Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a video game in the Castlevania series, and is a reboot of the franchise.[4] It is an action-adventure game in a fantasy setting in Southern Europe during the Middle Ages. The game was developed by MercurySteam and Kojima Productions and published by Konami.[5][6][7] Hideo Kojima, producer of the Metal Gear franchise, was involved with the title.[8]

The game was originally announced as Lords of Shadow with no connection to the Castlevania series mentioned.[9] According to Konami, this was to keep their plans to radically change the direction of the Castlevania mythos a secret[10] and to prevent the announcement of the game from upstaging their other series release at the time, Castlevania Judgment.[11]

Gameplay

Combat

Lords of Shadow is a third-person action-adventure game in which the player controls the main character Gabriel Belmont. [9][12][13] The combat will utilize a retractable pyrokinetic chain whip called the Combat Cross. The player can perform up to 40 unlockable combos with it.[12] The commands consist of direct attacks for dealing direct damage to enemies, and weak area attacks when surrounded by them. It is also capable of interactions with secondary weapons, such as knives, holy water and other items which can be upgraded.[12] In addition to this, the Combat Cross's melee skills can be combined with the Light and Shadow magic system, which are spells aimed at defense and aggression, respectively.[12][14] The whip is upgradeable[14] and can also be used as a defensive aid in order to guard against an opponent's attack.[12]

Platforming and puzzles

Similar to the original Castlevania titles, platforming and puzzles are a key component and are featured in 50 levels.[9][12] The player can control Gabriel to jump most distances, dash or hold his balance above fatal pits.[12] The Combat Cross is not only used for combat, but also for exploration purposes like scaling walls, rappelling and swinging across gaps.[15] Some sequences of the game will require the player to solve physical puzzles or brain teasers. Alternatively, moving certain objects can set off chain reactions and open the way to another area. Activating switches can also assist against traps.[12] The player will be able to explore the levels in order to find hidden items, which can increase health or abilities.[12][16]

Enemies

The developers attempted to reach out to new audiences by distancing Lords of Shadow from previous Castlevania games, but have kept some elements intact as to not alienate current fans.[8] For example, vampires and werewolves are recurring enemies in the game, but other existing enemies include trolls, giant spiders and goblin-like creatures. The enemies can be defeated for experience points, which can be used to purchase combos or to augment the player's abilities further.[16] Lords of Shadow has large scale bosses reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus, which are special encounters where the player must use new-found abilities and platforming to defeat them. The Combat Cross can be used to grapple onto their bodies and navigate them, and break the runes that animate the titan.[12][8] When the player defeats them, they will receive items known as relics, which can assist them with other challenges in the game.[16]

Plot

Setting and characters

David Cox stated the game is a reboot of the franchise and is not a part of the original series canon.[17][18] The setting of Lords of Shadow is during "the end of days" in the year of 1047.[19] The Earth's alliance with the Heavens has been threatened by a malevolent force known as the Lords of Shadow. A dark spell has stopped the souls of the deceased from leaving,[20] while evil creatures inhabit the dying land and attack living people.[10]

The main character, Gabriel Belmont[11][21] (voiced by Robert Carlyle[17]), is a member of the Brotherhood of Light, an elite group of holy knights who protect and defend innocent people against the supernatural creatures. Gabriel's wife Marie (voiced by Natascha McElhone[17]) was brutally murdered by one of them, and her soul cannot leave as it is trapped in limbo.[20] Because she is now neither alive nor dead, she realizes what is at stake and guides Gabriel to his destiny to save the world as he investigates the dark spell. He travels the destroyed land, meeting other characters such as his mentor[13] Zobek (voiced by actor Sir Patrick Stewart,[10] who additionally narrates the game[17]). Two masks referred to as the God and Devil Masks, lie at the centre of the plot, with the God Mask having powers to resurrect the dead.[8] Gabriel intends to defeat the three factions of the Lords of Shadow in order to obtain the pieces of the God Mask, and bring back his deceased wife.[20][22]

