Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by RHB (talk | contribs) at 16:16, 3 January 2011 (Errors in Did you know?: DYK frank baldino jr.). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 01:46 on 17 October 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in today's or tomorrow's On this day

The observance chosen for today is Gregory of Nazianzus, but since it falls on a Sunday this year, it's not actually observed. Today is the Second Sunday of Christmas, or, for many churches, the Epiphany, which can be celebrated on the Sunday after 1 January rather than on 6 January. Most churches with calendars of saints have rules about which ones can be celebrated on Sundays, and very few are considered sufficiently important. Gregory of Nazianzus certainly isn't one of them for Roman Catholics. DTOx (talk) 15:01, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why are we even mentioning these sort of feast days anyway? Are *any* of them really that important? Modest Genius talk 16:29, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Earth's perihelion

In the News it is noted as 0000 UTC. On http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apsis#Earth.27s_perihelion_and_aphelion it says 1900 UT. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 00:15, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

USNO says Jan 3 0000 UT [1], seems the article is in error. Modest Genius talk 00:40, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm an idiot, was looking at the 2010 line, not 2011. 1900 UT is indeed correct, OTD (not ITN) presumably has the value left over from last year. Modest Genius talk 00:43, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Updated ... I didn't even notice the year on that when I swapping out entries a few days ago. howcheng {chat} 00:57, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reporters: please first correct today's or tomorrow's regular version.

It's done it again, todays featured picture has no source or licensing info. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 09:16, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can anyone explain the mechanism of image protection? To me it seems like the image is on commons and is protected there, and that MPUploadBot has uploaded empty space and protected that (nearly) empty space on en.wiki, and this "empty space" has covered up the Commons description. Errors in Did you know?

On the DYK: "... that Frank Baldino, Jr. is founder and CEO of a company seeking to market its narcolepsy medication to treat jet lag?", the article notes that he died on December 16th last year, so should probably "...was founder..."
