., Deportivo Quito, and Argentinos Juniors. Although he has had so many opportunities during his career, and almost nine years after scoring 43 goals in a single year with Emelec, he has not been able to accumulate another 43 goals with both club and country from 1999 to 2006.
  • The late forward Otilino Tenorio became famous with Emelec because every time he scored he celebrated by wearing a blue Spiderman mask to the delight of the fans. Tenorio died in 2005 in a tragic traffic accident. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Jaime Ivan Kaviedes scored the third goal in Ecuador's victory over Costa Rica, and to celebrate the goal he had just scored, he used a yellow Spiderman mask honoring the memory of Otilino Tenorio.
  • On the final match day of 2002 season three teams were competing for the title. El Nacional were the favorites as they only had to tie at home against a weak Deportivo Quito side while Barcelona SC had to visit Liga de Quito at their stadium and needed a victory to become the champions. The least optioned team was Emelec who played in their stadium against Sociedad Deportivo Aucas. They needed a win and a El Nacional and Barcelona SC loss. Ecuadorian football officials were so convinced that the champion was going to be either El Nacional or Barcelona, that they had the cup in Quito and were ready to send it to either one of the stadiums of the city where the two teams were playing. All 3 games were played simultaneously, and surprisingly El Nacional was soon losing to Deportivo Quito 1 – 4, while Barcelona and Liga were tied at zero. Emelec struggled to score until the last few minutes of the game when defender Augusto Poroso sent a spectacular volley into the net to beat Aucas. Minutes later, El Nacional and Emelec finished their respective games, but Barcelona's match had a few minutes more to go. In the Capwell Stadium Emelec fans waited anxiously for the match to end when suddenly, at the last minute, Barcelona scored. Tears were starting to fall down when suddenly the ref signaled an offside nullifying the goal. A couple of minutes later the game was over and Emelec had won their 10th and last crown, so far. The team and fans had to wait a few hours on the stadium's pitch for the Cup to arrive from Quito.
  • Two-time best goalkeeper in the Ecuadorian championship, Marcelo Elizaga, has shown so much of his skills that Ecuador's former coach, Luis Fernando Suarez, asked him to become an Ecuadorian citizen so he could use him in Ecuador's team for the Copa America 2007 and the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. Ecuadorian law allows foreigners to become Ecuadorian citizens once they have stayed at least 3 years in the country. Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa granted him with the Ecuadorian citizenship on February 7, 2007.
  • On April 28 Emelec celebrated its 80 years
  • On June 2010 Emelec was named best soccer team in the world by FIFA's Iffhs