Story

The character Gabriel travels to a forest looking for someone known as the Guardian of the Lake.[23][24] He meets with the guardian, Pan (voiced by Aleksander Mikic[25]), at the Lake of the Oblivion, where he tells him that there the living can communicate with the dead.[26] Gabriel says the Brotherhood of Light sent him because they dreamt that a message from his deceased wife, Marie, awaits him at the lake, which will hold a clue to the world's salvation.[27][28] With Pan's permission, Gabriel crosses the lake and communicates with Marie. She informs him that Spirits who founded the Brotherhood of Light are attempting to tell her that the power of the Lords of Shadow is the means to the world's salvation.[29] After Marie disappears, a man from the Brotherhood of Light called Zobek introduces himself to Gabriel as an old acquaintance of Pan, who felt that Zobek should lend him assistance.[30] Zobek states that a prophecy has been kept a secret by a select few, and that it tells of a pure-hearted warrior who will claim the Lords of Shadow's power to overcome evil.[31][32] He says that they must enter the lands of the Dark Lords in order to unite the Heavens with the world again, and that with this Gabriel can bring Marie back from the dead.[33] Gabriel decides to leave for the Land of Lycans and asks Zobek to go to the Land of the Vampires to prepare, and that afterward they should go onto the Land of Necromancers together.[34]

Gabriel journeys to the Land of the Lycans and meets Claudia (Emma Ferguson[25]), a mute girl who can telepathically communicate and read minds.[35] In exchange for catching evil souls, she is protected by a golem called the Black Knight.[36] Claudia reads Gabriel's mind and discovers why he has journeyed to the Land of the Lycans, and offers to help him.[37] They decide to rest and during the night, Gabriel stabs her and suddenly awakens from what was seemingly a dream. Pan materializes before Gabriel and cautions him not to let the darkness possess him, and that he must take the Black Knight's gauntlet for his own benefit.[38] Gabriel exclaims he will not harm his two companions, but to his shock, notices the dagger is protruding from Claudia's corpse.[39] The Black Knight discovers this and attacks Gabriel, who both engage in a fight before Gabriel kills him and procures the gauntlet. Gabriel buries Claudia and continues the journey, eventually encountering the Dark Lord of the Lycans, Cornell (Richard Ridings[25]). Cornell defies Gabriel and tells him that three founding members of the Order fought the spawns of Satan in God's favor, and in their commitment to the crusade they found three places where God's power was intense. They used this to transform into the Spirits with power only second to God's, but when they ascended to the Heavens they left behind their dark sides. Cornell reveals what they left to be the Lords of Shadow, which includes himself.[40] Gabriel defeats Cornell and receives a piece of the God Mask. Pan appears and tells him the other two pieces remain, and takes him to the Land of the Vampires.[41]

Gabriel rendezvous with Zobek in a village, and he enters the castle of the Vampire Dark Lord, Carmilla (Sally Knyvette[25]). A battle ensues between them and Gabriel kills her, gaining the second piece of the God Mask. Gabriel then departs for the Land of the Necromancers through a portal Pan made, who challenges Gabriel to a fight, much to his confusion. Pan suffers a mortal wound afterward, and tells Gabriel he challenged him in order to sacrifice himself to open a pathway to Gabriel's journey.[42] Gabriel encounters the Necromancer, who he defeats for the last part of the mask. Zobek then appears before Gabriel with the Devil Mask, who wears it over his face and discloses that he is, in fact, the Lord of the Necromancers, and the one who cast the spell that separated the Earth from the Heavens. He knew this would persuade the Order's founders in Heaven to contact the Brotherhood of Light. Zobek states he did this because he grew tired of the Lords of Shadow diverting the power amongst the three of them and not seeing the potential they had in combining it. Desiring this power, he searched Hell to acquire it, until an evil force entered him and expanded his knowledge of the dark arts. Zobek says according to the prophecy, all he needed was for Gabriel to restore the power of the Spirits, while using him to avoid suspicion from them.[43] Gabriel says he will not let him stand in his way, but Zobek mentions he used the Devil Mask on Gabriel to have him kill Claudia so he could take the Black Knight's gauntlet, which allowed Zobek to control Gabriel if he ever became a threat to him. Zobek also used the mask on Gabriel to kill his wife Marie, orchestrating the events of the story.[44] Satan (Jason Isaacs) emerges and takes the God Mask from Zobek, revealing himself to be one responsible for granting him power and knowledge in Hell, and that he masterminded everything from the start so he could have revenge on God and return to the Heavens.[45][46] Gabriel confronts Satan and defeats him, releasing the dark spell that trapped the souls of the deceased in limbo. Before passing onto the Heavens, Marie tells Gabriel he has been granted new life to redeem himself, and that she loves him.[47][48] Gabriel asks if the God Mask can bring her back, but finds out it only allows the wearer to see through God's eyes. Marie says it is too late for her, and kisses Gabriel before departing with the God Mask.[49] After the ending credits, Zobek is seen alive centuries later during modern times, and has uncovered Gabriel living out an immortal life as a vampire while hiding in a church. Zobek asks him why he has been hiding all this time, but he angrily retorts that he is no longer called Gabriel and that his name is now Dracula.[50] Zobek mentions the acolytes of Satan are preparing for his return and that they must stop him, before he takes revenge on both of them.[51] Before Gabriel disappears, Zobek tells him he will free him of his immortality if he helps him.[52]

Development

Longtime producer of the Metal Gear series, Hideo Kojima, had an advisory role in the game's development.

There were a number of prototypes in parallel development competing to continue development as the next Castlevania title. Konami told MercurySteam the game would be an original IP when it was first greenlit as a Castlevania title.[53] They eventually asked them to cease work on Lords of Shadow while it was still in its early stages, until Cox showed the Japanese senior management the game and was offered help by Hideo Kojima.[54] Konami then chose the pitch for it as the next Castlevania entry.[14][20] The original concept for the game was to remake the first Castlevania starring Simon Belmont, but it was later decided to make a reboot of the franchise.[55] Lords of Shadow still drew inspiration from earlier titles in the series, most notably Castlevania for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and Super Castlevania IV.[8]

Kojima's involvement in the development of the game allowed him to assist with things based on his creative viewpoint. Examples include advising Cox's team to redesign some of the lead character, Gabriel, who he felt needed a "more heroic face".[56] Originally, Gabriel's design resembled a classic barbarian,[53] before Kojima then advised the staff to refine him into a character that was more relatable for the player.[57] David Cox mentioned "you can see a little bit" of Robert Carlyle's visage in Gabriel, who provides the voice for the character.[58] Kojima also oversaw the Japanese localization of the game, employing a number of voice actors from the Japanese versions of Metal Gear Solid.[59] Cox stated that he has otherwise allowed them a lot of freedom with the project.[8] MercurySteam wanted to depart from the art style of the other games in favour of one that was darker. Cox further elaborated, saying "The old games had this boyish depiction of vampires and monsters and we wanted them to have a darker edge this time around."[22] The gaming press have drawn comparisons between the art style and Guillermo del Toro's work.[60]

The developers avoided the use of Quick Time Events during combat, stating it distracted the player from the action taking place within the game.[22] When the game was 60% complete, MercurySteam were aiming for 30 frames per second performance, as opposed to 60 frames, which they said was not a priority at that stage.[8] The game reached gold status following an announcement on Twitter made by David Cox on September 9, 2010.[61]

The game's musical score is being written by Spanish composer Óscar Araujo using a 120-piece orchestra, including an 80 person choir. It will also feature previous Castlevania musical themes.[11] A soundtrack CD will also be included in limited editions of the game, with 18-20 tracks in total.[62][63]

Lords of Shadow features voiced dialogue by a professional cast recorded in London;[64] an aspect which has been acclaimed by the gaming press. Of note is Robert Carlyle, and Sir Patrick Stewart as Gabriel's mentor Zobek.[10] The part of Gabriel was originally going to be offered to Gerard Butler, but he was not available.[65] The cast would make their own contributions to the characters during the recordings. "What could have been an ‘in and out’ voiceover job for them wasn’t. Instead, their love of the script and praise saw them developing their characters and working through the motivations for them."[66]

Critical reception

During its development, Lords of Shadow was placed on several lists for most anticipated video games. GameTrailers ranked it at number 7 for Top 10 Most Anticipated Games of 2010.[83] Explicit Gamer wrote "With so many great games in store for us in 2010, you should be sure not to overlook Castlevania: Lords of Shadow when it hits the shelves."[84] Games Radar placed Lords of Shadow at number 26 for 100 Most Anticipated Games of 2010, stating that "This could be a megaton release."[85] 1UP.com's top 50 most anticipated games of E3 2010 ranked Lords of Shadow at number 17.[86] Following the event, the game won the People's Choice Award.[87] Despite the heavy anticipation, Cox noted there was still a small number of fans who did not like the game's transition to the 3D format.[88] While he acknowledged this, he asserted "Fair enough, some people aren’t going to like what we’re doing and we accept that but generally what we’re trying to do is bring the fans with us ... there’s no point in going back and making the same game again – the point is to make a clean break and move forward with the series."[88][89]

The reception for the game is critical acclaim.[68] GamesMaster described the game as "a strong contender for action game of the year. The triumphant reimagining the series has always deserved." Xbox World 360 stated, "Water Castlevania's roots and a rollicking adventure sprouts forth ... Lords Of Shadow feels like 16-bit design filtered through 20 years of innovation. There is passion here for the old ways - all buffed to a 2010 gleam."[82] Official Xbox Magazine lauded the size of the game's content, writing "... [it] is big. Actually, big's too little a word. It's monolithic... From the Resi 4 mood of the scarecrow puzzle to the unexpected oddity of the music box level, this is a game that seemingly hasn't heard of DLC - and decides to offer you immense value for money instead." The publication concluded it was "an epic and slightly unexpected triumph".[67] Despite its reception, Lords of Shadow was not without criticism. Some reviews noted that the game borrowed many of its mechanics from other games. GameSpot's review calls the game "a good start for a series in need of some new blood--so to speak--it's just unfortunate so much of it comes from other games and not an original source."[77] 1UP's review states, "altogether, the game spins an interesting tale, and though it might borrow some ideas a little heavily from certain other games, it implements them well."[80]

It was I who cast the spell that separated the Earth from the Heavens... I knew this would force my brothers and sister in heaven to contact the order here on Earth... The prophecy was their little ray of hope in the darkness! We Lords of Shadow, as you call us, have been impotent for far too long, fixed in an uneasy truce for many centuries; each possessing our share of the power, but each unable to have mastery over the others. Until now. I grew tired of these years of proliferation. A constant truce between the three of us. Each unwilling to concede or co-operate with the others. They were too blind to see the potential in the power we held... if only it were combined... I desired that ultimate power and was prepared to probe the very depths of Hell in search of knowledge to acquire it. I fought hordes of demons and became strong. Then, a force so vast and terrible entered into me, expanding my knowledge of the dark arts until it reached unimagined heights. All I needed was someone to restore the luminous power of the Spirits, according to the prophecy, and you have been the perfect dupe. ... Of course, I couldn't arouse their suspicions that it was I who desired the power for my own... No... I used the prophecy as my cover... and you... my shining knight! {{cite book}}: Check date values in: |date= (help)

Killing and butchering your way to victory! There is a terrible darkness in you, my friend... Your burning desire to resurrect your darling Marie has blinded you to it! As you slept, I was able to... influence you with this mask but even I did not foresee the beast that lay within. It was all too easy to make you kill them. Your penchant for death and murder were insatiable. You just needed a little nudge and off you would go in search of the one thing that could bring her back. Yes Gabriel, now you finally understand. It was you who murdered your wife. {{cite book}}: Check date values in: |date= (help)
